Hope Builders Update

New at Taller San Jose

I like Mother Teresa’s quote, “Help one person at a time and always start with the ones nearest you.” I learned a lot from her. I learned that I didn’t need to go to Calcutta or Sub-Saharan Africa to follow the gospel and to make life better for people. I learned that there were young people in

Santa Ana that were dying before they’d had a chance to live and that they were right in front of me. My prayer became “Lord Jesus, just help me get one more young person out of prison, out of the gang, off of drugs and on to a full and productive life – inch by inch, just one more.” We’ve been successful at Taller San Jose because you have generously partnered with us in re-constructing the lives of young people. I can only thank you with my prayers.

If you would like to include Taller San Jose in your will or estate plans, please contact Christa Sheehan, director of evaluation and advancement at (714) 543-5105, ext. 112.

Dear Friends,

i recently came across the name badge i wore at my first job. i was a high school student and worked at a hardware store as a cashier and stocked shelves. the owner was my father’s business associate; and, although i was a pretty responsible 16 year old, i’m sure it was my dad who got me the job. i’ve had some kind of job ever since. in those days, my paycheck paid for afternoons at the movies with friends or that must have accessory, not the mortgage and school tuition; but nonetheless, it taught me the value of work in providing me choices. as i reminisced over that name badge, a number of things occurred to me that are just as true to our work at taller San Jose:

1. a personal contact gets you a lot closer to a job than anything else;

2. a job gives you freedom provided you step up to the responsibilities attached; and,

3. if you’ve got numbers 1 and 2 in place, then, the likelihood of staying employed increases tremendously.

empowering disadvantaged young people with the skills they need to get a job and keep it while providing a parent’s endorsement to a friendly employer is what makes taller San Jose work. i am grateful to the numerous tutors, mock interviewers, employers and donors who stand with us to make sure that a young person has the opportunity to get a solid

foothold into the world of work.

Warmly,

Shawna Smith, CEO/Executive Director

Ajob is one of the most important and powerful tools for stabilizing a young life. Focused on a double bottom line, Hope Builders extends the mission of taller San Jose by expanding employment opportunities to graduates of its construction training program. Both the

company’s reputation for quality workmanship and business portfolio are growing. in the past year Hope Builders has become the general contractor of choice for rehab work and accomplished the following successes in numbers:

In January, the office Careers academy launched a business simulation. “we wanted to

incorporate new technology and a new way of learning,” shared Martha guzman, program manager for taller San Jose’s Healthcare and Business academies. “this hands-on approach to learning allowed interns to deepen their skills and exposed them to different real world job functions.”

over the course of the three week simulation, interns acted as employees of a virtual distributions company, materials supplier, corporation and bank. the simulation helped interns strengthen their problem solving, communication, delegation and collaboration skills by challenging them to support the daily operations of each company. interns were required to apply and interview for the various positions and were assigned roles accordingly. tasks included processing sales shipping orders, invoices and checks; preparing orders online and by phone; managing a bank account; and conducting payroll.

Sonia was selected to serve as general manager and was responsible for overseeing the entire operation. “acting as the general manager was a huge confidence boost for me,” says Sonia. “i’ve always been shy, so managing all of the different departments and my classmates, assisting with phone calls and giving tours has helped me

grow and improve my abilities to multitask and prioritize.”

not everyone was as excited as Sonia for the new exercise. Her classmate, ramiro, admits that he and some of his peers were skeptical about the change from a structured training program to an office environment at first. “we thought our instructor was making us do this so she wouldn’t have to teach! on the first day of the simulation she handed us our job descriptions, procedures and chain of command and told us to get started.” within the first week ramiro realized that his instructor was on to something.

“It really forced me to grow. I was so used to being coddled that I didn’t realize I could actually learn how to do something new on my own. Now I know I can do anything I set my mind to!”

taller San Jose looks forward to continuing the business simulation with the next cohort of office Careers academy interns.

Greetings from Shawna Smith
