THINGS TOWWAATTCCHH5

1Rush the passer better.Last season, the Packers finished a de-cent No. 12 in the NFL in sacks percent-age, in large part because of defensivecoordinator Dom Capers’ zone-blitz

schemes. But they were gashed by the three bestquarterbacks they faced — Brett Favre twice, BenRoethlisberger and Kurt Warner once each. Theonly way to slow the elite passers is with pressure, and if you have to blitz all the time, they’re usuallygood enough to make you pay. So, left outside line-backer Brad Jones has to be a decent rusher oppo-site Clay Matthews, and the Packers will needsome inside rush they didn’t show last year. Maybesecond-round pick Mike Neal or even seventh-rounder C.J. Wilson will help, and maybe a healthi-er B.J. Raji, who had an ankle injury in camp lastyear, will be better. Maybe Capers will get more outof inside linebackers Nick Bar-nett and Brandon Chillar asblitzers. But it has to happen,

somehow, some way.

2Aaron Rodgers has to stay on the field.Trite but true. He did his part last year bydeveloping into a true franchise quarter-back. Now he has to stay healthy enoughto play, as he’s done since starting

32 straight games. That means not getting himsacked 41 times in the first nine games like lastseason. That’s a good way to get your most impor-tant player hurt. If Rodgers misses a stretch ofgames, the playoffs could be in jeopardy, and if he’sout for the year, the season’s over.

3Charles Woodson has to continueplaying at an elite level. That’s likely for thereigning NFL defensiveplayer of the year, but

not a given considering heturns 34 in October. Woodsonhas a rare mix of talent and in-telligence that makes him anindispensable playmaker. Hestays in good shape, but any drop-offin play couldhave seriousrepercus-sions forthe de-fense.

4Special teams need to improvein every way.Kicker Mason Crosby has to get past thetechnical problems that plagued him lastyear; Chris Bryan or Tim Masthay has

to be a competent NFL punter; and return man WillBlackmon needs to stay healthy after missing mostof last season because of a torn ACL. Special teamsdon’t have to win a team a lot of games, but it can’tlose them either, and against the best opponents, the Packers will need every edge they can get.

5B.J. Raji needs to become a player.GM Ted Thompson spent the No. 9 pickoverall in 2009 on the defensive linemanbecause the Packers lacked game-changing players on defense. Last year,

Raji didn’t make much of an impact after missingthe first two weeks of training camp while his con-tract was negotiated, then sustaining asprained ankle shortly thereafter thatbothered him early in the season. ThePackers’ defense needs anotherplaymaker to go with Woodsonand Matthews, and Raji mighthave the best chance of any-one. A disruptive nose tacklecan create havoc by domi-nating the middle of anoffense.

Five things the Packers need to doto contend for the Super Bowl

Here is a position-by-posi-tion breakdown of how theroster should take shape.(The number in parenthe-ses denotes how many play-ers likely will be retained ateach position).

Quarterback (2)

Recent history indicatesGraham Harrell will learnthe ropes behind AaronRodgers and Matt Flynn onthe practice squad.

Halfback (3)

Ryan Grant and BrandonJackson are well estab-lished as a 1-2 punch ofsorts, with Grant gettingthe bulk of the carries andJackson serving as a third-down back and solid passprotector. The Packersdrafted a halfback — JamesStarks — for only the thirdtime during General Man-ager Ted Thompson’stenure. That gives Starks, despite his injury history,an edge over Kregg Lump-kin for the No. 3 job.

Fullback (2)

There’s no way the Pack-ers will keep three full-backs again, is there? Theproblem will be decidingwho should get the ax. Weknow Korey Hall and JohnKuhn can play specialteams. We don’t knowwhether Quinn Johnsonwill emerge after a so-sorookie campaign.

Tight end (3)

Pro athletes and motorcy-cles don’t mix, but appar-ently Spencer Havnerdidn’t get that memo. In-juries Havner suffered in aMarch accident might costhim the No. 3 job behindbudding superstar Jer-michael Finley and veteranDonald Lee. Andrew Quar-less dropped too manypasses during offseasonpractices, but his potentialgives him a chance to stick.

Receiver (5)

For the third straightyear, Greg Jennings, Don-ald Driver, Jordy Nelsonand James Jones will formthe Fab Four. Brett Swainis no lock to retain the finalspot after blowing out hisknee early last season.Patrick Williams mighthave the best chance to un-seat him.

Offensive line (9)

Starters include LT Chad

Clifton, C Scott Wells,RG Josh Sitton andRT Mark Tauscher. IfSpitz can’t unseat Colledge,he might get a crack atWells’ job. Rookie BryanBulaga is guaranteed a ros-ter spot along withT.J. Lang. Barring a train-ing camp trade, that leaveseight jobs locked down, with underachievers AllenBarbre and Breno Giacomi-ni along with rookie Mar-shall Newhouse likelybattling for the final posi-tion.

Defensive line (6)

One man’s misfortune(Johnny Jolly’s yearlongsuspension) is another’sopportunity. Exactly whoreaches out and takes ad-vantage remains to beseen. Cullen Jenkins,B.J. Raji, Ryan Pickett androokie Mike Neal form asolid nucleus. Twomore jobs are there for thetaking among Jarius

Wynn, rookie C.J. Wilsonand Justin Harrell.

Linebacker (9)

The Packers aren’t deepat outside linebacker, withBrady Poppinga backingup Clay Matthews andBrad Jones on either side. The inside appears solidwith starters Nick Barnettand A.J. Hawk getting sup-port from Brandon Chillarand Desmond Bishop. Therace for two more spots iswide open.

Cornerback (6)

Charles Woodson, Harris,Tramon Williams, Pat Leeand Brandon Underwoodmake up a solid fivesomeand will be joined by Jar-rett Bush, who despite hisunpopularity with fansrefuses to go away. JoshBell could fill in if Harrisstarts the season on thephysically unable to per-form list.

Safety (4)Bigby and Burnett

should wage a spiritedcompetition to start oppo-site Pro Bowler NickCollins. Derrick Martinwill have to fend off chal-lenges from Charlie Peprahand cornerback-turned-safety Will Blackmon.

Special teams (4)

Place-kicker Mason Cros-by and long snapper BrettGoode have no competition, but the battle between pun-ters Masthay and Bryanwill be intense. It’s possibleBlackmon will be used inthe secondary only in anemergency, which will allowhim to focus almost solelyon his return skills.Mike Vandermause is sports editor ofthe Press-Gazette.

æ Defensive coordinator Dom Capers did a lot of experimenting during the offseason prac-tices. He played Raji at nose tackle and Pickett at defensive end, flip-flopping them from thepositions they played last season. They tried defensive end Cullen Jenkins at outside line-backer. Whether they plan to use any of those combinations during the season isn’t clear.

æ Tim Masthay probably heads into training camp with an edge — albeit a slight one —over Australian Chris Bryan in the punter competition. Bryan had some good days and ex-celled in the pooch punting drills, but Masthay was more consistent. However, Masthay wasslow to get rid of the ball at times, which will be something to watch during preseasongames. Still, it’s no lock that either ends up as the Week 1 punter.

æ If there’s a wild card on the offensive line, it might be T.J. Lang. The second-yearpro missed the entire offseason following wrist sur-

gery, but if he’s healthy enough he mighthave a chance to challenge for a startingjob at a couple of positions, right tackleand possibly left guard.

æ Will Blackmon was switchedfrom cornerback to safety.

Blackmon has been nursinga knee injury during theoffseason and was only alimited participant in off-

season practices. It’spossible the Packers

will allow Blackmonto place most of

his focus on hiskick and punt

returningduties.

General Manager Ted Thompson’s long-term approach to building anNFL team helped the Packers solidify their future at several key spots.

By re-signing Pro Bowl safety Nick Collins, tackles Chad Clifton andMark Tauscher and defensive lineman Ryan Pickett, he remained com-mitted to retaining most of the team’s valuable veterans.

By drafting Bryan Bulaga (first round), Mike Neal (second round) andMorgan Burnett (third round), he helped plan for future openings at lefttackle, defensive end and safety, respectively.

In Collins, the Packers have their playmaking safety and signal callerin the defensive backfield. Along with cornerback Charles Woodson, thereigning NFL defensive player of the year, Collins gives the Packersanother threat to take away the ball on just about every play.

Re-signing Clifton and Tauscher was a necessity given thatwhen free agency started in March, the Packers didn’t have anheir apparent at either tackle spot. That Bulaga was available whenthe Packers were on the clock in the first round couldn’t havebeen forecast. But he was there, and Thompson madewhat was basically a no-brainer pick that might end upgiving the Packers their starting left tackle for the next10 years after Clifton is done.

Thompson could have let Pickett walk given he haslast year’s first-round pick, B.J. Raji, waiting in thewings, but instead he decided to pay for depth and se-curity on the defensive line.

Though Neal and Burnett need some seasoning, they appear to be solid picks who, even if they don’tdo much as rookies, could be eventual starters. Inpicking Neal (and defensive end C.J. Wilson in theseventh round), Thompson wisely found depth to dealwith the possible loss of Johnny Jolly (who eventually wassuspended for all of 2010) and the possible final flop of theoft-injured Justin Harrell.

One of the downsides of Thompson’sapproach is that by virtually ignoring thefree-agent market, it’s nearly impossibleto plug an obvious hole.

So, it begs the question, did he doenough to turn a playoff team in 2009 intoa Super Bowl team in 2010?

That he failed to address glaring needsat cornerback and outside linebacker iscause enough for skepticism.

Who knows if Al Harris can come backfrom his knee reconstruction and be theshut-down cornerback he was? Harris al-most certainly won’t be ready for the startof training camp, and there’s the very realpossibility he won’t be ready for the sea-son opener at Philadelphia, either. Thereare major questions about the depth atthat position. No. 3 cornerback TramonWilliams is solid, but the lack of depthbehind him was evident late last season, when the pass defense crumbled underpressure. Thompson may be counting onPat Lee, but he has a long injury history, and second-year cornerback BrandonUnderwood is untested.

He’s also counting on another second-year player, outside linebacker BradJones, to take the giant step from rookieseventh-round pick to starter. Jones man-aged OK last season after veteran AaronKampman was lost to a knee injury butwith Kampman gone to Jacksonville infree agency, Jones will have to produceeven more.

Like the cornerback spot, outside line-backer was ignored during the draft andfree agency.
