Deputy Principal’s Message Dear Parents and Carers,

As we come into week 7 it appears that term three is simply vanishing before our eyes. I'm sure the term is flying by because we have been so busy providing students with a huge variety of experiences and learning opportunities, ranging from sport, drama, music and dance to debating, public speak-ing and chess!!

Opportunities galore

This week saw our amazing tennis team compete at the NSW state finals at Olympic Park in Sydney. South easily managed to get through the semi finals against Forster Public School, and then fought it out for the championship against Milton Public School. It was an absolute thriller with only 2 games the difference after a nail biting tie breaking set!

Well done to the team and thank you to Mr Sumpter and all the parents who attended. This is the third year in a row that South’s tennis team have made it to Sydney and is a true indication of the talent we have at our school.

The South school chess players are making their presence felt also, as they head to Tamworth next Tuesday 3rd September to compete in the North West region finals at Calrossy. Mr Smee’s hidden talent in chess has been unearthed and he, along with Mrs Passfield will be in attendance to help out the team.

The Premiers Debating Challenge continues to let some of our senior students shine as they are waiting to find out if they have made it through to the next round of competition.

Congratulations to the South GREYS team, who were victorious against Quirindi Public School on Monday. This now means both South teams; the REDS and GREYS are on an even point score, and will be waiting to see how they rank against the other competing schools in the state.

Date correction: Grandparents Day 2019

Last week’s newsletter indicated that Grandparents Day would be held next week.

Please note, this was an error and Grand Parents Day will be held on Monday 28th October to coincide with the official National Grandparents Day on Sunday 27th October.

Attendance

If your child is away from school, our teachers will be calling home to ask for an explanation. If your child is away often due to health reasons, you may be asked to supply a medical certificate.

SMS messages are automatically sent to parents and the easiest way to explain your child’s absence is to reply. Your response will be sent directly to teachers.

Please ensure that if your child is away that you call the front office on 67421899 and the explanation will be passed onto your child’s teacher.

Coming to school

There have been several incidents lately where students have not been safe whilst walking, riding or scootering from home to school and back in the afternoons.

I ask that all parents speak to their children over the weekend about the way they get to school each day and the safest possible way to do so.

If students are riding or scootering, they are required to wear a helmet and those who are crossing roads should be old enough to do so or with an adult.

Some students have been arriving to school far to early and there is no supervision.

Please remember that school does not begin each day until 9am and the ideal time to arrive at school is half an hour prior to that at 8:30. Gates do not open until shortly before that time.

Fathers Day stall

Thank you to our wonderful P & C members who came along to hold the Father’s Day stall on Thursday. Special mention must go to Christie Barnes who came back for a second shift at lunchtime on Thursday and to Kirra Tindall who came back on today to accommodate the students who had been on excursions and away at sport.

Excursions

This week Year 2 students have travelled to the Warrumbungle National Park for their annual excursion.

3G and 3M have travelled to Gulgong to ‘go back in time’ at the Environmental Education Centre and next Monday will be 3W’s turn.

Thank you to all the staff and parents who have given up their own time to provide our students with such a rich and worthwhile experiences.

Wishing you all a very restful and happy weekend.

With kind regards,

Nicki Walsh
