GRUNDFOS END SUCTION PUMPS
2 INTRODUCTION
A global leader in the pump industry, Grundfos has been supplying reliable, innovative end suction pumps for over 35 years, introducing many improvements in both product and application expertise.
Designed to dependably and efficiently deliver high flow rates at low to medium pressures, Grundfos end-suction pumps are suitable for a variety of applications including:
> water supply
> industrial pressure boosting
> industrial liquid transfer
> heating / district heating
> air-conditioning
> irrigation
Manufactured in ISO 9001 certified facilities, today’s range comprises a complete series of close-coupled (NB family) and long-coupled (NK family) pumps compliant with DIN EN733 or ISO2858.
All are non-self priming single stage, centrifugal pumps with axial suction port, radial discharge port and horizontal shaft.
Each has a back pull out design to facilitate removal of the motor, coupling, bearing bracket (NK / NKG) and impeller without disturbing the pump housing or pipework. This simplifies maintenance and enables servicing of even the largest pumps by a single person with a crane.
In most cases a standard Grundfos end suction pump will more than meet the requirements and many are now available on express delivery from stock.
However, for more challenging installations Grundfos has extensive experience in configuring innovative, bespoke solutions. Tailored configuration from the wide variety of proven Grundfos “modules”, as opposed to blank page custom design, ensures that risk is reduced and even the toughest applications benefit from Grundfos’ reliability and energy efficiency.
For more information on either express shipment of standard stocked models or assistance with specialised configurations please call 01525 850000 or e-mail [email protected]

6 MAKING THE MOST OF STAINLESS STEEL
In 1968 Grundfos was the first pump company to adopt extensive use of stainless steel within its range and today it is one of the biggest producers of stainless steel pumps.
In the most demanding applications, tough Grundfos NB close-coupled and NK long-coupled stainless steel pumps offer increased reliability and extended working life.
Industries where stainless steel versions are typically chosen include:
> Water treatment > Textiles > Aqua farming> Washing machines> Biofuel plants> Chemical industries> Marine> Pulp and paper> Power plants
All Grundfos NB/NK stainless steel end-suction pumps are excellent solutions for industrial applications where both small and large volumes of media need to be transferred or circulated. Exceptional performance when pumping clean, slightly dirty, or aggressive media is just an example of the many benefits the pumps can provide. These media primarily include:
> Drinking water> Aggressive industrial water> Swimming pool water> Seawater > Cleaning agents> Dyes > Fats and oils> Wastewater> Liquid soap> Solvents> Distillates

The NB/NBG/NK/NKG end suction range now comes with the new BQQE shaft seal as standard. With faces made from a new silicon carbide (SiC) material and EPDM elastomer, this seal has better general use operating properties and can be used over a wide temperature range.
> Suitable for use from -25°C to +120°C
> Recommended seal for water / glycol applications
Where pumped fluids may contain oils, which will attack and degrade EPDM, an alternative shaft seal with Viton® elastomer and called the BQQV may be selected. Please see the charts below for a comparison of BQQE and BQQV operating temperatures.
The optional BAQE shaft seal, constructed from metal impregnated carbon and SiC seal faces and EPDM elastomer also remains available. This is not suitable for use below 0°C or with glycol mixtures but due to the hard / soft combination of seal faces the BAQE seal is recommended where better dry running capabilities at start up are required. (The new BQQE or BQQV seals must not be exposed to dry running).

10 END SUCTION CAST IRON FAST TRACK
Particularly in replacement situations, Grundfos understands that sometimes extra fast delivery is essential. This is why it now also offers a Fast Track scheme covering the most popular sizes and speeds of its cast iron range.
For the cost of standard Boxspeed delivery, currently £48, all orders received by 11:00am will be despatched on next day delivery. As standard all models are fitted with cast iron impellers and BQQE seals (SiC / SiC faces with EPDM elastomer). The same models of pumps fitted with bronze or 316 Stainless Steel impellers and / or BAQE seals (see page 7 for details) may also be ordered within the End Suction Fast Track scheme. In these cases please allow an extra 24 hours for configuration before despatch. See the table below for more information.

11GRUNDFOS END SUCTION PUMPS
Faced with the increasing challenge of sourcing spares for an obsolete competitor’s pump, the UK’s leading steel radiator manufacturer turned to Grundfos and their approved MRO partner to propose a solution for their paint line pumps. A new Grundfos NKG long-coupled ISO 2858 pump with double seals was proposed and supplied, along with associated pipework and cabling modifications.
As part of the package an invertor that would ensure the 22kW pump ran at 40Hz rather than 50Hz was also provided, reducing electrical energy consumption by 50%. This resulted in a payback time for the new installation of just over 18 months, energy savings of around £17k per year and greatly improved confidence in paint line availability.
The customer is very satisfied and now discussing new end suction projects with Grundfos.
As part of their ongoing commitment to reduce energy costs, an ice cream factory belonging to one of the world’s largest FMCG companies accepted an invitation from Grundfos to conduct a Pump Audit. This revealed that some pumps were 20 years old and had been installed to run at a constant fixed speed, with flow controlled using a 40% closed discharge valve.
Originally sized at 37kW, a review of requirements showed that although site capacity had doubled since it was first established, modern replacement close coupled Grundfos end-suction pumps of only 15kW could in fact be used. This would have delivered energy savings of around £7k per year.
However, by opting to instead select variable speed Grundfos NBE pumps, the client was able to reduce running speed to 45Hz, saving a further 20% in energy costs and reducing payback to just 12 months.
