PORTSMOUTH – On Thursday, November
20, The Music Hall’s Writers on a New England Stage series welcomes the blockbuster best-selling novelist Janet Evanovich. Author of “The Heist,” “The Chase,” and the “Stephanie Plum” series, Evanovich will dis-cuss her electrifying new book, “The Job,” the third installment in the fun and exciting Fox and O’Hare mystery series.
The 7:30 p.m. event in The
DOVER –Unity and generosity are
two virtues that the St. Thomas Aquinas community recently relied upon to usher in No-vember, the traditional month of gratitude. Students, faculty and families consolidated their efforts once again to sustain others.
The challenge began in each homeroom as students were encouraged to bring in as many cans as possible. Friendly competition brought out the best in everyone as students sought to outdo their peers with the high-est achievers set to earn a special breakfast, a dress down day and, of course, bragging rights. And
“high achievement” became not just a descriptor for students’ ca-pacities but also an appropriate caption for the day’s collection. The top homeroom brought in
over 2,515 cans, an average of 180 cans per student.
Led by Associate Campus Minister and Theology Teacher Brett Payeur, student and parent
volunteers delivered the canned goods to Lazarus House. With their predictable enthusiasm and contagious energy, students un-loaded, sorted, and organized
the food items in the Lazarus House food pantry.
Since 1983, Lazarus House Ministries has helped the poor and homeless by providing hot meals, temporary shelter, job training, child care, emergency food, clothing, outreach and ad-vocacy. In so doing, they restore dignity and self-respect in order to empower guests- the poor, the underserved and the homeless.
In its 21st year of partner-ship with Lazarus House, St. Thomas Aquinas again demon-strated the sheer transformative power that emanates from col-lective giving.
For more information, visit www.stalux.org or call 603-742-3206. St. Thomas Aquinas will be holding an open house on No-vember 23 at 1 p.m.
Music Hall’s Historic Theater in downtown Portsmouth, includes an author presentation and on-stage interview with Virginia Prescott, host of New Hamp-shire Public Radio’s “Word of Mouth.” The series’ house band Dreadnaught will play live music during the one hour event.
Said Margaret Talcott, Pro-ducer of the Writers on a New England Stage series, “Through her memorable Stephanie Plum and Fox and O’Hare series, Janet Evanovich takes her readers on
wild rides full of mystery, crime, and colorful romances. At one moment we’re on the edge of our seats with suspense; next, we’re falling over laughing. It’s a great treat to be able to welcome her to Portsmouth!”
With more than 75 million books sold across the globe in 27 different languages, Evanovich is one of the world’s most suc-cessful novelists. Her newest work, “The Job,” follows the im-possible pairing of Kate O’Hare, the tough and intelligent Special
Agent, and the alluring and char-ismatic con man, Nicolas Fox, as they attempt to work together to thwart a vicious drug lord. “The Job” once again demonstrates Evanovich’s ability to make each page pulsate with adventure, froth with laughter, and sizzle with suspense.
Tickets are $13.25 ($11.25 for members of The Music Hall and NH Public Radio). Event tickets can be purchased at The Music Hall box office in the Historic Theater, 28 Chestnut

PORTSMOUTH – Despite the damp and
chilly autumn weather, this year’s 2nd annual ISM Memo-rial Bridge Road Race was even more successful than its inaugu-ral festivities in 2013. This 5K road race fundraiser generated nearly $36,000 to benefit the Sea-coast Community School and the Prescott Park Arts Festival.
“We’ve been so blessed by
DOVER – In 2013, the City retained
the Cecil Group to review and evaluate ways to improve pedes-trian and vehicular access in Do-ver’s urban core. Over the past year several alternatives to traffic circulation and pedestrian and bi-cycle facilities for downtown have been reviewed. A major issue to be resolved is whether down-town’s major streets — Chest-nut Street, Main Street, Central Avenue, and Washington Street — should remain one-way or be changed to two-way traffic flow.
On Sept. 22, the City’s Transportation Advisory Com-mission reviewed the preferred alternative, and scheduled a public hearing on that alterna-tive. The hearing, scheduled for Thursday, Nov. 20, will provide an opportunity for the public to review and understand the circu-lation alternatives. The Nov. 20 hearing will be from 6 to 8 p.m. at the McConnell Center, Room 306, 61 Locust St., Dover, and will include a presentation of the proposed plan and plenty of op-portunity for interaction with the public. The City is very interested in hearing from the public, and all are welcome to join.
“Throughout this process, we have urged the public to par-ticipate, and we have had good turnout for discussion about this complex plan,” said Christopher Parker, AICP, Dover’s Direc-tor of Planning and Community Development. “We are looking for feedback from residents, busi-nesses owners and consumers of downtowns goods and services. We want to understand how changes may or may not impact the vibrancy of downtown.”

Toth was born in Budapest, but relocated to Boston as a small child. She made her debut with the Boston Ballet at age 13, and was the leading star for the Boston Ballet for over ten years. She cherishes the oppor-tunity to offer children the same chance that was given to her by instructing children in dance, and teaching the rewards of training, hard work, and discipline. After the dancers’ performances, Edra will conduct a mini-class, teach-ing audience members to perform the Russian dance! Northeastern Ballet ‘s studio is located in Suite 239 at the McConnell Center in Dover. Please join us at the library for this special ballet preview. This program is free and all ages are welcome. The last time the public had an opportunity to weigh in was a May 15 workshop. Since that time, the consulting team devel-oped a preferred alternative, in-cluding more detailed streetscape components such as trees, paving, and furniture; pedestrian ameni-ties such as enhanced crosswalks and narrower crossing distances; and a refined traffic circulation plan. This preferred alternative includes specific solutions for particular intersections and for overall traffic flow.
Regarding traffic circula-tion, the plan proposed to create a plaza at the Upper Square, and two-way flow for traffic run-ning through downtown. At the Lower Square, the proposal is to narrow up the edge of pave-ment, while redefining lanes to allow for more vehicular traffic to flow through and at the same time narrowing down the pedes-trian crossings, to provide a safer connection between Henry Law Park and Central Avenue.
Chestnut Street is proposed to be narrowed and to add sig-nificant streetscape elements in an effort to improve pedestrian safety and encourage slower speeds by those in cars. “One of the major intents of this project, was to calm traffic on Chestnut Street; to make it safer for those who cross it, and to convert it from a raceway into an urban road, similar to Central Avenue,” Parker said.
Another component of the project is to develop streetscape standards for downtown, to help keep Dover’s downtown vibrant, pedestrian-friendly, and inviting for commerce, recreation, and transportation. All roads within
the Downtown have streetscape elements proposed for them, whether by uniformed street trees, wayfinding signage, or improved sidewalks and street benches.
A video, produced by the City, provides an overview of the project and proposed plan and can be found at http://dovernh.pegcentral.com/, on the project web site, the video will be added to the City’s government access channel, DNTV Channel 22.

More than five hundred runners stepped up to the start line on Saturday, October 11th for the 2nd year in a row to show their support for these two nonprofit organizations and in celebration of the iconic Memo-rial Bridge. The finish line was

Yipes! IPO Hype Can Lead to Risky InvestingAll investors prob-
ably wish they had gotten in on the “ground floor” of
Apple or Microsoft or any other big success story. And, in fact, you can indeed “be there from the beginning” by taking part in a company’s initial public offering (IPO). However, the ground floor of many IPOs may be shak-ier than you’d think — and might not provide you with the solid footing you need to invest wisely.
Of course, not all IPOs are the same. Many large, profitable companies, seek-ing to raise capital, have gone public in recent years through IPOs. However, IPOs of newer, unproven companies share some characteristics that should give pause to se-rious, long-term investors. Consider the following:
HypeLet’s face it: A big part
of the appeal of IPOs is the “wow” factor. It looks really cool when the company’s CEO — or perhaps a visiting celebrity — rings the opening bell at the New York Stock
Exchange. And the rush to buy shares in the now-public com-pany always garners big head-lines. Yet “hype” is just one letter removed from “hope” — and hope alone is not a good reason to invest. Furthermore, no single stock — even one that might have strong growth potential — is likely going to be the ticket to investment suc-cess.
Lack of track recordBy definition, newer com-
panies that launch IPOs don’t have long track records. And while it’s true that “past perfor-mance can’t predict future re-sults,” it’s nonetheless useful to see how a stock has performed in various economic climates and how the company manage-ment has responded to differ-ent challenges over time.
Exceptional volatilityAll stocks fluctuate in
value. But IPOs tend to be es-pecially volatile — not just in their first few days of trading but also in their first few years of availability to the public.
Higher risk potentialGenerally, IPOs of newer
companies are better suited for aggressive investors — those who can handle a higher degree of risk in exchange for poten-tially higher returns.
Nonstandard accountingSome IPOs, particularly
Internet start-ups, use non-standard, or “customized,” ac-counting measures to depict their companies in the best pos-sible light. While these mea-sures are not illegal — and in some cases, may even be useful in illuminating a company’s performance — they tend, overall, to make it more dif-ficult for potential investors to accurately evaluate a business’ profitability, or at least poten-tial profitability. At the end of the day, good old-fashioned profits and cash flow are still the key driver of companies’ stock prices.
As an alternative to pursu-ing an IPO, you could use any extra “investable” money you may have to fill gaps in your current portfolio, based on your goals. Or, if you are truly attracted to the type of business in which an IPO is involved, you might want to consider in-
vesting in a more established company in the same industry.
Taking part in an IPO sounds fun and exciting. But as we’ve seen, IPOs can have some serious drawbacks. And while it may not sound glam-orous, a steady approach to in-vesting — one that involves di-versification, responsiveness to one’s risk tolerance and a con-stant focus on both short- and long-term objectives — is usu-ally the right choice for most of us.

DOVER -This fall, the drama stu-
dents of St. Thomas Aquinas High School (STA) celebrate the tragicomic genius of Oscar Wilde with, a set of two one-act plays. Unfolding the stories in the Greek style, the play begins with a tragedy—The Picture of Dorian Gray, Oscar Wilde’s classic meditation on decline, narcissism, and the search for
eternal youth. The production finishes with Wilde’s well-be-loved and hilarious comedy of manners—The Importance of Being Earnest. Evening per-formance is offered in the St. Thomas Aquinas High School gym Friday, November 14, with curtain at 7:30 p.m. Admission is $5 at the door.
Located in Dover, St. Thomas Aquinas High School

“Other Desert Cities” had its world Premiere at Lincoln Center Theater, NYC , January 13, 2011 and had its Broadway Premiere on November 3, 2011. It was nominated for 5 Tony awards, including Best Play and was a finalist for the 2012 Pulit-zer Prize for Drama. “The most richly enjoyable new play for grown-ups that New York has known in many seasons leaves
you feeling both moved and grat-ifying sated.” Ben Brantley, The New York Times.

Alan Huisman of Rye plays Lyman, her father; Barbara Hilton of Portsmouth, Polly, her mother, and Susan Turner of Ports-mouth, Silda, her aunt. Michael Stailey, featured in last spring’s GT production of August: Osage County, will play Tripp, Brooke’s brother.
PORTSMOUTH -New Hampshire Theatre
Project’s 26th season opens with “The School for Wives,” writ-ten by Moliere and translated by Richard Wilbur.
A classic example of farce and considered to be one of the finest illustrations of Moliere’s comic writing, “The School for Wives” created quite a scandal when it was first performed in 1660. Thematically provocative for its time, the play pokes fun at the male dominance and hier-archy of the French renaissance period and still packs a punch today. Though the male tries to create the perfect, ignorant wife, his fate is that he shall never have her – as she outsmarts him at every turn. He is the bumbling fool, and she gets her true love. For newcomers and fans of clas-sic dramatic literature alike, this
ROLLINSFORD -Garrison Players Arts
Center presents the classic Amer-ican drama “Twelve Angry Men” by Reginald Rose, adapted by Sherman L Sergel.
A young man stands on trial for the murder of his father. It looks like an open-and-shut case, until one juror begins to question the facts. “We may be trying to let a guilty man go free,
I don’t know. Nobody really can. But we have a reasonable doubt, and that’s something that’s very valuable in our system. No jury can declare a man guilty unless it’s sure.”
The cast features Robert Belliveau, George Bradway, Will Britton, William Burr, Chris Dempsey, Mike Doyle, Tom Dunnington, Jan Hanson, Rich-ard Harris, Vic Ingram, Justin
MacDougall, Stephen Desrosiers and Rich Salvati. The production is directed by Autumn Allen.
Performances at the Garri-son Players Arts Center are Fri-days and Saturdays at 8 p.m. and Sundays at 3 p.m. through Nov. 22. Tickets are $18 for adults and $15 for under age 18. They can be purchased at the door, by calling 603-750-4ART or at www.garri-sonplayers.org.
PORTSMOUTH –Drift Contemporary Art
Gallery, located at the Went-worth-Coolidge Mansion Histor-ic Site is pleased to announce Hol Mellema, Hampton-based artist as the exhibition at Drift Gal-lery’s collaborative space located in at Zev Yoga Studio, 16 Market Square in Portsmouth. This con-temporary curatorial collabora-tion features local, national and international artists with rotating exhibitions each month.
Mellema states about her work, “My newer works are cre-ated out of discarded sales receipts that I’ve collected from family,
friends, strangers, and even gar-bage cans. These receipts are ar-bitrary symbols, which stand for items they account for. Receipts, which are so easily tossed away without care, essentially embody the mentality of a consumerist so-ciety, foreshadowing the eventual discarding of the material itself. But many people are able to find use for second hand materials in their lives; items in these receipts may not just be thrown away, but may be handed down, sold, do-nated, reused in so many differ-ent ways.
Reuse and re-purposing gives a new meaning and a new
life to materials, and this cycle maintains a balance between pro-ducing and consuming. Watch-ing this cycle emerge in my work has helped me to become more astute to the cycle in my own life, and helped me to maintain my own balance through reusing ma-terials that would otherwise have been simply marked off as trash. “
The exhibition runs through Dec. 5. Artwork can be viewed by appointment, online or attending any of the regularly scheduled yoga classes. For details, contact Gallery Director Ali Goodwin at 603-379-6560, [email protected].
ROCHESTER -The Franklin Gallery at
RiverStones Custom Framing, 33 N. Main Street in Rochester, will feature an exhibit called Expired Polaroids, featuring portraits by local photographer Michael Penney, for the month of November during regular business hours.
The idea for Expired Pola-roids came about when Penney opened an unused refrigera-tor in his studio that still con-tained various types of film. “I had a box and a half of Polaroid 4x5 type 54 and about 5 sheets of type 55 that had expired in 2007,” Penney said. “I thought it might be fun to see if it still worked. I shot some tests with myself as the subject and like how funky it looked.” He start-ed making portraits until the last sheet was gone. “I shot the portraits with a 4x5 wooden field camera and then scanned the prints and negatives. I tried to keep my hand out of things,” he continued. “The negatives have this brownish look, while the type 54 prints are various tones of black and white.” The results are stunning – every image is different and all have flaws which give them charac-ter.
Michael studied photogra-
phy at the New England School of Photography. Currently the owner of Michael Penney Pho-tography/Miguel’s Color Ser-vice, his photography has been exhibited throughout New England, and featured in many publications including Coastal Home Magazine, Maine Home + Design, and Accent Home and Garden.
The Franklin Gallery and RiverStones Custom Fram-ing are open Tuesday through Friday 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., Sat-urday 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., or by appointment. To learn more about Expired Polaroids and future Franklin Gallery ex-hibits, contact Kris, owner of RiverStones Custom Framing, at [email protected] or 603-812-1488.

packed with smiling faces, cheer-ing fans and the smell of Chili as the 25th Annual WHEB Chili Cook Off began kicking up the heat across the street at Straw-bery Banke’s Puddle Dock.
“We are thrilled to have yet another successful Memo-rial Bridge Road Race under our belts, and are pleased to have partnered with Prescott Park Arts Festival to make it happen,” said Deborah Stokel, co-execu-
tive director of Seacoast Com-munity School. “The race spon-sors, volunteers and prize donors were instrumental in making this event successful, and we hope families will look forward to this event for years to come. It is a win-win for everyone!”
This year’s ISM Memorial Road Race started at The Union Lobster House on Badger’s Island in Kittery, ME then crossed over the Memorial Bridge into New
Hampshire, and completed a 3.1 mile loop through Portsmouth’s historic South End, concluding in Prescott Park. Post-race, there was a free Kids’ Fun Run around Prescott Park that was open to all children. All registered runners received discounted entry and a free drink ticket for Prescott Park Arts Festival’s 25th Annual WHEB Chili Cook-Off and Strawbery Banke’s NH Fall Fes-tival.
...RACE from page 5
All proceeds from the race benefit the Prescott Park Arts Festival’s family-friendly arts programs and Seacoast Commu-nity School quality early child-hood and school-age programs, creating school-readiness. To learn more, contact the Festival at 603-436-2848, or visit www.prescottpark.org. Seacoast Com-munity School can be reached at 603-422-8223, or visit www.sea-coastcommunityschool.org.
DOVER – Dover’s downtown market-
ing campaign, “Get To It! Your Life -Your Dover” has launched a weekly Downtown Scaven-ger Hunt. Participants will have a chance to win a weekly $25 Dover Dollar card and a chance to win $500 Dover Dollars for the holiday season.
Every Thursday through December 18 (excluding Thanks-
giving), the city of Dover will release a clue that identifies the location of a “Get To It!” Scav-enger Hunt entry point prior to noon that day. The clue will be released via social media on the Greater Dover Chamber of Commerce’s and the City of Do-ver’s Facebook pages, on Twitter @CityofDoverNH, via radio on the Bay 98.7 FM, The SHARK and Z107 FM and on the www.
drivingdover.com website. The clue will point all potential par-ticipants to one of the featured parking lots associated with the “Get To It!” Downtown Market-ing Campaign. Everyone who guesses the clue and arrives at the correct parking lot after noon on Thursday will receive further instruction on what to do next. Weekly winners will be drawn at 4:30 p.m. each Thursday until
the Scavenger Hunt ends. The lo-cation of the “Get to it!” clue will change every week so entrants will have to tune-in, follow on social media or visit the www.drivingdover.com website for the weekly clue.
All residents, visitors and downtown employees are eligi-ble to participate in this weekly scavenger hunt. Entries are lim-ited to one per person, per week. To enter to win the $500 grand prize, participants have to go to
the designated business for that week and fill out an entry form that can be placed into the grand prize drawing box. The winner of the $500 Grand Prize will be announced on Monday, Decem-ber 22. For more information on the “Get To It!” Marketing Campaign, downtown parking options, or the Scavenger Hunt, visit www.drivingdover.com.
