The af-fluent, African-American LeVay family is gathering at their Martha’s Vineyard home for the weekend, and brothers Kent and Flip have each brought their respective ladies home to meet the parents for the first time. Kent’s fiancée Taylor, an academic whose absent father was a prominent author, struggles to fit into the LeVay’s upper-crust life-style. Kimber, on the other hand, is a self-described WASP who works with inner-city school children, fits in more easily with the family. Joining these two couples are the demanding LeVay patriarch Joe and Cheryl, the daughter of the family’s long-time housekeeper. As the two newcomers butt heads over issues of race and privilege, longstand-

In this play set just before Obama’s election, the volatile dynamics of talking about race intertwine with the romantic interactions among four racially diverse Harvard in-tellectuals. Nashville Ballet’s ac-claimed annual series, Attitude, brings the best of Nashville’s thriving arts community together to highlight some of the most unique and inspiration-al collaborations in Music City, including thought-provoking works from contemporary choreogra-phers and live music from local musicians. Pushing the boundaries of the series, Light: The Holocaust and Humanity Project offers a groundbreaking exploration of devastating loss, resiliency and, ul-timately, the triumph of the human spirit. Following Holocaust survivor Naomi Warren’s story as told through music and dance, Light offers a unique op-portunity that only art can – to feel, better under-stand and reflect upon a piece of history that defies comprehension. The ballet illuminates the past to promote compassion, understanding and hope to issues relevant in today’s society. FEBRUARY 8-10, 15-17The Threepenny OperaStreet Theatre Company, 6727 Charlotte Pike. Set in Victorian London, the bitter tale is told of the pred-atory outlaw known as Mack the Knife. He secretly marries the daughter of Soho’s underworld boss, but is soon betrayed by his sinister in-laws and sent to prison. After being freed by the police chief’s daughter, he is again betrayed and sentenced to death. At the final hour he manages a reprieve from Queen Victoria herself, thus providing a menacing finale of ferocious irony. A milestone of 20th cen-tury musical theater, The Threepenny Opera (Die Dreigroschenoper) transformed old-fashioned opera and operetta forms, incorporating a sharp political perspective and the sound of 1920s Berlin dance bands and cabaret. Composer Kurt Weill’s acid harmonies and playwright Bertolt Brecht’s bit-ing texts created a revolutionary new musical the-ater that inspired such subsequent hits as Cabaret, Chicago, and Urinetown. The materials exhibited here capture the drama of a time when thousands of African-American citizens in Nashville sparked a nonviolent challenge to racial segrega-tion in the city and across the South. Visitors can sit at the symbolic lunch counter and read the Ten Rules of Conduct carried by the protesters during the sit-ins and examine the timeline of local and national events.
