Dear Residents of Greater First Colony, When I took over the role as President, I thought the toughest decision we would have to make is how many park benches to replace. Unfortunately, it hasn’t been quite that simple. We are faced with a challenge we haven’t had to face before, the spread of COVID-19 and its impact on our health and everyday life. During this emergency period we have pulled together as a neigh-borhood. Volunteers continue to step up, it’s just what we do in Greater First Colony. We now have a team of volunteers willing to help those who are uncomfortable going out to get necessary items, and we are looking at starting what we might call a Neighborhood Watch “Lite” to ensure that we reach out to everyone. We strongly encourage everyone to follow the guidance our government and medical leadership has provided to keep us all safe. For example, after James City County requested that all private playgrounds be closed, we closed our playground. Welcoming. Pat visited 2 new families and has left three messages. Did make contact with another family. Tennis courts (Roger Hunt) – Roger reported that the court has been pressure washed. He’s looking for filler for the cracks and considering tearing down the back-board. Clubhouse. The clubhouse remains closed through the end of April. Park. Eric stated that although the playground is closed the park remains open. He has a list of maintenance items that will be worked once restrictions are lifted.

Old Business: Directory. The directory is close to being finished. Upcoming Events - Easter Egg Hunt – Kathy reported that she has be-tween 1000-1100 filled eggs. A signup genius will be prepared inviting families to join and eggs will be safely delivered by a group of volunteers. Memorial Day Picnic – Cancelled. July 4 - we’ll wait and see.

New Business: Virtual First Colony Cookbook. An idea was pro-posed to create an online cookbook featuring members favorite survival meal and something fun to do at home. This will be pursued by Jan Walker. This will be online and free. COVID 19 Challenges. Brett Major - provided a sum-mary of the Governor’s order 55 - stay at home rules. Terry has received at least 5 complaints of groups of more than 10 congregating at the beach. Does the GFCACA board want to do anything? After much dis-cussion it was determined that communication with the members and visitors will be increased via signs at the beach, email and facebook notices. Members will be encouraged to visit amenities during non-peak times. Our hope is to be able to keep the beach, sunset deck, and fishing pier open. Financial impact of COVID-19 restrictions - Terry will work with Brian O’Day and Meagan on a plan going forward given the reduced income from clubhouse, pool, marina rentals. Our routine monthly bills are man-ageable right now. There being no further business, the board meeting was adjourned at 8:04 pm. Respectfully Submitted, Denise Thomas, Secretary

COVID-19 Message

The following is a message approved by Dr. Susan Lessner Boesler, Emergency physician and Medical Director of the Sentara Williamsburg Emergency Department.

Separate areas are set up at the Sentara Emergency Room for infectious versus noninfectious complaints in order to protect our patients.

The ER is closed to visitors to prevent spread of disease

Many COVID-19 patients have had no known contact with other ill persons.

COVID-19 is wide-spread in the greater community.

Sending out a notification about an infected person in a neighborhood should be avoided as it is not help-ful. Good intentions aside, we find that some of these patients are being criticized for having the virus as if it were their fault. Also, it sends a false sense of security for those that don’t think that they have been exposed since they may not have come in contact with this person.

You are probably more likely to come in contact with the virus if you are out in public which is why it is important to socially distance but not socially isolate especially one of our own. Only those that are symptomatic are currently being tested. The test however has both false positives and nega-tives limiting the reliability.

Since the testing is not widely available, we don’t know the actual number of infected people.

This is a new virus so we are learning new things daily and information is constantly coming in.

We don’t know how long people are contagious but is thought probably around 12-14 days. Most people will have only mild symptoms but the older you are and the more medical problems you have, the more likely that you will have severe problems if you get this virus.

Sentara has set up a COVID-19 Call in Center that can answer more questions about signs and symptoms. They are currently open 9am-7pm, 7 days a week. 1-833-945-2395 Remember we are ALL IN THIS TOGETHER. This is the time we take care of each other. If you are going to the store, maybe call your neighbor and see if they need anything to limit the number of exposures.

Now that the weather is getting warmer, get outside and enjoy the blooming flowers and trees with fresh air.

The number one thing is to take care of yourself and stay safe by limiting exposure to others.

To all residents of Greater First Colony,

As we go through this emergency period, we have the opportunity to pull together as a neighborhood. The Associa-tion board is establishing a list of people that are willing to make store runs for those residents that aren’t comfortable with or able to go out. If you are not able to get out to the store on your own, and would like someone to pick up ne-cessities or medicine for you now or in the coming weeks, please contact one of the numbers below:

Terry Walker [email protected] 703.966.5700

Brian Day [email protected] 757.707.6395

Brian O’Day [email protected] 717.439.4399

Ruth Larson [email protected] 757.871.3671

If you’d like to be added to the list of helpers, please email or call/text Terry Walker, President GFCACA

TENNIS COURTS

The courts have been professionally

power washed and ready for play. The

next goal is to patch the cracks and repaint. We hope

to mark out a pickle ball court for this summer’s

play. Lastly, looking for volunteers and material do-

nations to remove and replace the failing practice

backboard.

Thank you.
