Comfort Quilts – Terry W.

I would like to thank Anna Smith for her kind donation of fabric, after cleaning out her sewing room. Some we can use and the rest will be passed along to someone else. Evergreen House phoned me and is arranging a tea as a thank you for our quilts, donated to the seniors in their care. This is to be on the 25th November at 2 pm. Please let me know if you are interested in attending. They would like about six people. Some of the seniors would personally like to thank us for their quilts. I have some kits and tops to be machine quilted if anybody has some spare time.

Happy Birthday Jaye!

Here’s a picture of Jaye celebrating her 98th birthday at the October meeting. What a great photo and if you want to see it again check out the CQA Facebook page: https://www.facebook.com/canadianquilters/posts/756383687843975

Stitch-in – Tracey & Kathy A.

Thank you to all who participated in the wool pineapple needle kits group, at our regular October meeting. We had a great turn-out of 27 people plus Kathy and Tracey, the instructors. Two of those ladies were watching and 25 ladies participated in making a lovely needle kit.

We worked really hard at learning a few stitches on a needle kit that was provided by our wonderful program department. The supplies were from Wool Penny Rugs, Kerry Karram. For those who attended and would like some additional help on their needle kits, Kathy Alexander is having her second stitch in this year on November 14th at 10 am. Tracey will be there as well, with some additional threads to help you finish your needle kits and provide you with some more threads if you require. The yellow threads for the pineapple will be there. So come and join in the fun and finish your project for the next guild meeting, so we can all show them off.

I had wonderful feedback from a few people on how much fun and enjoyment they had on learning a new fiber arts project. Embroidery is a very relaxing hobby, and can certainly embellish any quilt quite beautifully.

Please call Kathy if you are planning on attending the stitch-in. Her address is 3433 Robinson Road and

her phone number is 604-986-6471.

This month we welcome Krista Hennebury who will show her newest quilts, patterns and book. I am sure she will inspire us to experiment with the Modern Quilting style. With our show coming up in June think new ideas! December is our pot-luck luncheon and Christmas party and I invite you to bring a Christmas theme quilt for show and tell. Even if you have shown it before, it will be fun to see it again and decorate the hall with lots of quilts for the party. At the January meeting we will be sewing the Slab blocks for the CQA project to make quilts for Ronald MacDonald houses across the country in celebration of Canada's 150th birthday. I will have a sign-up sheet for bringing sewing machines, cutting equipment or other things we will need. Please be checking your stashes for any children friendly fabrics you could bring to add to the Canada 150 fabric we are purchasing to use. The Challenge to make a postcard for our guild birthday celebration and June show has brought many questions about how to go about putting it together. Could anyone who has a postcard of two bring them to the meeting to show and I will also have some visual information ready to show. Thank you. A few people have signed up for the UFO challenge; the sheet will be available at the meeting for more of you to add to it. This is a great way to get a quilt done for the show and possibly win a prize! The dates for two workshops have been chosen and are as follows: Dyeing Workshop with Karen Johnson

Saturday, February 18th, 2017, 10:30-4:30 Delbrook Community Centre Cedar Room This workshop will have you hand-dyeing a color wheel array of gorgeous fabric and learning the ice dyeing process. Cost will be $50

Painting and Stitching on Watercolor paper/fabric Background with Kathy McColeman

Saturday, April 22nd , 2017, 10:30-4:30 Parkgate Community Centre Kathy will supply the watercolor paper with the picture to be painted, or you can draw your own, then the afternoon will be spent stitching. Cost will be $50

Library – Jan C.

The library has purchased two new books.

"Sunday Morning Quilts" by Amanda Jean Nyberg

and Cheryl Arkison. This book has 16 modern scrap projects and will be available to borrow at

the November meeting.

"The Right-Handed Embroiderer's Companion" by Yvette Stanton. This is the book that Tracey

referenced for her wonderful class at our October meeting. It will be available in December.

Thanks for the suggestions.

Comment – Sharon W.

In the recent Loose Threads email I received from Quilter’s Connection magazine, Heather wrote about

a blogger she follows and a recent blog post. The blog is called The Bitchy Stitcher and Megan who

writes it describes herself as ‘a writer, a designer, an editor, and once in awhile I make a quilt or two’.

Her blogpost of November 3rd is a bit long and there are some numbers but it is interesting. Skip the

numbers and read the start and the end if you want. It is worth a read, I think, to remind us all of the

value – not necessarily monetary - of the quilts we make. Here is a link to it.

Quilt Canada 2018 - Vancouver B.C.

The CQA/ACC Board of Directors is pleased to announce that Quilt Canada 2018 will be held in

Vancouver British Columbia May 30-June 2 2018 at the Vancouver Convention Centre. The Board

looks forward to working with BC guilds and quilters in this premier Canadian quilting event. More

information will be released in the coming months.

The Big Quilt Bee

To celebrate Canada’s 150th birthday we want you to be part of

Canada’s biggest Quilt Bee!

The Big Quilt Bee will be held June 14-17, 2017 at Quilt Canada 2017 in

Toronto, ON. We’ll have sewing machines, long arms, mid arms and an

army of volunteers ready to work on quilt tops and stacks of slabs made

by hundreds of Canadian quilters. But your help is needed!

Our goal is to make and donate 1,000 quilts for kids at Ronald MacDonald

Houses across Canada!

Here’s where we need your help. We need lots of quilt tops and 12 ½” slab blocks incorporating at

least one piece of special Canada fabric.

Use the hashtag #bigquiltbee on all your social media posts to help spread the word!

http://www.canadianquilter.com/events/quilt-canada-2017-quilting-bee.php Susan T. sent photos of our 20th anniversary and Jaye’s 98th birthday to CQA - check it out: https://www.facebook.com/canadianquilters/posts/756383687843975

Ramona Quilt Show – Sharon W.

While down here in Ramona, CA. at our time-share, we stopped at the Back Country Quilters show held in a very large local church. It was much smaller than what ours usually is, but very enjoyable to visit. The Back Country Quilters are a group that meets regularly in the community centre on a very informal basis it seems. I don’t think they have any meeting at all but of course they must have some sort of meetings to organize the show. One of the members was walking around the show with a microphone and she would periodically make an announcement about one of the suppliers and the contents of their booth. I thought she did really well, but she told me she was very nervous doing it. Here are 3 quilts from the show.

This is a Beach Blanket quilt – made out of Hawaiian shirts bought at a thrift store. They are large blocks and simply quilted in straight lines across the blocks. The sign says it has been to the beach many times and also in the washing machine many times. It looked way more interesting in real life!

This was a beautiful old quilt – all hand pieced and hand quilted. The workmanship was stellar and it really was a stunning quilt.

This was the raffle quilt and it really was a lovely quilt – not captured well in the photo. The rows of quilts were quite close together and the lighting was not always great so it was hard to get a nice photo from directly in front of a quilt.
