GRETA VALLEY SCHOOL NEWSLETTER 5 November 2014 GRETA VALLEY SCHOOL A dynamic rural School empowering students with skills to be future focussed culturally aware and creative thinkers. We build SKILLS for SUCCESS! Dear Parents/Caregivers WELCOME We welcome Ashlee Murray and her family to our school. My apologies to the Murray family, Ashlee turned 5 just before the last holidays and didn’t get welcomed in the last newsletter. It’s great to have you with us in our ever increasing school family. We hope you enjoy being at Greta Valley School during your years here. Our school roll stands at 37 with another new student beginning next week in the senior room. PET DAY A big thank you to all who came along on Friday to join in our school pet day. We thank our judges who faithfully turn up each year to judge the animals and other exhibits. We are grateful for your continued support of the school and especially this event. We were blessed to have great weather and the occasion was enjoyed by all. We really appreciate your support here and have decided to add some other activities next year including inviting a city school group to come and buddy up with our students for the day. We are hoping to introduce some challenging farming activities. ATHLETICS We managed to get long distance, long jump and high jump in yesterday at our athletics meet in Waikari before the hail and sleet decided to fall and we had to return to school. Thank you so much to those parents and grandparents who were able to help with transport or just come along and enjoy the events. After a lunchtime break the seniors then had to finish their discus, shot put and sprint events so that we could determine who to send to the athletics zone meeting next Tuesday at Cheviot Area School. We will collate those results and let you know by Thursday. SCHOOL NOTICES A plea from us, please, please, please check your emails or if you get a hard copy of any notice that needs to have a permission slip returned , to get it back to us asap. SCHOOL NOTICESA plea from us, please, please, please check your emails or if you get a hard copy of any notice that needs to have a permission slip returned , to get it back to us asap. As our school increases in size we need to be better organised, sooner regarding transport details. At the moment valuable time is being spent chasing individuals for responses. Please check your children’s bags daily for notices as quite often they forget to give them to you.

The student Council has organised an ‘Odd Shoe Day’ for Thursday 13th. Just come along wearing odd shoes for the day. The student council will organise activities at lunchtime based around shoes. No donation is required.

END OF YEAR PICNICOur end of year picnic is a Beach Education Day on Monday 15th December at Waikuku Beach. The students will be instructed about safety at the beach and in the surf and will have the opportunity to get in the water and have lots of fun. We encourage you to set this date in your calendars and if you are able to come and join us. We have a barbeque at lunchtime in the reserve and which sets us up for a great day out together.

THANK YOUA big thank you to Marie and Robbie who donated a barbecue to the school. Our old one is getting rather wobbly and is in need of some serious attention. Thanks Marie and Robbie we were grateful to have it last Friday at pet day.

We had a visit from John and Penny from Tipapa this past week. They dropped in several hard copies of a book called, ‘Blast’ by Trish Gibben which is based on Pat Hanly’s paintings. Pat Hanly was New Zealand painter, who lived from 1932 to 2004. Pat was known for his paintings which were protesting about environmental issues. The book will make an excellent addition to our collection and we will be able to look at Pat’s style of painting and base a study around it. John and Penny have donated a book for every school in our cluster group; our grateful thanks to them.

CLASSROOM RENOVATIONSThere have been some delays in the remodeling of Rms 1 & 2. Fortunately work has begun again but it appears to be the old story with sub-contractors overcommitting themselves and others jumping up and down as well. Unfortunately for us we are located so far out of Christchurch that we appear to have been relegated on the bottom of ladder to have the job completed. Aargh!

SWIMMING POOLIn other news the swimming pool is being set up for resurfacing and hopefully we will be ready for the warmer weather as it approaches. We will keep you informed of progress there as well.VIRUS

Please note that there seems to be a virus going around at the moment which causes severe headaches. If you child is complaining of a headache, please keep them at home.

PRIZEGIVING CUPSIf your childwas presented with a cup at the end of last year we ask that you please send it back to school as we are beginning to get organised for the end of year. Thanks for the cups that have already been returned.

On Pet Day I made a sand saucer and decorated bread. I ate my bread before the competition. I also shared a lamb with Adele. Pet day was on Friday and the whole school was there. My favourite part was the face painting.

Pet DayOn Friday the 21st of October we had our school pet day. My mum, dad, nana, Grandma, Grandad, Polly and Uncle George came to watch Elsie and I. When we got to school Adele, Amber and I washed the BBQ tables for Mr Stone. At 11am all the pets started to arrive. My pet was a lamb, Tom. We made decorated bread. Mine was a minion. We also made sand saucers. When it was time to judge the lambs, Adele and I came first!! Then we had the parade. Me and my lamb were Crusaders but I did not win a prize. This year it did not rain!!! This was the best pet day!

Josie Loe

On Friday we had pet day. The whole school was there and Casper and I did the Obstacle course. I got my face painted. I got blood and bruises on my face. Casper came first in the judging. I wish pet day was every day.

Corbin Brace

When I got to school I walked in and straight away Liam needed my help to move the big tyres. Then I finally got to put my bag away but I needed to put sand on my sand saucer. At 11.30 I was excited. I finally got to see Breege again. I got to get my face painted like a half vampire, half devil and half two face. When Zach was doing the sheep competition I had to look after Breege while Zach was with the sheep. At the end, Kane still had $2 so we got two drinks. It was the best day ever.

My trip to Rangiora High SchoolOn Friday 31st October I went to Rangiora High School for my orientation day and did some tests to find out my classes for next year. Mum woke me up at 6.30 so we could go at 7.30 to get to the bus on time. When we got to Rangiora I got off the bus and went to the hall and found where I had to sit. Mrs Burrows did a speech. After that we got into groups and went into different classrooms. My room was J1 which was a Japanese room. Then we met two year 9 and one year 13 students. They told us a bit about their first day at Rangiora High. Soon after, we did our first test. That took about 45 minutes and when we finished it was morning tea time. At morning tea we had a little walk around. After morning tea we did our English test, which was easy! Then we did a maths test. At lunchtime I found my friends Caitlin, Jessie and their other friends. After lunch we had a bit of a tour around the school. We went to the library, one of the art rooms and went to the farm. After our tour we went back into J1 to get our bags. Then we went to the hall to have a talk about our day and we met Mr Hays. We found our buses and went home. It was so cool going to Rangiora for the day but some of the tests were a bit hard. I cant wait until next year when I start.
