Greece Town Supervisor Bill Reilich was joined by Greece Town Board Members David Michael Barry Jr., Brett Gran-ville, Andrew Conlon, and Diana Christodaro for the Annual Town of Greece Arbor Day Memorial Tree Planting event held at the Greece Town Hall at 11:00 AM on Thursday, April 28, 2016.

This year’s tree was planted in memory of Greece em-ployee, Mr. Paul J. Czapranski.

“Paul was an integral part in the Greece Town Hall Family. His unwavering dedication to his work was something that was and will continue to be admired by all who had the privilege of working with him. I can speak for many who knew Paul that he will be greatly missed, ” stated Supervi-sor Reilich.

The tree chosen by Paul’s family, a White Oak Tree, which was a personal favorite of Paul’s, will continue to grow next the Greece Town Hall and ensure that Paul’s memory lives on. Provided Information and Photos

HONEYMOON LICENSE‘Our Honeymoon’ – Lainey pulled the leather embossed

album down off the shelf and began flipping the pages. The photos never failed to bring a smile to her face.

There was ‘The Celebration’ at port, an impressive twelve stories tall, glistening in the sun, so white against the blue ocean. “Welcome Aboard!”

There was Lainey diving into the pool. Then there was Lainey bolting out of the water, rubbing her tearing, squinty eyes, with her tongue out, spitting and sputtering. Oh no! Salt water!

There was Joe, golden, lying in the creamy sand at the water’s edge. And Joe with the blue swimming goggles and snorkeling gear, holding a fishy morsel out to a sting ray. And Joe, with his foot in the stirrup trying to hoist himself up onto his waiting steed.

There they were all dressed up for the Captain’s Din-ner, Lainey looking gorgeous in the emerald green gown with the bows at the shoulder and Joe so debonair in his pinstripe suit. And there they were, comically oversized gloves on their hands, duking it out in the boxing ring.

There was the frog and the swan, the giraffe and the pig. Towel origami! A different animal left on their bed each night.

That was ‘The Honeymoon’. Next up was ‘Honeymoon #1’ with a picture of them eating the top tier of their wedding cake that had been in the freezer for a year. It had, surprisingly, still tasted good! ‘Honeymoon #5’ had

a picture of Joe and Lainey at their favorite restaurant, Emeralds, with little baby Dixie sleeping in her infant seat next to them. For ‘Hon-eymoon #14’ Lainey was in the kitchen preparing a special anniversary dinner, her pregnant belly jet plane sized, just before the twins were born.

With pictures for each anniversary, the album was much more than ‘Our Hon-eymoon’. It was a yearly chronicle of their lives to-gether and the progression of their family. She had new pictures ready to enter into the album now, ‘Honeymoon #25’, their silver anniversary!

Lainey couldn’t fathom how twenty-five years could have gone by so quickly. She could remember like it was yester-day the first time she had ever laid eyes on Joe Andrews. He was walking through her friend Babs’ kitchen, deep in conversation with Babs’ brother, Craig.

My god he was handsome with his curly dark hair and brown eyes, his long eye lashes and his leather jacket. A thrill squeezed her stomach. Fizzy tingles zipped like elec-tricity through her veins.

“Who was that?” She had asked, nonchalant, as if the continued on page 12

question was nothing more than casual small talk. But she wasn’t fooling Babs! Babs had seen her face light

up, had heard the wild thumping of her heart. “You like him don’t you! Is it love at first sight?” Babs had teased her, mercilessly. But Cupid’s arrow re-

ally had struck! It was love at first sight! Fifteen months later, Lainey was skipping from the church with Joe at her side, smiling and laughing, as the confetti rained down around them.

Well, they do say that time flies when you’re having fun. And they certainly had plenty of fun times alright; days both simple and grand, to be remembered and cherished always. Not to say there were never any bad times. Times when they argued and bickered and the divorce word had popped into their heads and echoed around in their brains.

But echoes are only hollow imitations that peter out and disappear. Love is durable. It inks its’ way into everything and colors it warm. It shoves out the bad times like an unwelcome guest that no one has an affinity for and never wants to see again.

Lainey picked up the pictures she was about to enter into the Honeymoon album and chuckled. They’d had such a good time last weekend. Gabe and Owen had been at a sleepover hosted by their karate teacher and Dixie was in her own apartment now, so the whole house had been theirs. And they had done whatever they wanted, wher-

ever they wanted! There was Joe (her better half) pouring champagne into

the delicate green antique flutes that her parents had giv-en them as a wedding gift. There was Lainey, eating a slice of fresh pear topped with earthy brie. And Lainey, dancing in the dappled sunlight under the maple tree.

There was Joe (the father of her children) popping the cork on the second bottle of champagne, a sly glint in his eye. There was Lainey, an ‘Oh my god! I forgot!’ expres-sion on her face. And there was the garlic bread, very crisp and very black.

There was Joe (her anchor to the world) smoke billowing around him as he turned the steaks over on the grill.

And there was Joe (the love of her life) lips pursed, blow-ing her a kiss.

Keeping kids happy and healthy on summer breakby Tami Mungenast Personal Trainer and Nutrition Coach

Summer vacation for kids can be fun and full of activities. Young people can spend more time outdoors and doing more activities that require physical activity. Often though if not careful, kids can end up spending their days inside munching on junk food, being very inactive using video games, mobile devices and television. It is important that parents encourage and role model physical activities and good nutrition, especially during the summer when their days are less structured. Eating and living in a healthy ac-tive lifestyle will help the kids enjoy their summer while staying on track with their physical, emotional and social development. Studies have shown that kids who stay en-gaged with good nutrition and activity over summer break tend to be more successful in school when they return in the fall.

Here are some tips to help you incorporate healthy living into their summer break:

•Look for summer programs in your community that promote physical activity and learning. Most towns offer day camps and youth service businesses offer summer day camp programs. Ask the teacher or school for sugges-tions.

•Be active with your family. Take bike rides, walk to the local library, hike, beach trips, basketball or tennis at the local park. Whatever activity fits your family best provides great exercise and quality time together.

•Take advantage of local pools, beaches playgrounds and spray parks. In many cases these are free or at a low cost.

•Encourage regular meal times and healthy snacking. Often in the summer with the lack of school day structure meals and drinks become inconsistent. Summer is a great time to get your kids to try new local seasonal fruits and veggies from the local farm market. Have them get involved in picking what they want to try and let them come up with recipes or help you prepare them. Make sure your frig and pantry offer more healthy snacks than unhealthy options. Freeze some grapes or berries or place a popsicle stick in the middle of a yogurt cup to make a frozen treat. Cheese and nuts are also great snack options. Make popcorn with cinnamon instead of butter.

•Encourage kids to hydrate. Staying hydrated is impor-tant especially with physical activity in the heat. Nothing hydrates as well as water. Look for free apps (like Plant Nanny) that are fun for kids to use and helps them track their water intake.

•Turn off the TV, phones and computers. Limit screen time each day. This will help kids get moving and stay ac-tive. According the a study by the YMCA, 50 percent of families said that technological distractions (cell phones and TV) are their largest barrier to getting kids to engage in physical activity and healthy behaviors. Check out some helpful apps that help monitor their mobile and computer device usage (Our Pact).

•Make reading a priority. Ask for a reading list appropri-ate for your child’s ability from their teacher or librarian. Join a local reading program at your library or set-aside specific times to read. Even reading at the pool or beach can be a great way to keep their reading skills active.

Happy Summer!

From the office of The Supervisor, Bill Reilich

With warmer days here again, here at Town Hall we are pre-paring for a very busy summer filled with re-turning events and new ones as well. We are ex-cited to bring back com-munity favorites, Super-visor Reilich’s Summer Concerts at the Hall, the Old Fashioned Fourth of July Celebration, and many more. After a successful first season the Town’s Pickleball Courts are now in full swing and are getting plenty of usage with leagues and exhibition games. Last year over 20 teams participated in the Town’s Pickleball leagues, tournament and challenges. If you are interested in joining a league or finding out more about Pickleball please call the Community Center at 723-2425 for more information.

The Town of Greece, in conjunction with the Town of Greece Youth Board, hosted the second annual Jerry J. Helfer Memorial Scholarship Food Truck Rodeo on May 4th Local favorites Macarollin, Sweet Sammie Janes, The

Meatball Truck, Papa Gigs, and many more were on hand to serve up dinner and dessert. The Food Truck Rodeo drew in people from throughout the Greece and Monroe County community.

The proceeds that were raised from the event went to-wards the Jerry J. Helfer Youth Engagement Award Scholar-ship. Last year, the Town announced that this scholarship would be awarded to a student within the Greece com-munity that regularly upholds exemplary moral values, de-votes time and energy into helping serve the Greece com-munity, and consistently displays outstanding leadership skills.

We are also in full swing in preparation for our Town’s Old Fashioned Fourth of July celebration. This year we will be bringing back the Freedom Run 5k, where residents from the Town and the surrounding areas have the ability to sign up and participate in the race. Our newly mapped USATF Certified course will provide both the beginner and veteran runner a unique and exciting challenge on race day. If you are interested in participating please visit www.runsignup.com/Race/NY/Rochester/Greece5KFreedomRunfor more information. Our musical performance this will be the 80’s hit band Ambrosia. As always food and beverages will be available and a brilliant fireworks display will wrap up the day’s festivities.

As always, should you ever have a Town related issue, please feel free to contact my office at 225-2000 or visit our website at greeceny.gov.

Annual Erie Canal Clean SweepThe Town of Greece participated in the 11th Annual Erie

Canal Clean Sweep held on Saturday, April 23, 2016 at the town’s Historic Junction Lock Trail off of Ridgeway Avenue. This event was part of the statewide canal clean up coordi-nated by the New York State Canal Corporation and Parks & Trails New York in recognition of Earth Day.

Volunteers focused on cleaning up the eastern portion of the historic canal lock structures, removing nearly 500 pounds of trash and debris. Organizers noted that the west-ern portion of the lock, which was the focus of last year’s clean-up, remained relatively free of litter; a sign that the town’s efforts are making a difference.

“Keeping our community clean should be one of our top priorities” said Greece Town Supervisor Bill Reilich. “Our town’s annual Erie Canal Clean Sweep does an effective job in helping to pick up any garbage that has been accumulat-ing over the winter months. I want to thank all the volun-teers who took the opportunity to participate on April 23rd and take pride in our Town and keeping our parks and trails free from litter.”

The town organizes the annual Erie Canal Clean Sweep and other programs as a way of encouraging the commu-nity to take pride in Greece’s extensive network of parks and trails.

Greece Student Receives First Place Honors at RPO Young Artists Competition

For over 50 years, the Rochester Philharmonic League has annually sponsored the Young Artist Auditions. These auditions grant talented high school musicians the chance to perform for professional judges, and to win a variety of awards and scholarships. The Rochester Philharmonic League supports the education and outreach programs of the Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra.

The Rochester Philharmonic League competition is de-signed to identify the highest level of young artists in the nine county Rochester Area. Soprano Tessa Spencer, a Ju-nior at Greece Central School District’s Odyssey Academy, won first place honors in the 2016 RPO League’s Young Art-ist Competition. Tessa was awarded the Tessa Martin Award for Female Vocalists. Students competing in this category prepare three contrasting songs or arias in their original language and perform for a panel of Eastman School Music Professors. After a full day of auditions, the judges unani-mously awarded first place honors to Tessa Spencer.

As a first place winner Tessa then became eligible to compete for, and was named the Winner of, the Jan Di Gaetani Memorial Scholarship for Vocalists. This award is given by an additional Panel of Eastman Faculty to a de-serving student musician who has demonstrated an excep-tionally high level of vocal performance. The scholarship will be used by Tessa for music studies beyond her senior year of high school.

Tessa said, “My private voice teacher Rena Monti intro-duced me to the RPO Young Artist Auditions and told me about what it entailed. I was excited to enter. She signed me up for the competition, it was my first year participat-ing because only a few students, Juniors and Seniors, are selected to compete.”

During the competition Tessa says she was, “Extremely nervous, anxious and excited. When I was warming up in

the room they provided for me I tried to regain concentra-tion but it was difficult because of all the excitement. When I actually started performing my first song in the morning I felt wonderful and relaxed.”

It was Tessa’s first time singing in the Kilbourn Hall on her own and she said her feelings when she first heard her voice fill the hall were almost indescribable. “I felt a jolt of elation rush through me and I felt relaxed and alive,” she says.

The most difficult part of the whole competition for Tessa was waiting for the results. “When they finally announced the winners I had a feeling of doubt, but when I heard my name called, I was ecstatic. I couldn’t refrain from having the biggest smile on my face. I was so excited to perform again for the judges in the afternoon. The whole competi-tion was an amazing experience and I’m so grateful for all the people involved and all the judges,” she says.

Tessa says she has been singing since she could speak and even before then. “I always loved music and singing, but it wasn’t until Freshmen year of High School that I real-ized it could be more than just a hobby.” She first became more involved in music by joining her school’s Select Choir, participating in musical productions and by starting les-sons with her school music Director Joseph Borrelli, and studying outside of school with Rena Monti. “This is when I became more competitive and continued to grow and learn,” she says.

Three of Tessa’s biggest influences are her two “amazing teachers” Joseph Borrelli and Rena Monti and her biggest fan and supporter her father, Scott Spencer. She says, “Jo-seph Borrelli is the one who further initiated my passion and love for music as he was the first person to really dig deep into my abilities and talents. I deem him responsible Instrumental Winners (L-R) Tessa Spencer - Vocalist, Micah Har-

for helping me explore my love for singing. He is the one who recommended Rena Monti to me, she has been an-other magnificent role model and teacher. They are both so passionate about what they do that it is impossible to not feel that passion when around them.”

Tessa performed three contrasting songs during the Young Artist Audition. She sang an Italian piece called “Va Godendo” by George Fredic Handel, an English piece called “Tell Me, Oh Blue, Blue Sky” by Vittorio Giannini, and an Italian piece from Mozart’s opera The Marriage of Figaro, called “Voi Che Sapete.” She prepared for the competition by learning what would happen during the actual competi-tion, digging deeper into the music, and by making sure she understood the meaning of the text rather than just learning the notes. She also rehearsed with accompanist Dr. Nitsche several times to make sure she was prepared to perform to the best of her abilities.

About her future plans Tessa says, “I plan to keep music in my life and hopefully to turn it into a career. I want to

pursue a double major in Vocal Performance and Music Ed-ucation and I have not yet decided a college to attend, but I am looking at several schools with great music programs.”

Tessa will perform at the 2016 RPO League Young Artists in Concert - A Celebration of Winners - on Sunday, July 10, 2016 at 7:30 p.m. in the Hatch Recital Hall at the Eastman School of Music, 26 Gibbs Street, Rochester, NY.

Cub Scouts Hold Pinewood Derby at The Mall at Greece Ridge CenterThe Pinewood Derby is one of the most notable events

in Cub Scout activities. A model car racing event, The Pine-wood Derby provides cub scouts the opportunity to build their own cars from wood, usually a kit containing a block

of pine wood, plastic wheels and nails. The finished car must use all nine pieces in the kit and must meet weight specifications.

Each cub scout unit has the opportunity to conduct their own races during pack meet-ings. Many pack races include parent races, sibling races and outlaw races. There are inspec-tions to insure that all qualify-ing cars have an equal oppor-tunity to win, except for the outlaw class, which is the fast-est class, where cars are modi-fied with razor wheels, small diameter axles and extended wheelbases.

The local Pinewood Derby was held on April 16, 2016 at The Mall at Greece Ridge Cen-ter. Racers for this competition were winners from individual pack meets. Additional op-portunities were provided for cub scouts who wanted to race their cars again, just for the fun of it. Could You Afford To Live To 100?

Do you have difficulty following along with a conversation in loud environments? Do you find

yourself asking people to repeat themselves? Do other people tell you the TV is very loud when you are watching? You are not alone. Current statistics indicate that hearing loss is now the third most prevalent chronic health concern among adults in the US. The best way to know if you need hearing aids is to come in for a hearing evaluation. Aging and genetics may contribute to a decline in hear-ing. One of our patients said, “The improvements in my personal and professional life are outstanding! So many of us have our children and grandchil-dren living out of town. Understanding con-versations over cell phones, Skype or face time is made much clearer using my hearing aids. It is one of the best things I ever did for myself!” Each individual has a unique hear-ing loss, so it’s best to get an evaluation and course of treatment specific to you.

Over the past three decades, the centenarian popu-lation in the United States has grown about 66%, according to the Census Bureau. This doesn’t nec-

essarily mean that you have a pretty good chance of living to 100 — but it won’t hurt for you to plan for a long retirement. And that means investing for both income and growth. Many retirees depend on fixed-rate vehicles for a good portion of their retirement income — which is a real challenge when interest rates are low. Consequently, when you retire, you’ll need to be aware of the income you can expect from these types of investments in vari-ous interest-rate environments. While it’s important to invest for income, keep in mind that many fixed-income vehicles provide returns that may not keep up with in-flation. To help protect yourself from losing purchasing power, you should also consider some investments that offer growth potential. You may not live to be 100 — but it would be nice to know that you could afford to do so. And investing for income and growth can help.

This article was written by Edward Jones for use by your local Edward Jones Financial Advisor.

Recently I have had to ask people to repeat themselves, especially if there’s

a lot of noise. How do I really know if I need hearing aids?

The Greece Community Orchestra under Music Director Jonathan Allentoff per-formed “Music Around the World” on Monday, May 2, 2016 at The Village at Unity Auditorium on Long Pond Road in Greece. Music performed included pieces from Mozart, Nadia’s Theme, O’ Sole Mio!, Danny Boy, Hatikvah, The Phantom of the Opera and more. The evening also included solo performances by Vocalist Joe Falzone and a Flugelhorn Solo by Lars Meyris. Mu-sic Director Jonathan Allentoff said, “We’re delighted to finish our season with music from around the world, and I’m so proud of the musicians in our community who enjoy sharing music with others.”

GreeceNewsNY.com June 2016 27Greece Town Board Adopt Toughest Vacantand Abandoned Property Regulations in the Area

Greece Town Supervisor Bill Reilich announced that the Town Board has adopted the toughest ordinance in the area to deal with the issue of vacant and abandoned properties, commonly referred to as Zombie properties.

The newly adopted Vacant and Defaulted Mortgage Property Reg-istry ordinance will serve as a model to municipalities dealing with issues commonly associated with vacant and abandoned properties. The new ordi-nance requires banks or lenders who commence a foreclosure proceeding in the Town to give prompt notice and provide a cash bond in the amount no less than $10,000, to secure the con-tinued maintenance and safety of the property. To ensure compliance, fail-ure to comply with this requirement will be punishable by a fine of up to $5,000. Additionally, this ordinance creates increased pen-alties for owners of vacant and abandoned structures that are repeatedly noncompliant with the existing Property Maintenance Code and would require owners to provide notice of such vacancy and up-to-date contact information. The Vacant and Defaulted Mortgage Property Registry will provide the information necessary to enforce the existing property maintenance code in connection with property that is vacant and/or entering the foreclosure process. The Town will contract with a company called Community Champions to maintain the registry at no cost to the Town. Administration costs will be recovered through registration fees paid by lenders or owners of vacant properties.

“Since taking office, I have made it a top priority to take a good town and make it great once again. The passing of this local law at the Town Board meeting solidifies my promise to every resident, business and family that calls

Greece their home that we will not tolerate vacant and abandoned properties in our Town,” said Supervisor Bill Reilich. “It is our commitment in fostering continued pride in our community and our neighborhoods that we suc-cessfully took an aggressive approach when dealing with these vacant and abandoned properties. This amendment, which is a first of its kind in our County, creates another strong tool for our Town Code enforcement department to address and enforce the existing property maintenance code and provide additional oversight and stricter fines on vacant structures in our town.”

This amendment is effectively the strongest effort by a local municipality in Monroe County to combat the prob-lems associated with vacant structures or zombie prop-erties. The town has received numerous requests from countless municipalities throughout the state requesting more information about this local law.

Open House for Braddock Bay Ecosystem Restoration Project

On April 26, 2016 Supervisor Bill Reilich joined representatives from the United States Army Corps of Engineers, Senator Joseph Robach and Assemblyman Peter Lawrence at an Open House Event regarding the Braddock Bay Ecosystem Restoration Proj-ect. The Open House was held at Braddock Bay Park Lodge, 199 E. Manitou Road.

It was standing room only at the lodge as local leaders and agency officials discussed the status of the EPA-funded Braddock Bay Restoration Project. Officials noted that the Braddock Bay Restoration is largest wetland restoration project currently un-der way on the Great Lakes, and that it is a major factor in delist-ing the Rochester Embayment Area of Concern (AoC). The Roch-ester Embayment is 1 of 31 Great Lakes locations designated as an Area of Concern under the 1987 Great Lakes Water Quality Agreement due to concerns over water quality and habitat deg-radation. Only 4 other AoCs have been delisted so far.

Phase 1 of the project, which included new channels and pot-holes to increase habitat diversity, is now complete. Phase 2 will begin in coming weeks and will include construction of a new breakwater structure to replace the historic barrier beach that once spanned the mouth of the bay. The new structure was de-signed to reduce Lake Ontario wave action in the bay which has destroyed dozens of acres of wetland habitat over several de-cades. Phase 2 will also include a new navigation channel, which was designed in concert with the breakwater structure to reduce the accumulation of lake sediment which has plagued navigation in Braddock Bay for many years.

“I am pleased to see the continual progress that has taken place at Braddock Bay,” said Supervisor Reilich. “The importance of today’s open house was to ensure that the community was provided with the necessary information regarding the various phases of the Braddock Bay Ecosystem Restoration Project. This restoration project is not only vital to the protection of the wild-life and ecosystem but helps to provide safe boating and recre-ation activity in Braddock Bay.”

Officials labeled the project a “win-win” for addressing both habitat and navigation interests, recognizing the economic po-tential inherent in both. Town of Greece Supervisor Bill Reilich announced plans for as much as $3 million of investment in the town’s Braddock Bay Marina, located on East Manitou Road. He also noted that the marina will be operational throughout the 2016 boating season, and that boat access to Lake Ontario will be maintained throughout construction. The town is seeking proposals to redevelop the marina for the 2017 boating season.
