This is still a working farm. Itscontinual and continued use asa key component ofa working farm isa significantpart of itsheritagevalue.
Most of the stone buildings nowvisible originate in the 1600sand have been used foragriculture for the last 500 years.

Great Tre-Rhew has been the siteof a farm and a mill since the
1100s, probablyproviding flour
and othersupplies for
the WhiteCastle foraround300years.

Great Tre-Rhew Mill is the site ofa water mill close to the WhiteCastle providing vital supplies offlour to the garrison. It datesback at least to the 14th centuryand was operated by a system ofwater channels and a mill pondto provide power to grind corn.
Adeiladwyd Castell Gwyn addechreuodd fel mwnt a beilisyml, i amddiffyn y rhan yma o’rGororau. Byddai marchogiongyda’u gwyr arfog, ceffylau agweision yn cylchwylio cefngwlad o’r safle yma.
Atgyfnerthwyd y gwrthglawddgyntaf o gwmpas 1185 a’Iymestyn yn 1250au a’r 1260aupan gyfnerthwyd pwer y Cymryo dan y tywysog Llywelyn apGruffydd, ond yn sgil eiorchfygiad fe wnaeth concwestdilynol Edward 1 dros Gymru,ddiddymu’r bygythiad, fellydarfod a wnaethswyddogaeth CastellGwyn. Daw ei enwo’r plastrgwyngalch afu’ngorchuddio’Iwaliaugwreiddiol.
White Castle was built to defendthis part of the Welsh Marchesand started as a simple motteand bailey. Knights with theirmen at arms, horses andgrooms, would patrol thecountryside from this base. Theearly earthwork defences werestrengthened around 1185 andenlarged in the 1250s and1260s when Welsh power wasbeing consolidated under princeLlywelyn ap Gruffydd, but hisdefeat and the subsequentconquest of Wales by Edward Iremoved the threat and White
Castle’s role faded. Itsname comes from
the white limeplaster that
originallycoveredthewalls.
