GX 1000 BReference Guide

Introduction

The GX 1000 B is a rugged PC-compatible based computer. All computers comeequipped with a touchscreen, full SVGA color display, multiple network options,

and industry standard I/O. Each system is fully capable of running MS-DOS,Windows NT, Windows 2000, Windows XP, Embedded XP as well as UNIX andLinux.

The GX 1000 B is designed for either fixed mount or vehicular mountedapplications. It can be powered through an AC power supply or from aDC/DC power converter. It is capable of either hard-wired or wirelessEthernet connections.

About this Guide

This guide provides basic information on the operation of the GX 1000 B.Additional questions not answered by this guide should be directed to GlacierComputer or its agents. Topics covered include: parts, accessories, basicoperation, troubleshooting, service and regulatory information.

OVERVIEW

Display Panel

The display panel consists of a gasketed resistive touchscreen mounted over a10.4 TFT LCD flat-panel video display. The touchscreen is used to replace themouse to activate functions and initiate actions.

I/O Panel

All cabled connections to the system are made through the I/O panel. The I/Opanel is located on the bottom of the GX 1000 B. These connections are a powerswitch, a power connector, two serial I/O connectors, two USB slots, two PS/2ports and VGA out. A panel on the side of the unit also allows access to the harddrive. See appendix A.

The onboard CPU incorporates the VIA VT8606 chipset and theVT82C686B with built-in AGP-4x VGA controller; the PC/104 bus isavailable for further expansions. Its 8-layer structure reduces signal noiseand meets ACPI function with its built-in power management feature.

BASIC OPERATIONS

Warning: As with all computer equipment the PC mustbe installed in a safeand secure manner. For approved mounting procedures please contact yourGlacier representative.

Power-Up

It is important to make all peripheral connections BEFORE powering up thesystem.

Before powering up the computer for the first time, be sure the power supply andcomputer are mounted in an approved manner and that all cable and peripheralconnections are securely attached to the computer. Make certain that all cabling issecured as to avoid entanglement with the equipment or the operator and that thepower switch is OFF.

For AC input: plug the power cord into a surge-protected 110VAC outlet. Turn thepower switch to ON. Press the orange on/off button on the front of the unit.

For DC input: turn the external DC power supply on if you are using one, then turnthe power switch on the bottom of the unit to ON. Lastly, push the orange powerbutton on the front of the unit.

Booting-Up

Upon turning on, the system boots up immediately with no action required. Onpower up, the system conducts a power-on self-test (POST), runs the hardwareinitialization program, and then boots to the operating system.

If BIOS access is needed press ESC during the POST.

BASIC OPERATIONS(Continued)

Reboot

If the system freezes or locks up during normal operation, performing a reboot canreset the system. The type of reboot depends upon the state of the system.

Warm Boot

Perform a warm boot when you need to clear the systems memory (i.e. VirtualMemory Low warning).

To perform a warm boot with or without a keyboard

Select START - SHUTDOWN - RESTART COMPUTER or

press the orange soft shutdown button on the front of the unit, which will enact aWindows shutdown procedure. Press it again to initiate a boot up procedure.

On computers running Windows NT, 2000 and XP, press CTL-ALT-DEL andchoose SHUTDOWN. This is a good option if the screen isnt responding.

Cold Boot

Warning: Repeated cold boots will result in data loss and may damagesystem files, rendering the hard drive corrupt and the computer unusable.

Perform a cold boot only when the screen is frozen, or the system is otherwiselocked up and doesnt respond to any input. The cold boot is essentially a power-up sequence.

To perform a cold boot on the GX 1000 B, hold the orange button down for sixseconds; the unit will then turn off. A second option is to shut the unit via therocker switch on the bottom of the computer. After any of these methods, waitapproximately 15 seconds, and then turn the computer back on.

TOUCH-BASED APPLICATIONS

General Functions and Guidelines

The computer is designed and configured for touch-based applications where thevideo screen displays graphical icons whose corresponding function is activatedwhen touched by a user. Touch-based applications can be divided into twodifferent categories:

Graphical User Interface (GUI) applications, based on a GUI operatingsystem, such as Windows.

DOS-based applications.

For GUI applications, a mouse-like touch driver is installed allowing standardapplications to be executed. However, for optimum ease of use, applicationsshould:

Provide visual feedback to confirm a touch

Avoid double-clicks whenever possible

Keep touch targets large (for example, scroll bars can be difficult to use)

With these provisions applications can be developed using standard tools andpractices, including Visual C++, Visual Basic, etc.

To enable a right click, click on the mouse icon in the system tray (near the timedisplay)

Internal UPS (optional)

The GX 1000 B has an internal UPS available as an option. The UPS is oftenused to keep the GX 1000 B running while a forklift battery change is performed.This prevents a user from having to log off and shut the unit down. Also, the UPSprovides additional filtering against electrical noise often found on electric forklifts.

The operation of the UPS is transparent to the user. As long as the powerconverter is on and the computers on/off switch is in the on position, the UPS ischarging. If the UPS battery were completely discharged it would need to becharged for 6 8 hours with the computer running to fully recover. With a fullcharge, the UPS will run the computer with no external power source forapproximately 20-30 minutes.

Prior to theUPSbeing discharged fully, the unit will automatically begin a smoothWindows shutdown procedure. Each open Window will be closed and the unit willthen turn itself off.

TROUBLESHOOTINGProblem Possible Causes and Solutions

Reseat the connectors on both thepower input and output cables onthe DC power converter

Check the internal fuse

Fixed Mount

Check the ON/OFF switch on therear panel

Check the circuit breakers feedingthe 110V AC wall outlet supplyingpower to the GX 1000 B

Make sure the power cord is firmlyseated in the wall outlet

If a surge protector is installedbetween the computer and the walloutlet, make sure that if it has anON/OFF switch, that it is on, andthat any fuses or circuit breakers onthe surge protector have not blownor tripped

Regulatory Information

Radio Frequency Interference Requirements

This device has been tested and found to comply with the limits for a Class A

digital device pursuant to Part 15 of the Federal Communications CommissionsRules and Regulations. These limits are designed to provide reasonableprotection against harmful interference when the equipment is operated in acommercial environment. This equipment generates, uses, and can radiate radiofrequency energy and, if not installed and used in accordance with the instructionmanual, may cause harmful interference to radio communications. Operation ofthis equipment in a residential area is likely to cause harmful interference in whichcase the user will be required to correct interferences at their expense.

However, there is no guarantee that interference will not occur in a particularinstallation. If the equipment does cause harmful interference to radio or television

reception, which can be determined by turning the equipment off an on, the user isencouraged to try to correct the interference by one or more of the followingmeasures:

Re-orient or relocate the receiving antenna.

Increase the separation between the equipment and receiver.

Connect the equipment into an outlet on a circuit different from that whichthe receiver is connected.

Consult the dealer or an experienced Radio/TV technician for help.

Warranty Information

One Year Standard Warranty included with Purchase

For one year following shipment, owners will return their units to the factory withprepaid shipping cost. Preceding shipment, owner is to call Glacier Computer for aReturn Material Authorization (RMA) number. The RMA number is to be clearlymarked on the shipping label or container. The unit will be repaired and shippedback to the customer within 10 business days of receipt. Glacier will pay standardground service shipping charges. Glacier will bill shipping and handling chargesfor expedited shipping service. Repairs to damage caused by wear outside ofnormal use will be charged at Glaciers current charges for service and materials.

Extended Warranty

Units are returned to factory, shipping prepaid. Preceding shipment, owner is tocall Glacier Computer for a Return Material Authorization (RMA) Number. TheRMA Number is to be clearly marked on shipping label or shipping container. Theunit will be repaired and shipped back to the customer via ground shipping servicewithin 10 business days of receipt. Owner is to pay for any expedited returnshipping service. Please contact a Glacier Sales Representative for the chargesfor Extended Warranty contracts. This is an annual commitment, paid in advance,under contract with the customer or customers designated representative.

One Year Non-Warranty Service

Repairs to units not covered by One-Year Standard Warranty or StandardExtended Warranty will be charged at Glacier Computers current charges for timeand materials.

Custom Extended Warranty and Service Programs

Glacier also offers custom warranty and service programs designed to meetunique customer needs. Please contact Glacier or your service representative to

get more information.

Bluetooth

Introduction

The aim of Bluetooth technology is to be a low cost, low

power, and short-range radio product. Bluetooth replaces physicalcable connections in mobile or portable devices.

Any two Bluetooth devices create a Bluetooth piconetnetwork. A single Bluetooth piconet has one master and at mostseven active slaves. In a single piconet a Bluetooth connection isonly established between the master and a slave. Any two slaves ina piconet cannot create a Bluetooth connection. In most cases thecomputer will be designated as the master and peripherals such asa scanner will be the slave.

How to install the Level One USB Bluetooth Module

Do not install the Bluetooth module at this time. You will be prompted later.

1. Go to C:\Drivers\Bluetooth and double-click on Setup.exe

2. Click Select to choose English setup.

3. Click on USB Adapter for PC

Important: to ensure proper system operation it is imperative that the

following installation procedure be carefully followed.

Failure to comply with these installation instructionswill void the system warranty.

Check your wiring configuration:White to +VDC,Blackto VDC. Keep the cable length to a minimum. Cut off any excess.

We recommend using a Deep Cycle Marine Battery.

Using a 10-amp fuse, connect the White lead to the positive terminal of

the battery. Connect theBlacklead to the negative terminal of the battery. Route wires away from all moving parts. Mount all equipment within the confines of the vehicle. Use only approved mounting brackets. Use only approved power connectors.
