Green Tech is the major source of strength of the southern Austrian

The Green Tech Valley is located in and around Graz, Austria and is home to 200

technologies and innovations as part of the Eco World Styria cluster. With 20 global

This hotspot of innovation was started over 100 years ago by the Styrian inventor Viktor

Kaplan who developed his novel water turbine in 1913. Ever since then the region, which

is known as the “green heart of Europe”, has always been synonymous with innovative,

forward-thinking enterprises that are committed to environmental technology. Today,

cutting-edge technologies in the areas of Green Energy, Green Building, Green Resources

and Green Eiciency are being generated, bundling the scientiic and economic strengths

of innovative enterprises and research institutions.

Styria is an excellent and fertile breeding ground for research and development. With an

R&D quota of 4.8 %, it is one of Europe’s top three regions and has held a leading position

over the last decade. Since the cluster was created in 2005, Green Tech Valley companies

have grown at a rate of 14 % annually, almost twice as fast as the average annual rate

of around 8 % for global markets. 94 % of this innovative output is exported in global

markets.

The Cluster as Breeding Ground for Innovations

Eco World Styria is the cluster organisation in the Green Tech Valley and accelerates green

innovations and green growth. The 200 companies and research institutions of the cluster

constitute one of the world’s highest entrepreneurial concentrations in this sector and

represent a very unique network. The key areas of focus are Green Energy, Green Buildings

and Green Resources. Within these areas, Eco develops 20 industrial innovation projects

each year.

Based on the triple “I” of innovation, internationalisation and individual services, Eco World

Styria initiates R&D projects, provides support with international roll-out of innovations

and ofers a customised service to cluster partners. Eco keeps its inger on the economic

pulse of the times through the initiatives like the Green Tech Innovators Club and the

Heart of Austria. In the midst of this idyllic landscape are the headquarters of companies

leading in the ields of boilers, and heat and power generation systems using biomass and

bio-fuels. International lagship projects showcase the power of these cutting the edge

technologies.

Innovative leader for biomass boilers (KWB, p61)

With its fully automatic biomass heating

systems, KWB has for years focused its

business on the use of renewable and

eicient sources of energy. Heating with

pellets, woodchip, irewood or even

olive stones also opens up possibilities

for utilising all kinds of biomass and for

achieving considerable cost savings. Modern test plants for simulation, automatic biomass

fuel detection and state-of-the-art instruments promote the leadership.

A better combustion (Combustion Bay One, p34)

Fabrice Giuliani, an entrepreneur from Graz, is a specialist

in the ield of low fuel combustion. His start-up focuses

on the combustion of conventional fuels (oil, natural gas,

coal) which account for up to 80 % of the world’s primary

energy supply. The methods developed at CBOne aim to

achieve a more eicient burning process with a lower fuel

intake and reduced emission of pollutants whilst increasing

safety and lexibility. A novel auxiliary burner which uses

thermoacoustics to optimize fuel burning and increase the

operational range was recently presented. Compared to

conventional combustion methods, fuel is burned in a more

environmentally friendly and cost-eicient way.

Wind generators and motors of tomorrow (ELIN Motoren, p42)

ELIN Motoren GmbH is one of the leading manufacturers

of generators for wind turbines and motors, and develops

customized solutions with innovative technology for global

players. The product portfolio includes synchronous generators

with electric and permanent magnet excitation as well as

energy-eicient and durable motors and generators for wind,

The world’s 1st tidal lagoon hydropower plant (ANDRITZ HYDRO, p25)

The irst lagoon-tide hydropower station is being built at Swansea Bay in Wales. ANDRITZ

HYDRO, the global leader in hydropower plants and based in Weiz, Austria, is supplying

the equipment for the project. The lagoon-tide hydropower station is being erected at

the mouth of the Severn and will provide 155,000 households with renewable energy. The

river beneits during the spring tides from an average water level of 8.5 meters.

The world’s 1st large-scale green brewery (BDI, p29)

The Göss brewery, part of the Heineken Group,

believes in the sustainable production of beer and

is pursuing a future towards 100 % green. The key

technology for this is provided by the Styrian plant

engineering supplier, BDI. With this technology,

all brewery residues can be turned into value and

used as an energy source in the fermentation

plant for the spent grains. As a result, the world’s

irst large-scale green brewery is being realized

in Leoben, Austria, and will be rolled out in the

Heineken Group.

The largest biogas storage in Australia (Sattler Ceno Biogas GmbH, p79)

Sattler Ceno Biogas GmbH has been awarded the contract for

the design, construction and installation of a textile, double-

membrane gas storage (DMGS) for storing biogas in Brisbane,

Australia. With a storage volume of 6,000 cubic meters, it is

one of the largest in the world and the No.1 in Australia. A gas

throughput volume of 50,000 gigajoules per year is anticipated,

GREEN BUILDINGS – pioneer for sustainable building technologies

Companies in Styria’s Green Tech Valley are designing smart, urban buildings of the future

like the Science Tower in Graz, part of the European-wide lighthouse project. Companies

of tomorrow: a recyclable façade system with

hook and loop fastening that can be separated

into pure component parts. The system is very

easy to install and dismantle again.

Plus-energy commercial tower (PVP Photovoltaik, p72)

The world’s irst plus-energy commercial high rise building with

the largest building-integrated photovoltaic façade feeds more

energy into the grid than it actually needs. PVP Photovoltaik

produced 1,200 customized photovoltaic modules of over 40

Medical care LED lighting system (XAL, p89)

XAL, expert for luminaires and lighting

systems, with headquarters in Graz,

The new technology RECOVER imitates

The world’s largest solar thermal cooling facility (S.O.L.I.D., p75)

Desert Mountain High School in Arizona is home to

a very large solar thermal cooling plant, designed

and constructed by the specialised company SOLID.

4,865 m² / 50,000 ft² of collector area and a cooling

capacity of 1,750 kW / 500 tons are used for cooling the

building. Currently it is the most powerful solar cooling

Active Landill Mining

Twenty enterprises and research institutions

from the Green Tech Valley are working on

landill reclamation. Producing and utilizing

raw materials reclaimed from landills is both

unique and pioneering. Older landills, in

particular, contain materials which can be

reused in view of the growing demand for

resources. Consequently, landills become the

future stock of raw materials.

Clean water (ferroDECONT, p47)

The new ferroDECONT method, an innovative

solid/liquid luidised bed process for treating

water contaminated with heavy metals, provides

clean waste water treatment. ferroDECONT has

a clear USP: Cleaning toxic waste water without

the use of chemicals and recycling its material

residues. Zero-valent iron particles make this

feasible.

First 3-way sorting machine (REDWAVE, p73)

REDWAVE has developed the irst sensor-based 3-way

sorting machine in the ine particle range. By rearranging

the outlet guides, grains between as little as 2 and

12 mm can be sorted by both ejector bars with the same

eiciency. REDWAVE sorting machines are used in the

recycling industry in the ields of plastic, paper, e-waste,

glass, metals and wood etc.

The world`s most advanced glass sorting (Binder+Co, p31)

The glass sorting machine Clarity nexxt by Binder + Co is the world‘s irst sorting machine

to sort tiny grains of glass with a size of 1mm. Clarity nexxt analyses information in the

ultraviolet and visible-light wavelength ranges, and recognises and separates foreign

materials and shards according to their diferent colours. By combining a UV sensor with

an RGB camera it is possible to identify and reliably separate heat-resistant special glass

materials from ordinary glass materials.

Recycling of lithium-ion batteries (Saubermacher, p77)

Saubermacher is expert in the disposal of

hazardous and non-hazardous waste, and

recycles batteries for customers like BMW.

The partners Montanuniversität Leoben,

Magna and Saubermacher developed

a technology for the preparation and

recycling of lithium-ion batteries and

storage batteries, and have already achieved

recycling rates of over 60 %.

Landill management with drones (UTC, p87)

UTC are currently deploying UAVs (Unmanned Aerial

Vehicles) to survey landills. These detect complex

project areas and provide comprehensive, three-

dimensional footage used to construct three-

dimensional models. The surveying of extensive areas

of terrain results in aerial and orthophotos, which are

consulted when planning the construction of landills.

aerial survey technology to capture the energy and

heat loss of an entire city. Using drones and hot air
