“One cannot have better ground to build on.”

Such was the first public quote from John Egan made shortly after he assumed the Chairmanship of Jaguar Motor Cars in 1980. John was an

enthusiastic and energetic 40 year-old at the time and he, along with his team, saw to it that the organization behind our favorite marque stayed calm and carried on.

We can all feel the same about JOCO. This is a terrific organization with a wonderful heritage grounded on cool cars and energized members. Being a part of this family is all about having fun and as each of us encounter Jaguar owners who are not in the Club, we need to share our enthusiasm by inviting them to join. Signing on new members should be top-of-mind for all of us as new blood adds to the vitality and future of any organization. In that spirit, lets each of us set a goal of bringing in just one new member to JOCO this year. Doing so would be great for our Club and an invaluable contribution to the perpetuation of a jolly good time. So, spread the word and let the sign-ups begin.

Speaking of spreading the word, JOCO is moving forward in the world of member communications. As we speak, the ground is being prepared to build upon our ability to reach out to members via e-mail. We are now gathering names and respective e-mail addresses for an exclusive JOCO member e-mail database that will be secure, timely, and definitely not available to anyone for anything outside of Club business. As many of us know, other Car Clubs have been effectively employing membership e-mails for Newsletters, Event Reminders, Special Notices, Memberships, Late-breaking Club Happenings, and more. So, the good news is e-mails will soon be a key part of JOCO’s member outreach benefiting all of us as well as our Club’s bottom line through postage and various production savings. Stay tuned for more news on this.

We have a very creative event planned for April, not to be missed. It’s the return of the Gumball Rally and it will be the Cat’s meow. It happens Saturday, April 19th

starting in Wilsonville so mark it down and check this month’s CF article and JOCO’s website Events Calendar for details. To warm-up your engine, here’s some trivial pursuit on it: “The Gumball Rally” is a 1976 comedy film about a coast-to-coast car race with no rules - the film is full of automotive gags, including a Jaguar that will not start (unthinkable). The word “Gumball” was the command word to hit the road and came from the lead character in the movie who is a wealthy, and very bored, candy maker. This is going to be fun!

For those of you down the Valley unable to attend our Gumball Rally, an alternative event on April 19th is the Open House put on by JOCO member Sports Car Shop in Eugene, at their Restoration Shop located at 3472 West 11th Avenue. For details, call Joe at 541.510.5296 or check the Sports Car Shop website. A reminder that if you are a JOCO member and your business is planning an event that would be appreciated by fellow automotive enthusiasts, let me know and we’ll try to provide a shout-out on it.

Fun visiting with you this month…feel free to e-mail me with any feedback as sharing thoughts will always provide JOCO better ground to build on.

Cheerio.

Jim

eRnesto’s DinneR event: time Capsule oF JoC(o)ulaRity

Like most dinners, this event featured good food, a no-host bar (complete with an overworked server), and a hostess that was very enthusiastic

about Jaguars but couldn’t take a personal tour at the moment we arrived. Pity, since we brought our growler even with the threat of rain. (And boy howdy we got a toad-choker on the way home! - ed.)

About half the group was already there (apparently most had a “whisky compass” (yes, Virginia, that is a real thing – they have them in airplanes mostly) in their car and didn’t want to miss out on the “pre-event.” If there was any “dancing on the tables and shooting out the lights” the damage was repaired before the bulk of the other guests arrived. We were delighted to see four new members enjoying their first evening with JOCO. This couldn’t have been a better introduction. Venue, crowd, entertainment, all the boxes were ticked for this one.

Prime seating was secured, and our Intrepid Presenters [The Inestimable (Indefatigable? Ineffable?) Steve and Debbie] assured one and all that a projection

screen was NOT needed (and, indeed, it wasn’t). “When in Rome” seemed to be the rule du jour (as our patron saint Peppy LePew would say), so liquid refreshments were procured, and conversations ensued.

Soon enough the vegetarians were asked to identify themselves so that the servers could begin distributing one of the specially prepared dishes (and who knew there were so many vegetarians attending tonight’s meal? They must have been nearly 25% of total attendance). The bulk of the group had a plentiful buffet of pasta, meat sauce, vegetables, green salad, and so forth – which turned out to be sufficient for some to have “seconds.”

The table conversations seemed to wane (rather than waxing, which is done on sunny days) about the time that the desert was served, so our Intrepid Presenters began their most enjoyable show. Somewhere along the line, Debbie found an old commercial

(the Interwebs can be a wonderful thing) for a car that they had entered in a 500/500 Rally* a few years ago. That inspired the search for other “vintage” advertising. Some was funny, some was entertaining for its period “production values,” and some of it was a introspective look back at inspired the question “We fell for that?” One commercial in particular, was for the forgettable Yugo. [The Yugo was lampooned in the movie “Dragnet ‘87” as “The height of Serbo-Croatian technology,” and recently by Jalopnik.com when listing the 50 Worst Cars as representing “(the) finest car that could be produced at gun-point.”] We had a great laugh at some of the vintage Shell gasoline ads that featured some (now vintage) Formula One cars, that somehow captured some of the “spirited driving” that certain JOCO members have earned a reputation for.

Our delightful evening concluded with good-byes, handshakes, and the feeling that “we should do this again sometime soon.” (Don’t forget the upcoming fun in the Gumball Rally coming to you in April –sign up

The Portland Roadster Show was held in 3 halls

at the Expo Center March 14, 15 and 16 this

year. There were many spectacular cars on

display as usual. Lots of vendors of car related goodies

and some stuff that would make you think “What

the hey?” But that’s O.K. you can walk right by. There

was only one Jaguar at the show and it was displayed

to show a company’s paint products and was not

customized in any way. In past years I have seen some

customized British cars in this show, a couple really

nice ones and several others that... well lets just say

you would not want to bump into the car or it’s owner

in a dark alley. The quality of workmanship in most

of these cars is fabulous. The quality of the paint jobs

makes you want to go home and throw a cover over

your new car no matter what make it is. Talk about

perfection. But I suppose that for an extra 20 thousand

you could get the same kind of paint job on your Kia

or even your Jag. Here’s a few pictures of a few of the

stars. £

through it’s paces at a more spirited pace than I-5 legally allows without fear of other traffic or a set of blue flashing lights behind you there is a solution. Each year, spring through fall, various sports car clubs sponsor track days down at Portland International Raceway. The Alfa Romeo Club of Oregon hosts one in the spring, which was just concluded and another in the fall. This year, it’s on Oct. 6th. I mention the Alfa clubs track days because they are a couple of the best run events of all of them. There are newer cars and older cars that come out. Daily drivers and dedicated track toys, and everything in between so whatever you bring out you’ll feel at home.

There are three classes for drivers; novice, intermediate and advanced. That keeps drivers of similar abilities and speed together. They also can provide very fine instructors to ride with you and show you the best line for corners and the braking points. Safety is a major concern. Nobody wants to get their cars banged up or themselves injured. To this end, safety inspections are done on the cars on sight and the organizers are also strict about where passing is allowed for each group. I can say from experience (as a novice) that you can have a heck of a lot of fun out on that track.

You, of course, are the one to decide how hard you push your car. Many will run at 2/3rds. or so. That provides a lot of fun with less chance of taking parts to the limit and breaking something. A few folks like to run pretty hard. But maybe that’s because they just like to work on rebuilding things or if it broke then that’s

the excuse you needed to upgrade! There are a few things you need to be aware of ahead

of time. If you have a convertible, you must have a roll bar. It is good to check your car for leaks of any fluids, check hose clamps and hoses for wear and that they are tight. Top up all fluids. Make sure your battery is held securely. Clean out all of the extra stuff that can accumulate in the trunk or back seat or under the seats. You will need a good helmet, full face is best. Be sure your tires are in good condition and inflated from three to five pounds over normal. There are dedicated racing tires and lighter weight wheels that you can get for track days if you like but you can use just about any regular tire to get started. The cost for a day of being Fangio varies from club to club. The Alfa club charges $195. Their fall track day will be Oct. 6th.

There are more track days available and you can check dates on P.I.R.’s web site. See you down there. £

JOCO is now set to have a Club event at WAAAM - Western Antique Aeroplane and Automobile Museum - in Hood River on Saturday, May 10,

2014. This is a beautifully maintained and very active

Museum. Sheri and I toured it a couple months ago - the span and condition of cars and aircraft is impressive (not a drop of oil anywhere on the polished floors in both large buildings where everything is displayed in climate-controlled comfort). Check it all out at: www.waaamuseum.org

I’ve also been in contact with the Northwest Chapter of Rolls Royce (and Bentley) Owners Club - RROC - and they are totally enthused to be with us at this event - their member in charge of Activities - Terry Saxe (in Seattle) - projects 10-12 will join us with their special Crewe cars. Based on Terry’s input, I’ve told WAAAM that between both Clubs, it’ll be a very cool display of British automotive royalty.

Here’s what else Donna, Assistant Director of WAAAM, asked me to share with you:

“The Second Saturday of May will be perfect. We will bring your club in the back gates and you can be part of the day....we will park you in the grass where there will be planes, cars, and military things running - May 10th is our Second Saturday (of every month) event and, weather permitting, this is the day airplanes and cars are brought outside for runs....definitely a day of the month to be here as lots will be going on.

Lunch is around $8-9 ( burger or sausage dog and chips plus drink ) Lunch runs 11-1:30 ish

Admission is the regular price at $12.00/person. We are excited to have you!Clear Skies!Donna” £
