CASTILLO DE SANTA BÁRBARA SAINT BARBARA’S CASTLE

Ubicado en la cima del monte Benacantil. Fue gracias al asentamiento del pueblo árabe cuando se construyó la fortaleza, debido a su gran valor estratégico y defensivo. Este monumento ha contemplado toda la historia de la ciudad. Muestra de ello son los tres recintos diferenciados que posee: “la Torreta”, la más antigua de la fortaleza y donde se halla la Torre del Homenaje; el recinto intermedio se construyó en el siglo XVI y está compuesto por el Salón Felipe II, el antiguo Cuerpo de la Tropa y el Baluarte de la Reina entre otros; y la tercera y última zona es la inferior, del siglo XVIII, donde se encuentra el Revellín del Bon Repós.

Puedes acceder desde el Postiguet, por medio del ascensor excavado en la roca, o por la carretera que discurre en la ladera norte del monte Benacantil. Además, decir también que si lo observas desde la fachada marítima podrás distinguir en el monte una fi gura que asemeja un rostro humano de perfi l: la particular “cara del moro”. Se trata se una maravilla con la que la naturaleza nos ha dotado, recortada en el cielo, la cual tenemos como símbolo de la ciudad.

It’s situated on the top of Benacantil Mountain. The fortress was built during the Arab period because of its strategic and defensive advantages. This monument has been a witness to all the happenings of the city. It can be proved with the different zones it has. One of the zones is “la Torreta”, the oldest zone of the fortress and where the keep used to be. The middle zone was built in the 16th century and it is divided in the Philip II Room, the old barracks in the wide enceinte and behind it the ruins of Saint Barbara’s hermitage, the Queen’s Bastion, etc. The third and last zone is the lowest one, from the 18th century where you can fi nd the “Revellín del Bon Repós”. On the other hand it is also a wonderful place to spend some time with friends and enjoy the magical views of the sea and the city itself. The growth of Alicante can be actually seen, a full history lesson.

There are two ways to get to the castle: opposite Postiguet’s beach is the elevator carved into stone, or through the road that winds through the north foothill of Benacantil mountain. It is also ought to be mentioned that if you look from the sea front to the castle you will see in the mountain a silhouette of a human face: the famous “Cara del Moro”, a wonder of nature outlined in the sky that is the symbol of our city.

CONCATEDRAL DE SAN NICOLÁSSAINT NICHOLAS CONCATHEDRAL

Uno de los edifi cios más simbólicos del casco antiguo. De estilo renacentista herreriano, hablamos de una iglesia de cruz latina con los brazos poco acusados y capillas laterales comunicadas. Ya en su interior destacan el claustro del siglo XV con dos puertas barrocas, el altar, la Capilla de la Comunión del siglo XVIII y la cúpula azul de 45 metros de altura. Además, la decoración interior data de la primera mitad del siglo XVIII y es un claro ejemplo del estilo ilusionista español.

It is one of the most symbolic buildings of the old part of the town. This Herrerian cathedral from the Spanish renaissance has a Latin cross ground plan with short arms and connected chapels on the sides. Once you are in you will see the great cloister from the 15th century with two baroque portals, the altar, the 18th century Chapel of Communion and the 150 feet high blue dome. Furthermore the decoration is dated at the fi rst half of the 18th century and is a good example of the Spanish Illusionist style.

BASÍLICA DE SANTA MARÍASAINT MARY BASILICA

Del siglo XIV, este templo gótico se alzó sobre una mezquita islámica. Está formada por una sola nave, sin crucero, con capillas laterales sitas entre los contrafuertes, con un total de seis crujías. Dispone de una serie de salas, que se han ido adosando a lo largo de su historia, de entre las cuales cabe destacar el altar mayor rococó del siglo XVIII, la valiosa pila bautismal del siglo XVI y el órgano barroco valenciano de 1653. Ya a partir de principios de los noventa del siglo pasado, se han realizado numerosas restauraciones. Posee un importantísimo fondo documental y artístico, cuya pieza más antigua es un incunable del siglo XIII.

Dated at the 14th century this gothic temple was built above an Islamic mosque. It has a one nave ground plan, no crossing, with chapels on its sides between drums, and six spandrels. It has a series of rooms added as time passed, among them it is ought to mention the 18th century Rococo altar, the precious 16th century baptismal font and the baroque Valencian organ dated at 1653. Since the beginning of 1990s several restorations have been made. It has lots of important documents and art pieces, the oldest is a 13th century incunabulae.

AYUNTAMIENTO DE ALICANTEALICANTE CITY HALL

Palacio barroco del siglo XVIII construido sobre la antigua Casa de la Ciudad. Reconocible por su fachada de cincuenta metros, por las dos torres situadas a

ambos extremos y por ser una obra arquitectónica singular, en él podremos encontrar el sitio de referencia desde el que se mide la altitud sobre el nivel del mar en cualquier lugar de España. Este lugar, denominado “Cota Cero”, se encuentra en el primer peldaño de la escalera principal.

18th century baroque palace built above the old Casa de la Ciudad. It’s well known because of its 165 feet high façade, the two towers on both sides of it and being a unique building where we can fi nd the point

of reference that is used to calculate the neight for any point of Spain. That point is called Cota Cero and is located on the fi rst rung of the main stairs.

MONASTERIO DE LA SANTA FAZSAINT FAZ MONASTERY

A 5 km. del centro urbano, es la iglesia de peregrinación donde se custodia la reliquia de la Santa Faz, por la cual acuden miles de alicantinos cada año para compartir su fe. El edifi cio es de estilo barroco y posee una bóveda en forma de pirámide. Allí se encuentra un pliegue del lienzo con el que la Verónica enjugó el rostro de Cristo y que fue traída en peregrinación desde el Vaticano a Alicante en 1489.

This church, situated just 3 miles away from the town centre, is the pilgrimage church where the Saint Faz relic is kept and that is why every year thousands of people go from Alicante to and share their faith. The building has a pyramid shaped dome and is part of the baroque style. There is kept a part of the fabric with which Veronica cleaned Jesus face and that was brought to Alicante from the Vatican in 1489 as part of a pilgrimage.

DIPUTACIÓN PROVINCIAL COUNTY COUNCIL BUILDING

Fruto del proyecto realizado por el arquitecto Juan Vidal Ramos, la sede de la Diputación Provincial de Alicante es un palacio de estilo neoclásico de infl uencia

italiana, infl uenciado también por el estilo barroco de los palacios borbónicos de Madrid. En su interior podrás deleitarte viendo el llamado Jardín de las Celebridades, donde verás monumentos clásicos en honor a personalidades alicantinas.

It is the result of the project by the architect Juan Vidal Ramos, the County Council Building of Alicante is a neoclassical palace infl uenced by Italian neoclassical style and the baroque style of the Bourbonic palaces

in Madrid. Once you are in you will enjoy the so called Garden of Celebrities where you will fi nd classical monuments honouring Alicante’s celebrities.

TEATRO PRINCIPALPRINCIPAL THEATER

Es el recinto teatral por excelencia de Alicante. Construido entre 1846 y 1848 a partir del estilo neoclásico, su pórtico se elaboró sobre seis columnas dóricas, con un frontón triangular. El interior es un exponente del típico teatro a la italiana, con tres zonas diferentes: el vestíbulo, la cávea con planta en forma de herradura y el escenario. En él se representan durante la temporada de septiembre a junio toda clase de obras de teatro, lírica, ballet y conciertos.

It’s the theatre par excellence of Alicante. It was built between 1846 and 1848 under a neoclassical style. The portal was made above six Doric columns with a pediment. The inside is a classical example of an Italian style theatre, with three different zones: the orchestra, the semi-circle cavea, and the scenario. From September to July is used for concerts, plays, ballets, etc.

PARQUE DE LA ERETAPARK OF THE ERETA

Está situado en la ladera del Monte Benacantil, a los pies del Castillo de Santa Bárbara. Desde él se puede disfrutar de unas vistas impresionantes de toda la cuidad, y ofrece la posibilidad de realizar una ruta encantadora desde la muralla hasta el casco antiguo. Podrás visitar una sala de exposiciones destinada a la difusión del arte contemporáneo. Y para mayor gusto, podrás saborear los exquisitos platos de su conocido restaurante, uno de las mejores de la cocina de autor de la provincia.

It’s situated on the foothills of Benacantil’s mountain, under Saint Barbara’s Castle. From the park you will see a breath-taking view of the city and you will be able to start an amazing route from the walls to the old part of the town. In this park it is possible to visit a exhibition room of contemporary art or to free your mind lying on a chaise long in the terrace. And you will be also able to taste the exquisite dishes of its famous restaurant, one of the best in the Province.

EL PALMERAL THE PALMERAL

Se halla en la salida sur de la ciudad. Perfecto para pasar un día en familia o en compañía de los amigos. Es realmente espectacular, ya que cuenta con un bosque de palmeras y especies vegetales autóctonas, cascadas, estanques, lagos y ríos. Podrás disfrutar de un maravilloso paseo en barca y no dudes en llevar comida para compartirla con quien quieras en una estupenda jornada al aire libre. Dispone también de instalaciones deportivas. Además, se realizan frecuentemente actividades para el público infantil.

It’s situated on the south end of the city, it’s the perfect park to spend a day with the family or some friends. It is really an amazing spectacle, it has lots of palm trees and local vegetation as well as waterfalls, ponds, lakes and rivers. Don’t hesitate to bring some food and share it with your people in a great day on the wilds. It has sport facilities and there are also frequent activities for the children.

PLAZA NUEVANEW PLAZA

Es la antigua plaza de Hernán Cortés. Situada en pleno centro del comercio tradicional, dispone de calles peatonales y múltiples terrazas. Recorriéndola accederás bien hasta la plaza de Calvo Sotelo o bien hasta la Rambla. En su centro se halla un precioso acuario en el que podrás ver varias especies de peces autóctonos.

It is the old Hernán Cortés Plaza, situated in the centre of traditional commerce has lots of terraces and pedestrian precincts. From this plaza you can go to the Calvo Sotelo plaza or to the Rambla. It has an aquarium on its centre with various species of local fi sh.

EXPLANADA DE ESPAÑAEXPLANADA DE ESPAÑA

Es el paseo por excelencia y uno de los emblemas de Alicante. Con casi medio kilómetro de longitud, cuenta con cuatro hileras de palmeras, que le confi eren un aire muy mediterráneo. El suelo está compuesto por unas 6.600.000 teselas de mármol tricolor que forman un mosaico ondulado, muy característico para los alicantinos. Con espléndidas vistas del puerto, te invitamos a tomar algo en alguna de sus numerosas terrazas. También es muy típico ir a comprar algún detalle a los puestos de artesanía.

IIt’s a half a mile long esplanade with four rows of so Mediterranean palm trees, the esplanade par excellence and pride of Alicante. With more than 6.600.000 tricolour marble fl oor tiles that make a wavy mosaic typical of Alicante. It has great views of the port that you will be able to enjoy while eating something in one of the numerous terraces. It’s also typical to buy some souvenir from the handcrafted items stands.

PARQUE DE CANALEJASPARK OF CANALEJAS

Es uno de los más tradicionales de Alicante. Se encuentra paralelo al mar, a continuación de la Explanada. Al visitarlo, podremos ver fi cus centenarios de unos 20 metros de altura.

It’s one of the most typical parks of Alicante. It is situated by the sea, at the end of the Explanada. Visitors will see centenary 65 feet high fi ci.

FACHADA MARÍTIMA SEA FRONT

Una de las visitas obligadas en cualquier momento del año. En ella podrás realizar todo tipo de actividades lúdicas. Pero nada mejor que comenzar con un maravilloso paseo desde la playa del Postiguet hasta el muelle de poniente, haciendo parada en la Puerta del Mar, donde podremos ver uno de los edifi cios más emblemáticos de Alicante: la Casa Carbonell. Disfruta también con las vistas del puerto deportivo desde la Explanada o desde el Paseo de Gómiz, y así de paso párate a comer o a tomar algo en las terrazas, que cuentan con una amplia oferta de restauración y ocio. Más adelante, verás el parque de Canalejas y el muelle de poniente, donde se sitúa una zona de ocio desde donde podrás apreciar un espléndido atardecer sobre el puerto deportivo.

Ya entrada la noche, nada mejor que visitar la Marina Deportiva, donde te divertirás en una de las mayores zonas lúdicas de la ciudad, con restaurantes de gran fama, tascas marineras, mesones, un casino, etc. y diversos pubs concurridos hasta bien entrada la madrugada. Además, con motivo de la salida de la regata alrededor del mundo conocida como Volvo Ocean Race se ha creado un nuevo espacio público entre la marina y la playa del Postiguet.

It is one of the mandatory visits for tourists all year long. You will be able to do all kind of ludic activities, and nothing as good as starting with a wonderful walk from the beach of El Postiguet to the Poniente dockyard, stopping in the Puerta del Mar, where one of the most famous buildings of Alicante can be seen: the Carbonell House.

Enjoy also the views of the yachting harbour from the Explanada or the Paseo de Gomiz and once there take a break and have a snack in one of the terraces with a wide offer of restaurants and entertainment. The Park of Canalejas and the Poniente dockyard are ahead, and there is an entertainment area where you will be able to enjoy a great sunset on the yachting harbour.

At night the right choice is to visit the Marina Deportiva where is one of the biggest entertainment areas of the city with famous restaurants and sea fi sh speciality restaurants, much frequented pubs opened until late night, a casino, etc. Furthermore, Alicante being the starting port of the 2008/2009 Volvo Ocean Race, a new public space has been created between the marina and Postiguet Beach.

PANTEÓN DE QUIJANO QUIJANO PANTHEON

A escasos metros de la Plaza de Toros encontramos este parque que inspira aires románticos. Enrejado y con varios árboles centenarios, es el lugar elegido por muchos pintores durante la primavera por el mar de fl ores que baña su vegetación. Se construyó en memoria de Trino González de Quijano, al cual los alicantinos le otorgaron el panteón en memoria de su actitud heroica ante una de las enfermedades más graves que asolaron Alicante, por ayudar y estar junto al pueblo hasta el punto de fallecer a causa del contagio.

Near the Bullfi ghting Plaza is this romantic style park with bars and a couple of centenary trees, is the chosen place for lots of artists during spring because of the sea of fl owers of its vegetation. It was built in the memory of Trino González de Quijano, the people of Alicante built this pantheon to honour his heroic behaviour during one of the worst plagues of Alicante in the past for helping and being with the people until he passed out because of the illness.

PLAZA GABRIEL MIRÓ GABRIEL MIRÓ PLAZA

Mística y presumida, es conocida por los alicantinos como la “Plaza de Correos”. Está situada en plena zona centro, donde se encuentra el núcleo de nuestro comercio tradicional. Conmemora al famoso escritor local del mismo nombre. Es una plaza romántica, ideal para caminar o tomar un café a la vez que contemplas los espléndidos fi cus centenarios que la rodean. Mystical and vain, this plaza is popularly known as Plaza de Correos. It is situated in the city centre, on its traditional commerce centre. It was built to honour the local writer Gabriel Miró and it is the perfect plaza to take a walk or drink some coffee while watching the great centenary fi ci that surround this romantic plaza.

MUSEO ARQUEOLÓGICOPROVINCIAL (MARQ)PROVINCIAL ARCHAEOLOGICAL MUSEUM (MARQ)

El mejor lugar donde poder ver bajo una perspectiva global la historia de Alicante, a la vez que experimentas una amplia variedad de sensaciones. Abarcando la historia de todas las civilizaciones que han ocupado Alicante desde el Paleolítico hasta la Edad Moderna y Contemporánea, este maravilloso museo cuenta con una amplia colección de hasta 81.000 piezas divididas en las tres grandes áreas de la metodología arqueológica: la Sala de Arqueología de Campo, la Urbana y la Subacuática, disponiendo las tres además de escenografías, audiovisuales e interactivos, combinando lo didáctico con el entretenimiento. Además, obtuvo el premio al Museo Europeo del Año 2004.

The best place to enjoy the history of Alicante from a global point of view, and experience new sensations. This museum has a collection from all the civilizations that lived in Alicante from Palaeolithic until Modern History. The collection has a total of 81,000 items and it is divided in different rooms and three big areas related to archaeological methodology: ground, urban and sub-aqua archaeology, those three areas also have scenes, audiovisual and interactive zones joining didactic and fun. MUSEO DE FOGUERESFOGUERES MUSEUM

Ubicado en la Rambla de Méndez Núñez, en la Casa de la Festa, podrás ver la historia de la fi esta de las Hogueras de San Juan. El recorrido está dividido en los tres grandes períodos. En el primer período (1928 – 1936) veremos con detalle el nacimiento de la fi esta. Ya en el segundo tramo (1940 – 1979) cómo se forjó la parte artística. Y por último el tercer período, desde la época de los

ochenta hasta la actualidad, conocerás el nuevo desarrollo que ha experimentado la festividad. Cuenta con una Sala de Proyecciones, un gran panel fotográfi co y una exposición con trajes de la Fiesta, carteles anunciadores y “Ninots indultats”. Todo ello nos da una idea de qué ha sido, qué es, y qué será la fi esta mayor de Alicante.

Situated on the Méndez Núñez Rambla, in the “Casa de la Festa” you will plunge into the history of the Bonfi res of Saint John. The walk through history is divided in three long periods. During the fi rst period (1928-1936) you will closely witness the beginning of the fi esta. During the second period (1940-1979) how the artistic part of the fi esta was built. The last period and the end of the walk through history is from the eighties until present days where you will see the new evolution of the fi esta. The museum also has an audiovisuals room with movies of the “Fogueres” and a photo panel explaining the fi esta, panels and “Ninots indultats”, giving us an approximate idea of what has been, what is and what will be the most important fi esta of Alicante.

MUSEO TAURINOMUSEO TAURINO

Situado en la Plaza de Toros de la ciudad, acoge una exposición permanente cuyo tema son los toreros alicantinos, como Vicente Blau (El Tino), José María Manzanares, Francisco Antón (Pacorro) y Luis Francisco Esplá. Además, dispone de una biblioteca y en él se realizan actividades durante todo el año como tertulias, proyecciones y charlas con personajes reconocidos del mundo de la tauromaquia.

It is situated on the Plaza de Toros of the city, and has a permanent exhibition about bullfi ghters from Alicante such as Vicente Blau (El Tino), José María Manzanares, Francisco Antón (Pacorro) and Luis Francisco Esplá. It also has a library with bullfi ghting showings, circle reunions and interviews with celebrities of bullfi ghting take place all year long.

MUSEO DE BELLAS ARTES GRAVINA (MUBAG)GRAVINA MUSEUM OF FINE ARTS (MUBAG)

Inaugurado en 2001, este museo es dependiente de la Diputación Provincial de Alicante. En él podremos encontrar, entre otras, obras cedidas por la Diputación del período comprendido entre el siglo XVI y las primeras décadas del siglo XX. También cuenta con una gran colección de pintura del siglo XIX y una sala de exposiciones temporales.

The MUBAG was inaugurated in 2001 and the County Council of Alicante is in charge. There you will fi nd art pieces donated by the Council since the 16th century until the fi rst decades of the 20th century. It has a remarkable collection of 19th century collection and has a temporary exhibition room.

POZOS DE GARRIGÓS GARRIGÓS WELLS

Situado en la popularmente conocida como Plaza del Puente, debido al acueducto que discurría por allí para transportar las aguas pluviales procedentes de la ladera del Benacantil y almacenarlas precisamente en estos pozos que ahora son visitables. Se cree que al menos uno de estos aljibes es originariamente de la época en la que los árabes poblaron la ciudad, si bien en su confi guración actual fueron realizados por Antonio

Garrigós en el siglo XIX para paliar los efectos de la sequía de aquel entonces (de ahí que sean llamados Pozos de Garrigós).

It’s situated in the old “Plaza del Puente”, because of the rain water aqueduct from the Benacantil’s foothill that crossed the plaza and stored the water on those wells. It is said that at least one of the wells was built during the Arab period although many of them were built by Antonio Garrigós on the 19th century to mitigate a drought, hence the name of the nowadays open to visitors: Garrigós Wells. Nowadays it is inside the Museum of Water, hosting an interesting exhibition of typical local ceramic vases.

MUSEO DE BELENESNATIVITY SCENE COLLECTION

La profunda tradición de esta ciudad en cuanto a construcción de belenes tiene un íntimo y evocador exponente en esta colección de dioramas navideños que recoge distintos aspectos del nacimiento y vida de Jesús, realizada por artistas de la Asociación de Belenistas de Alicante. También se exhibe una importante colección de belenes realizados por artistas de otras partes del mundo, que posee un elevado interés por su originalidad, y un nacimiento a tamaño natural. Este curioso museo se encuentra en una vieja casa rehabilitada en el casco antiguo.

The deep tradition of nativity scenes has a close and evocating example in this Christmas scenes collection that gathers different moments of the birth and life of Jesus, made by artists of the Nativity Scene Artists Association of Alicante. There is also an important collection of nativity scenes by artists from around the globe that is highly interesting because of its originality, and also an actual size nativity scene. This particular museum is located in a restored house of the old part of the town.

LUCENTUMLUCENTUM

Levantado sobre el poblado ibérico que se asentó en el Tossal de Manises, se encuentran los restos arqueológicos de la antigua ciudad ibero-romana de Lucentum. Este yacimiento es uno de los más importantes de la Comunidad Valenciana. Situado en la zona de la Albufereta, podremos visitar la antigua cuna de Alicante y contemplar las antiguas murallas, calles, tiendas, termas, domus, etc. que había allí desde el siglo IV a.C. hasta el siglo III d.C.

Right above the Iberian village that was settled in el Tossal de Manises we fi nd the archaeological remains of the old Roman-Iberian city of Lucentum. Those remains are one of the most important ones in the Valencian Community. Located in the Albufereta zone you will see the old cradle of Alicante and admire the old walls, domi, termae, streets and shops that were there from the 4th century BC until the 3rd century AC.

POSTIGUETPOSTIGUET

Una de las playas con mayor atractivo turístico, al estar situada en pleno casco urbano de la ciudad, a los pies del monte Benacantil y el Castillo de Santa Bárbara. Rodeada de un paseo marítimo que ofrece unas vistas preciosas de la bahía, concurrido en cualquier época del año, es una playa de arena fi na y dorada. Independientemente de la estación y por hallarse tan cerca del centro, siempre hay gente que va a tomar el sol, a leer, a practicar deporte, o simplemente a relajarse.

One of the beaches preferred by tourists is located in the heart of the city at the foot of Benacantil’s mountain and Saint Barbara’s Castle. There is always someone walking through that wonderful promenade with marvellous view points of the bay of fi ne golden sand beach. Maybe because it is close to the city centre, there is always someone sunbathing, reading, practicing sports, reading or just relaxing, all year long.

SAN JUANSAN JUAN

Tras el faro del Cabo de la Huerta, se encuentra la playa más conocida de Alicante. Ésta cuenta con unos siete kilómetros de longitud y casi cien metros de anchura. After the lighthouse of cape la Huerta is the most famous beach in Alicante. It is nearly 7 km long and almost 100 m wide.
