Public Fishing Areas and Community Fishing Program SitesThe N.C. Wildlife Resources Commission provides free pub-lic fishing opportunities at more than 100 Public FishingAreas (PFA) and Community Fishing Program (CFP) sitesthroughout the state. The Wildlife Commission has enhanced fishing op-portunities at PFAs by clearing banks of underbrush and, in some cases,by constructing universally-accessible fishing piers, creating graveled orpaved parking lots, installing fish attractors or baiting the areas with fishfeed. CFP sites are located primarily at city- or county-owned parks andmany have regular operation hours. The Wildlife Commission enhancesfishing at many CFP sites by stocking fish, feeding the fish and installingartificial reefs or fish attractors. Most CFP sites are stocked from April toSeptember with harvestable-sized channel catfish.

Tackle Loaner ProgramThe N.C. Wildlife Resources Commission’s Tackle Loaner Pro-gram (TLP) loans fishing tackle to the public similar to theway a library loans a book. Anglers of all ages register at par-ticipating city- or county-owned parks (often CFP sites) to re-ceive a tackle loaner ID card, which allows them to check out a rod and reelfor the day. The Wildlife Commission created the TLP to introduce people, especially children, to fishing and to encourage novice anglers to continuedeveloping their angling skills.

To find PFAs, CFP sites and TLP locations near you, visit the WildlifeCommission’s Web site, www.ncwildlife.org and click on “Fishing.” Call theDivision of Inland Fisheries at (919) 707-0220 for more information onthese programs.

North Carolina Angler Recognition ProgramThe Wildlife Resources Commission’s North Carolina AnglerRecognition Program provides recognition to anglers whocatch trophy-size fish that do not qualify as state records. Please see table on inside back cover for NCARP minimum measurements.

The projects highlighted in this booklet were made possible because anglers and boaters

pay special federal excise taxes and import duties on fishing equipment and motorboat

fuels. The N.C. Wildlife Resources Commission receives a share of these federal monies,

which are matched with 25 percent state or other non-federal money and invested in im-

portant fishing and boating projects across the state. Without your support for the Federal

Aid in Sport Fish Restoration Program, our agency’s ability to provide fishing and boating

opportunities in North Carolina could be curtailed severely.

Under Title VI of the Civil Rights Act of 1964, Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of

1973, Title II of the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990, the Age Discrimination Act of

1975, Title IX of the Education Amendments of 1972, the U.S. Department of the Interior

and its bureaus prohibit discrimination on the basis of race, color, national origin, disabil-

ity, age or sex (in educational programs). If you believe that you have been discriminated

against in any program, activity or facility, or if you desire further information, please write

to: Equal Employment Officer, 1703 Mail Service Center, Raleigh, N.C. 27699-1703; or call

(919)707-0101.

Your purchase of fishing equipment and

Municipal water supply reservoirs or city lakes are important waterresources in North Carolina’s central Piedmont region. Often, thesewaters are located in densely populated areas and are used extensivelyfor sport fishing. Fishery biologists with the N.C. Wildlife ResourcesCommission created this brochure to provide anglers with informationabout fishing in these waters. The lakes are located in a 21-county area(See map on opposite page.) Upon request, the Commission providesfishery management assistance to city governments that fall withinthis area.

To improve fishing opportunities in these waters, Commissionbiologists conduct fish-population surveys and creel surveys, stockhatchery-reared fish and implement measures to control nuisanceaquatic vegetation. They cooperate with municipalities to install fishattractors and /or cut-and-cabled trees to congregate fish and providecover for fish. Information gathered from these and similar activitiesover extended periods of time provides the basis for making fisherymanagement decisions, including selecting and evaluating size andcreel limits and stocking forage and game fishes.

The lakes are listed alphabetically by county with information ontheir locations, sizes, fisheries, hours of operation and other infor-mation, where applicable. A guide to available facilities at each lakeis located near the middle of the brochure. Please note that every ef-fort has been made to provide up-to-date information on each lake. However, changes in designated uses, operating hours and facilitiesdo occur. We advise anglers to contact the owner of a lake to ensurechanges have not been made since this brochure was printed.
