The Feast of the Presenta on of The Lord occurs
yearly on February 2nd, however, it is celebrated
on Sunday only about every 7 years (I am sure leap
year has some effect on this). In a beau ful way
this great feast takes us back to the Christmas Sea‐
son, for it concerns Mary and Joseph presenting the infant Jesus
at the temple in Jerusalem. The occasion is presented (no pun
intended) within the Gospel of Luke, our Gospel reading today.
The Feast of the Presenta on reminds us, like Jesus’ Bap sm,
like the Feast of the Epiphany, of Jesus’ presence in the world
and of His mission to bring to frui on the Kingdom of God.
Today the Prophet Malachi states in the first reading: “Lo, I am
sending my messenger to prepare the way before me...” The
ending of the Gospel reading says: “The child grew and became
strong, filled with wisdom; and the favor of God was upon him.”
In the Gospel today, we meet for the one and only me in scrip‐
ture, Simeon and Anna. In a sense, they represent not only the
search for the fulfillment of all prophecy, but as well the desire
of all humanity for hope fulfilled and for the promise of salva‐
on. Though neither Simeon nor Anna represented temple
leaders nor the hierarchy of Judaism, through their fidelity and
genuine devo on, they recognized the promise of this blessed
child.
As we experienced at Christmas, this infant king would not be
living a life of splendor nor riches, nor would His journey be
easy. Simeon tells Mary, “...and you yourself a sword will pierce”
and this prophecy immediately transports us to Golgotha and
Jesus’ crucifixion.
In a real way, this Feast of the Presenta on of the Lord is a
bridge between Jesus’ Incarnation at Bethlehem and His Passion,
Death and Resurrec on at Jerusalem.
Blessings,
Deacon Steve
"He aquí que yo envió a mi mensajero.
Bendiciones,
Diácono Steve

Stewarding Our Children in the Pews 6
Last weekend, I sat behind a family of ac ve, squirming children whose parents consistently redirected their
a en on to the readers, the priest, and the ac on at the altar. I smiled as the children flipped missale e
pages, whispered ques ons, and tried to kneel correctly without knocking each other over. When Father
Gino elevated the consecrated host, the baby facing the altar in her mother’s arms cried out and my heart
leapt! It sounded like, “Hi, Jesus!”
So many mes, we adults are tempted to apply the “children should be seen but not heard” belief to our children in
Church, but should that really be our goal? Is that how Christ treated children? Or, should we help our children find their
place and their voice as part of the assembled Body of Christ? Please understand that I do value sacred silence where I
can find rest in the Lord, too! I am not advoca ng for chao c screaming kids running up and down the aisles since Mass is
communal prayer. But, parents have probably worked hard already just to come prepared with extra supplies to bring their
children to Mass. This can feel like a chore to receive some spiritual nourishment; but, even more so when receiving scowls
or disapproving frowns. Perhaps it would be better to move to the center of the pew in anticipation of trips to the restroom,
smiling, offering a kind welcome or even a gentle offer of help if needed for our li lest Catholics and their parents who are
stewarding them. Otherwise, they may not return… I know that I sought out a new parish because of this when my son was
young. Rachel McKenny shared some important sta s cs when she wrote about a ending Mass with toddlers in a base-
ment cry room without a televised feed (“Crying Babies Have A Place in the Pew”, U.S. Catholic , May 1, 2017):
“For every disapproving look toward a young family with a squawking baby, there are 3 mumbled
conversa ons in the narthex about young people's drop in Mass a endance. There's an old saying,
"Your parish is dying if no baby is crying," and, anecdotally, that seems to be true. According to
the Pew Research Center, the share of the popula on that iden fies as Catholic fell from 23.9 % in
2007 to 20.8 % in 2014, and the drop is most notable among people under 50.”
What kind of Church do we want to be: dying or thriving? welcoming or aliena ng? Anna, Simeon, St. Joseph, and the
Blessed Mother show us the way today. Even knowing their Son was God, the Holy Parents s ll carefully observed the faith
prac ces of their day bringing him to the temple “to present Him to the Lord, just as it is wri en in the law of the Lord.”
They were good stewards of their child, teaching Him to live in obedience to their faith prac ces from His infancy and
throughout His “growing up” years. Anna and Simeon recognized the gi of this holy family and welcomed them to the
temple. Through their hospitality, they were good stewards of Jesus and His Holy Parents.
Those of us entrusted with the care of children — whether our own
children, godchildren, family members, or students — have a vital role
to play in the faith formation of these young ones. We can help
parents steward these children well, forming them in the faith by
both instruc on and example throughout their lives and ours.
Good Chris an Stewards, let us present our gi s and our young ones
joyfully to the Lord so our Church will thrive!

Laudato Si’: Caring for God’s Crea on Have you been reading our weekly Laudato Si’ Reflec ons in this bulle n? What do you think? Would you
like to help us start 2020 by crea ng a Laudato Si’ ministry here at Holy Name?
Be part of the team forming a new ministry at HNJ! Why?
In his encyclical, Laudato Si', On Care for Our Common Home, Pope Francis describes the great act of love by which God cre‐
ated our world and everything in it. He describes the way we can encounter God’s Crea on, with wonder and gra tude; and,
our interconnectedness with everything in the universe, through our mutual Creator. Pope Francis also describes humanity’s
special role in God’s plan, and our need to imitate His generosity in self‐sacrifice and good works, as well as the environmen‐
tal and social degrada on he sees in the world now, our need and ability to do be er.
The key to this is living in right rela onship – with God, with other human beings, and with the good things of the Earth.
When we neglect one rela onship, all suffer. Problems with the way we interact with God, with each other, and with our
natural world result in human disconnects within our socie es and ecological problems in our world.
Are you…
...interested in joining with others in our community to improve our rela onships and our world?
...concerned about the environment for future genera ons?
...open to learning about and living the Catholic Church’s teachings about the environment, global inequality and poverty?
...interested in responding with individual and communal ac on?
If the answer to any of these ques ons is YES, please contact: Marilyn and Anne, Email:‐ [email protected]

Catholic Chari es as well as other ministries that feed, clothe, and assist the poor throughout San Bernardino and Riverside counties;
diocesan forma on and ministry training for adults;
pro‐life, family, and youth initiatives;
Catholic schools;
formation for seminarians — our future priests!
Together, DDF Donors in 92 parishes provide resources that help people in need today and form tomorrow’s Church leaders, from children and adults in parishes to men who will serve in the priesthood for decades to come.
Help people in need beyond our parish boundaries.
Support men discerning and studying for the priesthood.
