"Whoever receives one child such as this in My Name, receives Me." This statement from Jesus is actually very similar to the famous passage from Matthew's Gospel where He says, "Whatever you did for one of these least brothers of Mine, you did for Me" (25:40). But in Matthew, this idea of serving Jesus by serving others is applied to more dramatic cases: the hun-gry and thirsty, the sick and imprisoned, the naked and the stranger. Isn't it interesting to note that caring for children can also be a way of experiencing Christ's presence among us? For many people, "receiving" a child is part of their daily rou-tine. Those of us who are parents obviously welcome children into our families and continue to serve them throughout their lives. Grandparents, siblings, other relatives, foster parents, and sometimes neighbors and friends also make room in their
homes and their hearts to welcome the children God has placed in their circle. Teachers, physicians, therapists, and others who work with children on a professional level are also in the "business" of receiving children. How wonderful to think that all of this normal activity can offer us the opportunity to encounter Christ! Because dealing with children can become routine, or at times even be filled with challenges and frustrations, we might need to pause to remind ourselves about the blessings that they bring. Certainly their joy and innocence is a gift in itself, but in today's Gospel we are reminded that their presence brings more than that. When we serve children in a spirit of generosi-ty, when we "receive" them as they are--with all that entails--we are in turn receiving Jesus... who first came to us as a child.
SAINTS FOR GIRLS RETREAT
The CTK Saints for Girls group went swimming in Dickinson at the West River Community Center in August. Afterwards, they visited the Benedictine Sisters of Sacred Heart Monastery in Richardton, where they spent the night and attended Sunday Mass. The sisters gave each girl a spe-cial hat knitted from wool that was hand-spun from the lla-mas at the monas-tery. All girls in Grades 2 through 12 are invit-ed to join Saints for Girls. LEARN TO PRAY AS A FAMILY
Parents are invited to attend a workshop on Oct. 17 on learning to pray as a family. Please attend the SMCHS Homecoming Breakfast hosted by the SMCHS Music Department on September 20 from 9:00 am to 1:00 pm. Proceeds will go toward next summer’s band tour. There will also be a Bake Sale. Tickets can be purchased in advance from the SMCHS Music Department or at the door. Tickets are $7 for Adults 13 and over and $4 for Children 3 - 12. French Toast, Sausage and Fruit will be served. Saint Joseph School in Mandan will hold it’s 12th Annual Spaghetti Supper & Book Fair on Thursday, September 24, 2015. It will be held from 5:00 - 7:00 pm in the St. Joseph’s School Cafeteria. The sisters of Sacred Heart Monastery invite you to attend “Celebrate the West 2015” on Saturday, Sept. 26, 2015. This is a 20th Annual Event, and it will be held at the Elks Lodge #1137 in Dickinson, ND. Tickets are $45 to support refurbishing of the community room. For reservations, please call 701-974-2121. St. Martin’s Catholic Church in Center, ND, will be holding their annual Fall Dinner on Sunday, September 27. A Polka Mass will be held at St. Martin’s Church at 10:00 am with dinner served at the Betty Hagel Memorial Civic Center in Center from 11:00 am — 1:00 pm for a free will offering. The menu will include meatballs, ham, mashed potatoes, corn, cole slaw, buns, and pie. There will be Bingo, a raffle, a craft and produce sale, a silent auction, a cake walk, and children’s games. The Knights of Columbus Council #2760 from the Church of St. Joseph in Mandan is hosting the first-ever Cajun Cowboy Fais Do Do Festival on Friday, Oct. 2 at 7:00 pm at the Mandan Eagles Club. Tickets are $25 and include a night of fun with authentic Cajun shrimp gumbo and jambalaya, live music by the local band “Taken Up,” a silent auction, a 50/50 raffle, and beer sampling from North Dakota, Montana, and South Dakota breweries! Proceeds go to benefit projects at the St. Joseph Parish, School, and Daycare. Tickets can be purchased at the Mandan Eagles Club, Dakota Community Banks, or the Church of St. Joseph Parish Office.
