RMIT University has been teachingFoundation Studies and Pathwayprograms for many years and ourteachers are experienced in working withinternational students. Our teachers havea good understanding of the needs ofyoung people studying in another countryand away from family and friends.

RMIT College

RMIT University International College(RMIT College) has been established toprovide international students with thesupport and care needed to help themgain the most from their universityeducation before graduating to a career in their chosen profession. We offerfoundation studies, diploma andassociate degree programs that aredesigned to provide international studentswith the education they require to enterand succeed in bachelor degreeprograms.

The Foundation Studies program has five streams which are tailored to bestprepare student for further study in thefield of their choice. They are: Art, Designand Architecture; Business/IT; Media andCommunication; Property andConstruction Management; and Science,Engineering and Technology. We knowstudents want to do well in their chosenfield and our foundation studies streamsensure that they are prepared for the nextphase of their education.

The Diploma of Business provides anintroduction to the study of business at a tertiary level but in a small class sizeenvironment, and articulates into thesecond year of most business degrees at RMIT.

The associate degrees are two-yearprograms that offer the option ofgraduating with a professionally-recognised qualification or continuing into the third year of a range of IT, designand engineering degrees.

RMIT College students have access to vocational guidance. Individualappointments are organised for students

to discuss academic program and careerchoices. Students are kept informedabout available programs andprerequisites.

Students in RMIT College also take part ina variety of academic and social activitiesthat assist them to make new friends andadjust to their new environment, includingorientation getaways, sports competitions,gallery visits, debating competitions,excursions and a graduate exhibition.

RMIT University

All students are issued with an RMITstudent card and have access to alluniversity services. Students study on the RMIT city campus in the centre of Melbourne. Students familiarisethemselves with RMIT University whilststudying in their pathway program, andthey can access the vibrant studentlifestyle in a safe, clean and secure city.Because of its central location, studentscan easily reach RMIT whether they live in the city centre or in one of Melbourne's suburbs.

Extensive library services and facilities and computer resource centres, offeringthe use of personal computers with emailand Internet access, are available to allstudents.

Where do our students come from?

RMIT College is specifically forinternational students. Students comefrom many different countries within thefollowing regions: Asia, Africa, theAmericas, Europe, and the Middle East.

The greatest number of students comefrom Indonesia, Malaysia, Hong Kong and China. There are also students fromcountries such as Botswana, Colombia,India, Japan, Kenya, Korea, Macau,Mauritius, Oman, Pakistan, Russia, SaudiArabia, Taiwan, Thailand, Turkey, UK,United Arab Emirates, USA and Vietnamas well as many other countries.

Foundation studies can be started once students finish secondary school in their home country and often after completing Year 11 with good results. This allows students to start their higher education studies earlier.

In all intakes there are five courses(subjects) studied in each semester, exceptfor the August intake which has fourcourses in each semester.

Not all foundation studies streams areoffered at every intake.

Students applying for June and Augustintakes must have good academic resultsand demonstrate an ability to take theaccelerated program.

English Language Prerequisites

All foundation studies students mustprovide evidence of English languageproficiency. For February, June, August and September intakes, this must be equal to or more than:

• IELTS 5.5 with no band less than 5, or• TOEFL 530/197 (TWE 3.5+)/iBT 71

(minimum 17 in all sections), or• GCE O levels English with C, or• ELICOS upper intermediate or

above from an RMIT recognisedprovider, or

• Malaysian SPM English with B, or• HKCEE English with 3, or• All India (10 + 1) English 60%, or• Kenyan KCSE English C.

For the November intake, it must be equalto, or more than:

• IELTS 5.0 with no band less than 4.5, or• TOEFL 500/172 (TWE 3.0)/iBT 61,

(minimum 15 in all sections), or

• GCE O levels English with D, or• ELICOS intermediate or above from

an RMIT recognised provider, or• Malaysian SPM English with C5, or• HKCEE English with 2.

Students who do not meet theserequirements must successfully completean intensive English language program atUpper Intermediate level with REW (seepage 32) before beginning foundationstudies.

Assessment

Continuous assessment by tests,assignments, projects, class attendanceand final examinations contribute to thefinal score for each course (subject) in all the foundation studies streams. To graduate from this program, studentsmust pass a total of eight coursesincluding English (usually comprising partA and B of four courses).

ScholarshipsEach year, RMIT University awards 12 scholarships, valued at AU$5,000 each, to foundation studies students. The scholarships are awarded on the basis of academic merit and personal achievement and are open to studentsfrom all countries.

Who can help me if I have a problem?Almost all students find they need some form ofassistance with study, practical or personal problemsduring their time at RMIT. There are several options for obtaining assistance should you need it. These are outlined below.

Your stream coordinator and teachersEach stream has a program coordinator who isresponsible for supporting and assisting students.Your coordinator might also be one of your teachersbut this is not always the case. However, yourcoordinator will meet regularly with all of yourteachers.

The program coordinator is generally the first personyou should go to if you need assistance with eitheryour academic program or any other aspect of yourlife in Australia. Your coordinator will be able to referyou to the right place if you need more specialisedhelp.

Your teachers are also willing to help and you shouldnot be afraid to ask them for assistance, especially inrelation to the course (subject) they are teaching.RMIT teachers and coordinators are experienced inworking with international students and can generallyunderstand the kinds of difficulties you may be facing.

Established in 1968, RMIT EnglishWorldwide (REW) is RMIT University’sEnglish language centre. We offer highquality English language services forsocial, business or academic purposes inAustralia and internationally. Students canstudy RMIT English Worldwide programsat the main centre in Melbourne, Australiaor at an offshore partner centre.

The REW Melbourne centre is located inthe heart of Melbourne opposite the maincampus of RMIT University and is one ofAustralia’s leading English languagecentres. Our custom designed coursematerials help students meet the learningoutcomes for the level and type ofprogram they are studying. The courses(subjects) are taught by highly qualifiedteachers with a combination of textbook,visual materials and Computer-AssistedLanguage Learning (CALL). REW studentshave access to excellent learning facilities,including state-of-the-art multimedialaboratories, an Independent LearningCentre, free email and Internet and access to RMIT University facilities.

English language requirements

All programs at RMIT University are taught in English, therefore each programhas a minimum English language entryrequirement. The academic and Englishrequirements are included in thedescription of each portfolio/school study area.

RMIT English Worldwide provides a direct pathway for students who have not yet achieved the English languageprerequisite to enter RMIT programs.Students can complete the English forAcademic Purposes (EAP) programenabling them to meet the Englishlanguage requirements of their selectedprogram. The EAP program assistsstudents to develop key skills in criticalthinking, independent learning and activeparticipation in an academic environment.

The EAP program is taught across threelevels at RMIT English Worldwide–UpperIntermediate, Advanced 1 and Advanced 2.

Students may be eligible to enter one ofthese levels after sitting the RMIT EnglishWorldwide Placement Test or on the basis of recent IELTS or TOEFLscores. Some students may be requiredto complete one or more General Englishcourses (subjects) first.

Program description: Students who havecompleted the equivalent of Year 10 intheir own countries may complete theVictorian Certificate of Education (VCE) atYear 11 level before proceeding to RMITCollege, or continuing on to VCE Year 12.The Victorian Certificate of Education (Year 11 and 12) is the Victorian StateGovernment secondary school certificatewhich is recognised throughout Australiaand internationally as a university entry qualification.

The full certificate is studied over two yearsbut many students choose to study Year11 VCE before transferring to the RMITCollege program. Students who havealready completed a Year 11 equivalent intheir own country (or elsewhere) but whoseresults are not good enough for entry intothe Foundation Studies program mayproceed to after one semester of Year 11VCE if they achieve a minimum of a Bgrade in English and B or C grades inother areas.

Students who enter Year 11 VCE in Julyand intend to enter Year 12 the followingyear need to have a minimum of 3 passesin a previous Year 11 or equivalent.

Students study with local and internationalstudents, which increases language skillsand cultural experiences. The wide rangeof VCE subjects provides a goodopportunity for students to discover theirstrengths and interests, and therefore tomake wise choices for further study.

University Pathways Cup 21 July 07For the first time, students from a number ofMelbourne’s pathway programs gathered fora football contest. Four teams (from RMIT,Taylors, La Trobe and Monash College)answered the challenge.At RMIT, we sourced a fantastic coach (FrankSiliato, husband of Annitta in Business) andtraining started on Sundays in May. ThroughJune and July, on some bitterly cold days,Frank and his assistant, Joe, made thesestudents really believe they could win thechampionship.

And they did!The final game of the one day round-robin contest was against

Monash College, and came to an unsatisfying O-O draw. Then, in the fading light, Amin, our goalie,stopped the Monash penalty kicks, while ours were successful.

We took away the trophy (for thisyear) and medallions were proudly
