Dear Parents,

It has been nice to chat with many of you during our 3-Way Conferences last night and today. ESF Stakeholder Survey

So far 74 parents or 11% of the Kennedy School parent population have responded. Quarry Bay School are currently leading at 21% so let’s try and get the best response rate in ESF! This information is important and as I’ve said previously this is a chance to celebrate the great things at KS and also help us improve.

Families and Friends

Many of you are aware that Ms Reine Barletta who has been a teacher at Kennedy School for the past twenty three years is currently battling a serious illness. Many of our current and past students have had the pleasure and privilege of being taught by Reine. No one forgets Ms Barletta! Reine’s treatments are complex and expensive and a friend of Reine who is an ex Kennedy teacher has created an opportunity for friends to make a contribution towards the cost of her treatments. We are proud of our family and community spirit at Kennedy School and it is at times like this that families need to support each other. Your donation can be through the link below or the bank account details listed. Please do not send any cheques or money to the school. Donations can be anonymous but please indicate if you are a current or ex parent, student or staff member. Please see the details here: https://www.gofundme.com/qmspf884 Please make your contributions for Ms Barletta to the following HSBC account:

Thank you.

Well done to all our sporting teams this week and the staff and parents who supported them. Enjoy your weekend. John Brewster Principal

EXPRESS YOURSELF

EXPERTS AND PASSIONATE PEOPLE NEEDED!

I am very excited to announce to the Kennedy Community that this year's Year 6 Exhibition falls under the transdisciplinary theme of How We Express Ourselves. Students will be able to choose a form of expression that is meaningful for them and explore it in great depth and share their findings and creations with us all. The students won't be kicking off their Exhibition until after Easter but I'd like to start compiling a list of the experts within our school community. So if you are a painter, a poet, a

sculptor, a writer, a coder, a dancer, a musician, a photographer, an actor, a fashion designer, a chef - you get the idea - please follow this link and fill in the Google form: http://goo.gl/forms/FPQABjxHhp

I'll meet with all interested experts to talk through the process and how you can help. Then, as the students begin to form their interest groups and start the process, I'll connect them to you as a valuable first person resource. Sounds exciting right? It is!

The Google form is live as of now and I'll put reminders in the newsletter over the coming weeks.

Thank you in advance for your interest, your passion and your commitment to helping out the Kennedy Community.

March 21st—24th 2016

Our aim for Green Week 2016 is

to appreciate biodiversity. Our

SEPAs have organized 3 competi-

tions to encourage children to

grow plants and

cook food in a

more sustainable

way.

Masarang Monday

Masarang Palm Sugar is a pollu-

tion free, natural sugar which

is better for the environment

and better for your health.

We buy it direct from the

growers and it is processed in

a geothermal village hub. For

more information, watch Nat

Geo’s Sweet Solutions video:

Buy your palm sugar and entry

into the Palm Sugar Bake-Off

from March 14-16th. Then

bring your creation to school

on Monday 21st to have the

chance to win some prizes.

quickly!

Bring $5 to buy a cake during

lunchtime. All profits will go

towards Masarang Foundation.

Growing Tuesday

band. Remember

you must reuse

materials to cre-

ate your holder.

We will also

have a Kennedy Green Mar-

ketplace from 2:30-3:30 in

the playground where we will

sell our organic produce from

our school garden. All Parents

and Helpers welcome.

Trashion Show

Garden Design Wednesday

Bring your garden design in

today. How would you like to

improve our playgrounds to

include more green spaces?

Wouldn’t it be wonderful to

have more plants around to

give us fresh oxygen?

Gavin Coates is an environ-

mental architect, children’s

author and cartoonist. He will

read some of his favourite

stories to us

today and have

a look at all of

your wonderful

garden designs.

It’s time to get creative! Try

to make outfits from waste

materials, e.g. old cloth-

ing.

We will be holding Trashion

Assemblies to showcase the

most creative efforts!

Dress Casual $10 per child

will go towards creating our

garden design.

All week the children will be try-

ing to reduce the use of single

use materials in their lunchbox.

Please can you help your child re-

duce the waste in their snack and

lunch box.

No plastic wrap, zip-

locks, foil, juice box-

es and plastic wrapped snacks!

EARTH HOUR is on March 19th from 8:30-

9:30pm in HK this year. At Kennedy School, we

will have our own Earth Hour from 9-10am on

March 17th. This will give the children the op-

portunity to think about ways we can live more

sustainably. Check out how much CO2 we saved

using the VLE link. Login: kennedystudent Password: kennedy888

Palm Sugar Bake-Off We sold more than 60 entries into our Palm Sugar Bake Off competition. We look forward to judging all of your entries on Monday 21st March. Please bring your entries to Mrs Davies' classroom 6D (room 145), before 10:30am.

We will have a Bake Sale with the entries during lunch time - bring

HK$5 to buy a yummy palm sugar treat. All winners will be announced during Trashion Assembly on Thursday.

Kennedy Earth Hour During 9-10am on Thursday 17th March, we saved 35% electricity compared with 9-10am the previous week. This means we saved 23kg of CO2 going into the atmosphere. Many of us took the time to go outside and think about how we could make a change to help our environment. Please share your pledges with your family and enjoy Hong Kong Earth Hour on Saturday from 8:30-9:30pm.

MESSAGE FROM THE MEDICAL ROOM

High influenza activity The Centre for Health Protection informed us that the current influenza activity in Hong Kong is very high. Vigilance should be maintained and the following measures are advised to prevent influenza and respiratory tract infections:

Parents need to check the body temperature of their child/children every day before they leave home for school. To prevent outbreaks of influenza and other respiratory infections, it is of prime importance that children with fever (temperature higher than 37.5℃) regardless of the presence of respiratory symptoms, should not be allowed to attend school. They should be advised to seek medical advice and should avoid school till 48 hours after the fever has subsided.

To receive seasonal influenza vaccination for personal protection;

To build up good body immunity by having a proper diet, regular exercise and adequate rest;

To maintain good personal and environmental hygiene;

To keep hands clean and wash hands properly;

To cover nose and mouth while sneezing or coughing and dispose of nasal and mouth discharge properly;

To wash hands after sneezing, coughing or cleaning the nose;

To maintain good ventilation;

To avoid going to crowded or poorly ventilated public places when influenza is prevalent;

If your child is unwell, please email your child’s teacher and [email protected] to inform us of the nature of your child’s illness.

The Birthday Book is still going strong and will be continued until the end of the school year. We now have many books in our library with a birthday label inside and we love seeing the children's surprise and excitement when we give them a book on their special day. If your child has a birthday in April, May or June and you would like them to have a book in our library with their name inside, then please send HK$100 in an envelope marked with your child's name, class, birth date and who the book will be from. You can leave the envelope in the office or give it to the class teacher. Thank you, Susan Mifsud and Nina Sehgal Library Assistants

ESF Invitational Tag Rugby Tournament

Well done to the two Kennedy teams who represented the school at our home event the ESF Invitational Tag Rugby Tournament. While we are yet to break our duck the children performed well, the A Team especially, as they topped their group with some breath-taking rugby. Unfortunately they were unable to continue their good form into the knockout stage, narrowly missing out on a final place despite a spirited fight back, beaten by a single try.

My thanks to Ms Maddie Adcock for coaching the B Team as well as Mr Steve Jones and his crew of referees from the HKRFU for volunteering as match officials for the day. Visit our Facebook page for more photos.

Auskick 2016

Hong Kong Auskick is an Australian Rules Football program for boys and girls from 5 to 12 years old, catering to all skill levels and highly compatible with any football background or passion. In conjunction, Hong Kong Junior AFL provides further training, development and the opportunity to play games in age groups from U8 to U15. The programs makes learning to play the team game of Aussie Rules fun, safe and easy for kids. Through weekly coaching sessions the players will learn the skills of the game in an exciting, social and safe environment. It also provides a great opportunity for parents to interact with the kids during the activities, make new friends across Hong Kong, have a kick and just enjoy the greatest game on earth. The 2016 Season in Hong Kong runs from late April to the end of August, making it a perfect off-season fit with other football codes. A modified program is conducted across most of July to cater for holidays. Sessions are hosted by 5 Clubs based in locations across Hong Kong: Kowloon, Lantau (DB), Sai Kung, Sandy Bay (Pok Fu Lam) and Happy Valley. In 2016 our players of all ages will also have the opportunity to participate in a touring party that will travel to compete against Singapore Auskick, and on 3 July our Auskickers have the chance to play on the hallowed turf of the MCG at half time of the AFL game between the Melbourne Demons and the Adelaide Crows. Visit the website at auskickhk.com to sign up, or like us on facebook.com/auskickhk to get updates. Register by Easter Sunday 27 March to ensure your kit is available prior to kit collection for the first session weekend on 23/24 Apr 2016.

Correct Winter P.E. Uniform

As the weather has become cooler and children are beginning to wear tracksuit bottoms to school on PE or Games days, please ensure your child wears PE shorts UNDER their tracksuit bottoms. Cardigans, jumpers AND tracksuits must be removed for safety during PE and may need to be removed during Games when they are running around. Please also ensure that tights are not worn under shorts on PE days as these pose a slip hazard when shoes are removed in the gym. Thank you for your assistance.
