PRAYER FOR A NEW BISHOP
God our Father,
In Jesus, your Son, You have given to your
Church the perfect model of priest, prophet and
king, and so You have blessed us through His
sacrifice, taught us through His Word, and guided
us through His rule.
We thank You for the previous bishops who have
cared for the people of the Diocese of Duluth.
We ask You, Father, to guide and enlighten those
who will be tasked with helping to choose the next
bishop of our diocese. May the man they choose
be a man of deep and true prayer, a man of
compassionate heart and firm resolve, and a man of
joy and peace, who desires above all to do Your will.
We entrust our prayers to our Patroness, Mary,
Queen of the Rosary, and ask this through Jesus
Christ our Lord. Amen.

Family Faith Formation We meet next Wednesday, February 5 at 6 pm. We will start with dinner at 6 pm, followed by classes at 6:30 pm. For the Adult Faith Formation, Fr. Steve will continue his series on the sacraments. Everyone is welcome to join us.
Bible Study The Bible Study group meets Sunday evenings at 6 pm in the Social Hall. We are currently studying the Gospel of Matthew. We have extra material available and would love to have new members! Come check it out!
Friday Youth Bible Study for All Ages Join us Friday mornings at 9 am. Our study will be focusing on the readings for the upcoming weekend. Parents are welcome to join us too. If you have questions, contact Cindy at 220-1582 or Jeff at 220-9720.
KC Pancake Breakfast The Knights of Columbus will serve their famous pancake breakfast after Mass next Sunday, February 9. Please join us for great fellowship & delicious pancakes. Free will donation.
Looking for a way to grow in your faith? Join us this Wednesday, February 5 at 6 pm for dinner & fellowship, followed by class at 6:30 pm. Meet new people and grow in your faith. Child care is available.

We couldn’t have done it without everyone's help, whether you purchased tickets or offered your time baking, serving or cleaning up after the meal. It was awesome to see the kids and adults having fun, working together to get everything done.
Share Your God Given Talents - Building & Grounds We are looking for individuals who can help around the parish with light maintenance jobs such as small repairs or projects, replacing light bulbs in the church, general weekly walk throughs, and building security (locking up). We currently have just a couple individuals who take on the lion’s share of this work, and we would like to increase the number of volunteers to help make it a lighter load for all, plus give others who are interested the opportunity to share their talents. If this is something you’d like to help with, please call the parish office to let us know.

Eucharistic Adoration
Eucharistic Adoration is every Wednesday 9 am - 3 pm. All are invited to stop in to spend some time with the Lord in prayer. For those who can devote an hour, we have a sign-up sheet in the back of the church to assure that there is always someone in attendance during the time of Exposition.
From the Desk of Father Steve: Centering Our Lives on the Holy Mass - Part XVIII

After the conclusion of the homily at Sunday Mass, the priest or deacon who has preached sits down, and should observe a brief period of silence so that the words that have been proclaimed and preached can have an opportunity to “sink in,” and work their way into our hearts and minds. Then the priest and the people stand, and he leads the people in reciting the Profession of Faith, or the “Creed.”
The word “creed” comes from a Latin word, the first word of the profession of faith, “credo” which means, “I believe.” A Creed is a summary statement of the faith that can be easily memorized and proclaimed by the people. The Nicene Creed, which we typically recite on Sundays and Holy days of obligation, is so named because it derives originally from the conclusion of a Church council (meeting of the world’s bishops) in 325 AD called the Council of Nicaea. This Council had to meet in order to denounce a heretical idea that had become popular among Christian clergy and people alike that Jesus is the Son of God the Father, but that He is not equal to God the Father- He is not eternal, but rather He was created by God the Father. The Council of Nicaea totally rejected this idea, reaffirming the Church’s teaching that Jesus Christ is the Son of God the Father and God Himself. The Creed as we know it now was polished and finalized at the Council of Constantinople in 381 AD. Just think of that- Christians have been reciting the exact same Creed that we recite every Sunday at Mass for over 1,600 years! That’s quite remarkable! And here, I would like to remind us of the need to be particularly careful not to allow our recitation of the Creed at Mass to be carried out in a robotic way, on “auto-pilot.” That is certainly a temptation, and it can be very easy to do without realizing it since we say the same words every Sunday. But the Profession of Faith, the Creed, is a very important part of the Mass. In professing our faith, we are taking a stand. We are proclaiming publicly, out loud, to the world around us, the tenets of what we believe and hold dear. Sure, there is some complex theological language in certain parts of the Creed, but they are all critical to who we are as Catholic Christians. As best we can, we should try to recite the Creed with attention, focus and even fervor, as we are standing in the tradition of 2,000 years of the faith being passed down from the Apostles of our Lord Jesus to us, here on the North Shore in the year 2020. Men and women have been executed while having tenets of the Creed on their lips- they have shed their blood for the beliefs that we claim as our own each time we recite the Creed. Hopefully, remembering this can assist us in remembering how dear and important the Creed is to us. In closing, let me quote from the instruction book that the priest should reference when preparing to celebrate Mass, the General Instruction of the Roman Missal. Referring to the Creed, it says this: “The purpose of the Creed or Profession of faith is that the whole gathered people may respond to the Word of God proclaimed in the readings taken from Sacred Scripture and explained in the homily and that they may also honor and confess the great mysteries of the faith by pronouncing the rule of faith in a formula approved for liturgical use and before the celebration of these mysteries in the Eucharist begins” (GIRM, #67). In other words, the Creed forms a sort of “bridge” between the two halves of the Mass. It is recited at the conclusion of the Liturgy of the Word, and so the people gathered, having heard God’s holy Word, now profess their faith and belief in that Word. And, it is also recited right before the celebration of the Eucharist begins, as a way of preparing ourselves for the Eucharist- we state what we believe before we act on our faith and receive the Sacrament. Notice too that there is a recitation of the Profession of Faith before the two other sacraments of initiation- baptism and confirmation. In both cases the celebrant requires those who are to receive the sacrament (or their parents in the case of infant baptism) to profess their faith before the sacrament is received.

Coffee Social (with special guests)
Our regular monthly coffee social will be after the
11:00 Mass TODAY, Feb. 2nd. We will be joined by
students and administrators of Mater Dei, the new
Catholic High School alternative in Duluth. They will
do a very brief introduction of their mission and be
available to answer any questions.
Pasty Sign Ups
Pasties are being made next Saturday, Feb. 8th, so
make sure to sign up this weekend to reserve some for
your household. This has continued to be an excellent
fundraiser for our building project and even the
extras get sold before the next month.
Pivotal Players Bible Study
This week will be on G.K. Chesterton, next week’s last
session will be about St. John Henry Newman. We
meet on Sundays at 3 pm. Sessions are not dependent
on one another and there is no homework.
Mom’s Night—Defending the Faith
When do we defend the faith and when is it better to
stay silent? If we do speak, what should we say? This
is a topic that has come up several times in our meet-
ings and is not only practical for us as adults, but also
as parents trying to teach our kids. Grace Woitalla,
Director of Catechesis for the Diocese and Director of
Religious Ed. grades 6-12 at St. Benedict parish, will
share what she has learned in her studies and guide
us in a conversation to help us gain confidence in this
area on Sunday, Feb. 9th from 6—7:30 pm.

Men of Faith – Men on Fire
The Men of Faith conference is scheduled for
Saturday, Feb. 29th at Marshall School. Deacon Harold
Burke-Sivers, our featured speaker, is dedicated to
spreading the knowledge, love and practice of the
Roman Catholic faith. Deacon Harold is known as the
“Dynamic Deacon” throughout the world and is co-
host for radio shows “Morning Glory” on ETWN and
“Living Stones” on Mater Dei Radio. He is author of
the book, Behold the Man: A Catholic Vision of Male
Spirituality. Registration fee is $30 per person through
February 17th. Clergy, male youth ministers and
Catholic school teachers are free of charge. A link to

Women of Faith Conference—Worthy
Join other women for a day of faith, fun, and
fellowship on March 28th at Marshall School. This
year’s speaker, Deby Sansone Schlapprizzi, is a
nationally acclaimed motivational speaker, television
contributor, radio host and life activist. She will help
you unveil your God-given splendor and lead you on
a journey of transformation. Drawing from her
profound faith and deep spirituality, as well as many
years ministering to women, Deby gently urges you
to shift your perspective and draw closer to Our Lord
in order to recognize and embrace your magnificence
-- so that, at last, you can delight in the freedom and
fullness of who you were created to be from the very
beginning. Cost: $30 includes light breakfast, lunch,
snack, and materials (*$10 late fee added after March
