HAMPTON – Generations of bystanders and participants have enjoyed the festivities of the Hampton Christmas Parade. Born in 1936, lifelong Hampton resident Glyn Eastman is happy to share his fondness for the parade. “The Hampton Christmas Parade tells me my love of this town is being kept alive. Watch- ing all the young people smiling, marching and waving makes me feel proud, knowing this won- derful town is thriving. It gives me peace in my later years,” says Eastman, who now now resides at Partridge House, on Lafayette Road in Hampton. He attended the Hampton Academy and Centre School, which used to be the high school. He later attended Bentley College and served in the U.S. Navy. Eastman served six years on the Budget Committee and was a selectman for twelve years. Herb Casassa hired him to run the store known as “Colts,” where “Present Perfect” is now located, and where he remained for 32 years and retired in 1984. Eastman remembers the area when, “there was no Route I-95, but instead there was a com- muter train at Depot Square.” He recalls how buses lined up at the SOMERSWORH – The Annual Holiday Gingerbread House Contest is once again underway in Som- ersworth. Lighted Span Connecting Kittery and Portsmouth to Honor Veterans PORTSMOUTH – The Bridge Illumination Sub-Committee of the Memorial Bridge Project officially kicked off the fundraising efforts to light the new Memorial Bridge on Tuesday, November 20, at Kittery Town Hall. The Sub-Committee has been working with the NHDOT and authorities in both Maine and New Hampshire for the past six months in an effort to de- velop a vision and plan for the il- lumination of the new Memorial Bridge expected to be completed in July 2013. The proposed plan calls for the illumination of the footings, the Memorial Plaque honoring veterans and the two towers using energy efficient color-capable LED (light emit- ting diode) light sources. The $80,000, raised through dona- tions, is expected to cover the costs of design, installation, op- eration and utility costs for the first five years. “We believe that this is a once in a lifetime opportunity for our communities to have an impact on this bridge which will be enjoyed by both residents and visitors alike. It is an opportunity to create a unique and attractive connection for our seacoast com- munities and add to the beauty of the riverfront. We also believe that the illumination project will give an emotional uplift to our neighbors and businesses and already we have seen growing interest and support,” said Peter Somssich, chairman of the Illu- mination Sub-Committee and a Portsmouth resident. The Illumination Sub- Committee was initially started by a handful of individuals in- cluding Ben Porter (Kittery), Rose Eppard (Portsmouth), Gail Drobnyik (Kittery) and Peter Somssich (Portsmouth) with additional help from Doug Bates (Portsmouth Chamber of Commerce), and Nancy Carmer (Portsmouth). Recently, two new members with professional light- ing experience have joined the group, Bruce Morriss (Kittery) and Jon Di Gesu (Stratham) along with Gerry Mylroie (Kit- tery). “While many others in- cluding NHDOT were initially supportive of our plans, getting started was difficult. Finally, we took the initiative to hire a light- ing designer with bridge illumi- nation experience to propose a reasonable but affordable illumi- nation plan. The sub-committee hired John Powell from Boston, at our own expense, so that we could have a proposal in hand to begin the discussions. John’s projects include the lighting of the bridges spanning the Charles River,” said Somssich. Denis Switzer, contract ad- ministrator and Keith Cota, chief project manager, at NHDOT, have engaged with John Powell regarding the requirements and needs of the bridge to ac- commodate the illumination project. In the course of these discussions, the planned con- ventional street lighting was also stop to transport vacationers to Hampton Beach. PORTSMOUTH –The Portsmouth Police

Department hosted the “Ports-mouth Police Turkey Bowl 2012” on Wednesday, Novem-ber 21, under the lights at Ports-mouth High School on the Tom Daubney Football Field, with the goal of raising money and donations to aid the victims of Hurricane Sandy in New York and New Jersey.

A total of eight teams made up of local police de-partments, fire departments and military participated in the double elimination tourna-ment. Departments that par-ticipated include Portsmouth PD, Dover PD, York PD, York Beach Fire, Dover Fire, NH Air Guard 157th Security Forces Squadron, Rye PD, Green-

land PD, Stratham PD, North Hampton PD, North Hampton

nizers include Det. Matthew Hester, Lt. Chris Cummings, Sgt. Rich Webb and Ofc. Steve Blanding of Portsmouth PD, and Ofc. Alex Mitrushi of Dover PD. Hester felt that do-nations collected at this tourna-ment would make a significant, positive impact on those hit hardest by Sandy, “Portsmouth Police and Portsmouth Fire have been playing a flag foot-ball game on Thanksgiving Eve for the past eight years. With the recent disaster to the New York and New Jersey areas, we truly want to assist in any way we can. It’s good to get all of these departments together for a positive cause, especially since we are usually brought together only in the bad times,” he said.

Concessions such as snacks, pizza, coffee and hot chocolate were sold at the event to help raise money. A big thank you goes out to Port City Coffee Roaster of Portsmouth

for donating the coffee. All ticket and concession proceeds went directly toward buying supplies for the hurricane vic-tims.

Those who were unable to attend may still donate by sending checks made out to Portsmouth Police Relief As-sociation to Portsmouth PD, 3 Junkins Ave., Portsmouth, NH 03801, or by dropping off supplies at the Portsmouth or Dover Police Departments or the York Beach Fire Depart-ment. Supplies still in demand are winter clothing, jackets, hand/foot warmers, batter-ies, cleaning supplies and gift cards. Event details and results can be found on the Facebook event page titled “Portsmouth Police Turkey Bowl 2012 ‘Foot-ball for a Cause.’” For more information on how you can help, contact Hester at [email protected] or Mitrushi at [email protected].

Winners will be chosen at Sunday’s event.

You are invit-ed to meet Miss Seabrook (Kerry Sears) and Miss New York (Mal-lory Hagen) who will be gracing this fun, exciting event. They encourage one and all to enjoy a wonderful evening supporting the Marine Corps Toys for Tots drive to collect unwrapped toys and donations for children.

Remember to bring an unwrapped toy for the Marine Corps Toys for Tots Fund Raiser. (Cash donations will also be ac-cepted by the Marine Corpsmen)

On Sunday, December 2, all children and parents are wel-come to join the stars and the US Marines at the Portsmouth American Legion from 2 to 7 p.m. There will be games and a special visit from Santa and Mrs. Claus at 3:30 pm. Any questions, contact Panther at 603-205-0902.

evaluated and it was discovered that using LED street lighting would provide a means for the NHDOT to significantly reduce the cost for the street lighting on the bridge. The leadership of NHDOT Commissioner Chris Clement was responsible for the decision to use LED technology for the street lighting which also significantly reduces light pol-lution, and his support of the il-lumination project was critical for that project. According to Keith Cota, NHDOT fully sup-ports this community effort and action which is anticipated to benefit the business community and the public at-large on both sides of the river.”

The issue of light pollu-tion was brought to the Sub-Committee’s attention by two local amateur astronomers and Dark Sky advocates, David Speltz and Bob Gillette. Both requested that there be discus-sion with NHDOT regarding changing the illumination from an “up lighting” option to one that “down lights” the towers, thereby reducing unnecessary light pollution into the sky. The NHDOT has agreed to this im-provement to the original pro-posal. An additional obstacle that arose was the question of ex-actly how a local citizen’s group would be allowed to transfer funds to a federal project. This is where the Portsmouth Historical Society (Maryellen Burke and Richard Candee) and the City of Portsmouth stepped up to offer their support to facilitate the fund-raising (and tax-deductible) effort and allow for the transfer of the funds to the NHDOT.

The Illumination Sub-Committee is now ready to begin the first phase of the fund-raising effort to illuminate the

new Memorial Bridge by an-nouncing this week a Pledge-Raising Campaign with the goal of reaching pledges totaling $60,000. Once this goal has been reached, the Illumination Sub-Committee will begin to collect the tax-deductible donations that are pledged, and continue to fundraise until the initial goal of $80,000 is reached.

“We are confident that our financial goal will be achieved, not only because we are con-vinced of the great value to the seacoast that this project repre-sents, but also because during the past two months dozens of individuals and groups have al-ready indicated that they want to be part of our fundraising effort. In fact as of today, our group al-

ready has in hand pledges total-ing $8000. We ask the residents of the Seacoast to join with us in this once in a lifetime oppor-tunity to help beautify this new bridge and create a new Seacoast icon which will certainly out-live many of us here today,” said Somssich.

Residents and businesses can join the Memorial Bridge Illumination Pledge-Raising effort by contacting Rose Eppard at [email protected]. For general information about the project, contact Peter Somssich, 34 Swett Ave. Portsmouth, NH 03801, 603-436-5221. 29, The Music Hall’s Writers in the Loft series welcomes wine expert and novelist Jay McIn-erney. The Wall Street Journal wine columnist, and author of such generation-defining books as “Bright Lights, Big City,” comes to town with “The Juice: Vinous Veritas,” his newest col-lection of wine essays.

The guest moderator for the evening will be Jude Blake, a local wine connoisseur and edu-cator who is a close friend, neigh-bor, and supporter of The Music Hall.

“We are so very fortunate to have these ‘writers’ programs in our own downtown arts center. In addition to the discussion and question and answer session with Jay McInerney about “The Juice,” I’m particularly excited to be working with The Music Hall on wines for the evening. We’ll have some of the author’s wine selections available for tasting and discussion. Now that is what I call bringing a book totally to life!” Blake said.

The 7 pm event will be held at The Music Hall Loft located at 131 Congress Street, in Ports-mouth.

DUMPSTERS FOR RENT

Dear Computer Lady,Thank you for all your help-

ful advice. I referred others to you. How can I change the default set-tings of Microsoft Word such as line spacing and space after paragraph so that when I open a document it is already set to my personal style? Thanks, Anne

Dear Anne,Thank you for spreading

the word about this newsletter, and my website. I really appreci-ate your support! It is actually quite easy to set up your default settings in Word. Here is how:

In Word 2003 follow these directions.

1. Open Microsoft Word to a blank document. I like to press Ctrl + A (the shortcut for select all) but in a new, blank document it is not really necessary.

2. Click on “Format” and then “Font” in the menu bar. This will open a window for changing the font type, style and size.

3. Change the font size and any other changes you might

Can I remove Windows Live mail without losing my roadrunner account or do I need Windows Live Mail in order for my roadrunner account to work?Anne

2. Under “Programs” click on “Uninstall a Program.”

3. Find “Windows Live Es-sentials” in the list of installed programs.

4. Click once on “Windows Live Essentials” to select it, then click the “Uninstall/Change” button in the toolbar at the top of the window.

5. Click on “Remove one or more Windows Live Programs.”

6. Click to put a check mark in front of “Mail” and then click the “Uninstall” button at the bottom of the dialog box.Elizabeth

Dear Computer Lady,I really enjoy your informa-

tion but I would like to file info onto my data stick by date and not alphabetically. Can you help me? Mary K

Dear Mary,I can help you with your

computer question! It is not a matter of storing

your files differently, you only need to change the way you are viewing them.

Here is how to do that.

1. Insert your data stick (also known as a flash drive or thumb drive) into your computer and when the dialog box comes up, click “Open Folder To View Files.”

2. This will bring up Win-dows Explorer.

3. In the Windows Explorer window, there is a row across the top that contains the heading for each column.

4. Since your files are now being sorted alphabetically by name, you should see a small tri-angle in the “Name” section.

5. Click on the heading that says, “Date Modified” and that triangle will move to the “Date Modified” section and your files will be sorted by the date the files were last modified.

6. If you click again on “Date Modified” it will reverse the order the files are sorted.

Using this method, you can sort your files by any of the col-umns listed. This is helpful if you want to find the largest or small-est files in a folder. Elizabeth

sponse To: How to Safely Clean A Trackball Comment: I have cleaned regular mice and track-balls with both of these solutions and they work well. On newer mice a little windex on a paper towel can clean the window over the laser, Logitech still makes trackballs and they are optical but a dry q-tip will clean the buildup off of the standoffs that hold the ball in the right position.

~ Ask The Computer Lady ~Dear Computer Lady,

I am baffled by a cell format issue in Excel (ver. 2003). For some unknown reason, when I enter a person’s email address in a cell, Excel automatically formats the entry with a “Mailto” format or tag. So when I click on the cell, my email client opens up with a blank email message.

How do I change this to a plain vanilla data entry? Jack

Dear Jack,Just right click on either the

individual cell with the email ad-dress, or highlight and right click on the entire column with email addresses.

In the context menu that ap-pears, you will see “Remove Hy-perlinks.”

Just click on “Remove Hy-perlinks” to convert the email ad-dresses back to plain text. Elizabeth

Healthcare and its CEO, Dr. Michael O’Connell, are pleased to announce the promotion of Dawn Daigle to practice man-ager. This development follows the recent merging of Clinic on the Commons, formerly of Rochester, with Salmon Falls Family Healthcare in Somer-sworth. Daigle had been prac-tice manager at Clinic on the Commons for over 20 years and brings with her a vast amount of experience from which she can draw to manage this much larger organization, complete with 10 well-rounded providers and a knowledgeable support staff.

Daigle is eager to take on this new challenge. “I’ve had the pleasure of working with this progressive healthcare organization for the past two and a half years, and I’m very impressed with its growth and professionalism. I’m honored to have been offered this new posi-tion and looking forward to the challenges that lie ahead,” she said.

O’Connell, who also owns and operates PainCare and several other medical practices scattered throughout New Hampshire, made the decision to promote Daigle based on several factors. “We

have been blessed with such ex-tensive growth of our family of companies that the organization now requires a “systems coordi-nator.” The former practice man-ager Briana Foy has been tapped for that challenging role, and Dawn with her wealth of family practice experience, her drive for excellence, and warm friendly demeanor is felt perfect for the new practice manager of Salmon Falls Family Healthcare,” he said. The systems coordinator role will enhance and standard-ize the best training and commu-nication methods, policies and procedures between all practices and office locations within the

organization, with the goal of increasing overall efficiency and service quality.

Understanding Protein’s Role

Fitness afficionados have grown increasingly reliant on pro-tein to supplement their workouts. Protein can help in the building of lean muscle and, when eaten after a workout, can help aid in muscle recovery.

While protein is a valuable component of a healthy diet, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention note that many adults already get enough protein to meet their needs. That’s because protein can be found in so many different types of foods, including meat, poultry, fish, dry beans and peas; eggs, nuts and seeds; and milk and milk products. Some vegetables and fruits even provide some protein, though it’s far less than other foods.

When examining protein as part of a person’s diet, the sources of protein are labeled according to how many essential amino acids they provide. Essential amino acids are those that the body cannot make on its own, so a per-son’s diet must provide them.

A complete protein source is one that provides all of those es-sential amino acids. These sourc-es are often referred to as high quality proteins. Animal-based foods such as meat, poultry, fish, eggs, and cheese are considered complete protein sources.

An incomplete protein source is one that’s low in one or more of the essential amino

acids. However, two or more incomplete protein sources can be combined to meet the body’s needs for essential amino acids. Though it was once believed that these complementary protein sources must be eaten during the same meal, more recent stud-ies have shown they are just as effective as long as they’re con-sumed within the same day.

Ward Kent of Eliot, Maine, and acclaimed artist Denise Brown, of Portsmouth, have collaborat-ed on a children’s book with a local theme. They will be doing their first book signing at Tug-boat Alley in Portsmouth, on Saturday, November 24, from 1 to 4 pm.

“Tugboat River Rescue!” is the true story of the near cap-size of the tugboat Miss Stacy while working on the demoli-tion of the Memorial Bridge here in Portsmouth. The Miss Stacy was dramatically rescued by the local tugboat the Euge-nia Moran, and her skilled cap-tain and crew. The story of the “Tugboat River Rescue!” is told in simple but dramatic prose by Kent and beautifully illus-trated with full color artwork by Brown. Kent, who witnessed the incident, also includes actual photos of the rescue in the back of the book.

“It was pure chance that I happened to be there,” says Kent. “I had just come from a meeting in an office building

PORTSMOUTH –Open your heart for the

holidays with Generic Theater’s production of “Little Gem,” a bittersweet comedy set in con-temporary Dublin, Ireland, play-ing November 30 - December 9 at The Players’ Ring, 105 Marcy Street, in Portsmouth. Show times are 8 pm Fridays and Sat-urdays, 7 pm Sunday December 2, closing with a 2 pm matinee Sunday December 9.

This first play by Elaine Murphy won the Carol Tambor Best of Edinburgh Award at the 2009 Edinburgh Fringe Festival in Scotland.

Spicy language marks the interconnected monologues of “Little Gem” over a year in the lives of grandmother, mother, and daughter. Granddaugh-ter Amber (Ally Foy of East Kingston NH) must find her footing – more quickly than she likes – as events whirl her from a free-wheeling teen to a coura-geous adult. Her mother, Lor-raine (Laurie Torosian of At-kinson), has trouble adjusting to happiness after many years of putting herself last. Kay, Lor-raine’s mother (Peggi McCarthy

near the bridge and decided to go down and take some photos of the demolition work. When I arrived, the Miss Stacy had just heeled over and the rescue un-folded from there. I thought the incident would be a great story and would draw positive atten-tion to the important work done by our tugboats and the Coast Guard.”

Kent, who owns Kent Cre-ative, a creative services agency providing writing, design, mar-keting and PR out of Dover, and Brown, who owns Ad-Cetera Graphics of Portsmouth, have frequently collaborated on proj-ects, but this is their first book. Kent is an established writer whose work has regularly ap-peared in magazines such as Taste of the Seacoast, Northeast Flavor, Coastal Home, Univer-

sity of New Hampshire Maga-zine, Bay State Builder, Gran-ite State Builder and others. She also writes for Guideposts books, Chicken Soup, and is the author of “Mainely Kids: A Guide to Family Fun in South-ern Maine.” Brown, an accom-plished graphic designer, is the author/illustrator of “Wind: Wild Horse Rescue,” “Abena-ki: The Indian Pony,” and the popular children’s coloring book series, “Ted Gets Out.” She is well known around the region for her watercolors of Seacoast scenes, architectural renderings, horse illustrations, and her work on The Trail of Painted Ponies series of collect-ible horse figurines.

“Tugboat River Rescue,” published by Raccoon Studioss, will be sold at local children’s stores, book stores and gift shops, and will be available through Amazon.com as well as through www.tugboatres-cue.com.

The softcover book is 31 pages, fully illustrated, and includes fascinating tugboat facts.
