PACKING GUIDELINESFROM THE PROS
PACK LIKE A PRO!
GP Movers provide the options of partial or full packing and unpacking services.
Some of our clients choose to save on time and assign their moving crew to complete the task of packing, while others prefer the control of packing and the resulted lower cost. Either way you choose, proper packing is essential for the successful transfer of your possessions. If you choose to do some or all of your packing, be sure to browse our “Pack Like a Pro” guidelines and know-hows.
So you prefer to do your own packing
SMALL APPLIANCESMake sure cords are wrapped and secured. Wrap each small appliance in paper and place in a box. You may wish to use towels and linens as additional padding. Empty steam devices of water. Remove all batteries.
SILVERAir will cause sliver to tarnish and friction will cause surface scratches. Enclose each piece in clean paper or plastic.
MAJOR APPLIANCESRequire preparation in advance. Appliances must be disconnected, cleaned and drained, with cords secured. Our sales representative can assist you in arranging for third party services, if needed.
CLOTHINGUse moving boxes or save space by using dresser drawers to move casual clothing. The use of wardrobe boxes for hanging clothing will make setting up your closets easier and reduce wrinkles.
BOOKSPack flat or with spine facing the bottom of the box. Do not pack spine up.
DELICATE ITEMSWrap items such as figurines in tissue, then in paper for additional protection. Use plenty of cushioning and mark the box with a “FRAGILE” sticker. For particularly valuable or fragile items, we recommend bubble wrap.
RUGSWe suggest rugs be cleaned while paying special notice to ensure they are completely dry before the move. For proper handling, please allow your rugs to be packed by our professional crew.
DRAPERIESLine a large box with clean paper and gently fold in your draperies, to prevent wrinkling.
PACKING PREPARATION
• Contact your GP Movers agent for boxes and packing materials.
• Have at fingertips: thick permanent marker, packing paper, moving boxes of assorted sizes and packing tape.
• Designate and label a “Parts Box” for hardware from dismantled furniture and similar items. Bag each set of parts and mark what item they belong to. Leave the box open on the day of your scheduled relocation, in case the moving crew has additional items to disassemble.
• Keep in mind: Packed boxes should not weigh more than 50 pounds each.
• Pack heavy items (such as books) in small boxes, lightweight items (such as linens) in large boxes.
• Avoid overfilling but use crumpled paper for a firm fit that prevents shifting and/or crushing. Pad the bottom and sides of boxes with paper, then pad the top prior to sealing.
• Build the box in layers, with heaviest items at the bottom and lightest on the top.
• Pack seldom used items and out-of-season items first, then infrequently used items, leaving items in daily use last.
• Discard, sell or give away items you no longer need, rather than paying to relocate them.
• Remove items from plastic storage containers and repack them in boxes.

PACK LIKE A PRO!So You Prefer To Do Your Own Packing
ELECTRONICSWhenever available, Pack computers and other delicate electronics in original boxes. Be sure to disconnect all wires before the movers arrive.
CDS, DVDS RECORDS, TAPESPlace in originalPackaging whenever possible. If you don’t have record jackets, wrap in tissue to prevent scratching, then wrap with paper. Stand CDs and records on edge, layering with crumpled paper. Support stacks with cardboard or similar item. Mark as “FRAGILE”.
EXERCISEEQUIPMENTMake sure to check manufacturer’s guide-lines. If disassembling is required, do so cautiously and designate a well-padded box for loose parts. Be sure to fold or take apart oversized pieces whenever recommended by manufacturer.
CHINA & GLASSWAREUse a dish pack box for proper protection. Wrap each item separately. Protect each piece with paper (not newspaper which can permanently stain). Using several sheets of packing paper, start from one corner and wrap several layers around, tucking ends over. Nest cups and small bowls. Stand plates, saucers and platters on edge. Use generous padding on all sides and label “FRAGILE”.
LINENSProtect your linens in large plastic bags, then place in a carton lined with clean paper. Heirloom and valuable linens should be additionally protected with tissue paper.
PLANTSLive plants require special handling. Please ask for our special brochure about relocating plants. Artificial plants and flowers should be packed in a separate box. Wrap each stem carefully in tissue. Make sure the box is very sturdy to prevent crushing. Label box “FRAGILE” and “THIS SIDE UP”.
PHOTOGRAPHSPack your photographs, family videos, slides and negatives in a box of their own. Do not place them by alongside other household items. If possible, carry irreplaceable items yourself.
LAMPSRemove light bulbs and lamp harp. Wrap separately. Cushion the lamp base well. More than one lamp may be boxedin a carton. Wrap lamp shades in tissue paper or linens. Line a box with clean paper padding, at least two inches on all sides. Place shades in a separate box. You may nest shades as long as they do not touch. We highly recommend professional packing for glass.
SPECIAL ATTENTION NEEDEDNo explosives, or ammunition of any kind!
GLASS & MARBLE TABLE TOPSThese items require special protection and therefore ought to be professionally packed. Please contact our estimators or representatives.
DELICATE & BULKY ITEMSAntiques and other items may require special handling. Items like pool tables, plasma TVs and grandfather clocks may require third party services. Our estimators and repre-sentatives can advise you on the best way to protect these possessions.
CLOSE, SEAL & LABEL BOXES• Leave boxes containing items on your High Value
Inventory and firearms unsealed. On the day of your relocation, our foreman will inspect the boxes and secure them in your presence with GP Movers Security + PlusTM seals.
• Seal all other boxes securely with packing tape. Do not use masking or other types of tape as they may not adhere and hold properly.
• Label all boxes with your name, the basic contents and the designated room/ space in your new location. This will assist our foreman in completing an accurate inventory and placing the items correctly in your new location.
• Use special stickers (available from your GP Movers representative) to identify boxes containing fragile items and items to load last and unload first.
• Leave your Parts Box and tools needed to reassemble items to load last and unload first.
PROTECT YOUR BELONGINGS THE PROFESSIONAL WAY
Heavy-duty reinforced boxes in a variety of sizes, packing tape and paper are available from your GP Movers representative. Please select and use the proper moving boxes and materials. Once you have determined the items to relocate, we will gladly advise you on containers which will best accommodate your needs.
Remember that improper packing materials may prove costly in the long run for several reasons:
• Used boxes may be deformed, compromised and lack the heavy weight reinforcement of household goods boxes.
• Boxes in odd sizes and shapes make loading difficult and less efficient. In addition, they may not fit well together, causing other boxes to shift during transit. In extreme cases, insufficient boxes may be refused for transportation if they jeopardize the safe transportation of the contents of the load.
• It is important to use genuine packing tape. Other types of tape (such as masking tape) do not adhere as strongly and do not offer the same strength. Newspaper may be used for padding and wrapping some items. However, items such as porcelain and china should be wrapped in tissue or special moving paper to prevent ink transfer.
