Dear parents and carers,

After such a busy week at South last week with NAIDOC celebrations, this week has been a quiet and settled week. During recess and lunch it is lovely to see students in the quadrangle playing in the sunshine and those on the ovals, playing their preferred sport, following rules and respecting others’ space. It is also wonderful to see how well the students move from play areas back to their classrooms once playtime is over and are ready for work.

School Photos

School photos were taken this week and there were lots of smiles, ribbons, shiny shoes and perfect ties!

To make sure they have the best possible class photos, 2M, 2R, 2H and KH are going to have their class photos redone next Monday 31st July.

The whole Yr6 photo and the SRC photo will be taken on Tuesday 8th August.

Athletics Carnival

The annual athletics carnival is coming up next Friday

4th August. The carnival includes all students K-6 and

will be held at Gunnedah High School. Students will

come to school as usual and will walk to the high school

once the class rolls are marked. The carnival will begin

for 8yr-12yr olds at 9:30am and for 5-7yr olds at 10am.

Early Leavers

There are times when students need to leave school

early or throughout the day for a medical appointment

or family reasons. It is becoming more apparent that

many students are asked by their parents to meet

them in the administration area, or parents present to

the office and ask the administration staff to locate

their child so they can be sent to the office.

The procedure when picking up your child early from

school is as follows:

Parents sign the students out at the front office and

then proceed to the student’s classroom and give the

leave note to the teacher. This allows for the classroom

teacher to maintain their duty of care and know where

their students are at all times.

Please don’t expect the administration staff or the

classroom teacher to arrange for the student to leave

their classroom.

From the Relieving Principal…. Staff Development Evenings

On Wednesday afternoon and evening in weeks 1 and

2, the staff participated in professional learning

involving student and teacher wellbeing and

management of students. We thank staff from district

office who came across from Tamworth to deliver the

training to our staff.

I also would like to acknowledge the commitment by

South school staff, as the training began on both

afternoons straight after school at 3:30pm and didn’t

finish until well after 6pm. This is not an easy task after

teaching all day and is another example of our

teachers’ dedication to their work and students.

Missing Texts

We once again thank all the mums who covered

Accelerated Literacy texts at the beginning of the

year. The teachers have been busy writing

programs for the texts and introducing them to

their students. However, we are still waiting for a

set of books to be returned. If you were one of our

fabulous volunteers who took books home to

cover, could you please look to see they have been

returned. The specific set that remains

outstanding is titled The Elephant In The Dark. The

year 1 teachers have already created a program

for this text and are very keen to teach it. Your

assistance is appreciated.

Sport

Soccer

Both the girls

and boys

soccer teams

played today

in the next

round of the

PSSA knockout competitions.

The girls played Narrabri West PS and came away

with a win by 6 goals to 2.

The boys also

won their

game in a

nail biter

finish 2-1

against

Narrabri PS

in a very

evenly played game. Gunnedah South’s goals were

scored by Nate Vernon and Callum Simson.

Touch football

Our touch football side

also played today and had

a very convincing win

against Werris Creek PS.

LOST PROPERTY

A friendly reminder that all

items of clothing and

possessions should be

clearly labelled. There is

currently an enormous pile

of lost property in the 3-6

section of the school; most

of it is not labelled and

therefore can not be

returned to its owner. Next Friday all the left over lost

property will be taken to charity organisations. So

please ask your child to go through the lost property

and see if something belongs to them by the end of

next week.

Students had a great start back to Term 3

by celebrating NAIDOC week. This years

theme ‘Our Languages Matter’ celebrated

the unique and essential role that

Indigenous languages play in cultural

identity, linking people to their land and

water and in the transmission of Aboriginal

and Torres Strait Islander history,

spirituality and rites, through story and

song.

Kindergarten classes were visited by Aunty

Stella who shared some Aboriginal stories.

‘Old Mother Tongue Bung’ being one of

their favourites.

Year 1 and 2 participated in Indigenous

Games for sport which was run by students

from Gunnedah High School. They were

also visited by Indigenous singer/songwriter

Kelsey who taught students songs in the

local Gamilaraay language.

Students in year 3 and 4 participated in an

‘On Country Excursion’ to Mullibah Lagoon,

Pensioners Hill and Wallaby Trap. They

were met there by local Aboriginal

community members and learnt about the

significance of these sites to the local

Aboriginal people.

NAIDOC Week 2017

‘Our Languages Matter’

Page 10: Gunnedah South Public School

Students in year 5 and 6 broke off into

groups for Men’s Business and Women’s

Business. These activities were were gender

related and with local Aboriginal community

members running these activities in our

school.

Boys learnt about traditional smoking

ceremonies, hunting, ochre painting, and

playing the didgeridoo.

Girls learnt about the importance of cultural

identity, yarning circles and local Gamilaraay

language.

Throughout the week all classes participated

in dance, song, language and storytelling with

the Gomeroi Dance company. Students

thought that this was one of the best

activities of the week and enjoyed the

stories told by Brad.

It was a busy week in the kitchen with

classes cooking lilly pilly jam drops, beef

skewers with Indigenous spices and johnny

cakes. We had a special visit from our

Aboriginal elder Uncle Neville who taught

us how to make johnny cakes without a

recipe.

Page 11: Gunnedah South Public School

We also celebrated the achievements of students who had 100% attendance in Term 1 and 2.

These students were presented with awards from the Local Gunnedah AECG.

Racial Harmony Awards were also given to students for celebrating and building on respectful

relationships shared by Indigenous and Non-Indigenous Australians. Two students were selected

from each year group by teachers and were presented with awards and given an Indigenous

designed backpack.

Thank you to all our community members and visitors that took part in our NAIDOC activities. NAIDOC is a great week of celebrations to showcase the importance Aboriginal culture means to our school. Here at Gunnedah South we look forward to celebrating

Aboriginal culture all year round. Mrs Walters

In what has been described as the best result in over 20 years, the Gunnedah South Tennis team has qualified for the Finals in the PSSA knockout competition. Through the competition the team

has accounted for Narrabri West, Moree, Tamworth and now their biggest scalp, the North Coast champions, Karangi. Every member of the 6 player squad contributed to the 7 sets to 1 win with many spectators commenting on the skill of our players and their determination in

tough situations. The Finals are set down for Olympic Park later this Term.

Gunnedah South Athletics Carnival

Friday 4th August 2017

This year we will be holding our K-6 school athletics carnival on the

upgraded and totally secure site at Gunnedah High School. Their

larger facilities will enable our whole school to be on the one site and

have the added space for parents to watch the activities.

All students are to come to Gunnedah South School as normal on

Friday morning.

All students will walk from Gunnedah South to Gunnedah High

School under the supervision of staff after the 8:55am bell.

All students will be dismissed from Gunnedah High School at 3:00pm.

If you usually collect your child/children from Winder Place (Parent’s

Gate) or Bridge Street (Western Gate) you will need to collect them

from the High School. If your child walks home please ensure he/she

can navigate his/her way home or make other arrangements. If your

child travels by bus he/she will be collected by the bus from the High

School.

Please note that there will be modified rules for some field events

and that the school code of conduct will apply.

Parents and friends who plan to attend the carnival will need to

enter Gunnedah High School through the gate on the western side of

the school. Parking will be in the showground. All parents and friends

need to sign in and out at this gate. There will not be access through

the main gate.

Please join us for a day of competition and fun activities.

Parent Code of Conduct

Expectations

As a parent/guardian of a student who will be representing Gunnedah South Public School and playing under the auspices of the rules and regulations of the relevant association, you must meet the following requirements in regard to your conduct during any such activity

or event:

1. Remember that your child participates in sport for their own enjoyment, not yours.

2. Encourage your child to participate, do not force them.

3. Focus on your child's efforts and performance rather than winning or losing.

4. Never ridicule or yell at your child and other children for making a mistake or losing a

competition.

5. Remember that children learn best by example. Appreciate good performance and skilful

play by all participants.

6. Support all efforts to remove verbal and physical abuse from sporting events.

7. Respect officials' decisions and teach children to do likewise.

8. Show appreciation for the coaches and teachers. Without them, your child could not

participate.

9. Respect the rights, dignity and worth of every young person regardless of their gender,

ability, cultural background or religion.

10. Be a positive role model.

11. Understand the repercussions if you breach, or are aware of any breaches of, this code

of behaviour.
