EARN YOUR A&P CERTIFICATE.

What does it take to earn an A&P certificate? According to the BLS, to earn certification, you must:

n Complete a Part 147 FAA-approved aviation maintenance technical program such as the one offered at the Aviation Training Institute (ATI) at Vaughn College.

n Pass written, oral and practical exams that demonstrate the required skills within two years of completing the program.

WHERE YOU CAN WORK.

The BLS reports that most aircraft maintenance mechanics and technicians work in air shipping and passenger transpor-tation, for aerospace companies or the federal government, as well as in the telecommunications field. Vaughn ATI gradu-ates have found rewarding careers with such companies as:

n Cessna Citation n Kawasaki Rail Car

n Con Edison n Long Island Rail Road (LIRR)

n DHL n Metropolitan Transit Authority (MTA)

n FedEx n Sikorsky

n JetBlue n The Port Authority of N.Y. and N.J. (PANYNJ)

Here’s some good news: The employment outlook for qualified aviation technicians is looking up, reports aerospace giant Boeing.

According the 2013 Boeing Pilot & Technician Outlook, growing global economies mean airlines will take delivery of tens of thousands of new commercial aircraft during the next 20 years, resulting in an “unprecedented demand for personnel to fly and maintain those airplanes.”

In fact, Boeing predicts that an estimated 498,000 new commercial airline pilots and 556,000 new maintenance technicians will need to be hired worldwide to meet this demand in the next two decades.

The Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) takes it a step further, reporting that job opportunities will be best for mechan-ics who hold an Airframe and Powerplant (A&P) certif-icate and have knowledge of the most cutting-edge technologies and composite materials.1

While the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) offers separate certifications for body work (Airframe mechanics or the “A”) and engine work (Powerplant mechanics or the “P”) – and requires at least one of them to secure a job in the field – most employers prefer to hire mechanics who have both.

LOOKING TO LAND A HIGH-PAYING JOB IN AIRCRAFT MAINTENANCE?

An estimated 40,000 A&P positions/year will open in the next few years.2

“ My team oversees up to 300 maintenance visits annually, including budget, turnaround time, claim warranties and related issues for all Delta aircraft in different parts of the world – Hong Kong, Singapore, Beijing, Guadalajara. Thanks to Vaughn’s support, I earned my bachelor’s degree and I’m fulfilling my dream of working in aviation.”

– Ronald G. Leon Class of 2010, Atlanta, GA, Fleet Performance Coordinator, Delta Airlines.

“ The program was a great opportunity for me because I wanted to earn my degree and start work as soon as possible. I completed my program in 16 months and immediately began working for American Eagle at LaGuardia.”
