Read the biographies of two famous painters, F. de Zurbarán and C.

Monet, in order to learn about their life and some of their art pieces.

After reading the biographies, answer questions about the painters to

gain a better understanding of them and their works.

It is a good point to use charts to structure basic ideas and content.

Adapt the work Still Life, by Zurbarán, for the 21st century.

Explore and use different kinds of art materials and techniques to

make your picture. You will gain a sense of pride that will be reflected in

your creativity.

Work in groups to prepare and give an oral presentation about the

main characteristics of the Impressionist art movement.

Assess your oral presentation and your role as a team member (self-

assessment).

Your work and effort will be praised. So that, your works will be

posted on the school’s corridor.

Use English as much as you can to improve your speaking skills.

If you do not understand something, it is important to ask for another

lecture.

Ten tips for learning success

CLAUDE MONET Biography. Painter (1840 - 1926)

Claude Monet was a famous French painter. His work gave a name to the art movement

Impressionism, which consisted in capturing light and natural forms. His works can be

seen in museums around the world.

Claude Monet was born on November 14, 1840, in Paris (France). He lived with his

father, Adolphe, who worked in his family's business, and his mother, Louise, who took

care of the family.

Monet did not like being in a classroom because he was more

interested in being outside. At an early age, Monet developed

a love of drawing. While his mother supported his artistic

efforts, Monet's father wanted him to go into business.

In 1859, Monet decided to move to Paris and he started

studying art at the Academie Suisse. Monet became famous

in Paris, when the art show Salon chose two of his paintings,

which were marine landscapes.

Some Claude Monet’s most famous works are: Impression Sunrise, Water Lilies, Trees

in Winter View of Bonecourt and La Promenade. Monet sometimes got frustrated with

his work and it is said that he destroyed a high number of paintings (500 works).

Monet captured the essence of the natural world using strong colours and bold and

short brushes. The Impressionists were supplanted by the Cubist movement, led by

Pablo Picasso and Georges Braque.

Monet died on December 5, 1926, at his home in Giverny. Before he died, he wrote,

"My only merit is having painted directly in front of nature."

FRANCISCO DE ZURBARÁN Biography. Painter (1598 - 1664)

Francisco de Zurbarán was a Spanish Baroque painter who mastered a naturalistic style.

The majority of his work followed religious themes.

Francisco de Zurbarán was born on November 7, 1598, probably

in Fuente de Cantos, Spain. As a teenager, he studied painting,

and soon was creating pieces for monasteries in Spain. Later,

Zurbarán also sent his paintings to the New World.

As he mainly worked for monastic orders, the majority of

Zurbarán's work consisted of religious imagery. Many of his

paintings are simple and show his naturalistic style, as well as

his ability in using light and shadow.

Zurbarán's secular pieces include Still Life images, such as Still Life with Lemons,

Oranges and a Rose and Labors of Hercules series painted for the Buen Retiro Palace

in Madrid.

In the 1640s, monasteries offered fewer commissions, reducing his opportunities. With

his domestic market in decline, Zurbarán went to the New World. In the 1650s, he

once again focused on domestic commissions, but Zurbarán didn’t earn the high prices

he once had.

Zurbarán moved to Madrid with his third wife and he died there, on August 27, 1664.

Today, Zurbarán’s paintings mark him as a leading painter from the Spanish Baroque

period.

Use lots of pictures. Remember that you are doing a presentation, not reading to the

class. Your slides should include pictures, not only text.

Use a simple slide design. Have a solid colour as your background and use fonts that

are easy to read (Arial and Calibri are two that are easy to read).

Rehearse at home. The only way to get comfortable presenting in front of your class is to

rehearse at home.
