Preface   The project at hand is to design and develop a model house following one trend theme for IKEA. Themes will be assigned to each class, within which 3-4 groups are formed. Each group is able to choose a room (kitchen, bathroom, living room or bedroom) to design, style and advertise - with the help of a stylist, product developer, online communicator and digitaliser. As a group we have decided to work on the bedroom. As an introduction to the project, students were obliged to attend a guest lecture on how to gather inspiration, detect trends and how to finally utilise this information to develop a product. The following report explains the assigned theme in more depth and serves as a starting point into more research and development. The  Theme   The theme “Experience” is inspired by new and creative innovations that push the boundaries of current design. It is fresh, exciting and targeted towards an adventure-seeking market, who are not afraid to take risks and stand out among the crowd. Whether it’s the use of colour, shape or material this theme is dynamic, vibrant and full of energy.

These colours propose an energetic and lively space. The main and secondary colours, although very different, are complementary as they fall within the blue-purple spectrum. It’s a great balance between the solid, dark colours that will ground the room and the brighter colours that will highlight and emphasise key features in the space. Accent colours will add that contrasting, even somewhat unexpected colour providing depth and dimension to the room. In addition, a holographic element is included that somehow blends all these colours quite nicely and give almost a metallic, futuristic feel. It will be a challenging task to incorporate these colours in a way that is not too overwhelming however, if done successfully this colour concept will undoubtedly create an exciting and visually stimulating space. In the bedroom, it should be considered that it is a room of relaxation so maybe it is an idea to use dialled down, softer versions of these colours instead. Key words: Vibrant Futuristic Energy

Inspiration:  Architecture   Architecture can be a great source of inspiration, particularly when looking for unique, unconventional shapes and forms. It is interesting to see how the direction, thickness and spacing of lines can be used to create a sense of motion even when you are standing still; the room feels alive even in its static form. This might be an element to consider in our own design. Also, the simplicity in shapes allows colour to be more than just a form of decoration but rather a key element in the space. Something that is usually ignored is the power of negative space. There is a difference between a room that is empty and a room that uses emptiness to create drama. This might be something to explore considering such a strong colour concept. Forms like this should be shown as big as possible so that the effect is fully seen. This line pattern could be considered as curtains, a carpet or even the bed cover and sheets. Key words: Minimalistic Motion Negative space

Inspiration:  Soft  Goods     By looking at soft goods such as clothing, fabrics and various other materials, one can explore different textures, patterns, colour and technique. A few soft goods mentioned are; holographic shine, dynamic mesh, amplified stitch and extreme marbling. Mesh is commonly used in sports apparel for its functional purposes so it is fun to see it used in other applications. In the example shown above, it seems the mesh is created using laser cutting. This technique is especially interesting as it incorporates a technology that is not usually seen within interior textiles, again referencing this futuristic feel with an unexpected twist. Marble, a naturally occurring rock, is used frequently for flooring and counter tops however in this example it is translated into an abstract, almost watercolour effect, pattern. This idea of hard and soft is a nice idea to play around with. Marbling is also random, giving a free-form dynamic to the pattern. Stitching can be used as a small but impactful detail to many textiles. It is seemingly unobtrusive and does not distract the viewer from the entire room but at the same time adds intricacy and a little more personality. Its these usually overseen details that catch your attention the most.

Inspiration:  Hard  Goods   Hard goods are the functional pieces in the room. They have to fulfil a specific need but that doesn’t necessarily mean that they cannot be used as a form of decoration or art as well. Pieces such as these can instantly brighten up a plain room and add physical fun shapes and silhouettes. In the bedroom, the bigger pieces of furniture are the bed and wardrobe. These are the more functional items and first need to serve a purpose. There is more room to experiment with accent pieces such as side tables, ottomans, benches and smaller pieces of storage. Key words Function Silhouette

Inspiration:  Lighting   Lighting is a great way to bring the attention upwards. Lighting can also be used to create a certain ambience, depending on the effect desired. From lanterns, lamps, chandeliers, sconces and even candlelight, lighting plays an important role and often completes the look of the room. Besides its function, bringing in a playful shape to the ceiling is a nice way to fill the empty space. The examples shown above are quite fitting to theme as the shadows and light effects produced are quite interactive and intensify the dimension in the room. Key words Ambience Dimension Attention-grabbing

Conclusion   The theme “Experience” allows a lot of freedom to explore and experiment with unconventional ideas. As mentioned before, a balance must be found that is able to incorporate the many aspects of colour, shape, material and forms without being overwhelming, especially considering the idea that the bedroom is a place of relaxation. Throughout the report, a few key words have been noted that will be kept in mind when picking out pieces and styling the room. At this moment a futuristic, minimal space with unique and unexpected silhouettes is envisioned, bringing in small and intricate details with the use of colour and the techniques seen from the soft goods inspiration. All in all, this project will be a great showcase of teamwork and collaborating with other creative minds. It will be a great test of communication and creativity to produce a beautiful and unique living space with the great experience of designing for IKEA.
