1912: 100 years ago… 1937: 75 years ago… 1972: 40 years ago… 1997: 15 years ago… City Briefs- Dr. Sherwood of Doland arrived in the city yesterday, bringing the little son of Mr. and Mrs. Bern Herr, who was operated on for appendicitis at the Watertown Sanitarium. - Miss Helen Tarbell is expected to return this evening from her visit in Milwaukee, Wis. She will be accompanied by her sister and husband, Mr. and Mrs. Rae Davis. - J.E. Mather and family have moved to a cottage at Lake Kampeska for a week's recreation. - Mr. and Mrs. A.G. Hestad autoed to Castlewood yesterday morning and returned last night. - Dr. H.J. Bartron yesterday purchased a quarter section of land lying seven miles northwest of the city. - Dr. L.G. Hill, who has been confined to his bed for the last few days is so recovered from his sickness that he is able to be out of doors. - Rev. A.M. Work departed this morning for White where he will deliver a sermon tomorrow. Rev. Mr. Work will return to this city Monday and resume his vacation at Stony Point. News- Jackie Warren Tastad, the blond- haired, blue-eyed boy of Mr. and Mrs. Virgil Tastad, 114 Sixth street S.E., Watertown, South Dakota, is just two years and eight months old. He is 36 inches tall, and weighs 40 pounds. A picture of Jackie won fifth prize in a beautiful child pictures contest conducted by the Minneapolis Star, daily paper. His picture was one of twenty chosen from the 5,000 pictures submitted. - The Misses Reita and Rilla Schnackenberg returned home Wednesday evening from Denver, Col. Miss Reita has been attending the Denver university the past year. Rilla spent her vacation with her sister, cousin and aunt, Mrs. Rilla Rilling and daughter, Miss Mabel. She has resumed her duties at Bee's Beauty shop. They are daughters of Mr. and Mrs. E.H. Schnackenberg. Hayti- The Hamlin County Public Speaking contest and demonstration day was held recently in the 4-H Auditorium. The topic for the public speaking contest was "4-H Bridges The Gap". Randall Frederick, Hayti, received a purple ribbon in the Senior division. Bonnie Sauder, Bryant, received a blue ribbon in the Senior division and Stephanie Lakness, Vienna, received a blue ribbon in the Junior division. Purple ribbons were awarded to Eddie Pulscher, Bryant, "Direct Current Power Supplies"; and Kathy Schamens, Hazel, "Horse Sense". Gwen and Cathy Juntenen, Vienna, received a blue ribbon on their team demonstration, "Cheese Wise". Red ribbons were awarded to Lisa Hyde, Castlewood, "Ceramics Is Fun"; Cindy Little, Castlewood, "Tooling Leather"; and Dawn Aronson, Lake Norden, "Basics of Barrel Racing". Judge for the evening was Irene Heaton, Deuel County extension home economist. Business Digest- Thunder Mountain, west of the swimming pool on West Hwy. 212 in Watertown, is now open for business. Al Novstrup and John Sperry are the owners of the new family fun park. Novstrup and Sperry also own a Thunder Road family fun park in Aberdeen. The adventure golf is now open and has 18 holes of golf, surrounded by a waterfall, bridges and ponds. The go-kart track will open in September. - Andy Mahowald, the 1996 Realtor of the Year, presented the 1997 Realtor of the Year Award to Lisa Kieso.
