    NEW YEAR, NEW YOU!

    ?

  • 3

In December, I was asked to help out at the opening of Menno Haven’s new Rehabilitation Center -- thanking residents and visitors for touring and offering a small take-away gift bag which had goodies and information about Menno Haven’s Capital Campaign. During those two days, I witnessed over 700 visitors enjoy the beauty and excitement of this new center.

"I saw many smiling faces and heard many compliments on the new building, and more generally, on Menno Haven - the community that I call home.It was a wonderful time!"In the past year, I have gotten involved in our community and it has been very rewarding. I am a member of the “Nurturing the Human Spirit” Capital Campaign Communications Committee, which basically helps to bring understanding to our residents about Project GENESIS, as well as the campaign to raise funds to assist with Project GENESIS.

In my work on this committee, in March of 2018 I wrote my first article for the Haven Connect. This article introduced the “Get in the Know” Gatherings to you. Along with Paula Warner, we began to coordinate small group gatherings throughout Menno Haven to help other residents get the facts on Menno Haven and Project GENESIS.

“Get in the Know” Gatherings meet at residents’ homes throughout Menno Haven. Each gathering is comprised of 6 to 12 residents, a host and a Menno Haven Executive. A brief presentation on the plans and progress of Project GENESIS initiatives is presented and then residents have the opportunity to ask any questions they might have about Menno Haven’s plans.

Throughout 2018, 22 small gatherings were hosted in resident homes across Chambers Pointe and Brookview. In 2019 we look forward to inviting our remaining residents to attend and participate in a gathering, which means it’s going to be a busy year! All independent living and personal care residents will receive an invitation to join a gathering.

    GET IN THE KNOWCOMMUNITY GATHERINGS

by: Karen Motyka, Resident Volunteer? The Menno Haven Rehabilitation Center, which opened in December, marked the completion of our first Project GENESIS building. There are three additional projects underway which are part of Project GENESIS and the Capital Campaign – a new Health Care Center, which will replace the Brookview Nursing Center, a new Resident Life Center, and two new Memory Care Houses. I hope you are excited about all this year has to offer, because we still have much to learn and celebrate!

Would you like to learn to drive a horse-drawn carriage? Starting April 14, the Franklin County 4-H Therapeutic Riding Center is offering lessons for seniors to do just that. There are neither age nor residence limitations, but there are four requirements: Your doctor must affirm that you are physically able to do this. You will never be alone in the “carriage”, and it is designed to allow you to drive from your wheelchair; You have transportation to get to and from the Center, on Franklin Farms Lane; You can pay a $25 fee per lesson; You complete an application to join the program. We anticipate starting with about four learners meeting weekly for four weeks. Understand this is not “therapy” covered by any insurance program. It is purely for pleasure and self satisfaction. To learn more about the program and to meet the instructor, Morgan Shadle, come to the Northgate Chinaberry Room on Monday, February 18 at 10AM. Applications will be available at this meeting. If you can’t make this meeting, call Bill Fasnacht (717) 264-6332 for information.

Attention city slickers! You don’t need to have any farm experience to enjoy the PA Farm Show. There is something for everyone. Food, crafts, horses, pigs, food, chickens, and did I mention milkshakes. If for no other reason, go for the milkshakes! But there are plenty of reasons to go. One is that you will see the largest horses ever. A beautiful draft horse was said to be 19 hands tall - over 6 feet just to his shoulders! And most importantly, you will come away with a heightened appreciation for all the very hard work that goes into feeding us. A truly amazing experience.

Recycling tip of the month: Keep your worn out sneakers. We will collect them with our next medications collection in April. We collected two 33-gallon trash bags in October. A few good pairs were donated to the Treasure Chest for resale and the rest went to the Nike Store in Hagerstown for shredding to be used for new sneakers.

Solar power: The Green Team is discussing the possibility of putting solar panels on some of the new buildings. We are looking at the cost and the payback time. The major factor is the initial cost, so we are investigating funding sources to help defray some of the initial cost. Unfortunately, we cannot get the 30% federal tax break rebate because Menno Haven does not pay federal taxes.

GREEN TEAM NEWSSaving energy, or are you?: This is the second of four articles about saving energy. This month’s topic is energy used by lights. For lights, the rule of thumb is a light that is on all the time (24 hours a day, 365 days a year) costs $1 per Watt. If you have window lights that have 5W bulbs, the cost is $5 per year for each light. If a light is on at regular intervals, say 8 hours a day, then the annual cost is a third of that above. A 60 Watt incandescent bulb on for 8 hours a day costs $60/3 = $20 a year.

The first action to take to reduce energy use from lights is to replace all incandescent bulbs with CFL or LED bulbs. An office at Menno Haven had an incandescent 100W light bulb on 24/365. Replacing this with a 26W CFL is saving Menno Haven $65 a year. Replacing a 60W incandescent bulb that is on 8 hours a day with an 11W LED bulb saves about $15 a year. Both LED and CFL bulbs use about one-fifth to one-sixth the energy of an incandescent bulb; generally LEDs are more efficient. Plus, the LED does not have a disposal problem (CFL bulbs contain mercury and should not be discarded on the trash).

Of course, the best way to save energy for lighting is to turn off lights that are not needed! Even a CFL or LED bulb on for an extra 6 hours a day costs an extra $2.50 a year.

    February 2019Banking Done Your Way

Investment & Trust ServicesValentine’s Day. A time for hearts, flowers,

candy, and sometimes even jewelry. It's a time to reflect on those we care about and show them how we feel.

Often times we would like to provide for the future of our spouse, children, grandchildren, or a family member with special needs, but we do not know how.

When properly crafted and maintained, a trust can provide financial security for years to come. Trusts can be tailored to the unique terms and needs of every situation. They can be funded during your lifetime or through your will and can be directed to provide for your loved ones in numerous ways. Trusts are often created to provide educational funds for children, grandchildren or even to support the financial needs of a handicapped individual. Trusts can also be used to provide security for a spouse in the event of a partner's passing. Our professionals at F&M Trust are here to help determine if a trust may be right for your current situation and future financial goals. If you would like more information regarding trusts, please contact any of our commu-nity offices or speak with a member of our Investment & Trust Services Department at 717.261.3569.

    Northgate Visits

Please note that all F&M Trust Offices will be closed on Monday, February 18th

    in observance of President's Day.

    Holiday Closing

F&M Trust representatives will be onsite to answer your questions on every 2nd and 4th Tuesday of the month. Stop by any time between 11:00-12:30 P.M and say hello!
