    Frankly, the complaint divi-sion of the 5TJT once had toopen its virtual doors or imagi-nary service window muchmore often than we have doneof late. Im not sure if thatmeans that we have fewer com-plaints than we used to yearsago or that we just take some of those grumbles and protests instride and let them live out their

    usually very short lives and thenjust carry on.

    In any event, it is probably good and healthy to air outsome of the objections and crit-icisms that have come our way over the last few months.

    Following news of Tuesdaystragic earthquake in Haiti, PrimeMinister Benjamin Netanyahusent an Israeli delegation includ-ing officers from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, IDF Home FrontCommand, and IDF MedicalCorp Personnel to the Republicof Haiti in order to examine thepossibilities of offering aid.

    Subsequently, the IDF HomeFront Command decided tosend forces to Haiti, including50 elite members of the searchand rescue unit, in order to aidwith the rescue of the victims in

    the Caribbean country.Israeli Ambassador to theDominican Republic AmosRadian has been instructed toproceed to Haiti in order toreport on the situation there,

    and the Israeli Embassy inWashington has been instructedto be in contact with Americanaid officials in order to coordi-nate humanitarian assistanceand rescue activities.

    IDF search and rescue forceshave been involved in severalinternational rescue operationsafter natural disasters in thepast, such as the Izmit earth-quake in Turkey in 1999.

    Thousands are feared dead inthe quake, which leveled largesections of Haitis capital city of Port-au-Prince, a densely popu-lated city of over two millioninhabitants. Prime MinisterJean-Max Bellerive told CNNWednesday that he believe[s]that we are well over 100,000[killed]. I hope that is not truebecause I hope people had thetime to get out.

    The United Nations has allo-cated ten million U.S. dollars foremergency relief to the strickennation, which has been describedas destroyed by President Rene

    Preval. Haiti is one of the pooreststates in the western hemisphereaccording to UN sources.

    President Obama has sent fourcoast guard cutters and an aircraftcarrier as the advance wave in a

    massive planned aid campaign.Three Israelis are currently

    feared missing in the quake,which was measured at 7.3 on theRichter scale, making it Haitisworst quake in two centuries.

    Among those feared missingis Sharona Elsaieh, daughter of the late noted Left wing figure,

    Abie Nathan.The Jewish Telegraphic

    Agency has reported that Israeliand American Jewish organiza-tions have begun mobilizing to

    provide aid to the victims. TheJoint Distribution Committeeand Bnai Brith have begun rais-ing funds for emergency relief,and the Israel Forum forInternational Humanitarian Aid

    will be sending a private 12-manrescue team.

    Members of the Chabad com-munity of the neighboringnation of the DominicanRepublic have announced theirintention of helping to locatemissing members of the HaitianJewish community.

    These actions come as Israel isin the midst of the first IDF homefront command InternationalEmergency Response Conference(IPRED) which is presenting newinitiatives and developmentsregarding response and prepared-ness for emergency situations.The conference has been attend-ed by over 200 participants from35 countries.

    Col. Dr. Ariel Bar, the MedicalOfficer of the Home FrontCommand, said that his depart-ment can learn a lot from othercountries. I believe that the con-tacts we will make during thisconference will help us to learnmore in the future, he said.
