Like a bull at the gate Groovin the Moo is ready to charge and rumble: the gates are open so jump in the saddle for a mighty ride.GTM is a travelling musical event like no other in Australia: we set up our shows in regional cities, not the big smoke (OK, we are going to Canberra this year). A one day explosion of carnival and cavorting under the sun, clouds, moon, in front of a chunky outdoor double stage, and in the biggest dance tent since Sheik Yerbouti, as the sun goes down on life as usual. When you come through the gate you will see everyone has come out of the wood-work to play. Wherever we go the crowd is part of the show, and proudly welcome all tribes to come together: rockers, ravers, rappers, young people, old people, bushies, city people – Groovin the Moo people. The kids, the cats, the boys, the ladies, all one motley throng letting the rest of life loose. The crowd is big enough to go bang, but not so large there is no room to wiggle. All the revellers and punters have an infectious groove going, and the fever catches. A tectonic tonic for the system you will not forget in a hurry.Come down and swing your sneakers to a new groove and a rapper’s delight. Catch some rays in a daze to a jangle guitar and a golden melody.Fist the night to the flash and clash of a metal lightning bolt.In 2010, GTM presents a sonic smorgasbord for your delight, rock, rap, dance, metal, hardcore, pop, headlined by Silverchair, Empire of the Sun, Vampire Weekend, Grinspoon, and Tegan and Sara.GTM has brought the sounds and fun of a single day touring music show out of the cities trucking into the heart of Australia, and is ready to rock the boat in Bendigo (VIC) May 1, Townsville (QLD) May 2, Maitland (NSW) May 8, Canberra (ACT) May 9 and Bunbury (WA) May 15. Acts have come to play from all over this country, and a few besides from Europe, North and even South America. An exotic rockit to the Milky Way out there. The 2010 annual Groovin the Moo is ready to roll - come jump in the fun.The GTM Team

AT SOME POINT during the 2003/ 2004 period, statistician Stephen Halpin and good mate, teacher Rod ney Little, were brainstorming, looking for a new challenge. “Over a bottle or two of red wine, we had a few ideas about what we could do, to do something different and Rod came up with the idea of a regional music festival,” explains Halpin. “Rod has a farm at Gloucester. We tho-ught that would be a great place for a music festival, which it was. We had the Screaming Jets, Killing Heidi and Evermore.” “Evermore before they were huge,” Little pipes in with a smile.

The two are hardly your typical festival promoters and besides Halpin’s involvement in a band or two and their mutual love of music, they really had no background in the industry. But that first event went ahead and even though it ran at a loss, they “caught the bug” and really haven’t looked back, as it’s a full-time occupation these days. The initial venue was moved to Maitland and other locations were launched in Townsville and Albury (now Bend-igo). With the addition of Canberra and Bunbury this year (ironically classifying the nation’s capital as a regional city), Groovin’ The Moo (GTM) is undoubtedly the nation’s premier regional festival.

The two promoters compliment each other well and though there’s no set outline of their roles, they each have their own strengths. Halpin has, probably, the better mu-sic knowledge, so takes the main duties regarding planning and book-ing the line-up, while Little has a self-proclaimed love of organising, so naturally has the infrastructure under wraps. The two are, however,

bound in their aim to bring “some-thing of city quality to the country,” as Little puts it.

In achieving that goal they’re not only serving deprived music fans, but also the towns themselves. “They’ve all recognised that the festival brings a lot to the town, so they’ve embraced it, which means that we can return that hospitality by staying,” Little continues. “Most of the event is sourced locally in terms of infrastructure and admin, so it generates a lot of revenue for the businesses.” But it’s hardly for those catchments only. “It brings a lot of the city’s young people out; a chance for them to get away,” Halpin identifies. Little adds, “People make a weekend of it.”

Surely, with this year’s line-up (and tickets under $100, one of the few festivals left to do so) there’s going to be punters coming from all over. Silverchair’s return to the live scene is big news, while Empire Of The Sun have become one of the nation’s most sought-after live acts. AMP winner Lisa Mitchell’s quickly becoming a darling of the scene and hugely underrated internationals Spoon are about to explode. But – and with quality all the way through the ranks – international ‘it’ band Vampire Weekend are the festival’s biggest ever coup.

“To be honest when we first put in our bids, we thought we had prob-ably a ten percent chance we would get it,” says Halpin. “But it kept go-ing and going and the difficulty was we’d kind of reserved a spot for them because they hadn’t said ‘no’. And if they’d said no later in the piece, who were we gonna get?” GTM is indeed an attractive prospect for touring

internationals, with no restrictions placed on the bands it means they can play all the capital cities whilst tapping into a regional audience they may not have before.

One of the other defining aspects of the festival is the most obvious – a less than traditional name, Groovin’ The Moo is nonsensical but unforget-table. “I remember being at work, I had about ten or 12 names and I was

thinking about rocking this, doing this and Groovin’ The Moo was one of those names that popped into my head.” Gloucester is a dairy farming community and Rockin’ The Cow didn’t quite stick as well, Halpin ad-mits. And though he can’t really stand it anymore, everyone’s got their own variation of the name, further evi-dence of the community spirit.

With the five dates this year, GTM has really evolved from a boutique festival into the big league and it continues to sell out its dates – while Maitland and Bendigo put up the signs early, it’s a fair bet the rest will do the same, even if it’s on the day itself. The focus is on this year, but while further expansion plans aren’t on the horizon, you wouldn’t discount it. “Well we always say no,” say Halpin, laughing. “But it just de-pends; it’s grown organically. We haven’t forced things that didn’t feel right. But at this stage, we’ll just con-centrate on this five.”

With each community giving each location a distinct feel (all have a ca-pacity of 15,000 – not massive, but enough to give it a sense of being ‘big’), the spiritual home in Maitland is the wild child of the run. Bendigo’s a little more experienced and Towns-ville patrons are still finding their fes-tival feet. “The first year, during the afternoon everyone was there and kind of excited, but they didn’t know what to do,” Halpin says. “There was a buzz around but they weren’t sure what they should be doing.” But they’ve since learnt how to make the most of the day and you can expect that trend right around the nation. It really is true, that out of little things, the best things grow.

THE HEARTS OF OPERATIONSAustralians love their festivals and regional excursion Groovin’ The Moo is one of the most beloved. Promoters Stephen Halpin and Rodney Little are to thank for that, writes Scott Fitzsimons.

“I remember being at work, I had about ten or 12 names and I was thinking about ‘rocking this’, ‘doing this’ and ‘Groovin’ The Moo’ was one of those names that popped into my head.” – Stephen Halpin

A group that needs no introduction? The Australian alternative rock band par excellence, and the most decorated act in the history of the ARIAs (21 gongs) returns to Groovin the Moo after blowing the show away in 2007. Hallelujah, the second coming is upon us. Get ready to behold the light.

With five #1 albums – Frogstomp, Freak Show, Neon Ballroom, Diorama and Young Modern, and a host of potent songs including Straight Lines, Without You, Luv Your Life, The Greatest View, Miss You Love, Emotion Sickness, Ana’s Song, Cemetary, Abuse Me, Freak, Pure Massacre, myriad tours of the great southern land, Europe, America and the rest of the globe, even slaying the 250,000 monster Rock in Rio, our young gents are now veteran masters of the game.

The early sonic grunge salvo has evolved, sharpened and matured, expanding the sound into prog-rock territory laced with orchestral manoeuvres, without losing their touch, or sight of their origins. So steel yourself to get in the ring with the pound for pound most menacing deft juggernaut of Australian alternative music.

SILVERCHAIR PLAY THE TRIPLE J STAGE AT 9:25PM

SILVERCHAIR

Sounding like an African rhythm section locked up with some college wunderkind in a basement studio in Manhattan, New York City, who together turned musical captivity into a grand jamboree. Kid you not – they describe themselves as “Upper West Side Soweto”.

These young strutters have only been together since 2006, but their unique sound and twisted talents created a buzz which they managed to record and release to applause, the crowd went wild, and has ever since. Quirky strangeness comes all warm and fuzzy like the happiest hangover breakfast your new best friend is about to make you, in bed.

Vampire Weekend is named after a student film made by singer/guitarist Ezra Koenig. Key player Rostam Batmanglij writes scores for movies. They have the soundtrack to a good time up their sleeves and will shuffle the card into the deck on a regular basis. Their first album (self titled) debuted in the top 20 in the US and UK. Their second album Contra came out this year and made #1 in the US and #2 in Australia. Singles Oxford Comma, Horchata and Cousins are in our veins.

Their debut album has belted the charts world wide and racked up four ARIA awards for 2009 (Album, Single, Group and Pop Release) and strid-ing direct onto the main stage at festivals such as Parklife. Walking on a Dream indeed. Freshly minted genius comes along only so often.

Luke Steele (from Sleepy Jackson) is Empire of the Sun, and has turned a moon age day dream into a series of beautiful lush party anthems and delirious mental horizons that will brush your lips like an elec-tro bliss static kiss. We Are the People and Standing on the Shore will break over us like a wave of glittering platinum mist.

Emprie’s pop zeppelin is filled with summer guitars and disco darkness, stitched together into the cutest party Frankenstein you never did see. It’s like Steele has picked up the Bee Gees in a sequined sea plane, and flown off into the sunset of the future of the future. Come fly.

EMPIRE OF THE SUN

Can you hear the thunder? Brace yourself for the rolling tempest of drums, bass, guitar and vox called Grinspoon.

Making their first impact with Guide to Better Living the blasts keep on coming with LPs Easy, New Deten-tion, Thrills Kills and Sunday Pills, and Alibis and Other Lies. The Aussie hardcore flying fist of fury is ready to vent some steam and storm back with their elegant sonic demolition derby for their second instalment with GTM.

Touring on their new Opus Magnus Six To Midnight, of which singer Phil Jameson laughingly says “The lyrical themes of desperation, loneliness, paranoia, self-loathing - it’s really uplifting!”, this band is primed and timed to explode.

Notorious for the live grace of their calculated musical warlust, Grinspoon have an impact indeed: prepare to be beaten with the metal hammer.

TEGAN AND SARA

MIAMI HORROR

The new wave pop train is building steam and head-ing direct for the tunnel of love, via a few heartbreak hairpins and could-have-been hillocks.

Canadian siblings Tegan and Sara Quin front a taught, tight, hooky, pacey, catchy and simply good modern music machine adept at unravelling the conundrums of the heart, and then messing it all back up again, in the three minute zipping zebra that is each of their songs like Back In Your Head and Hell.

2009’s Sainthood is their sixth album, and follows favourites The Con and So Jealous, since their debut LP in 1999. They have been around the world a few times, and the world around them a few more. They have played on the David Letterman show twice.Sibling rivalry and sister love collide and ignite in their drum and bass led popsicle rocket, as the girls escape the permafrost of home and punch the fun button until they clock the game. Come play.

TEGAN AND SARA PLAY THE TRIPLE J STAGE AT 5:50PM

A disco-house throbbing mash-up of electro super jive chucked in a blender with three raw eggs, a bull’s nut, ginseng and a funky mushroom, turned onto interstellar overdrive, blasted through a black hole and sweated out via every pore of your skin as you dance to the soundtrack of the Miami Horror movie where everyone’s happy endings converge in a big cherry-red bow tie.

What more do you want?

The brain-child of diabolical dude disco scientist Benjamin Plant, Miami Horror became a live and living dance band who have careen around the Aussie festi-val and club circuit like a demented spinning top, that never stops, and doesn’t gather moss, mutating into a hybrid genre affair built on the original disco beast that staggered out of Mr Plant’s bedroom.

Fave Sometimes made the Triple J Hottest 100, and Miami Horror have already smashed the Big Day Out, with Lily Allen and Phoenix. New single Don’t Be On With Her is throbbing all over the net. Their first album is being hatched as we speak.

LISA MITCHELL GTM PREVIEWThe time is right to catch up with the twenty year old singing enchantress Lisa Mitchell, who will make her GTM debut this year, after an unconventional rise to fame on the back of sheer talent, beguiling charm and beautiful songs. For all the heady atten-tion and professionalism, her music still sounds like a young busker with one hand finger-picking a guitar, the other touching the sky, and the day-dreaming of a wistful yet jovial heart. See Clean White Love, Animals or Coin Laundry for starters.

Bold as brass Lisa Mitchell started performing live from home via MySpace, and found an audience of thousands. She then bit the old school bullet, and went on tour with the likes of Ben Lee and Evermore, then selling out her own national tour, then moving on to snack on festivals like The Big Day Out, Falls Festival, Sunset Sounds and Southbound. Her debut EP Said One to the Other followed and made #1 on the iTunes Top Album chart. After a spell in London she came back Down Under to live in Melbourne, and has since released her first album in 2009, aptly called Wonder.

So come wander with Lisa Mitchell down a memory lane towards tomorrow never knows, but always goes, and set sail in her Neapolitan Dreams on a technicolour sea. – GTM

IDOL CHIT CHATWith the brilliantly enjoyable album Wonder, Lisa Mitchell scored herself the Australian Music Prize (AMP), the nation’s most prestigious music prize. She talks to Michael Smith and Scott Fitzsimons about the album, the award and the future.

In four short years Mitchell has gone from a viewer favourite in the 2006 Australian Idol to a remarkably mature and distinctive singer/songwriter who at 20, has already performed at Glastonbury and become the first female to win the AMP. “Glastonbury was freaking amazing,” the still surprised Mitchell admits. “I still can’t believe I went. It seems just way too ridiculous for me to actually go there let alone play.”

But things didn’t stop there for Mitchell, and she went on to record and release the album, Wonder, which, she admits, did have it’s moments of protest against international touring. “A lot of the tracks on the album are just completely about, ‘I want to go home’. Being away from home was heart wrenching, so there are some missing home tracks, a ‘what the fuck am I doing in London by my-self?’ track. So yeah, it seemed to spark a lot of songs, being on the other side of the world.”

Remarkably, she’s never really had to deal with the Idol dogma (just look where that year’s other contestants Damien Leith and Jessica Mauboy are now), shedding it before the album, or even her two EPs to an extent, received public attention. “It’s not been so much a real conscious effort or move away from anything, it’s more

a continuation of me doing what I love and advancing on it.” It worked. The album went platinum and she’s the talk of the industry with the aforementioned AMP under he belt.

“You know, I was stoked to even be nominated let alone win,” she said just after being told the news, down the line from the UK. “So I’m a bit shocked and unprepared that I’ve actually won. But I’m very humbled and ex-cited and very happy, very happy… it’s very humbling to have the record recognised formally by the AMP.”

On top of the acclaim, the award comes with a $30,000 prize purse which means we’ll be hearing plenty more from Mitchell’s corner – and that’s not just from on stage at this year’s festival (she urges people not to throw money on stage during her hit Coin Laundry as has happened before. Unless it’s notes of course) – she intends to put the money towards the next album, for which writing is well underway. Although, with the excitement around her camp at the moment, you’d expect that her label is going to be throwing ample recourses her way.

Spoon frontman Britt Daniel can exhale: his band’s latest record, Transference, is the masterpiece he’d second-guessed for months, writes Brooke Salisbury. SPOON GTM PREVIEW

These merchants of angular dark pop spring from Austin, Texas and are ready to muster and corral all stray Moo-sters with their barbed and beguiling array of left-field musical whips and lassoes like My Little Japanese Cigarette Case and Written in Reverse.

Based around co-founders Britt Daniel (vocals/guitars) and Jim Eno (drums), Spoon came to light with 2005’s Gimmie Fiction, Ga Ga Ga Ga Ga which took a sort of indie goes Motown direction, which worked so well it debuted in the top 10 on Billboard and made #1 on the indie album chart in the Good Ole US of A. The brawny and brash LP Transfer-ence came out this year and made an even bigger splash: debut #4 on Billboard and top of the Rock Album chart in the US, and has already been a Triple J album of the week.

The songs are odysseys, adrift, pushed, pulled, compelled towards parts unknown by a band of knowing fellow travellers.

With drums that roll and click and a bass that walks and talks across your lobes and feet, Spoon are hypnotists of sound and music about to knock on the door of your delirium at GTM 2010 and lay you well to rest. –GTM

that photo and I realized, we had to have it,” says Daniel. “And it’s a William Eggleston original, so let me tell you, we paid for it,” he says, laughing.

In conversation, Daniel is funny if mindful of his word choices. “Generally I’m glad to put a record to bed. The writing process is extremely draining: it goes from thoughtful to egocentric to vulnerable to colourful. Plus, I’ll generally isolate myself and head to a town where I don’t know anyone and rent a house; get a little carried away and dark. We’ve been around a while now and I feel that there’s a constant pressure to do different, and I don’t want to make the same record twice so I do put pressure on myself to extend.”

While Daniel no longer considers his band ‘underrated’ or ‘criminally overlooked’ he’s little concerned with cornering the pop market. “I like where we’re at and I like what we’re doing, and you know, I think we had the chance to jump to major-label status [with Elektra records] and that proved of little fortune in the larger scheme of things,” he explains of the band’s ill fated experience with U.S. major. “I’ll always remember driving up to a show in Denver on the Kill The Moonlight tour and there was a huge line, and last time we’d been there we’d played to less than half a room. I said, ‘Something’s going on here,’ and our tour manager Ben [Dickey] said ‘Something’s going on alright. You’re going to be huge.’ And you know what, I’m not sure if he was right at all, but we’ve continued to make music that we’re genuinely proud of and maintained a fan base while making vastly different music, and really, we won’t be stopping anytime soon.”

SPOON PLAY THE MYSPACE STAGE AT 5PM

EXPERIENCEFreudianSPOON’S

Britt Daniel is sick of thinking about Transference. It’s not that the Spoon frontman doesn’t like his new record; on the contrary in fact: Daniel loves it. It’s in the months between labouring endlessly and often solitarily over a record and its subsequent release that you lose your sense of audience and musical perspective, he says. “Being cautious is too draining,” begins Daniel, “And with music, I’m always cautious. I’m always on the lookout for doing something lame, and when you’re producing your own record it gets hard to tell what is and what is not cool. I’m always second guessing myself.”

Finally, Daniel can relax. Since its limited release in January the band’s seventh longplayer has received a stunning reception, not before time either for a band lauded in the United States but criminally unknown in Australia. Labeled notably skinnier than previous records, Daniel says he tried to make Transference “an uglier record, though on its completion I’m not sure I did that. Every album we make is like an unconscious reaction to the one before. Think of [2007’s] Ga Ga Ga Ga Ga and strip it back six times to where the songs were first written. Some of them have one or two chords and some of them are actually demos. The idea was to just go with the energy and sometimes even get the full band in the studio at once, no tracking. Fumbles and friendly mistakes.”

Its title carries to a rawness of its own. Freud’s popular theory of trans-ference states that a nerve can be struck when someone says or does something that reminds you of your past. This creates an emotional reaction that transfers your emotional past and your psychological needs into your current reality. An emotional time warp, if you will, somewhat heavier than the string of ‘Ga’s that last escaped Daniel. “Transference is the concept that we replicate our childhood relationships continuously throughout our adult life. Different people come and go but the same patterns surround us, and we let the same relationships take the same forms and weights,” he says. “On top of that, I really love the word. I think it’s incredibly beautiful and has a fluidity of its own accord. The whole concept is something that really resonated with me while writing this album and when approached by the theory it’s something that probably resonates for a lot of people,” he confides.

Indeed the record’s cover bares an image thick with ambiguity. A child sits in a decadent chair. Drapes fall heavily around him: it’s as if he’s in the middle of a party and yet there’s no sign of movement. He could be anywhere or nowhere; he’s the star and the outcast and as the central feature of the photograph, bears total vacancy within the frame. “I was at an exhibition in New York about a year before we started recording [Transference] when I first saw the image and sent myself a text message saying ‘Next album cover: boy in chair’. About a year later I started looking for artwork and I found the text and thought ‘that’s ridiculous, I don’t want a child as an album cover: I don’t like kids.’ Then we were mixing the record and I picked up a book at Howie Weinberg [mastering engineer’s] house and on the last page I saw

13

Page 14: GTM MAG - BENIDGO

“Some of the songs kind of seem like something we’ve been threatening to do, or had it in us to do or wanted to do since we kind of formed the group, back when we were young, but we never really had the courage, or the skill, to pull it off in a way that would be acceptable,” says vocalist/guitarist Declan Melia. He’s talking about British India’s third and latest album Avalanche, a state of intent for the Melbourne group that they’re ready to assert themselves on the national scene beyond their already sizeable fanbase.

The courage he references was, “more a songwriting kind of thing. Being very un-self conscious while we’re writing and just doing whatever we feel and just communicating well. It’s a kind of confirmation of positive elements, things that went well, things that seemed to gel, Nic [Wilson, guitar] and I especially, which is a pretty rare thing.

“Having gotten a bit more used to big audiences and festival stages, I think that does inform the songwriting, so maybe some of these songs are a bit more suited to large audiences. Even when we were recording and writing them, I think we were excited about playing them in a festival crowd and as it becomes closer and closer, I think it rings even more truth.”

After two relatively successful albums, Avalanche has that third album desperation about it – the feel that if they’re going to step things up, it’s got to be now. Melia agrees, to an extent, to the make or break mentality. “So was Guillotine, so was Thieves and so will the next one be,” he says, referencing the band’s two previous records. “With attention spans as short as they are these days, you can’t make a crappy record and expect to get away with it. You can’t make a record that’s not as good as the one you did before. The audiences are too fickle and their memories are too short to forgive your bad record. It’s not really make, it’s more sustain or break.”

Suited to the festival in more ways than one, not only are they festival-built, they’ve also indulged in a little regional touring of their own. “I think that with the record industry in a such a decline, bands have to look at other ways to kind of make money and touring and certainly regional touring is going to be a rich part of that… I would predict, you heard it here first folks, that bands will start doing these things again.”

BRITISH INDIA GTM PREVIEWGTM guarantees you anthems galore, verses to hook, and choruses to catch from the regiments of British India.Another salvo in the Melbourne rock onslaught, the quartet have exploded with a sonic boom ever since LP Guillotine slid down on the neck of band fans across this golden continent and servered all conections with songs Tie Up My Hands, Run the Red Light, Black and White Radio, I Said I’m Sorry and God Is Dead all certified classic anthems.

They came off the top ropes in 2008 with LP Thieves which blew the charts apart (debut #5 ARIA, #1 AIR chart), and the fans went down in sweet pain and flames. Then the pile-driver that is new album Avalanches came out this year, spearheaded by single Vanilla. Just watch out lest this mob land a knock-out blow and snatch the show from the jaws of the mighty Moo.

BAG RAIDERSThe two-headed dancer floor monster that is the Bag Raiders are coming to town, and they are promising to bring the fat back-beat and vocoders with them. Shooting stars will tumble down into the GTM dance marquee and land glistening in your hair, as your feet split the atom in a boogaloo breakdown.

Over the last few years these gentlemen (Chris Stracey and Jack Glass) have been lobbing into raves, clubs and concerts hither and thither, making the world spin that little bit faster. Live jive action and a few crafty remixes started the whispers about los Bag Raiders, touring with MSTRKRFT, Cut Copy and Muscles, then two smash singles (Turbo Love and Shooting Stars) was enough to teleport them around the world (USA, Brazil, Colombia, Japan) and back to OZ again, breaking into the festival scene in 2009 with aplomb. Their youtube clip of Fun Punch has racked up a mere 700,000 views.

Turn on the excitement machines, then turn them up.

BAG RAIDERS PLAY THE MOOLIN ROUGE DANCE TENT AT 6:40PM

KISSCHASYShaking, struttin’, shimmying and all shimmering Kisschasy are hot out of the blocks and have their pop lips all over the heart and guitar strings of Australia.

Boasting strident anthems and subtle songs with powerful twists, the band have been propelled past all the other speed boats and docked into a glistening rock marina with a strict door policy: fun times.

Four albums have stacked up like a pyramid of power pop punch out: United Paper People, Hymns for the Nonbeliever, Too B or Not Too B, and in 2009, Seizures and have tucked singles such as Do-do’s & Whoa-Oh’s, Spray on Pants, Opinions Won’t Keep You Warm at Night, Turnaround under their cowboy belts. They took that to the main stage at Splendor in the Grass last year and opened the floodgates upon the masses.

Generation Why was the first single off Seizures, dedicated to those who always complain. You will not. Wonder why the hell not, and find the catchy band that keeps catching on: Kisschasy.

Neon Love are a talented bunch of guys from Ballarat, some of whom have already drummed up a bit of buzz as part of Unearthed High winners Howl. Being in just one of those bands would be a respectable feat for young’uns from rural Victoria, so ‘Holiday’ comes as a welcome and impressive surprise.

The vocal inflections and arrange-ment (including the shouted refrain at the end) heavily recall Tokyo Police Club, but it’s not direct cribbing/hero worship because the song beneath it is pretty darn catchy. in itself You know, it’s jaunty indie rock and it’s fun so more power to these guys. They’ll probably go far. Much further than Ballarat. – Matt Hickey (whothehell.net)

Q & A with triple j Unearthed

TELL US ABOUT YOUR MUSIC – HOW DID YOU DEVELOP YOUR SOUND? Well originally we formed cause we kind of bonded over the same music but as we grew a little older everyone spanned off and developed different tastes. Our sound has really been a progression of the last few years, recording our EP helped to get us on the right track, but over the last few months we’ve really knuckled down and tried to create something a bit more cohesive. I couldn’t really tell you how our sound was developed cause we’re still very much in the process.

WHAT CAN THE GROOVIN THE MOO AUDIENCE EXPECT FROM YOUR LIVE SHOW? I don’t even know what to expect yet. I know Nipuna and Jack (Singers/Guitarists) have some ideas so I suppose you’ll just have to wait and see. I’m guessing it’ll be a lot of energy and maybe some kind of theatrics. One thing that I don’t like doing is just walking on stage and playing each song as they were recorded, start to finish, and walk off. Something will happen.

WHO ARE YOU MOST LOOKING FORWARD TO SEEING AT GROOVIN THE MOO? Definitely Spoon. They’re one band I’ve followed for a very long time and I hear they are killer live. Also it’ll be interesting to see Empire Of The Sun, just to watch how Luke Steele and his band pull off the album live.

WHAT’S COMING UP IN THE FUTURE? A new EP. We’re kind of home producing a lot of it this time around, spending more time on sounds and melodies rather than getting a 36 hours to quickly squeeze out 5 tracks. It should be a lot different to our last release.

AUSTRALIAN MUSIC IS? Closely tied but hugely diverse.

APOLLOBegan mid 2009 when two kids decided to constructively channel their boredom in the form of melodic sound. After a short period of time another two gentlemen were thrown in the mix, unearthing a distinct sound from which Apollo were born. Remaining hidden for the best part of their first year as a band, the Apollo team steadily brewed a unique mix of dance, post-punk & pop, as well as shooting the odd hoop or two. 2010 saw Apollo finally break out onto the local scene, turning a few heads with some demo tracks and a high energy live show. Now with some experience under their belt and some ambition in their heads Apollo have a long and winding path in front of them, one they are eager to begin.

Having just completed an onslaught of frantic appearances at festivals such as Stereoson-ic, Field Day, Queenscliff Music Festival etc and east coast tours with good friends and all round nice guys Yacht Club DJs and DZ, the six friends showed no signs of stopping for a breather as they slapped the P-plates back on the tour van and head out for the Groovin The Moo Festival in Bendigo and their next national support tour…but we’re not going to tell you about that just yet…stay tuned!

FUNKOARSRockin’ hip hop goes classic disco. Sounding like a posse of dudes who gate-crashed a Boogie Nights party and did not escape unscathed, or without introducing themselves to Roller Girl, a few times, get lubed and low down.

Part of the Certified Wise Crew along with the Hilltop Hoods, the Funkoars bring on a sleazy sparkle bling to the scene of the crime and make off with the stash tucked in their snake skin underpants.

Throwing down the glam gauntlet from a hot pink Cadillac to all other contenders for the heavy weight Aussie hip hop belt, our men from Adelaide are mean to please.

Spreading their bat wings, the Funkoars cross-genre single Black Sally with NZ psych-lick masters Human Instinct is one funky groover that is way too slinky to hang onto, but too fun to stop trying. Check it out now.

Together Mr. Trials, Uncle Sesta, Sketchy Hons and DJ Reflux are the Funkoars.

Quote Mr. Trials: “Funkoar is the dreg of society. It is the funnel in which all morals and conscious are drained into the river Styx”. He said it.

The man who can play 6 turntables like some kind of funk octopus, and the tightest hard-rock rhythm section this side of the planet in a showdown at the GTM corral?

Demented turntable wizard from Montreal, Canada, aka Kid Koala (Eric San), legendary DJ moving on mythic for hatching a villenous plan with co-pilot Dynamite D (Dylan J. Frombach) to put the metal back into the DJ groove. Originally cooked up for a movie soundtrack, the mad scientist’s experiment they dubbed The Slew was left in the laboratory when the movies’ funding collapsed and never got made. Stranded with the prototype of a musical war machine, they hooked up with the former Wolfmother rhythm section (Chris Ross and Myles Heskett) and unleashed the juggernaut on an unsuspecting planet, in the form of album 100%, singles It’s All Over, You Turn Me Cold and a tour de force.

A drum kit, bass guitar, keys, six turntables and a truck load of amps are coming this way for the biggest hip hop versus rock fight since, ever. This is a much heavier, dirtier and darker creature than Walk this Way. Arse-busting beats, breaks and chops. A brutal brontosaurus just burst out of a slimy cosmic egg and is lumbering this way. Run for cover!

ILLYHip hop with an electro soulful soundtrack, shuffling beats and words on the deal, and music which fits into cracks in the mind. Illy walks the talk and talks the walk, never on the run from the bottom line. Hard at it. No hard attitude. Truth be told because he is bold. We are proud to present a wandering minstrel of words, who won’t feel like a stranger or danger.

This man can speak for himself and a bunch of others too, taking the heat off the times. This is a rap stallion fresh out of the Obese Records stable, Illy is moving up the flank and might yet be the leader of the pack.

A man of many talents, Illy is also a writer and a poet, which shows all over his debut album Long Short Story, and single Pictures (Triple J Hottest 100), lyrical and tough, agile and direct, sumptuous and minimal, and sure to make a sweet splash in the pool. Bombs away.

MUPH AND PLUTONICMuch loved Melbourne hip-hop duo deliver will-not-quit thoughtful sounds free of macho positions. These street tigers slink on down an alley of hard reflections on life, drinking from every murky puddle along the way. Bards of Aussie hip hop splice jazz cuts with bit beats, samples, scratching and vocal imagery like fuzzy snapshots of the times and life of now.

Muph (MC) is a pioneer and survivor, fabled for his humble and honest approach to his stories, his rhyme like an ancient craft, no boasting required as the quali-ty of the yarn speaks for itself and the listener, opening the doors for all comers to take a seat on his bouncing bus with a window on this passing life. See LP ...And Then Tomorrow Came and the new album they have cooked up and are ready to serve this year.

Plutonic (producer) produces the soundscape on the journey - samples and original instruments create a lush surround syndrome, the neighbourhood in which his mate Muph is at home to operate.

Backed live by DJ Bonez, we have another mighty string in the bow of Australian hip-hop. And for anyone who questions whether local rap has sophistication, the answer. Time to feel the noise, and have a look in the mirror.

SPACE INVADAS GTM PREVIEWSee those lights flashing in the night sky? A flying saucer descends, lands and opens its doors to reveal an intergalactic party palace waiting for you to call it home sweet home. The Space Invadas have just appeared on planet earth’s radar screens – the fission of the joint and renowned talents of Australia’s groove prince Katalyst and Britain’s soul maestro Steve Spacek.

Their first collaboration ‘How Bout Us’ led to the recording of ‘Soul-Fi’ in Sydney (their debut LP and their own music style) which has spawned the radio hits ‘Original’ and ‘Life’.

Their mix of future soul and cruisy hip-hop channels the legacy of US 70’s legends Curtis Mayfield and Marvin Gaye and points towards a dazzling supernova of groovy delight. Backed by an inter-stellar live band the Space Invadas have already made cosmic waves at club shows and festivals across Australia. The smoothest Funkasaurus Rex in the known universe is about to take you for a merry ride. – GTM

AJAXGTM presents a glam disco acid house puppy primed to chomp on your funky bones.

One man Melbourne show is an eager damn-bustin’ beaver battling the gizmos with his dexterity against destiny to feed your hunger to get beyond with his space age energy snack attack packs. Has remixed Midnight Juggernaughts, New Young Pony Club and Miami Horror. Has tracks on Ministry of Sound and One Love compilations. And landed at Future Music festival like a UFO.

We just have to quote his own bio here: “People laughed, some cried . . .His naked ambition had made him a peep show. Soon the dollar coins started to pile, he climbed them and to his surprise all he could see was clay and dust and glazes in every direction. He was speaking in tongues, a green foam frothed soon from his nostrils and he perspired . . . “.

Take a jungle pop with an optimistic hop along the trail and swing along the vine divine to a tree house party shebang in a canopy tee-pee: there you find Jonathan Boulet. Signed to Modular records, one album of the triple j week (under his name) and single Community Service Announcement is humming in the air and the streets.

Imagine an ecstatic jaunt towards the faraway which is in sight but out of reach, until our tyro Boulet marches along and pulls the goods out of his baseball cap. Le scruffy Sydney mutt man has a jolly way with melody and has promised to bring along his magic wand, pudding and all-purpose bag of tricks. His music is up, insightful, pop, elaborate, simple, elegant, confusing and fun, and happy.

The man has filled a bottle with Sydney sunshine and is ready to crack the cap at GTM. Cups will run over.

GUARANTEED TO BLOW YOUR BLOW YOUR MIND MIND

Mysterious prophets of diabolical enlightenment. Talons and tentacles of the beast. A giant spiders web of sound you can wear.

The Only have stalked the dance floor in stealth mode, but now are stepping into the open out of a cloud of vibrating energy.

This indie electro group have spent 2009 producing remixes for the likes of Tyken, Armand Van Helden and Killa Queenz, debuting direct on Ministry of Sound and One Love releases, as well as making waves with elaborate live appearances in clubs, and rabid attacks at festivals. Creating a potent stew out of remixes, redits and originals, this is a feast for the titans. And they never put on the same banquet twice.

Who are these masked men? Introducing The Only.

THE ONLY PLAY THE MOOLIN ROUGE DANCE TENT AT 4:50PM

Precocious maestros of the mash-up, this Ballarat duo turned the Karova Lounge in their home town into a battlestar bunker from which to launch their party blitzkrieg, or maybe it was more like a street party version of a jumping-Castle Greyskull. There are few survivors to confirm the details. They do have the power.

These land locked mariners of fortune cut and drop as fast as you can dance, DJ kleptomaniacs moving so quick you can only catch a blur of the scene of the crime and the good time that ensues and brews on a night running so hot right now, phew.

Landlubbers adrift in a sea of carnival seek mermaids to share good times which seem to never ever stop, nice boys gone pirate mix so many melo-dies you know so tight they become one new sound, all their very own.The lads have moved on up to make late-night festival slots into their rum-pus room of joy. It seems the Yacht Club DJs cannot be stopped. You will see. And if you can’t beat them?

KillaQueenz are Kween G and Belizean Bombshell, hailing from Uganda (Africa) and Belize (Caribbean) respectively, who call on musical heritage and bring it to play in their high energy vision of party hip hop, taking the local scene by the scruff and dragging it off on a new angle.

The Sydney duo originally met while performing in separate acts at the Olym-pics, the two have fused and forged their music into high performance steel made to chop and dice. Their debut album Sistarhood and crunching live shows have garnered them a reputation and a following across the country.

Freddie Mercury will have to move aside, because these lassies don’t take too many prisoners in their quest to be the best and lay down some street dancing domination, and blow those who dare to doubt clean out of the water. - --A -- Z G EXPERIENCEOF THE

ALPHA The alpha punter will try to assert his/her dominance on the dancefloor/grass/dirt, it’s your job, nay your duty, to get up alongside them and challenge for the title.

BANDS You might say that this is why you’re here. Silverchair, Grinspoon, Vampire Weekend, Spoon, Lisa Mitchell, etc. Don’t miss a damn thing.

CAMERA Like the phone (or part of it), this is a vital tool for the day, particularly if you wish to capture those memories you may forget, or actually, never want shown publicly. It all comes out on Facebook in the “GTM 2010!!!” album.

DRESS-UPS For some reason people in disguise make more friends. Be gone social tentativeness!

EVENING Ain’t no city skyline to blind the sunset and stars at this one. Quite a romantic prospect, really.

FIRST AID If you’ve broken your foot in the moshpit and your mate is projectile vomiting, this tent is sweeter than Lisa Mitchell herself. (That said, we don’t advise breaking or throwing up anything, as Lisa would disapprove.)

GROOVE It’s all about the Groove and while there aren’t actually prizes, sometimes a hi-five from a random passer-by is all the inspiration a killer groove-move needs.

HATS More than merely protection from two weeks of peeling, hats are a trademark and must-have accessory. Really want to see cow-heads.

ILLEGALS There’s certain things that just aren’t sporting at a festival. Check the website before you’re stopped at the door. Awkward and embarrassing.

JERKS Remember folks, chivalry was invented for the music festival. Line-cutters, crowd-shovers, space-takers and failed crowd-surfers are about as appreciated as a loss of reception.

KIDS We’re an all-welcoming festival and these guys are the future. DO NOT get in the way of a 15 year old and their Silverchair. You’ve been warned.

LOVE There is never any shortage of love floating, love for bands, love for friends… love for strangers. “Yeeeah, that’s the power of love, duh duh, do dee…”

MOBILE PHONE The Swiss-army knife of festivals. Camera, friend locater, “promised I’d call her during A Punk” device and, during Grinspoon’s Chemical Heart, a lighter to be waved.

NEW BFFLS Be it a bond over a song, clothing, food, or your poison of choice, say hello to the best friends you’ll never see again.

ODOUR What is the result of thousands of people dancing in the same area (not to mention the nice combo of alcohol and cigarettes)? That’d be Bodysweat™ by GTM, as directed by Luke Steele.

PORTALOOS Your worst enemy and your best friend, epitomised in one small plastic hut.

QUEUES 15,000 people can’t all grab a hotdog at the same time. Ain’t gonna stop us from trying though!

ROAD TRIP Is their anything better? Good mates, air conditioning on the blink, no petrol money, a dodgy caravan park, a radio that only picks up foreign news stations… this is the life.

SUNSHINE On a rainy day, makes my soul, drip, drip, drip away. Well then, let’s hope for no rain, ‘cause we’re super keen for Space Invadas’ soul-session.

TICKET If you’re the designated ticket-keeper, for the love of cows forget everything else but them. Friends will lend you clothes/money. Friends will disown you if you forget tickets.

UNDERWEAR A festival experience wouldn’t be complete without catching a glimpse of some underwear action. For reasons, both known and unknown, shirts and sometimes pants come off during the day.

VIP There is a VIP bar at the festival called Udder Mayhem. Use this information to your own discretion.

WATER At risk of sounding like your mum (she’s not coming?), make sure you keep hydrated so you don’t pass out before your favourite band. “Oh my God, were you there the time when…” “Well, yes and no…”

X Print map. Draw ‘X’. At end of day meet your friends at scribbled ‘X’.

YELL At Groovin’ The Moo, everyone will hear you scream. As you will everyone else

ZONE You may find yourself or others are in an unnatural state we like to call ‘the GTM zone’. Watching live music and dancing is a ‘special’ form of self-expression and one should be embraced. We’re talking to you, Townsville!

In 2010 Cattleyard Promotions posted a callout for aspiring artists and designers under the age of 25 to submit proposals for a new T-Shirt design for the GTM Merch range. Hundreds of entries were submitted from the sublime to the absurd. After much deliberation judges Cameron Bird (Architecture in Helsinki), Lori Damiano and Brian Taranto (Love Police) plucked their winner, Matt Hobson out of his bedroom in Fairfield Victoria. Matt describes his entry: “There are few times one can truly be free and ‘release their inner animal’. Festivals, especially GTM is a perfect example of when you can. This inspired me in creating this image as the colorful cow is released from the man’s head as it twists open. The text on the side has been stylized to emphasize the fluidness of the cow’s release and the vibrancy of the festival.”

Matt was the lucky recipient of a copy of Adobe Creative Suite, VIP tickets to a GTM event plus a GTM Merch pack.

You can purchase a limited edition copy of Matt’s “Inner Animal” Tee at the Merch tent at any GTM event, and if you see Matt in the crowd, ask him to bring out his Inner Animal – or at least get some tips on colouring-in!

Slim, you’ve travelled the universe in a never ending quest to find extra - ordinary excellence, true love, and the perfect doner kebab. What brings you to Australia?Well sir, it’s the Groovin’ the Moo event. The arse-kickingest fest in the world. I’m shining me boots and me belt buckle for a month of craziness dancing under the stars.

You shot to an unheralded level of D-Grade fame as the biggest head in Hollywood – what projects are you working on now? Damn straight! I got my first bit-part as an extra in The Good, the Big-Head and the Ugly – but Clint was envious of my cranium capacity. After a series of failed projects (Dances with Wolfmother and Illy the Kid) I won critical acclaim in the artsy fartsy Coen Brothers Film No Country for Foam Men. I am about to film the TV adpation of Best Little Whorehouse in Townsville.

How would you explain your other role as Intergalactic Rodeo clown to the UN?It’s a role only three folks on this here planet are capable of filling. Unfortunately Tony Abbot is busy with marathons, and Tom Selleck is in talks for Three Men and Baby Part 3, so it came down to me. Let me tell y’all – the UN knows how to partay rodeo style.

Vampire Weekend are headlining Groovin’ the Moo – who’s blood would you like to suck vampire style?Julia Gillard. This cowboy has a thing for redheads.

You’re in a spaceship with Germaine Greer, Jermaine Jackson and a German Shepard… there’s only enough Spacefood sticks for 3 of you. Who gets put out to pasture?I’ll be the one heading out for pasture, riding the dog, with Jackson 5 in my ear and a copy of ‘The Female Eunuch’ in my hand in case some aliens threaten my womanhood.

Coming from the wild, wild west, do you have any advice for city folks heading out to the event?Leave your attitude at the saloon doors, forget the city stress, burn your Ed Hardy muscle tees, make friends with your neighbours, share your wet weather poncho, and if you find a lost looking cowboy – please point me in the direction of the drinks tent.

If you could perform a karaoke song with Daniel Johns of Silverchair, what would be your chosen tune?Anything by the late great Billy Ray Cyrus. He is dead isn’t he? Something about an Achey Breaky Heart Attack…

Who would win in a kick-arse cowboy style shoot out – Tegan, Sara or you?Well those young cowgirls can rock a event, but I don’t know about their skills in a shootout. I reckon I’d win, then we’d all go compare asymmetrical haircuts.

The promoters of Groovin’ the Moo were tossing up between Lindsay Lohan, the Olsen twins and yourself as official mascots. What did you do to seal the deal?We had an eating competition – the Olsen twins can’t handle their KFC, and Lindsay will be busy promoting her new movies, albums, fashion lines, rehab programs.

Luke Steele of ‘Empire of the Sun’ lists you as his fashion muse. Your thoughts?Luke should try to do something original… His look is so mainstream and predictable. We had a falling out in 1998 after he stole my tencel overalls – things got weird, stuff was said. I’m hoping to patch things up over the course of Groovin’. [mumbles] But if he comes out on stage wearing a pink diamonte studded shirt – there will be trouble!

Your legendary krump-linedance is a youtube sensation. Will it be making an appearance at the event, and are you working on any other mashed up dance moves? The Paso-doble-hokey-pokey is something I’ve been working on with ex-Prime Minister John Howard. His work in developing locking and popping into mainstream dance isn’t well known outside the industry, but he is pivotal in the dance community worldwide.

Big thanks to Bunbury and Canberra for letting us bring GTM to your fine cities. It’s always a nervous time coming to a new venue, but the support from everyone has been amazing. Thanks to everyone in Bendigo, Maitland and Townsville where we again sold out in record time. We really appreciate your support.

To get GTM around the country takes a massive effort and would not happen without the incredible work of the wonderful GTM team. So thanks to everyone involved. Also a big thanks to our presenting partners, media partners, all the councils, police, transport, safety organizations, contractors and volunteers.

So please look after yourself and your mates. Be considerate to those around you, and most of all HAVE A GREAT DAY!Steven Halpin, Cattleyard Promotions
