the Campbell County 4-H Horse Camp. We had a great week with over 85 youth and 100 adult volunteers participating at this annual event held at the Alexandria Fairgrounds. The camp offers in-depth instruction on overall horse care and safety. The purpose of horse camp is for the horses and kids to learn together and to work as a team. Classes were offered for Western Riding, Hunt Seat, Contest, Gaited and Miniature Horses. Total family involvement is what makes this camp a success as well as the support from parents, volunteers, businesses and the Alexandria Fairboard.

The 2019 Kentucky 4-H Teen Conference was held June 10-13 on the University of Kentucky Campus. Over 700 teens, chaperones and agents attended this year’s four day event which inspires teens to continue their 4-H involvement. Campbell County 4-H was proud to have received the Kentucky 4-H State Teen Conference Largest County Delegation Award again this year! Through this 95th Annual Conference, teen 4-H’ers from across the Commonwealth developed valuable life skills, leadership competencies and communication abilities. Delegates had the opportunity to practice independence while staying on the University of Kentucky campus living in dorms, visiting “The 90” and other academic and student life buildings that allowed them to see how college students live. Delegates had the opportunity to explore their future education plans by exploring all that the University of Kentucky College of Agriculture, Food and Environment can offer. Delegates gained six hours of instruction in a core content area of their choice. Over forty departments within the University of Kentucky, agencies and businesses in the Lexington-Fayette County area, and local stakeholders conducted these learning experiences. A service learning opportunity provided the youth a way to practice generosity and civic engagement. Over thirty community serving organizations collaborated with Kentucky 4-H to provide these experiences. Examples of service learning activities included putting mulch down at the UK Arboretum, volunteering at the Family Care Center, Lighthouse Ministries, and the Lexington Ronald McDonald House. All delegates also participate in a leadership minor. This year’s minor focused on diversity and inclusion using curriculum from Minorities in Agriculture, Natural Resources and Related Sciences. The workshop was developed to help challenge our members to think about ways that they can include others from diverse backgrounds in 4-H and life’s daily activities and to be role models to others.
Other featured events included State 4-H Officer Elections, State Fashion Revue, Entertainment by the State 4-H Performing Arts Troupe and Kentucky 4-H Achievement & Scholarship Recognition. Campbell County was proud of all of our award winners who were: Rebekah Foutch- $1000 Michael Brandy/ Ale-8 One Scholarship, Anya Deaton, Lydia Deaton, Katrina Kursell and Daniel Myers- Gold Achievement Award Winners plus Rebekah, Katrina and Daniel were selected as finalists to interview for the top Emerald Achievement Award. Karley Kursell – Silver Achievement Award and Syd Fillhardt- Clover Level 5 Award.

During a two day beginner sewing class, 4-H’ers learned basic sewing skills including how to make a bobbin, how to thread a sewing machine, and how to use a pattern to create a project. Not only did they make an item they could take home, but also they used their new skills in service to others. The adult bibs that were made will be utilized at our local Active Day. 4-H encourages youth to “Learn by Doing” but also to give back to your community, and these ladies put their 4-H spirit into this project. They did a great job!!

T he 115th Kentucky State Fair runs August 15- 25, 2019 at the
Kentucky Fair and Exposition Center in Louisville, Kentucky.
Gates open at 7 a.m. each day. The Kentucky State Fair is a
tradition for generations of families across the Commonwealth
and beyond. Last year over 600,000 people attended the 11 day
event. Reduced price tickets are available at $2.50 each. Orders
must be placed by July 29th.
The State Fair offers lots of educational and entertaining
exhibits, fun filled attractions, top of the line concerts, a World’s
Championship Horse Show, rides and my favorite- the fair food.
There are also plenty of other activities all designed to create
memories for friends and families. Something new this year is
that all of the concerts are free with paid gate admission.
The Kentucky State Fair hosts 4-H projects from across the state in
“Cloverville.” Cloverville is the village-like area where all non-
livestock 4-H Exhibits are displayed during the fair. Cloverville
consists of 18 divisions where 4-H’ers can showcase their projects.
In order to exhibit a 4-H project, 4-H’ers must first qualify on
the county level. Kentucky 4-H believes that all youth should have
opportunities for positive youth development in four guiding
concepts: mastery, belonging, independence and generosity. The
Kentucky State
Fair 4-H events
demonstrate a 4-
H’ers level of
mastery in
project work through completion of displayed items.
We are excited about the changes happening with Cloverville
this year. Cloverville is moving to the South Wing of the Kentucky
Fair and Exposition Center and will be a part of the fair’s new
AgLAND Exhibit. AgLAND will include more than an acre of
agriculture exhibits which will highlight Kentucky’s farm and field
heritage, including the future of farming and agribusiness through
4-H and FFA exhibits. AgLAND is brought to you by Kentucky’s
Farm Families and the Kentucky Department of Agriculture.
So why not plan a trip to this year’s Kentucky State Fair? The
Kentucky Fair and Exposition Center is one of the 10 largest
facilities of its kind in the US. It features 1.3 million square feet of
contiguous exhibit space and includes about 30 acres that are
under roof and air conditioned. You can visit the website to see
the daily schedule and maps. There is also an App and it has
Twitter, Facebook and Instagram accounts for the most recent
Kentucky State Fair
