The Korban Omer

In the Beis Hamikdash there was a mitzvah toharvest a measure of barley (3 saah) on thesecond night of Pesach. On the second dayof Pesach there was a mitzvah to bring aportion (an omer) of this measure to the BeisHamikdash.

nowadaysU nfortunately there is no Beis Hamikdashtoday, so we dont offer the Korban Omer.Nevertheless there is still a mitzvah to countthe omer.

Is this mitzvah from the Torah or from

the Rabbis?R ambam ( R abbi Moshe be Maimon) holds itis a mitzvah from the T orah.He holds that the Korban and the countingare two separate mitzvos.Most other poskim hold it is form the R abbisas a remembrance of the Beish Hamikdash.

The Mitzvah of the individual

E very person needs to count both days andweeks.For example we say T oday is the 8 th daywhich is one week and one day of the Omer.

I f Somoene Missed a Whole Day

T he Bhag (Baal Halachos Gedolos) holdsthat the counting is one long Mitzvahtherefore you cant count anymore.T osafos holds that each night is its ownMitzvah and therefore one can continuecounting with a bracha.

Practically, we continue counting the rest of the days without a Bracha.

Womens Obligation in Sefira

W omen are exempt form counting because itis a time bound mitzvah.However, most women have accepted it uponthemselves to do like hearing shofar andshaking lulav.

Wacky what if cases

If a boy becomes a Bar- Mitzvah duringsefira: If he was already counting before , hecan continue counting. If not, then he countswithout a bracha because it is not 7 completeweeks.If someone converted to Judaism duringSefira, he counts without a bracha.

B racha of Shechiyanu

W e dont say the Bracha of ShechiyanuW hy not? 3 R easons:1) It is not a real mitzvah, it is only arememberance of the beis hamikdash.2)W e only make a shehechiyanu when thereis a physical action.

3) T he shehechiyanu from Shavuos coversSefira, because the mitzvah isnt completeuntil you count all 49 days.

Mourning during SefirahW hat happened?

T he 24,000 students of R Akiva died between Pesachand Shavuos.W hat was the big deal?

T hese werent just regular students, they were thefuture great leaders in the world.W hy did they die?

T he Gemara says it is because they did not treat eachother with respect.W hy did they have to die for this?
