Protection of Streams and the Environment
• Withtheaimofprotectingthestreams,majoreffortsaremadeinordertoallowmaximumrecoveryoftheglycolusedtode-iceplanes.Thede-icingcentrehasahighlyefficientundergroundcollectionnetwork,andusedglycolistreatedandreusedforde-icing.Montréal-Trudeauisoneofthefewairportsintheworldtohousesuchcutting-edgefacilities.
• GiventhewinterconditionsinQuebec,clearingsnowandde-icingtherunwaysarecrucialforaviationsafety.ADMnowusessodiumformateandpotassiumacetateexclusively,astheseproductsarerecognizedasbeinglessharmfultotheenvironment.
• Snowwastefromtheroads,parkinglots,apronsandairplanemanoeuvringareasisstoredindedicatedareas.Inthespring,runofffromthesnowwasteisdivertedintoasettlingtank,allowingparticlestosettlebeforethewaterentersthestormdrainagesystem.
• Waterprotectionequipment,suchasoil/waterseparators,traphydrocarbonsandsolidsfromstormwater.
• Emergencymeasuresandspecificprotocolsareinplaceintheeventofanaccidentaloilspill.

Energy Conservation and Renewable Energy
• In2003,Montréal-Trudeaubeganusingahigh-performancethermalpowerplantthatusesprimarilynaturalgazandgreenelectricityfromQuebec,hydroelectricity,asamainenergysource.Asitdoesnotproducesmokeplumes,theunitislocatedatthecentreoftheterminal,therebyreducingenergylosses.Itisfourtimesmoreefficientthantheoldoil-firedunit.
• Thisuniqueheatingunitislinkedtoaheating-ventilation-airconditioning(HvAC)systemthatisspeciallydesignedtorecoverandredistributethehotorcoldairintheairflowsinsidetheterminal.Otherdevicesarealsogearedtowardenergyefficiency,suchasairtightrevolvingdoorsandspeedregulatorsonescalatorsandmovingwalkways.
• Aprograminplaceforthelastfewyearsaimstograduallyreplacerunwaylightingandairsidelampswithenergy-efficientLEDlights.Motiondetectorstocontrollightinghavealsobeeninstalledinofficesandelsewhereintheterminal.
• Aircraftparkedattheboardinggateareprovidedwithdevicesthatsupplyelectricalcurrentandheatedorcooledairinordertoavoidusingtheirownonboardfuel-basedgenerators.

• Montréal-TrudeauAirportisaworldleaderinairporttechnologydesignedtoimprovethefluidityofpassengerflow.Fromanenvironmentalviewpoint,thebenefitofself-servetechnologyisthatitmakesitpossibletoprocessmorepassengersperunitofsurfacearea,whichresultsinareducedenvironmentalfootprintwhiledecreasingpaperconsumption.
• Theterminalbuildingandits15,000controlinstrumentsaremanagedremotelybyacentralizedhigh-performancecomputersystem.Proactivemanagementofthebuildingtherebyallowsforareductioninenergyconsumptionwhilequicklydetectingandcorrectingissues.
• Tocompensateforthemanywindowsinthenewerareasoftheterminal,aninnovativelight-detectingand“smart”automatedblindssystemreducestheunnecessaryinfluxofheatfromdirectsunlightandtakesadvantageofthewarmthofthesuninwinter.

Protection of Streams and the Environment
• Withtheaimofprotectingthestreams,majoreffortsaremadeinordertoallowmaximumrecoveryoftheglycolusedtode-iceplanes.Thede-icingcentrehasahighlyefficientundergroundcollectionnetwork,andusedglycolistreatedandreusedforde-icing.Montréal-Trudeauisoneofthefewairportsintheworldtohousesuchcutting-edgefacilities.
• GiventhewinterconditionsinQuebec,clearingsnowandde-icingtherunwaysarecrucialforaviationsafety.ADMnowusessodiumformateandpotassiumacetateexclusively,astheseproductsarerecognizedasbeinglessharmfultotheenvironment.
• Snowwastefromtheroads,parkinglots,apronsandairplanemanoeuvringareasisstoredindedicatedareas.Inthespring,runofffromthesnowwasteisdivertedintoasettlingtank,allowingparticlestosettlebeforethewaterentersthestormdrainagesystem.
• Waterprotectionequipment,suchasoil/waterseparators,traphydrocarbonsandsolidsfromstormwater.

Energy Conservation and Renewable Energy
• In2003,Montréal-Trudeaubeganusingahigh-performancethermalpowerplantthatusesprimarilynaturalgazandgreenelectricityfromQuebec,hydroelectricity,asamainenergysource.Asitdoesnotproducesmokeplumes,theunitislocatedatthecentreoftheterminal,therebyreducingenergylosses.Itisfourtimesmoreefficientthantheoldoil-firedunit.
• Thisuniqueheatingunitislinkedtoaheating-ventilation-airconditioning(HvAC)systemthatisspeciallydesignedtorecoverandredistributethehotorcoldairintheairflowsinsidetheterminal.Otherdevicesarealsogearedtowardenergyefficiency,suchasairtightrevolvingdoorsandspeedregulatorsonescalatorsandmovingwalkways.
• Aprograminplaceforthelastfewyearsaimstograduallyreplacerunwaylightingandairsidelampswithenergy-efficientLEDlights.Motiondetectorstocontrollightinghavealsobeeninstalledinofficesandelsewhereintheterminal.
• Aircraftparkedattheboardinggateareprovidedwithdevicesthatsupplyelectricalcurrentandheatedorcooledairinordertoavoidusingtheirownonboardfuel-basedgenerators.
• Commercialaviationhasalong-termgoalofreducingitsgreenhousegas(GHG)emissionsanditsrelianceonfossilfuelbyusingbiofuel,amongotherideas.Montréal-TrudeauwaschosenbyAirCanadatocarryoutaprojectbyCanada’sBiojetSupplyChainInitiative(CBSCI).Thisthree-yearproject,withits14participatingorganizations,aimstointroduce400,000litresofrenewablebiojetfuelintothefuelsupplychain.
A Smart Airport
• Montréal-TrudeauAirportisaworldleaderinairporttechnologydesignedtoimprovethefluidityofpassengerflow.Fromanenvironmentalviewpoint,thebenefitofself-servetechnologyisthatitmakesitpossibletoprocessmorepassengersperunitofsurfacearea,whichresultsinareducedenvironmentalfootprintwhiledecreasingpaperconsumption.
• Theterminalbuildingandits15,000controlinstrumentsaremanagedremotelybyacentralizedhigh-performancecomputersystem.Proactivemanagementofthebuildingtherebyallowsforareductioninenergyconsumptionwhilequicklydetectingandcorrectingissues.
• Tocompensateforthemanywindowsinthenewerareasoftheterminal,aninnovativelight-detectingand“smart”automatedblindssystemreducestheunnecessaryinfluxofheatfromdirectsunlightandtakesadvantageofthewarmthofthesuninwinter.
• Terminalmaintenanceemployeesareequippedwithelectronictabletsallowingthemtoworkefficientlywithoutpaper.
