The Neversink Valley Museum is a private, non-profit organization occupying historic canal-era buildings in the D&H Canal Park on the Neversink River in Cuddebackville, NY. In addition to exhibitions, the museum provides educational programming for children and adults throughout the year. It’s a National Historic Landmark and is chartered by the New York State Education Department.

NVM’s educational programs actively engage students. For example, students use Lenape tools to learn how they produced food. Or, during a visit to the former D&H Canal, students walk along the towpath and search for coal. In keeping with our early film mission, students create their own movie, from script development to finished feature.

Our programs fulfill New York State curriculum requirements and can be adapted for any grade level:

A Day in a Lenape Village demonstrates aspects of daily life among the Lenape. This program offers a glimpse of how Lenape families raised children and carried on traditions and beliefs, meals were grown, hunted and prepared, tools were made, celebration of important events and more.

Journey along the D&H The D&H Canal played a major part in the development of Port Jervis, Cuddebackville, Wurtsboro and Ellenville, to name a few. Our program takes students along the towpath and into the museum to demonstrate how a canal is constructed and operates, as well as tells the story of the people, often immigrants, who built and lived along its banks.

iMovie Workshop leads participants through the filmmaking process using either an iPad or a smartphone. Students develop original characters, write a script, draw a storyboard, direct and act in their own production. This is a multi-day program – for more details, please contact us.

For information on all of our educational programming or museum hours, visit our website at http://neversinkmuseum.org, call 845-754-8870 or email [email protected].

Westmoreland Sanctuary was established in 1957 as a not-for-profit nature center

and wildlife preserve with the mission to “acquire, establish and maintain for the free

use, enjoyment and appreciation of the public. . . tracts of land, including woodland

and streams, as a nature sanctuary . . . to promote nature appreciation, preservation

and conservation generally, for the present and future benefit and enjoyment of the

public.” Westmoreland also offers a variety of environmental education, conservation

and recreational programs and events both public and private. Through these

facilities and programs Westmoreland encourages a deeper understanding and

engagement with nature and our environment.

Many of Westmoreland’s school programs have been specifically designed to enrich

and support the New York State curriculum. Our programs help encourage students

by giving an experiential learning environment. Certain times of year can become

competitive for programming space, to ensure you receive the time and date that

works best for you, please give us three months advance notice. Fall and spring

are our busiest times of year for educational programming. All Westmoreland

Sanctuary classes are taught by trained naturalists with over 30 years experience.

Weather permitting, some class sessions will be held outside; students should

dress accordingly. It is recommended that groups call in September to arrange their

trips for the entire school year. Contact 914-666-8448 or email Stephen Sciame,

Education Director at [email protected]

The Sanctuary’s nature museum and wildlife preserve are open for visitation daily.

The nature museum hours are 9:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m. Monday through Saturday and

10:30 a.m – 5:00 p.m. on Sunday. The preserve is open daily from dawn to dusk.

Westmoreland Sanctuary is located at

260 Chestnut Ridge Road, Mount Kisco, NY 10549.

Walt Whitman BirthplaceNYS Historic Site and Interpretive Center

THE BIRTHPLACE: Walt Whitman was born in this house on May 31, 1819. Built by his father circa 1810, the authentically furnished farmhouse is an excellent example of native Long Island craftsmanship.

THE INTERPRETIVE CENTER: This center displays over 130 portraits of Walt Whitman, a copy of Leaves of Grass, the writing desk Whitman used as a schoolteacher and a replica printing press used during

his journalism career. Also offered is a video and a recording of the poet reading his poem America.

SCHOOL PROGRAMS: All programs support NYS Regents Social Studies and Language Arts curriculum. Both “Create and Explore” (Grades 3 – 8) and “Secondary Education Experience” (Grades 9 – 12) offer grade-appropriate programs that include poetry writing workshops taught by a published Poet and tours, led by a knowledgeable Educator. During “See and Touch” (Grades Pre-K – 2) students tour the home in which Whitman was born and learn what life was like in 1819. They also have fun while playing interactive historic games. Fees: $7.50 - $9.00/student.

Miller Symphony Hall, home of the Allentown Symphony Orchestra, is the premier performing arts facility in Allentown. From rock to jazz and theatre to dance, the hall hosts more than just performances of the symphony orchestra. A landmark in the city of Allentown, this historic facility is available for rentals whether it is birthdays, weddings, business meetings, concerts, or recitals as well as presenting family theatre shows and concerts. This coming year, we are excited to announce the second year of FREE STUDENT TICKETS for Allentown Symphony Orchestra Pops and Classical concerts thanks to a generous grant from the Century Fund. To reserve tickets, you can call our box office at 610-432-6715.

Symphony Hall is not just for entertaining, but also provides the community with numerous educational and outreach activities. Young string musicians in grades 4-8 can be recommended by a music teacher to take part in our Young Musician String Festival each November, performing on stage at Symphony Hall and under the baton of Maestra Diane Wittry. The Allentown Symphony Instrumental Petting Zoo makes regular appearances at community events, local schools and the ASO Family Concert. The Instrumental Petting Zoo provides a “hands-on” introduction to a variety of musical instruments with a “zookeeper” who explains and guides each instrument’s use. For more advanced young musicians, also part of the ASO educational programming is the Schadt Summer String Scholarships and the Voorhees Concerto Competition. Both are competitions for students up to age 18, which takes place on stage at Miller Symphony Hall for a panel of esteemed judges each spring. Winners of the Schadt Summer String Scholarships can win up to $500 towards their music summer camp tuition. The winner of the Voorhees Concerto Competition wins a cash prize of $1,000 and future performance opportunities.

The main event for youth and families taking place each year is the Allentown Symphony Orchestra Youth Concert. With four performances during the school day and one on Saturday, the Youth Concert is a fun and engaging experience for students, teachers, and families to experience Symphony Hall and hear, what is often their first, symphony orchestra performance. This year’s concert Once Upon an Orchestra: Musical Fairy Tales, will show how music can tell a story. With pieces such as Sleeping Beauty by Tchaikovsky, Nielsen’s Aladdin Overture, and Ravel’s Mother Goose, the music will shape images of the fairy tales we read as children. This year’s concerts will take place Thursday, February 18 and Monday, February 22 at 10am & 12pm for school groups. Tickets are $6 for students and extra chaperones. Each group receives one free chaperone ticket per every 10 students. For more information or to reserve a spot at this year’s youth concert, please contact Stephanie Kocher, Education Director at [email protected] or 610-432-7961 x206.

HagleyWelcomes Homeschoolers

Hagley Museum is the former industrial site of the original black powder works

of the DuPont Company founded in Delaware in 1802 and powered by the

natural resources that surrounded it. Today it is 235 acres of wooded rolling

hills along the rushing Brandywine River dotted with hundreds of stone ruins

of the black powder industry, dozens of restored buildings associated with the

business, and the ancestral home and gardens of the du Pont family in America.

Here, for over 200 years, the DuPont Company and family experimented,

innovated, and pursued the American dream.

For decades Hagley has been welcoming school children throughout the year

to participate in hands-on, experiential learning through a variety of science,

technology and history programs for students from kindergarten to high

school. At Hagley, students will satisfy their “STEM-tation!” through interactive

programs that emphasize the engineering of water power, simple machines

making work easier, and materials and their physical properties. Through

“Hands-on History” programs students will experience nineteenth-century

life and the Industrial Revolution while understanding their impacts on today’s

world.

Joan Hoge-North, Director of Museum Services at Hagley understands first-

hand the value of the homeschool education model, “My three nieces were

homeschooled and had a remarkable experience. I saw that one of the greatest

benefits of the model was the option to customize the learning for the girls

and the freedom to expose them to so many experiences through numerous

field trips—many more than traditional schools can afford.” Hagley offers

seven different programs that all involve getting kids active and out-of-doors,

introducing them to historical characters and challenging them with hands-on

activities and experiments. All of Hagley’s school programs are available to

homeschool groups.

Visit www.hagley.org/education for detailed information or call Jeff Durst,

Education Program Manager at 302-658-2400, ext. 258.

To many, a small city in Western Maryland

would seem an unlikely place to find a

professional symphony orchestra. However,

over 30 years ago a group of Washington

County music lovers bravely launched

a new, untested musical endeavor. On

November 13, 1982, under the leadership

of acclaimed horn player Barry Tuckwell,

the Maryland Symphony Orchestra made its Hagerstown, Maryland debut to

a packed house at the historic Maryland Theatre.

Since its founding, the MSO’s influence and reputation has reached far

beyond Western Maryland. It is one of only four professional symphony

orchestras in Maryland and audience members from South Central

Pennsylvania, West Virginia’s Eastern Panhandle, the Shenandoah Valley

of Virginia, and the Baltimore-Washington Metropolitan Area are drawn to

concerts. Now under the baton of Music Director Elizabeth Schulze, the

MSO has become a first-class orchestra of exceptional artistic quality.

Each season the MSO provides a variety of programs: five pairs of

Masterworks concerts featuring world-renowned guest artists, two Pops

concerts (popular music from Broadway and the movies, rock, jazz, and

country), and the very popular Home for the Holidays concerts.

Music education has been a core mission of the Maryland Symphony

Orchestra from the very beginning. Since that time, the musicians, staff,

and music director have worked tirelessly, along with community partners, to

develop programs for area students that complement and enhance the music

curriculum available in their schools. For more information about specific

education programs, check out www.marylandsymphony.org/education.

A music education initiative of which we are most proud is the Free

Student Ticket program. Through the generosity of personal and corporate

donations, we are able to offer students in grades K-12 (public, private or

home-schooled) free tickets to all Masterworks concerts throughout the

season. For tickets, call the MSO Box Office at 301-797-4000, ext. 101. For

season information, www.marylandsymphony.org

Science Museum of Virginia Harnesses the Power of the Stars

The mission of the Science Museum of Virginia is to inspire Virginians to enrich

their lives through science. Through hundreds of experiential exhibits and interactive

technologies, the Museum sparks curiosity and generates ideas in science,

technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM). With three floors of permanent

exhibits about space, health and energy– to name a few – the Museum connects

science to our daily lives and encourages guests to question their world.

Harnessing the power of the stars inside of The Dome, the Museum presents

dynamic astronomy programming on the largest screen in Virginia. Live Cosmic

Expeditions depart daily from the five-story digital dome theater, combining an

astronomy feature with a custom astronomer-led exploration of the universe. Guests

can unravel the secrets of the Sun, glimpse exploding stars, take a wild ride through

magnetic storms and uncover the beauty of the cosmos.

Each month the Museum lights up the night with science during Science After Dark,

an evening event held on the third Friday featuring live astronomy in The Dome,

hands-on activities and the opportunity to stargaze through telescopes with the

Richmond Astronomical Society.

The Dome at the Science Museum of Virginia also shows Giant Screen Movies

with stunning clarity and brilliance – with definition ten times the power of a

home theater system. Guests can embark on amazing adventures to reveal the

hidden world Humpback Whales and migrate across North America with Monarch

Butterflies– all without leaving their seats.

The Museum offers captivating live science demonstrations, from dissecting cow

eyes and creating breathtaking chemical reactions to theatrical productions about

Shakespeare and Galileo. With innovative programs and offerings, the Museum is a

catalyst for inspiration and imagination. It is a connector between Richmond and

the world, the world and the cosmos, and most importantly, between guests and the

power of science.

The Airborne & Special Operations Museum provides an exciting educational experience and preserves the legend of airborne and special operations forces.

Visitors learn how the 48 volunteer members of the U.S. Army Test Platoon proved that soldiers could land on the battlefield by parachute and carry out tactical missions. The story is told of how, in the summer of 1940, the platoon developed training methods and tactical concepts that remain valid to this day, and in three years, the work of the fifty volunteers grew to a force of tens of thousands.

The museum presents the story of the genesis of airborne and special operations forces and their intertwined evolvement over the past six decades. From their inception, American airborne and special operations forces have continued to make dramatic and lasting contributions to our national security. Visitors learn how these remarkable soldiers carried out missions of classic strategic and tactical significance behind enemy lines. Time after time the heroic efforts of these airborne units were responsible for turning the tide of history, and those efforts are recounted at the museum.

The museum serves as a premier educational medium for active-duty personnel, their families, veterans and civilians of all ages. It serves Fort Bragg, Fayetteville, Cumberland County, North Carolina, and the entire country. The museum preserves and interprets the unique heritage of airborne and special operations forces for future generations, ensuring that “the legend continues.”

The extensive exhibits, large-screen theater production and motion simulator provide an opportunity for visitors to experience the legend. The museum provides special programming to enhance the curriculum of school children, emphasizing values education, and presents targeted educational programs developed for active-duty military personnel.

The museum incorporates core values as part of its educational program, teaching how personal actions and character have direct impact on the course of our society and our world. The museum allows us to realize that history is not something that happened to someone else a long time ago -- it is the story of who we are right now and why we, as Americans, are able to enjoy liberty and freedom.

The Airborne & Special Operations Museum, located in Fayetteville, NC, is part of the U.S. Army Museum System.

Take a 19th Century Florida Adventure at Tampa’s Only Outdoor

Living History Museum!

Cracker Country is a living history museum located on the Florida State Fairgrounds in Tampa. Named after the cracking whips of Florida’s pioneer cowmen, the museum is dedicated to the preservation and interpretation of rural life in Florida in the late 19th century.

Cracker Country was established in 1978 by Mildred W. and Doyle E. Carlton, Jr. Thirteen original structures, built between 1870-1912 were relocated from around the state, restored and furnished to represent various aspects of home life, commerce and transportation as it was in many rural Florida communities just before the turn of the 20th century.

The centerpiece of Cracker Country is the Carlton House, a two-story structure with a distinctive dogtrot hallway that was the boyhood home of Doyle E. Carlton, the governor of Florida during the Great Depression.

Cracker Country is open every day during the annual Florida State Fair, and throughout the spring and fall by reservation for field trips and group tours. In addition, the museum offers two Homeschool Days annually. All of our programs and events feature hands-on activities to help young learners experience a little bit of the life of pioneer Floridians. Come visit during our autumn events:

www.americanvillage.org.

Each day during the school year, hundreds of K-12 students converge on the 183-acre American Village campus located in Montevallo in Shelby County, Alabama. They step onto the stage of American history with a talented and passionate staff and explore the ideals of American liberty and self-government. Students are fully engaged and captivated as they experience the drama and uncertainty that existed when the “past” was the “present.”

On a typical day, one can see students taking risks in colonial Boston, preparing to debate Patrick Henry’s Virginia resolves for independence, enthusiastically drilling in Washington’s Army at Yorktown, and serving as delegates to the Constitutional Convention at Philadelphia.

Consistently teachers tell us this is the best field trip experience they have encountered in their years of teaching. Students rave about the experience; many of our historical interpreters get “fan mail.” Parents also praise our programs. They are struck by the authenticity with which our staff portrays people of the past; and they are brought into the action – right into the heart of the historical vignette – as if they were there. The American Village campus is distinctive, believed to be the first campus in the Nation of its type, size, design, and scope to be constructed for the express purpose of civic and leadership education.

Although these facilities play a key role in presenting these ideas and stories, the American Village campus is not about its buildings. It is instead about building in the hearts and minds of students -- young and old -- a sense of stewardship of what George Washington called “the sacred fire of liberty.”

The American Village is open M-F 10-4, closed Saturdays and Sundays (check our web site for holidays and other closings).

Memories RevisitedHower House, a stately Victorian mansion built in 1871, has had plenty of time to amass some serious memories and mementos. It has strong ties to Akron’s history, architecturally as well as through accomplishments of its founding family starting with John Henry and Susan Youngker Hower.

The Howers came to Akron in 1865 on the heels of the Civil War where they hoped to expand on their fortunes after operating Doylestown, Ohio for many years. Hower and John F. Seiberling moved the Excelsior Mower and Reaper business to Akron and built the first large-scale manufacturing facility thus giving Hower the enviable title of “Father of Akron Industry.” His business savvy positioned him to commence a long history in Akron for himself and sons, Harvey, Milton Otis and Charles on what was then the northern edge of this rapidly-expanding city.

A well-established local architect, Jacob Snyder, was hired to design the 28-room mansion for the Howers based on the “Akron Plan” a unique auditorium-style floor plan used in the burgeoning Sunday School movement that gained a foothold in the late 1800s. The first floor of the Hower House reflects this in its circular center hall.

Three generations of the Hower family lived in the Mansion for over 100 years. What remains from the wealth, taste, and extensive travels of three generations of this extraordinary family is a wonderful historic house museum, filled with treasures collected from around the world.

Since opening in the mid-1980s, the Hower House Museum has become an important educational resource for architecture, the history of decorative arts, interior design and Victorian culture. Open eleven months a year, the museum offers a robust schedule of exhibits, programs, tours for all ages, and a unique venue for corporate gatherings, weddings, and other special occasions.

Check the Hower House website for events and details: www.howerhouse.org.
