Mīqāt

• Mīqāt is the geographical boundary that a person intending hajj or ‘umrah may not pass without being in the state of ihrām.

• If a person intending to perform hajj or ‘umrah crosses the mīqāt without the ihrām, he/she must return to the mīqāt and make ‘umrah from there. If he/she does not, he/she must offer an animal for sacrifice.

Makkah•Be in the state of ihrām before arriving at Jeddah•Do not expect to put on the ihrām on the plane.•Do so at home, hotel, or airport before leaving for Jeddah

Hajj Tamattu’

• Tamattu’ literally means to benefit. • Hajj Tamattu’ means a person enters

Makkah with the intention to do ‘umrah. After completing the ‘umrah, he comes out of the state of ihrām by shaving the head or trimming the hair. On the 7th of Dhul Hijjah, he/she will re-enter the state of ihrām with the intention of Hajj.

What is ihrām?

Ihrām in hajj or ‘umrah is a state

wherein certain actions that are usually halāl become harām. Ihrām also refers to two unsown pieces of clothing a person dons while in hajj or ‘umrah.

Ihrām• When a person intends to come into the

state of ihram, he/she should first remove unwanted hair, clip the nails, and take a bath if possible. wudū’ will also suffice.

• Males – they will don two pair of white sheets/towel. One upper garment and one lower. The head should not be covered. Also, the footwear should be such that the upper bone remains exposed.

• Females – Their regular garments. The veil should not touch the face.

Ihrām• After doning the ihrām, perform two rakat of nafl

salat. Brothers can cover their head with the end of their sheets.

• After Salat, make the intention for the ihrām

• Thereafter say the Talbiyah:

dominion is Yours – You have no partner.

Arrival at Makkah

• After you have settle your luggage and other necessities, proceed towards the Masjid to perform the ‘umrah.

• When entering the masjid, keep the gazes down until you feel you are in clear view of the Ka‘bah. Lift your gazes and make du‘a to Allah Ta‘āla. The du‘ā upon the sight of the Ka‘bah is sure to be accepted.

Tawāf• Tawāf consist of seven circuits

around the Ka‘bah.• One has to be in the state of purity

(wudū’) while performing the tawāf. Menstruating women do not perform tawāf until she become free of her menstruation.

• During the tawāf, the Ka‘bah will be to your left.

Raml and Idtibā‘

• Raml and Idtibā‘ are two acts done be men in every tawāf followed by a Sa‘ī.

• Raml– A strong and quick walk with boldness in

which the shoulders are high and forward. – To be done in the first three circuits.

• Idtibā‘– To wear the ihram under your right armpits

and over the left shoulder in order to expose the right shoulder.

– To be done through all seven circuits.

Procedure of Tawāf• Proceed to the line right in front of the Black

Stone (Hajr Aswad). • Stand in a way that the entire Black Stone is to

you right. • Make the intention in your heart for tawāf. • Move to the right, so that the Black stone is

directly in front of you. • Face the Black Stone, raise your hands as you

raise them in Salat, up to your earlobe. And say: “Bismillahi Allahu Akbar.”

• Then raise the hand with palm facing the Black Stone, and as if your hands are touching the black stone, kiss the back of your hand.

• Be sure not to cause any type of harm to any individual.

Continuing Tawāf

• Proceed to your right and commence the tawāf.

• Upon reaching the Black stone each time, you will face your hand to it and kiss you hands again.

• When the 7th circuit is finished, you will once again face your hands towards the Black Stone and kiss your hands.

After Tawāf

• After performing the tawāf, perform two raka‘āt salat anywhere within the masjid. If it is makrūh time, then wait and perform it after the makrūh time expires.

• Go to where Zamzam water is available and drink Zamzam water.

Sa‘i

To pass between Mount Safa and Mount Marwa is called sa‘i

• Before starting the sa‘i, return to the Black Stone and do “Istilam” once again.

• Proceed first to Mount Safa, face the Ka‘bah and make intention of Sa‘i.

• Begin Sa‘i by saying “Bismillah Allahu Akbar”

• Walk towards Marwah.

Sa‘i

• At marwa, face the Ka‘bah and make du‘a again.

• Going from Safa to Marwa is considered as one round. Returning from Marwa to Safa is another round. Total of Seven rounds will be perform ending at Marwa.

• It is sunnah for men to walk briskly between the two green lights. Women will walk in the normal pace.

Ending ‘umrah

• After finishing the seven rounds, men should shave their head and come out of the state of ihram. Trimming the hair is also permissible.

• Women will cut one fingertip’s length of their hair. (about 1 inch)

• Spend the remainder days until Hajj productively. Perform tawāfs, tilāwat, dhikr, etc.

• A person will don the ihrām, and return to the state of ihrām.

• Afterwards, proceed towards Mina’

• It is Sunnah to perform five salats in Mina’.

• It’s sunnah to make Ghusl just before Zawāl.

• If possible, after Zawāl go to Masjid-Namirah.

• If one does go to the masjid, it’s sunnah to listen the Khutbah.

• If praying in the masjid, perform Zuhr and ‘Asr at the time of Zuhr with one Adhān and two Iqāmah behind the Imam. If praying in tent, pray each Salat at its stipulated time.

• To perform wuqūf is a compulsory act of Hajj. The time of wuqūf is from After zawal until sunset. One should try to stand and make du‘ā.

• After sunset to leave for Muzdalifah without making Maghrib Salat at Arafat.

The 10th of Dhul-Hijjah• After sunset, leave ‘Arafāt

for Muzdalifah.• One adhan and one

Iqāmah should be given then Maghrib and ‘Isha should be prayed together at the time of ‘Isha.

• It’s sunnah mu’akadah to spend night at Muzdalifah.

• It’s wājib to make wuqūf in Muzdalifah, anytime between Subah Sādiq until just before sunrise.

• The pilgrims will collect 70 pebbles for pelting.

• Leave for Mina just before sunrise.

The Third Day of Hajj

10th of Zul Hujjah• On this day, Jamaratul-Ukhra (the last)

has to be pelted with seven pebbles.• Act of pelting is called Rami.• It’s sunnah to pelt between sunrise to

zawāl. Permissible to pelt after zawāl until sunset.

• The old, weak, and women can also pelt at night.

How to Pelt• The pebbles should be the size

of chick peas. • While throwing each pebble

one can recite :

ا ور� غ�ف م�• Slaughter an animal. • Halq (shaving) or Qasr

(trimming) is done after slaughtering.

• After Halq the state Ihram comes to an end.

• Women will only do Qasr (cut hair equal to finger tips)

After Halq/Qasr

• The pilgrim will to proceed to Makkah to perform Tawāf al-Ziyārah.

• After Tawāf al-Ziyārah the pilgrim then performs Sa‘i and returns to Minah.

• Note: Tawāf al-Ziyārah can be performed until the 12th of Dhul Hijjah and is not necessary on the 10th only.

The Fourth Day of Hajj

11th of Dhul Hijjah• On this day all three Jamarāt has to be pelted with seven pebbles.

• The preferred time for pelting is on this day is from after Zawāl until before sunset. However, if someone does it after sunset, it will be valid.

• It’s sunnah to spend the night in Mina.

The Fifth Day of Hajj12th of Zul Hijjah

• Pilgrim may return to Makkah before Maghrib.

• The Haji may now remain in Makkah for as long as he desires.

• Tawaaf-ul-Widaa must be performed.

Visiting Madinah

Etiquettes of Madinah:

• On the way to Madinah, recite abundant salutations upon the Prophet (Sallallahu `Alahyi Wasallam)

• As Madinah comes near, increase the salutations.

• It’s preferable to take bath, wear one’s best clothes and in a dignified manner proceed to Masjidun Nabawi.

The Etiquettes of Masjid Al-Nabawi

• Prior to entering the masjid, it’s recommended that one should distribute charity.

• While proceeding towards the blessed grave of the Prophet (Sallallahu `Alahyi Wasallam), keep the heart and mind clear of all evil thought.

• Stand with utmost respect humility and with eyes down cast and offer salam.
