In Loving Memory Priest's Vestments What do the colours represent? The robes worn by priests are called ' vestments'. Derived from the ancient Romans and Greeks' secular clothing, vestments, which are not worn in everyday life, represent the sanctity of a priest's office and his role in leading liturgies. According to the Vatican, the form of the vestments says that the liturgy is celebrated 'in persona Christi' and not in the priest's name. The priest performs a liturgical function not as a private person, but as a minister of the Church and an instrument in the hands of Jesus Christ. Each colour has a symbolic meaning and aligns to the different seasons within the Roman Catholic calendar. The four main colours are as follows: Green: This is the colour of vestment most commonly worn by priests during much of the Church year, described as Ordinary Time. It symbolizes nature, life and growth. White: Worn on major feast days and during Christmas and Easter, white is a joyful colour representing resurrection. Red: Symbolizing blood and fire, red is worn on Palm Sunday, Pentecost Sunday, to celebrate the Sacrament of Confirmation, and on the feast days of martyrs. Purple: Worn during Lent and Advent, purple symbolizes penance and repentance.

Priest's Vestments – What do the colours represent?

The robes worn by priests are called 'vestments'. Derived from the ancient Romans

and Greeks' secular clothing, vestments, which are not worn in everyday life,

represent the sanctity of a priest's office and his role in leading liturgies.

According to the Vatican, the form of the vestments says that the liturgy is celebrated

'in persona Christi' and not in the priest's name. The priest performs a liturgical

function not as a private person, but as a minister of the Church and an instrument in

the hands of Jesus Christ. Each colour has a symbolic meaning and aligns to the

different seasons within the Roman Catholic calendar. The four main colours are as

follows:

Green: This is the colour of vestment most commonly worn by priests during much of

the Church year, described as Ordinary Time. It symbolizes nature, life and growth.

White: Worn on major feast days and during Christmas and Easter, white is a joyful

colour representing resurrection.

Red: Symbolizing blood and fire, red is worn on Palm Sunday, Pentecost Sunday, to celebrate the Sacrament of Confirmation, and on the feast days of martyrs.

Purple: Worn during Lent and Advent, purple symbolizes penance and repentance.
