While the presidential hopefuls (and their television ads and automated phone calls) have now moved on to other areas of the country, there is still some voting to be done at the April 8 Primary Runoff. The Travis County Republican Party office tells me that there are no runoffs for any of their candidates for public office. Not so for the Dems. According to the Travis County Democratic Party office, there are two runoffs that affect us: Mindy Montford and Rosemary Lehmberg for Travis County District Attorney, and Dale Henry and Mark Thompson for Railroad Commissioner. The Primary Runoff election will be held on Tuesday, April 8, 2008. If you didn’t vote at all in the March 4 primary, you can still vote in the April 8 runoff. If you voted in the March 4 Democratic Party primary, you can vote in the April 8 runoff. We’re in Precinct No. 361, so our polling location is the West Rural Community Center at 8656 Highway 71 West. Early voting takes place March 31 through April 4. You can do early voting at any location; however, the three locations closest to our two subdivisions are the Randalls at Brodie & Slaughter, the Randalls at MoPac & William Cannon, and a new location at the Bee Cave City Hall out in the new Bee Cave Galleria. Voting hours at those three locations are Monday-Saturday 7am to 7pm, and Sunday 12:00noon to 6pm. As I’ve said before, two of my favorite websites for voting information are the League of Women Voters Austin Area (www.lwvaustin.org) and the Travis County Voters website (www.traviscountytax.org/ goVoters.do). Between those two sites, you can find just about any type of information you’d be looking for AND verify your current voter’s registration (or print out a voter registration application, if you haven’t already registered). We’re a traveling bunch of folks! Carolyn Barkley (on Streamside) spent 3 weeks touring India, a place she’d always dreamed of seeing! Read Carolyn’s article in this issue about one exciting aspect of her trip.…… Highway 71 update. According to information obtained at the Texas Department of Transportation’s presentation on improvements to Highway 71, the proposed configuration for our segment will be four lines divided by a center turn lane with shoulders, and anticipated construction start date is FY 2010.…… Runnin’ round the hood, and elsewhere! Sharon Figaro (on Bright Star) shares this story with us. Sharon says: “I’ve been running for many years and enjoy running the quiet streets of our neighborhood. I’ve never really entered any races, although my dad always encouraged me and asked why I didn’t run in any races. I prefer to run alone, but for my dad I entered the Capital 10K three years ago and got 10th place in my age group. Last year I entered again and got 4th place in my age group. This year the race is March 30th, and I am planning on entering again. Who knows--maybe I can get 2nd place, and my dad would be so proud. I know you are always looking for new stuff to put in the newsletter, so you can do whatever you want with this little information about the crazy lady running around in our neighborhood.” Thank you, Sharon! This is exactly the kind of thing we enjoy learning about each other!…… The “Didjaknow” column is a monthly collection of random information and observations by your newsletter editors. We’re always looking for interesting tidbits that may not be big enough for a full story but nevertheless deserve the spotlight. Please send your contributions for this column to [email protected]. Didjaknow... Book Club Update For its latest discussion of Eat, Pray, Love by Elizabeth Gilbert, the book club took a cue from the author’s indulgence in the pleasure of Italian food and enjoyed some delicious Italian treats. On Thursday April 10 we’ll be discussing Love in the Time of Cholera by Gabriel Garcia Marquez. Then we’ll gather again o n May 22 to talk about The Memory Keeper’s Daughter by Kim Edwards.
