Complete PISTA® Grit Removal, Handling & Dewatering System Flow Scheme

Influent enters flat-floor grit chamber hydraulically guidedby coanda ramp, internal baffles and central, low-speedpropeller. Forced vortex drives grit particles to center chamberfloor and into lower grit hopper while organics and flowcontinue to plant.

1Grit from the concentrator deposits into the parallel (lamel la)plate section of the S&L dewatering screw conveyor, whichaids in retaining finer grit and reducing the stream’s turbulenceand overflow rate.

With 24/7 operation, even the best maintained systems willwear. When it is time to replace worn components, remember there are three material options:

• carbon steel• 304 stainless steel• 316 stainless steel

While you’re looking at replacements, it’s also a good timeto inquire about adding a Fluidizer or the new flow controlbaffles at the same time. The Fluidizer works well especiallywith the top mounted PISTA® Turbo Grit Pump. It keeps thegrit from compacting because it continuously agitates thegrit. While replacing worn components due to usage, it canbe an excellent time to upgrade your system.

3

After years of submergence, you will be amazed at how long the wetted components of the PISTA® GritChamber, seen on this page, last. Smith & Loveless makes VERSAPOX®, the toughest two-part epoxy inthe industry. However, in coastal areas, salt water can even penetrate this tough epoxy with time. Smith& Loveless offers these PISTA® parts that come in contact with water in both 304 or 316 stainless steel. Ifyou live in a coastal region, upgrading these wetted parts from carbon steel to stainless steel, seen below,is a must.

5

The PISTA® Drive Tube aids in rotating the axial flow propellers. If you have the top mounted PISTA® Turbo Grit Pump, the suctionlift weld assembly is housed inside the drive tube and is the conduitfor removing the grit from the grit storage hopper.

Easy bolt-on patented blade assists in keeping the grit in continuousmovement, which prevents packing and bridging in the storage hopper.

Conversion to a PISTA® Turbo Grit Pump

TO ORDER, CALL 1-800-922-90486

Smith & Loveless offers two styles of rugged PISTA® TurboGrit Pumps - the only pump in the industry specifically designedfor pumping grit.

The PISTA® Turbo Grit Pump is available in both top mountedvacuum-primed and remote mounted flooded-suctionconfigurations. Equipped with a Ni-Hard volute and Ni-Hardrecessed impeller mounted completely out of the flow path ofthe abrasive fluid, the PISTA® Turbo Grit Pump also features aheavy-duty, solid, stainless steel shaft, heavy-duty bearingsand mechanical seal. Available in 4” and 6” pipingarrangements.

Many competitors claim to have a 4” grit pump. But their 4”pump is reduced to less than 4” and often as small as 3”, asthe piping enters the volute. This reduction to 3” in the piping, dramatically decreases the performance of the pump. So, ifyou have a flooded suction pump by others and find it’s havinggrit handling problems, call us. Smith &Loveless can retrofit it with a true 4” or 6”grit pump. Additionally, if you have a heavygrit load or seasonal peaks that cause pluggingproblems in your 4” pump, consult us about our6” flooded suction PISTA® Turbo Grit Pump.

Converting from AirliftMany of our original air lift pumps installed priorto 1982 are still in operation. These work welland provide years of dependable service. Wecontinue to produce and manufacture partssupporting these models.

Air lift pumps are usually designed for low flowapplications or where plant air is readilyavailable. If your plant flow has increased, consider converting to the top mounted PISTA®

Turbo Grit Pump. This is the most commonapplication for our PISTA® line. The advantagesare numerous. With the addition of the gritFLUIDIZER, it makes plugging almost unheardof in the pump itself. Constructed with a Ni-HardImpeller and Ni-Hard volute, this makes onetough combination.

Popular Upgrades

The PISTA® has been removing grit aroundthe world for more than 30 years. Smith &Loveless has been around for more than 60years. In order to stay in business for thatamount of time, we have to stay in touch withour customer base. Smith & Loveless hascontinued to receive operator feedback andcontinues to improve its innovative PISTA®

Drive Assembly.

Let’s Start From the Top Down:“24-7” is a strong statement. Simply put, itmeans there is no such thing as rest. Why isthat so important? That is how long your geardrive assembly runs. Heavy-duty, rugged andbuilt to last – nothing performs like a PISTA®

Drive Assembly. Here’s the major parts of thePISTA® Drive Assembly

PISTA® Gear Box AssemblySome of the older PISTA® Gear Boxes werelubricated via grease zerks. These can beconverted to oil bath for less than $10 and will run for many more years. E-mail Tim Paulsen [email protected] for information on how to make this conversion.

The PISTA® Drive GearThe PISTA® Drive Gear has been turning for many years, every day and night. As long as it is not broke“Don’t fix it”. If it is making noise, it can be rebuilt with a “ball and spacer” kit or a new drive gear assembly. It is also available as a complete new unit that should give you another 30 years, as long as the oil ischanged in the Spring and Fall with ISO 68 EP oil (similar to Mobil 626). Changing the oil at least twice ayear is a must. It’s just like your car engine. This is the most important maintenance you can do. If youneed a complete PISTA® Bull Gear Drive, it is part number 11L232. If you need a new Gear Box CoverPlate, it’s P/N: 67B145.

PISTA® Gear Reducer and MotorThere are people who rework the PISTA® Gear Reducer, but for most towns it is not feasible. The projectoften costs more in parts and labor than a new PISTA® Gear Reducer. This is why we recommend the7L331B complete Gear Reducer Assembly. It is quick to bolt on and is simple to install. (It takes less than1 hour). Also, while we’re on the subject, let’s talk motors. It does not make sense to rewind such a small1 to 2 hp motor. Also, it would not make sense to replace bearings. So just order a 7L230C-HE and bedone with it. After all, you have enough projects that the city or town can really save money on by repairingversus replacing.

Popular Upgrades

Smith & Loveless recommends a preventativemaintenance prevision to drain your PISTA® GritChamber once a year for inspection of the wetteditems. Just like our pump stations, Smith &Loveless works to make everything easilyaccessible for the operator and technicians. Oncedrained, the floor of the chamber will have grit thathas not made it to the grit hopper. Remember “youhave essentially frozen a moment in time”.

Examine the pattern of grit on the floor. The goalis to show a longer grit path (even grit distribution)within the flow pattern process, which increasesthe amount of grit being captured on the chamber’spatented flat floor. If you have experienced a lot of low flow conditions because of changes in flowdistribution, you may see a shortened grit path. This can be determined by a large amount of grit built upnear the inlet channel. If so, the patented PISTA® Flow Control Baffle may be just the ticket. This designprovides many engineering benefits and cost saving considerations. During periods of low flow, the patentedPISTA® Flow Control Baffle extends the grit extraction path within the vortexing PISTA® Grit Chamberand increases the amount of grit being captured on the chamber’s flat floor and then swept across thefloor with the PISTA® Axial Flow Propellers and into the grit hopper.

If you have the 360 PISTA® Grit Chamber model, you may want to consider the patented PISTA® FlowControl Baffle. The newly introduced and patented PISTA® Flow Control Baffle can be retrofitted to manyexisting 360 model PISTA® units.

While you’re reviewing the grit pattern, you will also want to inspect the straightening vane and hardwarelocated below the exit channel shelf. If corrosion is present, the straightening vane can be replaced orconverted to stainless. Also make sure the hopper plates are in place and in good condition. Theseshould be recessed to allow a smooth transition of grit to the PISTA® Grit Storage Hopper. If there isdebris present under the hopper plates, remove it to make sure the forced vortex flow pattern is notdisrupted. Remember, this exclusive and patented design minimizes organic capture, while hydraulicallydirecting grit into the lower grit storage hopper and organics upward and out of the PISTA® Grit Chamber.

The PISTA® Grit Flow Control Baffle permits design flexibility so water elevations can be controlled.Controlling water elevations isimportant because it upholds theproper water velocities in the inletchannel to the PISTA® Grit Chamber. The bottom line – you can adjust forall flow conditions to maintain thecorrect inlet channel velocities with thenew PISTA® Flow Control Baffle.

Not All Grit Testing Methodologies are Created EqualSmith & Loveless has spent a significant amount of money on Research & Development of not only gritremoval equipment, but also grit testing. In fact, Grit R&D has been a continuous process at Smith &Loveless for more than 30 years now. Through this research, Smith & Loveless has learned manycharacteristics of how grit is accumulated, how it flows and how it impacts transfer systems and wastewatertreatment plants.

You will hear others say, “Grit Flows Like Water.” However, from our Grit R&D, Smith & Loveless hasfound grit travels in the water with its path changing based on:

• flow velocities within the channel• waste composition of the waste stream and• obstructions in the flow stream

Smith & Loveless’ R&D studies show that grit tends to travel either on the left or right side of the channel. However, in some locations, grit flows in the center of the channel due to one of the above mentionedpath changes. Because we have found grit has so many variables that can impact where the grit flows inthe waste stream, Smith & Loveless has developed a Grit Testing Methodology that has become thestandard of many engineering firms. In fact, Smith & Loveless’ Grit Test Methodology is the most widelyused within the industry. With samples taken in multiple locations, it allows Smith & Loveless to accuratelylocate, test and report the grit in the wastewater stream and its removal efficiencies. Additionally, it providesthe most representative sample of actual grit throughout the waste stream.

Cont. on page 10

Smith & Loveless’ Grit Test Methodology startswith taking samples at multiple locations at thebottom of the channel: left, center and right sideson both the inlet and outlet. Smith & Lovelesshas noted other grit sampling methods vary fromthis industry standard. These variations include:

• sampling clean “sand” rather than actual grit(while sand is grit, it does not definitively representthe entire grit size range represented in a gritcollection system)

• sampling at other locations where grit typicallydoes not travel and

• measuring and calculating wet grit

These variations to the Grit Test Methodology cansignificantly impact the accuracy of a grit test.

Grit Testing Industry Standard Testing Sand, Not GritSome grit tests pour clean bags of sand into theinfluent and then sample how much of the “cleansand” was removed by their grit removal device. To make matters even worse, they pour the cleansand next to the sample probe.

Smith & Loveless has also learned that throughextensive R&D “sand” and actual grit from awaste stream are very different. Sand dumpedfrom sand bags at the influent travel differently inthe channel than actual grit found in a typicalwaste stream. Actual grit from the waste streamoften becomes coated. The coating of the grit asit travels in the waste stream further impacts howand where actual grit travels in the channel. Cleansand will travel very differently within the channelthan actual grit. Therefore, any grit test performedwith sand will only demonstrate how the gritremoval device will remove clean sand, not actual

grit seen in waste streams. Smith & Lovelessknows this from our extensive research anddesign of our patented flat floor design, as wellas our influent and effluent channel designs.

Grit sampling methods that vary from the aboveindustry standard in the location of the grit samplealso do not provide a representative sample ofthe grit. Some methodologies use a pipe with a1/8” to 1/4” vertical slot in the middle of the pipe. They locate the test sample pipe in the middle ofthe channel to be tested with a submersible pumppipe located inside. Grit enters through the 1/8”to 1/4” vertical slot, accumulates in the pipe, andthen is pumped by a small 10 GPM submersiblepump to the sampling dumpsters. There are threemajor problems with this grit testing system:

1. The velocity of the flow through the 1/8”slot in the sampling pipe in a 5’ longvertical opening would be approximately0.4 fps. This velocity is too low totransport grit through the slot and intothe sampling pipe.

2. This nonstandard methodology onlytries to collect samples from the centerof the channel. As Smith & Loveless haslearned, grit does not flow like water. Gritwill tend to travel either on the left or rightside of the flume. In some locations, thegrit will travel in the center of the channel. Thus, the 1/8” to 1/4” slot pipe samplingmethod could be missing a large portionof the grit traveling in the channel.

3. Most of our competitors only look at whatis coming in and not what is going out.Smith & Loveless’ 30 years of R&D andfield experience has taught us that allvariables must be considered. Theseinclude sampling from both the inlet andeffluent channels as well as sampling atvarious velocities during the testing.

Sampling Methods & Locations

Cont. from page 9 Grit Measuring ImpactAnother variable is how the grit is actuallymeasured. When Smith & Loveless collects thegrit samples, each sample is dried and put in amuffle furnace to remove cellulose, paper, andorganics. After these items have been removedfrom the grit, the grit is then passed through thesieve trays to determine exactly what was in thesample in terms of grit size: 50 mesh, 70 mesh,100 mesh, etc.

Other grit tests follow a procedure of wet sievingor wet screening of the grit. When “wet” gritpasses through a sieve tray, the sieve is blindedand it will prevent the grit particles that are wetfrom passing through the sieve or tray. In otherwords, on a 50 mesh (300 microns) laboratorytray, in a wet grit sample condition, even 70 meshparticles (210 microns) or 100 mesh particles (150microns), will not pass through the sieve. Underdry conditions, the smaller particles would passthrough the tray. Wet sieving is a method thatresults in erroneous grit test data.

In summary, not all grit testing methodology isthe same. When you are considering performinga grit test, when grit sampling methods vary fromthe industry standard noted earlier, it can impactthe accuracy of the grit removal results.Remember:

• Grit Does Not Exhibit Flow Distribution LikeWater

• Sand Is Not A True Representative Sample ofAll Grit Sizes

• Where the Grit Samples Are Taken Impacts FinalResults

• How the Grit Samples Are Processed andMeasured Impacts Results

For true grit capture rates, look to the industrystandard for accurate grit testing of grit in thewaste stream by using the Smith & Loveless GritTest Methodology.

This represents amajor breakthrough in prime sensing technology. TheSonic Start™ probe uses frequency differential todetermine whether there is water in the motor adapterwhich signifies whether the pump is primed. Even ifthe Sonic Start™ probe has some build up ofmaterial on it, it continues to sense prime as theslight difference in frequency doesn’t effect its abilityto sense for major frequency differences. Once theSonic Start™ is installed, routine maintenance ofthe Electrode is eliminated. Operator after operatorreport back to Smith & Loveless how littlemaintenance is now required on the vacuum priming

system, now that electrode cleaning is a thing of the past. With more than 2500 installed Sonic Start™Prime Sensing Probes now installed in Smith & Loveless equipment, it is a very proven technology.

Upgrade your top mounted PISTA® Turbo Grit Pump by adding the Sonic Start™ Prime Sensing KitP/N H87A391A By simply drilling, tapping, adding the Sonic Start™, you will get the most advancedprime sensing system available on the market today. Not to mention eliminating the routine maintenancerequired for electrode cleaning. Order your kit today.

Includes: (1) Sonic Start™ Prime Sensor Probe, (1) Sonic Start™ Operating Module, (1) DIN Connector Cable, (1) 8 Pin Socket, (1) Cord Grip,(8) Cable Ties, (1) Brass Bulkhead Adapter, (1) O-Ring for Bulkhead Adapter, (1) Jam Nut, (1) Reducer Coupling, (1) Male Tubing Connector, (1)O-Ring for Cord Grip, (1) Nut for Cord Grip , (1) installation manual.

Check Your Vacuum Pumps for 26 HGWhile you are reviewing your vacuum priming system, make sure yourvacuum pump is capable of pulling at least 26 HG (inches of mercury)with the valve closed. The Sonic Start™ senses whether the pump isprimed, it doesn’t effect the vacuum pump draw. See page 16, Step 3 for more details on how to performthis test. If your vacuum pump doesn’t pull at least 26 HG (inches of mercury), then the reeds may need tobe replaced or you may need a new vacuum pump.

Pinch Valves andSleeves

The top mounted PISTA® Turbo GritPump, like any other pump, needssome maintenance, so lets look atupgrades and maintenance tips. Thenumber one thing you need to inspectis the vacuum priming system. Thesystem works day in and day out, butalso requires a few hours ofmaintenance annually.

First, install a PSI gauge in the ¼” NPTgauge port on the pinch valve. If thisis set to 40-50 PSI, depending ontemperature, you can monitor thesystem for bladder damage. This setpoint is adjustable by loosening thelock nut on the adjusting thumb wheel. To increase pressure, turn the knobin small increments clockwise. Todecrease pressure, turn the knobcounterclockwise. Adjust untildesigned pressure is achieved.Remember never to exceed 55 PSI.Next, install a compound gauge on thevacuum system. (For moreinformation, see pages 16 and 17).Some fittings may have to be obtainedat the hardware store. With these twogauges, your problem can be easilyresolved, if and when it occurs.Remember you can convert fromeither flooded suction or airlift to a topmounted design.

Call your local representative forpricing.

The pinch valve is a vital part of the vacuum primed PISTA® GritRemoval System. Smith & Loveless’ Customer Service Teamrecommends having a spare Sleeve (Bladder) and Side Gasket ora complete spare Pinch Valve on hand.

Some faci lities replace the Sleeve (bladder) when needed. Otherfaci lities keep a complete spare Pinch Valve on hand. Whicheverroute you choose, it is always good to have one or the other onhand as a spare.

S&L’s Customer Service Team also advises to check the Pinch Valveoperation with a 0-60 PSI Pressure Gauge P/N 1L84E or 1L84H.Start the setting at 36 PSI and check the vacuum priming operation. Some bladders will require more PSI and some less. To insurelongevity, set the pressure on the Pinch Valve at the lowest settingpossible at which the PISTA® Turbo Grit Pump will prime. Thenincrease this pressure by 5 PSI. The 0-60 PSI Pressure Gauge isalso a great diagnostic tool.Quick Reminder: It may take more PSI to seal the valve to allow the PISTA®

Grit Pump to prime in the Winter.

Page 16: Grit Removal System to the Latest Technology

Place a compound vacuum gauge inthe gauge port of the solenoid valve(seen below). You can monitor thevacuum priming system of your gritpump with a simple glance. Dependingupon the reading, you’ll instantly knowwhether:

• the vacuum priming system isoperating correctly

• the grit pump is operating correctly

The compound vacuum gauge is themost valuable diagnostic tool you canhave for your grit pump. It alsodiagnoses leaks and blockages bothon the vacuum and wastewater pumpside. See page 22 for gauge sizing.

Step 1: Know the componentsof your vacuum priming system seenon the chart of this page above.

Step 2: Now take your gritpump’s TDH (Total Dynamic Head)from the Motor Adapter and divide by2.31.

Step 3: Evaluating your system:

A perfect vacuum system is 30 Hg(Inches of Mercury). A good vacuum

To test your vacuum pump withthe compound vacuum gauge, install the gauge. Nowmomentarily close the shut offvalve no. 1. The gauge shouldread at least 26 Hg. If it does, thevacuum pump is good. If itdoesn’t, you will need to rebuildor replace the vacuum pumpbefore going to the next step. Seepage 25 for vacuum pumps andrepair parts.

Step 4: Test this example:

You have a grit pump that is rated@ 30’ TDH.

pump draws at least 26 HG direct withthe valve closed.

Page 17: Grit Removal System to the Latest Technology

Step 6: EstablishingConstants for your grit pump.

For this example, we will say thispump primes at 15 Hg. Your pumpmay vary based on sea level. Ifyou have a working pump, checkit to get the constant.

Step 7: For this pump, anyreading less than 15 Hg meansthere is a leak in the vacuumsystem or pinch valve. Check thefittings and mechanical seal orpinch valve for proper inflation ordamaged bladder.

Step 5: Remember theseconstants:

Example:

30’ TDH/2.31 = 12.98 or 13 PSIfor simplicity.

Pump primes at 15 Hg

Step 8: Any reading greaterthan 15 Hg means there is a plugor blockage in the vacuumsystem. Check for pluggedsuction on the vacuum line.

Step 11: For this pump, anyreading greater than13 PSI means there is a blockedgrit concentrator or dischargepipe.

Less than 15 Hg readingmeans vacuum leak.

Greater than 15 Hg readingmeans a vacuum line plug.

Step 9: For this example, wewill say normal pump operation isat 13 PSI.

Step 10: For this pump, anyreading less than 13 PSI meansthere is suction blockage orcollapsed discharge pipe.

Normal pump operation is 13 PSI

Greater than 13 PSI reading meansblocked discharge pipe or grit

concentrator.

S&L’s Customer Service Teamrecommends you install onegauge on each top mountedPISTA® Turbo Grit Pump. At aminimum, you need one per gritpump to establish the constantsof each pump. Then whenproblems occur, you can quicklyknow where to look for problems.See page 22 for compoundvacuum gauges.

Less than 13 PSI reading meanssuction pipe blockage or collapsed

discharge pipe.

Establish the constants for your pump. In this diagram, we assume the gritpump primes at 15 Hg and has a normal operating condition of 13 PSI.

ElectrodeHousing Tips

Smith & Loveless hasutilized the ElectrodeDome Housing Assemblyfor quite some time. Overthe past decade, continued improvementshave been made for easeof maintenance. (Many ofthese ideas werediscovered andforwarded to us by fieldtechnicians doing theirdaily maintenance). Hereare some facts and tips:

1. Did you know you cancheck the rotation ofyour pump by observingthe direction of thewater in your electrode? If the pump is rotatingclockwise, then the waterin the electrode will rotatecounterclockwise. If thepump is rotatingcounterclockwise, thenthe water in the electrodewill rotate clockwise.

2. Make sure you do astraight cut on yourvacuum line. A jaggedcut at the end of thevacuum line can causeinsufficient surface areafor compression. This isespecially important onquick disconnect fittings.

The new solid stainless steel electrode domeassembly comes fully assembled and ready toplug and play. The assembly also comes in twosizes - the 5-1/4” long electrode 87B309 and the6” long electrode 87B309A for those who haveinstalled the dome conversion kit. Additionally, all brass fittings are now located outside of thedome. And it also features quick disconnectfittings. Tips ContinuedIt is also a good idea to retrim the vacuum lineby 1/4” every 6 months - whether you use quickdisconnect or ferrule fittings. Remember, thestraighter the cut, the better the seal.

3. Extra complete Electrode DomeAssemblies can save you time. Manyoperators have an extra set of completeElectrode Dome Assemblies. They place theextra set in a 5 gallon bucket with half a bottleof dish soap and half a bucket of water mixture. The domes now clean themselves and giveyou 2 extra units ready to go. Simply dry andinstall.

4. The use of plumbers grease or Dupont#2 non-hardening silicone ensures a goodO-Ring seal. It also protects the O-Ring whenthe housing is inserted into the motor adapter.Do not use motor bearing grease.

These tips can help make preventativemaintenance easier and save you time. If youhave a tip, we would like to hear from you. We’ll send you a hat if we use your tip in ourcatalog. We’ll also acknowledge where thetip came from. Send your tip to:

Grit Piping LayoutChecklist for the PISTA® Grit System

Reduce plugging within the suction line, select the top mounted PISTA® Turbo GritPump. The top mounted PISTA® Turbo Grit Pump has a straight suction pipe line andprevents plugging within the suction line.

If the top mounted PISTA® Turbo Grit Pump can not be used, incorporate the followingchecklist with any flooded suction pump in developing a grit removal system with theleast possibility for plugging issues.

Select a grit pump with a TRUE 4” opening throughout the entire pump. (HINT:Many grit pumps claim to have a 4” grit pump, but its 4” is reduced to less than 4” andcan go as small as 3” as the piping enters the volute.) Both the Smith & Lovelessremote mounted and top mounted PISTA® Turbo Grit Pump are TRUE 4” grit pumpsthroughout the entire pump.

Install a plug valve to isolate thepump with a minimum 4” diameterfull opening.

Slope the pump suction line with thepump slightly lower than thechamber. (1/8” per foot)

Never use a 90 degree elbow in thesuction line. If an elbow is required, use a sanitary tee with a clean-outport. Worst case use a 45 degreeelbow. Eliminate all unnecessaryelbows.

Make all suction lines less than 10feet long.

Make all discharge piping less than20 feet long.

Make the discharge valve a pinchvalve.

Never use check valves.

Use good screening equipmentahead of the grit process.

Use dedicated suction & dischargelines for dual pumps.

Set the grit pumping cycle longenough to completely move all ofthe grit out of the storage hopperand continue pumping long enoughto remove all grit from the line.

Never locate a trap in the suctionline or discharge line.

Use Water Flush into the suctionline (Air scour is not recommended)Run Flush Water while pumping.

Design the piping for easydisassembly.
