Fishing Derby for Youth With Special Needs

On June 27, 2015, the Greece Kiwanis Club, with support from the Town of Greece Community Center, The Greece Police Athletic League, and Scout Troop 197 held a Fishing Derby for youth with special needs. The event was held at 2100 Latta Road, Greece, utilizing a beautiful park-like setting that included four ponds stocked with fish. Every youth, with the help of a fishing guide, caught fish, enjoyed a variety of refreshments, and a pizza picnic lunch.

Local Audiologist turns Race Car Driver .... All for a Cause

It’s all or nothing when Dr. Stephen Hart, Au.D. takes on a challenge. When he started biking, he commit-ted to a 100 mile charity ride. Next, he started running with a group from the Metro Center YMCA and soon completed a mara-thon, again for a charity.

In September, Dr. Hart will embark on a 1500km trek around the island of Newfoundland when he competes in the World Class Targa Newfoundland, Sep-tember 13 – 18, 2015, with his lifelong friend, Tom Megan. The two will race in Megan’s 1963 Porsche 356SC.

But it’s not all about the race. Dr. Stephen Hart will be racing to raise money for Bethany House, a shelter for homeless women and children in Rochester, N.Y.

All of their funding is through donations. “Donors like Steve and Meg Hart are the heart and soul of Bethany House. Bethany House also operates a clothing room, a drop-in center and an emergency food cupboard.

Painting the TownThe Grease Paint Alley Clowns brought International

Clown Week to the Greece Town Hall on August 3, 2015. This year the event featured the painting of a wall inside the craft room.

For years the clowns have painted the sidewalk by the playground. With the installation of the “Wild Over Wa-ter Zone” all sidewalks needed to be sealed for safety and are no longer available for painting. The painting event was moved inside the Community Center, and each year the clowns will now paint a wall within the craft room.

The public was invited to attend the event.

The Grease Paint Alley Clowns are a not for profit all vol-unteer organization serving the Rochester area and sur-rounding communities. They let their light shine making people smile by wearing red noses, twisting balloons and doing face painting at public events, “fun”draisers, parades and through hospital clowning at Golisano Children’s Hos-pital. The participating members come from all areas of the Rochester community with interests in clowning rang-ing from amateur to hobbyist to professional.

And my favorite thing to get from Zarpentine’s has al-ways been pure maple sugar candy and even pure maple syrup and sometimes maple cream as well. We know some folks that own this maple farm that make that kind of stuff so getting maple sugar candy and pure maple syrup from any kind of farm market including Zarpentine’s always definitely makes me think of them every time. I’ve always had great reason to believe that Zarpentine’s is always one of the very very good places to get apple cider, apple fritters, certain types of baked goods, and even maple sugar candy and pure maple syrup as well all during the fall months.

Their Cinnamon Cider donuts, apple cider and frosted brown-ies are excellent. They’re open all year. They have seasonal fruits and vegetables, pies and bakery items. They have a really intricate corn maze in October that’s extremely hard to find the exit.

2015 Dewey Avenue Family FestivalThis year’s Dewey Avenue Festival was held on July 28,

2015. The Festival is held each year with the support of Community Organizations, Businesses and Individuals with the intent of enhancing the quality of life for the residents in one of the older Greece neighborhoods. The goal of the Festival is to provide a fun, social and upbeat event for the families in the Dewey Avenue/Stone Road corridor.

National Night Out in GreeceGreece Town Supervisor Bill Reilich hosted the Annual Na-

tional Night Out event at the Greece Town Campus on August 4, 2015 from 5PM - 7PM.

National Night Out is a community event aimed at strength-ening the relationship between residents and law enforcement officials.

The rainy evening did not stop the large crowd that attended the event. There were community organizations, vendors, food trucks, local police and emergency personnel and door prizes awarded.

“Having an open dialogue between residents and law enforce-ment officials is essential,” said Supervisor Reilich in a state-ment. “This event will help lead to an increased awareness to the different methods folks can utilize to ensure our community is kept safe.”


A rainy evening did not stop a large crowd from attending the event.

Town of Greece Secures Grant for Historic Marker at Odenbach Plant

Supervisor Reilich announced that the Town of Greece has been awarded a grant to fund a historic marker at the Odenbach Plant on Dewey Avenue. The Odenbach Ship-building Corporation, which was owned by John H. Oden-bach, originally broke ground on this site in 1942. The former farmland property overlooking Round Pond was responsible for manufacturing ocean-going ships for the United States Army during World War II. Over fifty coastal tankers were produced along with derrick barges until the end of the war in 1945. The tankers ranged from 180 to 195 ft. in length. Odenbach used a manmade channel to launch the vessels into Round Pond and then into Lake Ontario. At its peak, the plant employed over 1500 people and includ-ed an electrical shop, a plumbing shop, a machine shop, and a paint shop. “I am thrilled to announce that the Town of Greece has been awarded this grant from the William G. Pomeroy Foundation to install a historic marker at the site of the Odenbach Plant” said Supervisor Reilich in a state-ment. “This site is an important example of a crucial time in our nation’s history and it deserves to be recognized for its significance.”

What are they saying about us...I got a ground round with everything and extra meat sauce. I was in hamburger heaven. A ground round is basically just a burger, and the meat sauce is what makes Rochester cuisine famous (lol). It’s also one of the juiciest burgers I’ve ever had... not just the extra meat sauce I asked for, but the amazing dripping gushing patty as well. Absolutely fantastic. And the hard roll it comes on (the same kind that all the best places in Rochester use) is won-derful. The meat sauce is good... the burger is huge, it’s cheap, it’s filling. I was working on a Saturday and finished early (9:15am). Feeling hungry I saw this place. The words “Charbroil”, “breakfast” and “open” triggered my impulse to stop.

First, this isn’t a fancy place, you go up to the counter and place your order and take a seat. I got the double play, two eggs (over), pan-cakes and bacon. Whole wheat toast and coffee. Just over 5 bucks, nice!

The pancakes were light and sweet....very cake like. Eggs of course are eggs. Mine cooked over medium and were good. The toast was a hearty whole wheat, very good. The bacon was was perfectly crispy.

My experience was good. I am glad that I stopped here. I’m sure this place is a local favorite and can only imagine that the burgers and hots are very popular. I would like to add that the owner is very friendly and sincere as I overheard him converse with some of the patrons.

CrossFit exercise has been sweeping then nation for sometime. What was once considered an exercise pro-gram for only the elite now seems to have become some-thing that has become so mainstream that almost anyone can participate in this full body workout.

As a Personal Trainer I wanted to learn more about this exercise rage! So I met with a local CrossFit expert Dan Dirkx and picked his brain. Dan has over 9 years of Cross-Fit experience and is a certified CrossFit Trainer/Owner of CrossFit Fruition in Greece.

Cross Fit Inc. is a fitness company founded by Greg Glass-man in 2000. The company promoted CrossFit training as a physical exercise philosophy as well as a competitive fit-ness sport. The workouts include many compound move-ments from high intensity interval training, Olympic style lifting, plyometrics, power lifting and calisthenics. In 2005 there were 13 CrossFit facilities and now in 2015 there are more than 10,000 CrossFit facilities nationwide.

Dan explained to me that CrossFit training is built on 9 essential movements that are scalable to anyone. He said, “The program works with almost any ability from novice to athlete ages 7-70.” Dan feels the biggest CrossFit myth is that you need to be in “CrossFit shape” before you can be-gin. According to Dan this is not true. The CrossFit program is actually designed for universal scalability making it the perfect application for any committed individual regardless of experience. “CrossFit is tailored to the persons ability level. It helps a person feel better, look better and perform better,” according to Dirkx.

We have been to Golden Ponds for several wed-dings and saw their ad in the GreeceNewsNY regarding the restaurant - forgot that they had a regular restaurant. We also decided to try brunch...it was very good. The staff was great, made to order omelettes and a huge buffet for a very reasonable price. We also took the grand kids to the pizza and pasta buffet on Wednes-day night - what could be better for kids, at least 7 different pizza choices and made to or-der pasta... plus a large variety of salads - all fresh. Trying the Italian Buffet next.Great Experience!

Pretty good pizza. It’s hard to find delivery out here, but they deliver. I’ve never wait-ed more than 45 minutes for my delivery and I really love their seafood pizza! They are really great and affordable. They don’t make you spend a ridiculous amount of money for delivery either - mini-mum $10.

I have never had a fish fry that was this delicious! I got the beer battered and my friend got the Cajun. We shared and both were just delicious. The owner Lisa personally came over to our table and introduced herself. After our meal we went to the bar and met the owners husband Wayne. What a nice couple. I was talking to a local guy who was telling me how selfless the owners are. He said they help the needy, and even raised a bunch of money for a single Mother of 6 this past Christmas. I was so impressed I went back on Monday for a beer and was surprisingly surprised at their wing special. I’m from California and we just can’t seem to get wings right. This place had a special going on. I had a beer and a bunch of wings for under $10. I highly recommend you check this place out. Hands down the best fish fry and wings I’ve ever had! I have been going to Overtime on and off since 2001. I have seen the place trans-form from what used to be the old Spur of the Moment into a friendly neighhood bar to get a cold one after work. I have seen major improvements in the decor from the bar to the dining room. They always have fun events and the staff is the most friendly that i have seen. Lately though, I have seen an amazing transformation from a neighborhood bar to a great place to have dinner. The food is amazing from wings to steaks. (My favorite is the Pot Roast Melt...Amazing) Lisa and Wayne and the entire staff really care about you having a good time while you are there. I highly recom-mend giving them a try. – J.K.

Giuseppe’s is a fine little Italian restaurant and pizzeria tucked away in the back corner of the plaza on Spencerport Rd. There is a dining room to the left of the main store area, so you can come in and sit down for lunch and dinner. They’re a family establishment, and one of the oldest pizzerias in Rochester. Bread and pastries are sold here.

I’ve ordered pizza and wings here a couple times, and been satisfied with the food. The pepperoni and sausage pie I got was tasty. I’ve also ordered their ziti with meatball pasta dinner, and it was nice with plenty of meatball goodness, and it came with complimentary bread and butter.

The real strength of Giuseppe’s is their pizza prices, which happen to be some of the lowest around. 11 bucks for a 16” pie is very good, as is $5.50 for a small. Plus, they frequently include coupons in the local paper, making their low cost even lower.

You can’t go wrong with anything you pick. If you are not in the mood for pasta, then definitely get the steak sub! The steak that Giuseppe’s uses is great and the bread is out of this world!

They also have a pizza, wing and salad buffet that is dirty cheap offered during lunch hours! They have all their bases covered when it comes to great food! This is somewhere I definitely recommend to go to get some solid Italian food.

Its been a number of weeks since I first reviewed the Forest Hill Restaurant. Since that time I have had the pleasure of returning on a number of occasions and it has become one of my favorite “places to go”. Although they are only open four nights a week (Wed, Thur, Fri and Sat) due to their successful catering business, I find myself eating there at least once a week (and more often on some weeks).On Wednesday nights they offer 12 menu items for $13 each, including soup, salad, entree, and dessert. Fresh baked Italian bread and herbed crackers accompany all meals. I have tried the Chicken French (excellent), the Fried Clams (OK, but nothing out of the ordinary), the Chicken Parme-san (excellent), the Meat Loaf (excellent), and the Chicken Marsala (outstanding!) from this special menu. I would have been happy with any of the selections.On Friday, they offer what I consider to be one of the best fish fries in the Rochester area. The generous portion of breaded haddock is primarily fish as compared to primarily

breading or batter provided by many local restaurants. Its not the cheapest fish fry I’ve had in the area, but definitely one of the tastiest and satisfying. If you want to enjoy this option, go early as the place gets crowded quickly and their dining room only seats about 32-34 guests.This past Saturday, I decided to go for their advertised Stuffed Pork Chops special (a new special is offered every Saturday). Unfortunately, by the time I finished my cock-tail at the bar, they had sold out! From other patrons, I can understand why as no one had a single complaint, rating the meal as “outstanding”. Despite my initial disappointment, I noticed that they had an unadvertised special of Tenderloin Tails with Broiled Scallops listed on the whiteboard. Ten-derloin tails are the thinner part of the beef tenderloin that remains after the the thicker cuts have been portioned off as filet mignon. What a surprise this turned out to be! The tenderloin was fork-tender with a great beefy flavor (mine were medium rare to medium); the scallops were superb! For $16, this was one of the finest meals I have yet enjoyed at this establishment. My compliments to Chef Mike and his staff.Forest Hill is a bit off the beaten track...but its well worth finding!!!
