History
• GPI initiated certification program as a project of the BIEC over 3 years ago
• Received comments and feedback from a wide range of industry stakeholders and environmental organizations
• GPI now runs certification program independently of BIEC but incorporated feedback from BIEC process
• GPI modified standard with guidance from an advisory council consisting of industry stakeholders
3 Tiers of Certification
• Certified
• Silver Certified
• Gold Certified
Endangered Forest Protections
For any tier of certification 95% of fiber must be • Recycled Fiber, or• Agricultural or alternative fiber*, or• Fiber in an FSC certified paper, or• Fiber that meets the FSC controlled wood standard
Publishers may be provisionally certified with 85% of fiber meeting these criteria in the first year
*Agricultural or alternative fiber will only count towards the endangered forest requirements if there is a lifecycle analysis suggesting that the lifecycle impacts are less than those of a similar paper grade produced from virgin tree fiber
Options and Benchmarks
• There are four ways to achieve each tier of certification
• For each option there are minimum requirements for:• Recycled Fiber• FSC Certified Fiber• Elective Benchmark Points
• Endangered forest requirements must be met for all tiers and all options

Review of Requirements
To become certified your company must:• Meet the endangered forest requirement
• Meet the recycled benchmark for the tier and option you select
• Meet the FSC benchmark for the tier and option you select (if applicable)
• Obtain the required number of elective benchmark points for the tier and option you select
How to Apply
• Download supplier spreadsheet and send to all paper suppliers (company you purchased paper from)
• Determine which tier of certification you qualify for
• Complete online application and upload supplier spreadsheets and supporting documentation (you can upload documents from within the application)
Scope of Data
• Include data for books printed in the Previous Calendar Year (Jan. 1 – Dec. 31)
• If no books were printed in the previous calendar year use last calendar year in which your company printed books.
• Must recertify annually to continue using “certified environmentally responsible publisher” seal

• List of certified publishers referenced on GPI website, press releases and promotional materials
• Identify areas of improvement
• Promote continued industry wide progress
