Hacktavism: Friend or FoeStoryboard

Andrew Wells

Opening Sequence: 1Act 1

Hook: “…After September 11, the national debate on the security of cyberspace has intensified. It has negatively influenced movements that rely on hacking, or other anti-hegemonic forms of Internet use, such as free access, open source, or privacy protection. Hackers and online political activists are now forced to defend themselves against being labeled by the authorities as cyberterrorists….” Type writing effect: Green font- Appears like

Anon. Takes on Anti-Internet Freedom

Narrator: Powerful enough to take down SOPA or PIPA? B- roll – Image zoom-in on 3d Model of: SOPA & PIPA

Narrator: SOPA and PIPA are designed to crack down on websites based offshore that peddle illegal content  — think pirated Hollywood blockbusters and fake Viagra. No one disputes that that’s a worthy goal. The rub is whether it would give the government and copyright holders too much control over the Web

Protest Big Win

Wednesday 18 January marked the largest online protest in the history of the internet. Websites from large to small "went dark" in protest of proposed legislation before the US House and Senate that could profoundly change the internet. The two bills, Sopa in the House and Pipa in the Senate, ostensibly aim to stop the piracy of copyrighted material over the internet on websites based outside the US. Critics – among them, the founders of Google, Wikipedia, the Internet Archive, Tumblr and Twitter – counter that the laws will stifle innovation and investment, hallmarks of the free, open internet.

Effect of Black out

Several major websites, including Wikipedia, Reddit and TwitPic, said they would “go dark” on Wednesday to show their opposition to the two bills in Congress.

Act 3: Arrest of LulzSec

Lulzsec Down Act 3

Narrator: Monsegur was portrayed in court papers as the

ringleader, a legendary figure known in the hacking underworld as "Sabu." Authorities said he formed an elite hacking organization last May and named it "Lulz Security" or "LulzSec."

Some alleged associates of the group are already facing charges elsewhere. An English teenager, Ryan Cleary, was arrested by the British in June. In July, a reputed LulzSec spokesman, Jake Davis, was arrested in Scotland.
