    Project 05 | Grid Booklet

This project is to create a grid booklet by firstcreating a grid and applying the elements of amagazine article to it. My goals for this project areto make everything look nice and professional usingthe rules of design and the grid system.

The requirements for this project are to first choose two fonts that will be used for the overall

grid booklet and to s et up a potential grid that will b e used to align all the elements within the

booklet/magazine. After that we were to create 5 pages in I ndesign that would be our overall

article length. Next came draft s where we created different potential layouts for the project

as well as changing the paragraph st yles, image and body text placement and covers for the

    booklet.

After much editing, critiquing and draft s we finally came up with the final draft s for our grid

booklet which were also to be mounted on foamcore and cut to the original sizes.

    Serif Font Name

I have used Goudy Old Style before for my projects and Im very fond

of it. I really like the oldstyle look of this font. The problem choosing

this font is that it doesnt have a bold italic variation, so I might have

to change it. This was the only font that I would hav e liked to have onmy grid and with my sans serif font though, so Im sticking with it for

now. Goudy Old Style is b ecoming kind of my signature font, which I m

not sure is a good thing or not, but I do know that Im very fond of it.

    Sans-serif Font Name

Similar to my serif font, I chose Century Gothic because I have worked

with it for projects before and it is one of my favorite fonts to use. I

really like the roundness of the let ters. This font is similar to Futura

Book which I also really like, but I like Century Gothic because theletters are sort of thin. I am really font of this look for a sans-serif font.

Luckily this font has all four of the variations I need so Im excited that

I will be able to use it. That all depends on if I am able to keep my serif

font because Im not sure if Century Gothic will fit well with another

    sans-serif font or not.

    Instructions

Create an InDesign Document that is 7.5 x 11 with 5 pages. Include

a bleed. Create a grid using a . 25 point magenta line to define the

margins and a .25 point cyan line to define the columns and rows.

    Blog Post

The grid wasnt hard to do, but I didnt quite understand what we were

supposed to do to make our grid. I just did a basic outline of what I

thought I might want to have, but I know that I will be able to change it

later if I need to and especially when I decide how I want to arrange the

elements that will go inside the g rid.

    Concept 1

This first concept is pretty basic and the one I think I might end up

going for in my overall grid project. I like this one because its simple

and easy for people to read. It is your standard page layout, but not

quite like a book but more something you would see in a magazine.

With this layout I think that it is a little more open and easier to read

and gives your eye some room to breathe.

    Concept 2

Im not sure how I like this one because it seems way too cramped to

me. I think if I spaced it out a little and put in some paragraph styles I

could make it look like it wasnt so much information crammed on to

one page, but right now it just looks too jumbled and irritating to get

information out of it. I do think that if I broke this grid style up a bit so

that it had more white space and room to breathe, that it could l ook

really cool. I think there would definitely need to be more pictures,

bullets, captions and things like that so space it out a little though.

    Concept 3

I wasnt really sure what to go for for my third grid concept, but I came

up with something kind of interesting. The thing about this concept

though is that it would require lots of fillers besides the body text such

as quotes or pictures to put in those opposite corner blocks from the

text so that the information and the reading structure wouldnt get

    messed up.

    Overview

For this part of the assignment I picked the grid design that I liked best

which turned out to be the two column grid. I think this works well for

articles in a magazine and in a book sort of format. This gives me room

to add pictures and other things throughout without it seeming too

cramped. Besides choosing a grid outline, I worked on my paragraph

styles for my ar ticle and applied headers, sub headers, and fixed the

basic paragraphs to the way I want them with a 9pt font size and 12.5

    leading.

    Problems

So far the things that Im struggling with are how I want my paragraph

styles to work inside my ar ticle, such as how big I want my headers to

be and also which font of the two that I picked will work bes t for the

body and which will work best for the headers and sub headers. Als o

my article is a little bit short so Im trying to figure out how I am going

to get it to fit o nto five pages without stretching it or making the font

    size too big.

    Goals

My goals for this grid project and to fix up my article are to come up

with pictures and captions I want to add throughout as well as fix upthe headers and sub headers so they fit nicely and I dont have any

weird looking gaps, widows or orphans. I also plan to work on a good

color scheme that I can incorporate into my overall grid/article design,

    including the main cover.

    Thoughts

This was a really fun part of the project for me. I really enjoyed

designing grid covers for our overall project and I actually ended up

having 13 different artboards in Illustrator just full of ideas for my cover.

Ill definitely need some feedback so I can shorten up the list. I kind of

wanted to go for a rusty brown kind of feel for my overall grid s pread

and thats why I chose this par ticular picture to represent my booklet.

Im not certain on it yet, but that is the sort of look I am going for.

    Concerns

I made a few changes to my grid on the inside concerning my content

and such. Im having trouble with leading in to my article and I wantto try and find a way to do it so that it looks professional and visually

    interesting.

    Goals

One of my goals for this project is to find an element or come up

with one to incorporate into my entire grid design that will tie all of

the pieces together. Something that will make it look like every thing

belongs in this booklet. I might be able to do this with just paragraph

styles, but whatever it is, I want the overall look to be something that

looks professionally done and so that it looks like it all fits togethernicely.

    Experience

This was a very tedious project to work on and I found that along theway I ended up making some hug e refinements. At first I had only

a small understanding of the power of grids, but this project has

centered all around using and understanding how g rids work and Ive

found that it really is a lot smoother when you have a grid to help line

everything up. I can definitely see why grids are useful for designers.

Although this was a tedious project I know that working with a grid

saved me so much time than if I didnt have a grid to help me line

everything up to make it lo ok nice and professional.

    Changes

I ended up making multiple changes to my final grid booklet. These

changes were not so much to my grid th ough as they were for my

elements inside the grid. I was h aving trouble with placement because

I found that my article was a little short and I needed extra elements

to fill in the gaps. I had a boring picture for a while that I ended up

scrapping because it didnt work with my design and that opened up a

lot of room for me to make design changes. I ended up using o nly two

pictures that I bled over the edg es and they ended up struc turing my

    article pretty nicely.

    Overall

Overall I think I learned a lot throughout this whole project about

grids and myself as well. One of my goals for this project was to really

make it look good and professional and to make it my own. I went

with an overall feel and look and I went for it and I think that it turned

out pretty nicely. Im happy with my design and that I decided to go

for something different with this project instead of my usual style and

color scheme. This project has taught me a lot and I feel good about

    my work and myself.

Project 05 | Type Specimen Book Conclusion

This project has covered so much in the amount oftime spent. It ended up being on of the projects thatI learned the most from.Learning about the grid system and working with it throughout this project has been extremely

helpful to me as a designer. I wish that we would have worked with the grid sooner or at least

had some time to warm up to it or experiment more. I had a lot of fun with this project and

I really learned a lot. Not only about the grid, but about I learned a lot about myself as well.

with positioning things and making decisions I ended up improving my overall project greatly

compared to my first drafts in the beginning. Throughout the whole project I feel like Ive

learned so many new skills such as h ow to work with paragraph styles, h ow to print and mount

correctly, how to set up grids and spreadsheets in indesign and so much more.

Overall this has been a great learning experience for me as a designer and I feel like I definitely

got out what I put in to it.
