GREEN DRESS CASUAL Thursday, 24 March
Next week Thursday, 24 March is our Green Dress Casual Day – dress green or in trashion. Children can wear their casual clothes – something green or try to make outfits from waste materials, e.g. old clothing. We will be holding Trashion assemblies to showcase the most creative efforts! Please bring a donation of HK$10 that will go towards developing green spaces at school.
Dear Parents,
It has been nice to chat with many of you during our 3-Way Conferences last night and today. I have been very impressed by how confident the children have been in leading the conversations and sharing their learning with you. Even our youngest children in Year 1 were excitedly sharing their learning with their parents. See more photos on our Facebook page.
PTA Art Exhibition
Thank you to those parents who have bid so generously for the amazing art work available. Next week we will update you daily on the latest highest bid for each piece to give you an opportunity to rebid a higher amount and be the proud owner of one of these beautiful treasures.
You can place your bids online at: http://www.kennedy.edu.hk/community/pta/events
Please remember that the school will finish
at 12noon next
Thursday, 24 March.
Please ensure that the person
who meets your child is aware of
the earlier bus drop-off or school
pick up time next Thursday.
ESF Stakeholder Survey
So far 74 parents or 11% of the Kennedy School parent population have responded. Quarry Bay School are currently leading at 21% so let’s try and get the best response rate in ESF! This information is important and as I’ve said previously this is a chance to celebrate the great things at KS and also help us improve.
Families and Friends
Many of you are aware that Ms Reine Barletta who has been a teacher at Kennedy School for the past twenty three years is currently battling a serious illness. Many of our current and past students have had the pleasure and privilege of being taught by Reine. No one forgets Ms Barletta! Reine’s treatments are complex and expensive and a friend of Reine who is an ex Kennedy teacher has created an opportunity for friends to make a contribution towards the cost of her treatments. We are proud of our family and community spirit at Kennedy School and it is at times like this that families need to support each other. Your donation can be through the link below or the bank account details listed. Please do not send any cheques or money to the school. Donations can be anonymous but please indicate if you are a current or ex parent, student or staff member. Please see the details here: https://www.gofundme.com/qmspf884 Please make your contributions for Ms Barletta to the following HSBC account:
THOMPSON, N J. Bank account number: 043-511-575-833
Thank you.
Well done to all our sporting teams this week and the staff and parents who supported them. Enjoy your weekend. John Brewster Principal
EXPRESS YOURSELF
EXPERTS AND PASSIONATE PEOPLE NEEDED!
I am very excited to announce to the Kennedy Community that this year's Year 6 Exhibition falls under the transdisciplinary theme of How We Express Ourselves. Students will be able to choose a form of expression that is meaningful for them and explore it in great depth and share their findings and creations with us all. The students won't be kicking off their Exhibition until after Easter but I'd like to start compiling a list of the experts within our school community. So if you are a painter, a poet, a
sculptor, a writer, a coder, a dancer, a musician, a photographer, an actor, a fashion designer, a chef - you get the idea - please follow this link and fill in the Google form: http://goo.gl/forms/FPQABjxHhp
I'll meet with all interested experts to talk through the process and how you can help. Then, as the students begin to form their interest groups and start the process, I'll connect them to you as a valuable first person resource. Sounds exciting right? It is!
The Google form is live as of now and I'll put reminders in the newsletter over the coming weeks.
Thank you in advance for your interest, your passion and your commitment to helping out the Kennedy Community.

MESSAGE FROM THE MEDICAL ROOM
High influenza activity The Centre for Health Protection informed us that the current influenza activity in Hong Kong is very high. Vigilance should be maintained and the following measures are advised to prevent influenza and respiratory tract infections:
Parents need to check the body temperature of their child/children every day before they leave home for school. To prevent outbreaks of influenza and other respiratory infections, it is of prime importance that children with fever (temperature higher than 37.5℃) regardless of the presence of respiratory symptoms, should not be allowed to attend school. They should be advised to seek medical advice and should avoid school till 48 hours after the fever has subsided.
To receive seasonal influenza vaccination for personal protection;
To build up good body immunity by having a proper diet, regular exercise and adequate rest;
To maintain good personal and environmental hygiene;
To keep hands clean and wash hands properly;
To cover nose and mouth while sneezing or coughing and dispose of nasal and mouth discharge properly;
To wash hands after sneezing, coughing or cleaning the nose;
To maintain good ventilation;
To avoid going to crowded or poorly ventilated public places when influenza is prevalent;
If your child is unwell, please email your child’s teacher and [email protected] to inform us of the nature of your child’s illness.
Sally Connell & Henriette Teuchler Kennedy School Health Professionals

Parents and guardians are invited to attend their child’s class assembly. This is an opportunity for a class to share the learning they have been doing in class. They may take the format of a science explanation, a reflection on a trip, a sharing of artwork, a multimedia display or even a simple story telling. For those parents who are unable to attend, all class assemblies are videoed and available for viewing on the VLE.

We now have many books in our library with a birthday label inside and we love seeing the children's surprise and excitement when we give them a book on their special day. If your child has a birthday in April, May or June and you would like them to have a book in our library with their name inside, then please send HK$100 in an envelope marked with your child's name, class, birth date and who the book will be from. You can leave the envelope in the office or give it to the class teacher. Thank you, Susan Mifsud and Nina Sehgal Library Assistants
FROM THE PE DEPARTMENT
ESF Invitational Tag Rugby Tournament
Well done to the two Kennedy teams who represented the school at our home event the ESF Invitational Tag Rugby Tournament. While we are yet to break our duck the children performed well, the A Team especially, as they topped their group with some breath-taking rugby. Unfortunately they were unable to continue their good form into the knockout stage, narrowly missing out on a final place despite a spirited fight back, beaten by a single try.
My thanks to Ms Maddie Adcock for coaching the B Team as well as Mr Steve Jones and his crew of referees from the HKRFU for volunteering as match officials for the day. Visit our Facebook page for more photos.

Auskick 2016
Hong Kong Auskick is an Australian Rules Football program for boys and girls from 5 to 12 years old, catering to all skill levels and highly compatible with any football background or passion. In conjunction, Hong Kong Junior AFL provides further training, development and the opportunity to play games in age groups from U8 to U15. The programs makes learning to play the team game of Aussie Rules fun, safe and easy for kids. Through weekly coaching sessions the players will learn the skills of the game in an exciting, social and safe environment. It also provides a great opportunity for parents to interact with the kids during the activities, make new friends across Hong Kong, have a kick and just enjoy the greatest game on earth. The 2016 Season in Hong Kong runs from late April to the end of August, making it a perfect off-season fit with other football codes. A modified program is conducted across most of July to cater for holidays. Sessions are hosted by 5 Clubs based in locations across Hong Kong: Kowloon, Lantau (DB), Sai Kung, Sandy Bay (Pok Fu Lam) and Happy Valley. In 2016 our players of all ages will also have the opportunity to participate in a touring party that will travel to compete against Singapore Auskick, and on 3 July our Auskickers have the chance to play on the hallowed turf of the MCG at half time of the AFL game between the Melbourne Demons and the Adelaide Crows. Visit the website at auskickhk.com to sign up, or like us on facebook.com/auskickhk to get updates. Register by Easter Sunday 27 March to ensure your kit is available prior to kit collection for the first session weekend on 23/24 Apr 2016.
Upcycling - Laos Rugby Federation
As part of our ongoing support for grassroots rugby another batch of boots and rugby balls along with approximately 50 tag belts are about to wing their way to Laos. Before you throw out any old trainers or football boots please consider donating them to the Laos Rugby Federation courtesy of the school. Please place any unwanted trainers or boots into the blue bin inside the school office. For this project we have currently donated 288 pairs of shoes towards our target of 710. Please click HERE and HERE to discover about the long term impact your donations are having.

Then enter details of your event or sporting achievement along with a photo of you in action, if you have one. Correct Winter P.E. Uniform
As the weather has become cooler and children are beginning to wear tracksuit bottoms to school on PE or Games days, please ensure your child wears PE shorts UNDER their tracksuit bottoms. Cardigans, jumpers AND tracksuits must be removed for safety during PE and may need to be removed during Games when they are running around. Please also ensure that tights are not worn under shorts on PE days as these pose a slip hazard when shoes are removed in the gym. Thank you for your assistance.

Additionally, for children in Year 4 to 6, please ensure your child has the correct kit for their Unit: Hockey - in accordance with the HKHA regulations all Y4-6 children participating in hockey MUST wear shin pads and a mouth guard. Long socks to hold shin pads are also recommended. All of these items are available from the PTA Office. Rugby - although there is no mandate from the HKRFU we strongly recommend the use of mouthguards when playing rugby.
