The Holy Spirit of Promise

…after that ye believed, ye were sealed with that holy Spirit of promise, Which is the earnest of our inheritance until the redemption of the purchased possession, unto the praise of his glory (Ephesians 1:13b-14).

In order to be a confident and victorious Christian, one must rest in the absolute trustworthiness of God’s promises. In Ephesians chapter 1, Paul states that upon

salvation, we are sealed with that holy Spirit of promise. He then explains that this blessing is the earnest of our inheritance. Earnest money is a smaller sum given prior to completion of a transaction as evidence of the intent to pay the full sum at a later date, usually when some other aspect of the transaction is completed. The same is true here. God has given us this Holy Spirit of promise whereby we can, as John teaches, know that ye have eternal life. If you know this as a fact, based on utter and complete trust in the Lord, you will be mightily used to the increase of God’s kingdom. This is an integral part of salvation. Once saved, we are sealed; we can move forward in hope of eternal life, which God, that cannot lie, promised before the world began (Titus 1:2).

Further in Ephesians 1, Paul prays that the church members at Ephesus would be given the spirit of wisdom and revelation in the knowledge of Him. As we are given awareness of our security in salvation, we then have a ministry to other believers that follow us. As Paul did, we may pray for other believers that the eyes of their understanding may be enlightened. Rather than complaining, criticizing and backbiting, we should pray to this end: that our fellow believers may, through this aspect of God’s Spirit, know the hope of His calling, the riches of the glory of His inheritance in the saints, and what is the exceeding greatness of His power to us-ward who believe, according to the working of His mighty power, Which He wrought in Christ...

John said, ye have an unction from the Holy One and ye know all things. This, coupled with Paul’s teaching mentioned above, gives us strong incentive to pray for each other. If we do, and other believers are, as a result, tapped into God’s perfect understanding of all things, how much more unified and effective our assemblies will be.

Are you praying that your brothers and sisters would have this enlightened understanding? - Brad Baldwin

How to Serve the LordJudges 3:5-11

Message by Dr. Caswell A. Reeves

Othniel is the first judge over Israel that followed the death of Joshua. His name means “the lion of God.” We are told very little about Othniel, but his life does teach us how to serve the Lord with success. The elements of successful service are:

I. He was faithful

A. The Lord chose him for service

B. Hebrews 11:6: Without faith it is impossible to please the Lord

II. He was Spirit-controlled (vs. 10)

A. The Holy Spirit is an empowering force = to success

B. Acts 2; 1 Thesssalonians 5:19; Ephesians 5:18

III. He was a “doer” (vs. 10)

A. He judged

B. He went out to war

C. He defeated Debir and won Achsah (1:13)

IV. He was pure (vs. 6-7)

A. Separated unto his own (1:13)

B. Separated from his enemy (vs. 6-7)

Remember Othniel; Serve with success!
