There will be too much to read all at once, but you do need toread the parts that apply to you. Think about the followingthings when you are finding the information you need.
3 When you find the part you need, read carefully
to fully understand whatit says.
The standards of behaviour expected may bein a handbook with a title . The staff manualcontains information about the policies andprocedures of the company you work for.
The handbook may be divided intonumbered sections . Policies tell you about the rules for
the company. Procedures tell you how the rules

Policies and codes of practice are important work documents that help you
to do your job better and protect you and your colleagues and clients. Thepolicies you are asked to read at work can be long and complicated.Reading strategies can help you to find particular information quickly.
This helps you to find the partof the text you need to read.

Your eyes might pick outand read:

When you read to get the gist ,or general idea of whatsomething is about, your eyesskim across the page.
Your eyes often pick out the
things that stand out or lookdifferent.
This is a bit like looking over acrowd to get an idea of agegroup, sex and number.
The words you scan for willdepend on what you want toknow. For example, if you wantinformation on your employersduties, you would scan the text
for related words such asemployer.
Sometimes you know what sortof information you are looking
for. You can search the text
quickly for relevant words or phrases.

The wall sign tells you what you should and should notuse the fire extinguisher for.

How to use it

A risky businessEmployers carry out formal safety checks to identify safetyrisks in the workplace. You should also carry out checks for
yourself every time you start a job.
There are three main steps for checking safety.
Focus

HygieneOne of your responsibilities is to minimise the possible
spread of infection or disease in the salon. One way to dothis is to keep yourself and everything in the salon clean.
You may need to follow the guidelines from your employer.
Focus
CLEANING AND HYGIENE PROCEDURES
Wash all surfaces within the salon, includingreception, stock preparation and staff areas, withhot water and detergent every day. If there is a
high risk of contamination to a surface, wipe itover with a spirit-based antiseptic and allow todry naturally.
Clean mirrors daily with warm water anddetergent or a spirit-based cleaner.
Each client must have a fresh, clean towel andgown. Soiled gowns and towels must be placed in the
bins provided. Towels and gowns must be washed and dried,
following the instructions on the machine. Wash all equipment such as combs, brushes and
curlers in hot water and detergent after eachclient.
Sterilise or disinfect equipment if it has come intocontact with cuts, wounds or skin conditions.
Sterilise or disinfect all equipment daily. Refer tosuppliers recommendations for correct dilutionand immersion times.
Change sterilising or disinfecting solutions daily. Never use the sink in the staffroom for cleaning
equipment. Always wash your hands after visiting the toilet,
using the personal wash basin provided. Do notwash your hands in a sink.
When washing hands, please follow the handwashing technique instructions above everypersonal wash basin.
Look out for directorders.

Reporting accidentsBy law, an accident report form must be filled in
whenever anyone has an accident at work. It has tobe a clear and accurate record. You might berequired to fill the report in yourself or report theinformation to someone else who will fill in the form.
1 Fill in the form correctly and clearly.

There are three main things tothink about when filling in aform.1 Fill in the form correctly and
clearly.2 Include only facts, not opinions.3 Check carefully to make sure the
information is accurate.
Tips for writing dates clearly
Dates should be written withthe day, month and year.
For example 10th June 2005= 10/06/05.
How would you write 10th October 2005?
Tips for writing times clearly
You should show whether the accident happenedin the morning (am) or afternoon/evening (pm).
For example, 9 oclock in the morning = 9.00 am.
How would you write6 oclock in the evening?

in (e.g. muscle strain, sprain,broken bone, concussion).
