Notes on Rules: We generally follow USEF rules except we always allow relaxed show attire and braiding is not required. If you chose to go without formal show clothes, you must wear a shirt with short or long sleeves, and a collar (no tank tops allowed). If you ride without a jacket, no neck wear is allowed and your shirt should be open at the throat. Per USEF, Riders through First Level may wear half-chaps, gaiters or leggings in solid black or brown, without fringe, matching the color of their boots, and made of smooth leather or leather-like material. All other USEF equipment rules for warm up, competition and guest horses apply. Formal show clothes and braiding are required if you compete in a year end Championship class. Notes on Scheduling: We generally don’t allow rides out of order from the rest of the class (ROO) except for very extenuating circumstances. Show secretaries do their best to accommodate special requests but are under no obligation to do so and often with large shows are unable to accommodate special requests, i.e.: “I am trailering with XXX and we need our ride times to be close together”. Higher level rides are NOT guaranteed to be early in the AM. Show secretaries often don’t know where a horse or rider home farm is, so yes you may live in Suffolk and have to be in Virginia Beach for an 8am ride time. PRESIDENTS LETTER – JULY 2017

SVDA is having probably our biggest show season ever with very large SVDA Sponsored shows and more sanctioned

shows than I can ever remember. We also have many riders out there at USEF licensed shows. It promises to be an

excellent awards season. Be sure to get your 8 hours of volunteer time in and THANK YOU TO ALL our dedicated

volunteers and fun loving competitors!

The topic of this month’s newsletter is highlight some of our show policies. These policies apply to SVDA schooling

shows since sanctioned shows are allowed to run their shows as they see fit. The policies and rules are here to keep

the playing field even for all competitors and to have some consistent organization (read – don’t descend into chaos!)

during the show. Our schooling show policies are on our website under the Membership tab in the Membership

manual. We have a document on how to schedule a schooling show that we thought would be interesting in case you

were wondering how it’s done. They are included in this month’s newsletter.

Notes on Rules:

We generally follow USEF rules except we always allow relaxed show attire and braiding is not required. If you chose to go without formal show clothes, you must wear a shirt with short or long sleeves, and a collar (no tank tops allowed). If you ride without a jacket, no neck wear is allowed and your shirt should be open at the throat. Per USEF, Riders through First Level may wear half-chaps, gaiters or leggings in solid black or brown, without fringe, matching the color

of their boots, and made of smooth leather or leather-like material. All other USEF equipment rules for warm up, competition and guest horses apply. Formal show clothes and braiding are required if you compete in a year end Championship class.

Notes on Scheduling:

We generally don’t allow rides out of order from the rest of the class (ROO) except for very extenuating circumstances.

Show secretaries do their best to accommodate special requests but are under no obligation to do so and often with

large shows are unable to accommodate special requests, i.e.: “I am trailering with XXX and we need our ride times to be

close together”. Higher level rides are NOT guaranteed to be early in the AM. Show secretaries often don’t know

where a horse or rider home farm is, so yes you may live in Suffolk and have to be in Virginia Beach for an 8am ride time.

If there is a scratch before or during the show and you fill it – you MUST ride the same test as the scratched ride because

all riders in the same class must ride together and therefore be judged under the same circumstances.

Notes at the show:

The SVDA rep is the liaison between the show secretary, SVDA, and the

competitors. They should be active and visible at all times. They should assist

the volunteers when needed. No one should EVER be REQUIRED to go before

their ride time. (One exception I can think of: In the case of incoming bad

weather, especially T storms, we may try to expedite things to allow as many

riders as possible to show.) If you wish to fill a scratch you MUST ride the test

of the scratched ride. You cannot just show up at the ring and go when there

is an opening. These rules are in place to make sure

there is fairness for all and that the schedule doesn’t degenerate into chaos.

Some of these rules have not be adhered to this year and we ask all

schedulers, secretaries, SVDA reps and competitors to PLEASE adhere to the

rules. They are in place from many years of experience for good reasons.

Rules can’t be changed at the show. If you wish SVDA to consider a policy

update or rule change – please submit it in writing to Robyn or me and we will

bring it to the Board for consideration for the 2018 show year. We are

ALWAYS open to our members’ suggestions and ideas on how we can make

things better, fairer and more fun!

Please be aware that for all schooling shows and clinics sponsored by

SVDA - a CURRENT negative coggins must be received or you will not

be allowed to participate. SVDA must submit a report listing all horses,

owners and coggins accession numbers to the Va Dept of Agriculture

for every sponsored event. We can not make exceptions. So please get

your coggins drawn early to allow processing time so that we don't

have to refuse your participation on the day of a show or clinic.

June 12 , 2017 SVDA Board Meeting Minutes

Members in attendance: Kathy Rowse, Robyn Nunnally, Toni Meranda, Janice Mumford, Cindy Lang, Cookie

Parsons, Krista Bryant, Charlene Jensen, Raymond Penland, Reeta Edmundson, and Wendy Murray.

Call to order: Vice President Robyn Nunnally called the teleconference meeting to order at approximately 7:04

pm on June 12, 2017.

President’s Report: (Kathy Rowse)

Nothing new to report

Vice President’s Report/VADA Report: (Robyn Nunnally)

Meeting agenda emailed to the board.

A document containing duties of the SVDA representatives at schooling shows emailed to the board.

VADA board minutes from the April 12, 2017 and May 17, 2017 teleconferences were emailed to the

board.

Ray Penland submitted the status of our Coggins reporting to VDACS.

The main issue is a horse’s registered name must be on Coggins.

Continuing to recruit volunteers, especially SVDA reps for schooling shows.

Treasurer's Report: (Julie Shilling) not on call

Julie emailed her reports to the board. Toni motioned to approve the reports; Cindy seconded, and the

board voted to approve.

Charlene pointed out the Junior reconciliation includes saddle pads and shirts.

Secretary’s Report: (Toni Meranda)

Toni emailed the board minutes from the April 10, 2017 meeting. Raymond motioned to approve the

minutes, Cookie seconded, and the board voted to approve.

Action Taken Between Meetings:

The following sanctioned shows for the Chestnut Oak Show series were approved by the

subcommittee on April 12:

- May 21

- September 24

- October 22

- November 12

Robyn abstained from the voting on the May 21 date as she is the judge. The show committee

discussed the September and October shows being on the same dates as SVDA schooling shows but

decided since the locations are over 100 miles away from us, there was no conflict in sanctioning these

shows.

The board approved a $210 daily level sponsorship for the Dressage at Lexington show and a $110

championship class sponsorship for the CBLM championship show.

Committee Reports

1. Schooling Shows: (Russ Brun & Ann Jacobson not on call)

The board discussed the need for SVDA to follow licensed show protocols at our schooling

shows - particularly when it comes to changing ride times. Scratches at a test level should be

filled with the same test level.

Kathy took the action to address some these rules in her Presidents Letter published in the SVDA

newsletter.

Other concerns raised:

o Multiple final ride time postings create confusion.

o Special request ride times for competitors with long commutes and competitors trailering

together.

Robyn took the action to help with the ride time posting problem and she will update the entry

secretary instruction document to help address special ride time requests.

Reminder: special requests for ride times cannot always be honored. This is already documented

in the membership manual.

July 16 sanctioned show sponsored by Yellow Rose Farm at Deep Creek Stables was approved

by the sanctioned show sub-committee (Russ, Ann, Robyn & Kathy). Robyn abstained from

voting as she is judging.

2. Awards: (Cookie Parsons)

Cookie emailed her report to the board.

Junior award being discussed

3. Juniors: (Charlene Jensen)

Charlene emailed her report to the board.

Charlene is the team Chef d’Equip.

Cookie and Janice are team coaches.

Gabrielle Flemming has been hired by some competitors to coach.

Outside coaches are not paid for by SVDA

Fund raising:

o $155 June SVDA show

o $100 from Yankee candle

o $45 from consignments

Side note: Tests of Choice (TOC) if offered, can be used as a qualifying score for

championships.

SVDA Team

July Juniors Corner:

We had a wonderful time at the 2017 Region 1 Jr/Yr Dressage Team Championships in Culpeper, VA. We had four junior

horse and rider combos representing SVDA this year; Madison Elliott with Desert Fox, Raymond Penland with Harlequin,

Amelia Matson with Rebel, and Winnie Swanson with Trouble in Chinatown. Two riders were unable to attend because

their horses were lame just prior to the show; Shannon Holloway and Dahlia Jensen. Dahlia still attended the show to

cheer on the SVDA team and assist her team mates with grooming. Every rider scored well in each of their classes,

placing in the ribbons each time. The SVDA Team placed first in their division this year and they also received the Stall

Decorating/ Stable Management award this year for the 2nd time in a row. Maddy Elliott was recognized for the

division’s overall high score. Desert Fox won for Oldest horse in the whole show, Trouble in Chinatown won for Cleanest

horse, and Harlequin won for Best Braids and Tallest horse. Dahlia also received the “Sherry Norris Colson” Best Groom

Award for helping her team be prepared and well groomed. I want to thank all the coaches that came to the show to

help the Junior team do their best: Janice Mumford, Lorna Parsons and Gabriel Fleming. There is so much love and

appreciation for the coaches/trainers who made it possible by giving riding lessons, training horses and helping these

kids grow in their horsemanship and riding skills throughout the year: Janice Mumford, Gabrielle Fleming, Debbie

Rodriguez, Robyn Nunnally and Kathy Geyer Rowse. I also want to thank the parents for their arduous work and support

of these riders in preparation for the show and during the show. And last but, not least the volunteers at the show – as

you know horse shows take many volunteers to keep things running smoothly and the volunteers at the Summer

Dressage show in Culpeper was no exception. I want to thank Rosinburg Events for hosting the 2017 Region 1 Jr/Yr

Dressage Team Championships in conjunction with the Culpeper horseshow.

It’s not too late to start thinking about next year. We should start fundraising as soon as possible to raise funds for next

year’s group of junior riders.

Also, VADA is looking for volunteers to help with the shows. These hours will help for anyone who wants to get VADA

year end awards and these are separate from the SVDA awards and volunteer hours. We could possibly plan on going as

a group for the day to volunteer.

The dates are as follows: July 16-18th in Lexington August 26th in Lexington October 12-15th in Lexington

Thank you, Charlene Jensen [email protected]

BLM Volunteers Needed!

Hello Everyone!

For the CBLMs upcoming in October (12th through 15th), the show is going to need

each and every amazing volunteer! Holly retired as Volunteer Coordinator, so I'm

stepping in to fill her shoes and do the best I can to make sure that all of the

volunteers are happy and in positions where they're happy during the show! My

name is Emily, and if you have come out to volunteer at the show in October in the

last six years, I am sure that you have seen me around helping out!

If you know that you will be competing in the show and want to volunteer some for

hours, shoot me an email and let me know so I can put your name down! Or if you

know already that you want to volunteer, let me know so I can put your name down!

If you are thinking about it, let me know so I can answer any questions that you

have!

Also, I have a page set up on Facebook for the Volunteers as another means of

communication. If you want to join the page on Facebook, let me know and I'll send

you an invite over Facebook!

If you're going to send me information, please remember that I'm completely new to

this, so I don't have all of the information that Holly did. So if you're used to getting a

certain volunteer post with Holly or any type of accommodation or anything, please

let me know so I can make sure that you are taken care of!

I am looking forward to working with every one of you amazing volunteers!

Thank you so much!

How to Schedule a Schooling Show

ENTRIES

Keep track of entries as they come in. Shows are scheduled at 8 hours of testing time, two 15

minutes breaks and 1 thirty minute lunch (total of 9 hours). So you MUST keep up with entries

as they arrive to know approximately how much ride time is still available. Members who enter

before the closing date will be scheduled first. If, after the closing date, time is still available,

schedule any members who enter late and non-members (in the order entries are received).

Telephone and/or emailed entries are NOT acceptable. Do NOT schedule rides for which there is

no signed entry form or check.

Entry forms must be completed in their entirety. Any information or signature that is not

present will result in an uncleared entry. Be sure the emergency contact information is shown

and all signatures are present.

In order to get in more rides, we may have to use a small arena for some riders. The show

committee will make this decision, so contact them as entries approach 60 rides so they can

decide how to proceed.

USEF rules allow 3 tests per HORSE, however, riders are only allowed 2 tests per horse if the

show is full. If the show is not full, riders may be scheduled for a 3rd test.

SVDA has a no refund policy on entry fees once the closing date has passed.

Late entries may be placed on a waiting list to fill scratches. If a scratched slot is filled, the new

rider must pay the $5 late fee. Keep the envelope showing the postmark date for any late

entries.

We have 2 boxes: an entry box with all the tests and an office supply box. They are normally

stored at Kathy Rowse’s house. Contact Kathy (757.617.9505; [email protected]) or

Robyn ([email protected]; 757.284.1106) to arrange to pick up the boxes to use when

scheduling your show.

Coggins tests must be submitted prior to the show. We no longer allow people to bring a

Coggins to a show, we must have it in advance, no exceptions. I will send entry secretaries our

list of current Coggins. Send any new one you receive to me via scanning or take a picture and

email to [email protected].

Entrants who are not SVDA members pay an extra $5 per class. There is a membership list in

the front of the Coggins folder – use it to ensure entrants have paid accordingly. If the list is not

current, contact the membership chairman to obtain a recent one.

Entry secretaries may honor special requests as they see fit. Don’t drive yourself crazy!

Cleared and Uncleared Entries

List entries on the sheets provided in the box as either “Cleared” or “Uncleared”. Put these lists,

along with numbers, in the labeled ziplock bags (also in the box). For the Uncleared entrants,

be sure to plainly identify what is needed from them (Coggins, $10, etc).

Call or email anyone who does not submit a cleared entry so they know what to bring to the

show to be cleared.

Scheduling

You should have an email from Robyn showing test scheduling times. These times include a 2

minute interval between rides, so use these times for scheduling. Schedule a 15 minute break

in the morning and afternoon and a 30 minute lunch break for the judge.

There are many factors that can affect the order in which rides are scheduled (special requests,

horses being hauled together, etc). We cannot honor every request. In general, try to schedule

higher level rides in the morning, especially during hot months (June – August). If possible, also

consider the distance someone may be hauling – try not to put a rider from Smithfield as the

8.00 ride in VA Beach. These are just suggestions and every show presents different situations.

Do not make yourself crazy trying to accommodate every request.

Rides out of order are not allowed.

Allow 30 minutes between tests for horses and 50 minutes for riders on different horses. (This

may be waived with the rider’s permission.)

Once the schedule is complete, notify the schooling show chairman([email protected]) and

the vice-president of starting and ending times so they can contact the judge and volunteers.

Send the list of times to Robyn Nunnally ([email protected]) for review. Finally, contact

the webmaster to have times posted on our website. Try to have ride times finished by the

Wednesday before the show.

Preparing Tests

The tests are in folders in the entry box. Label each test used with show name, date, judge,

number, horse name and rider name. You can use labels for this or write it in ink. All the

original tests are in a light lime green folder should you need to make copies. Please do not

leave the box depleted of tests. FEI tests may need to be printed; contact Robyn if you need

FEI tests.

Tests for gaited classes – use the regular test sheets unless they have requested to use the

WDAA tests.

Programs

Prepare a program. Put the show name, address of the farm, date and judge’s name at the top.

Make columns for times, number, horse name, rider name, points, percentage, and placing.

Indicate “Show Ends at ___:____” at the bottom of the program. Place the SVDA logo on the

program. Thank the judge, hosting farm and the volunteers on the program.

Have the programs printed, about 1 per rider plus about 10 more. Put them on top in the office

supply box so the show secretary can easily find them.

You may need to have some test copies printed. Keep your receipts and contact the SVDA

Treasurer for reimbursement instructions.

Prepare Scribe Packet

SVDA Schooling Show Information In order for the schooling show entry process to run as smoothly as possible, the entry procedures are as follows. Please

read this notice carefully and save it for future reference.

A generic entry form can be located on website or in the newsletter and may be duplicated. Please fill in the date and

location blanks on the form when you send in your entry.

A list of coming schooling shows will be printed in each newsletter and on the website and will include the opening date,

closing date and entry secretary for each show.

Opening date (first date your entry can be postmarked) will be two weeks before the closing date.

Closing date (last date your entry can be postmarked) will be the Monday thirteen days prior to the show. (If Monday is

a holiday, entries postmarked Tuesday will be accepted)

Entries will be accepted on a first come, first served basis by postmark. Members will be accepted before non-members

before the closing date but after the closing date non-members and members will accepted equally until the show is full.

Non-members must pay the non-membership fee.

Entries must be paid in full by the closing date of the schooling show; or the ride(s) cannot be scheduled. The late fee

of $5.00 per ride applies if the entry or entry fee is received after the closing date. The late fee also applies when

scratched rides are filled after the entry date. (3/96) Telephone entries are not accepted!

Ride times will be available the Weds - Fri before the show. The entry secretary may be phoned between 6:00 pm and

9:00 pm only. Please do not leave a message on the secretary's answering machine asking her to call you back. Some,

but not all, Entry Secretaries e-mail ride times. Please call if you have not received an e-mail by the Friday prior to the

show. When possible ride times will be posted on the SVDA website. www.gosvda.org

Tests: Current USDF or FEI tests and WDAA tests will be utilized. Professionals may ride and be scored/ placed in Intro.

(4/13)

PLEASE NOTE: SVDA members who enter SVDA Schooling Shows for Year End Awards are required to complete eight

volunteer service hours, the first four of which must be done by July 1. Please see the “SVDA Volunteer Jobs Info”

Volunteer requirements for new members who join after the show season is in progress: extenuating circumstances will

be examined on an individual basis.(2/96)

Judges: The use of local USDF “L” certified graduates are acceptable for schooling shows as long as the USEF thirty day

rule applies; to paraphrase, one cannot ride for credit in front of a judge with whom one trained within the last thirty

days. (1/98)

Riders must be prepared to ride in a small arena for Introductory Level through Training 3. (2011)

Refunds: Similar to the policy with USEF Licensed shows, after the closing dates –there are NO REFUNDS regardless of

the reason. Under extreme circumstances, a show entrant may write a letter to the SVDA board for consideration for a

refund, but this will be granted only under extreme and unusual circumstances. Before the closing date, riders may

scratch for any reason and their checks will be destroyed. (2010)

Over filled shows: SVDA shows will generally only be scheduled for 9 hour days including lunch and break. If shows are

oversubscribed, in order to accommodate as many riders as possible: each rider will be limited to 2 tests. Please

indicate on your entry which will be the 2 tests that you prefer to ride. If you don’t indicate which tests you want to

ride, the SVDA entry secretary will chose the 2 highest level tests for you. SVDA members will be given preference over

non-members up to the closing date. After the closing date– non-SVDA members will be accommodated on an equal

basis with members on a 1st come, 1st serve basis. (10/11)

SVDA Schooling shows are occasionally cancelled due to poor weather, including previously wet weeks which can affect

warm-up and parking. Every effort will be made to reschedule the show to another date at the same farm but that is

not always possible. If a post-phoned show is rescheduled, previously scheduled riders will have 1st choice at re-entering

the rescheduled show. Reasonable efforts will be made to contact riders from the original show, however it is the

rider’s responsibility to contact the entry secretary to let them know that they do wish to ride. If a rider does not

contact the entry secretary within 5 days of the new date, it will be presumed that they do not wish to ride and the

checks will be destroyed. New riders will only be scheduled if there is enough room in the schedule to accommodate

them. (2010)

When scheduling a show – entry secretaries are not responsible for fulfilling requests like “please schedule all my rides

near the person I am trailering with”. If you enter a show – be prepared to be there all day. Occasionally we will try to

accommodate people who have to go to work but that is not guaranteed. (2010)

We hope that this Schooling Show Season is enjoyable for both you and your horse. Please contact the Schooling Show

Chairman with comments or suggestions. And please call the Vice President to volunteer. Our schooling shows would

not be possible without your help.

Entries

On entry forms, clearly print the name of the horse and rider. Please make sure your cell # and email address are

legible. Once a Coggins test is submitted, it is kept on file until the expiration date (one year from the date on which the

blood was drawn for the test, not the date on which the test was read.) Check the expiration date of your Coggins test.

If it expires during show season, plan to have it redrawn three to four weeks early. The Coggins can be submitted to the

entry secretary of the next schooling show, to be kept on file.

Make sure the names of the horse and rider and the date the blood was drawn are legible. Also check the spelling of

your horse's name on the Coggins test paper. If the name is incorrectly spelled or if your horse is shown under a name

not on the test paper, attach a note to the test giving the horse's show name, i.e.” Buddy - Shown as Mon Ami". Coggins

tests are filed alphabetically by horse's show name.

Entries must be paid in full by the closing date of the schooling show or the ride(s) cannot be scheduled. The late fee of

$5.00 per ride applies if the entry or entry fee is received after the closing date of the show.

Scratches

If you find you won't be able to participate in a show you've entered, you can withdraw from, or scratch, any or all

classes. Up to the Saturday before the show, call the entries secretary to scratch. The day of the show, you can see the

Show Secretary on the grounds, or call her after the show. The Show Secretary is listed with the volunteers on the

Schooling Show Information page of each newsletter It is assumed that, if you aren't at the show or don't show up at

your ride time, you've had to scratch. If you are unable to ride because your horse is ill or lame the no-refund policy

after the closing date as stated above is still in effect.

The Entries Secretary will attempt to fill scratched rides if at all possible. This is her responsibility, not that of the rider

who withdrew. The Entries Secretary may keep a waiting list of competitors who contact her after the closing date of

the show. There is a late entry fee of five dollars ($5.00) assessed when a rider fills a scratched ride. There is no refund

for the original rider even if the ride times are filled.

Combined Training Dressage Tests

Some of our members have requested that we offer FEI Combined Training dressage tests at our schooling shows. The

board has agreed this can be done. The rider will be responsible for enclosing a copy of the test (for the judge) and a

USDF Test Score Sheet to the entries secretary with her entry. These tests will be ridden HC (scores are for the riders'

information and do not count toward year end awards).

Western Dressage Division:

In 2012, SVDA embraced the new discipline of Western Dressage and include it in year end awards, A two year trial

period in 2012 and 2013 was concluded and Western Dressage has been accepted into the SVDA Schooling Shows and

Awards Division.

5) The lowest level tests (equivalent to intro Test) can be ridden by professionals (2013)

6) “Relaxed Attire” permitted, ie: show attire is not required. Chaps, neckwear and long sleeved shirts are not

required but may be worn. Boots, long pans/trousers and helmets with attached harness are required. A short

sleeved shirt with collar (polo or golf shirt) worn without neckwear is acceptable (3/12)

7) Regardless of the attire that a rider chooses – an ASTM approved helmet MUST be worn at all times when

mounted including in competition (2/12)

Mounting on the right by Sarah Miller

The first thing that comes to mind when someone says or does it is that ‘Farmer’sOnly.com’ ad when

the city girl is mounting the horse on the right. She is mounting the horse on the right; she is wearing red

shorts and high heel wedges. A little later in the ad she is hanging off the side of the horse as it gallops by.

She is supposed to be a really bad rider; actually the actor is a very good stunt rider. The point is supposed to

be that she is an idiot and she shows it by mounting on the right. Most horse people think you’re an idiot if

you mount on the right. It is traditional to mount on the left, it goes back to when Knights rode their chargers

into battle. Most knights were right handed, their swords hung on their left side so they could draw it out. It’s

kind of hard to mount a horse from the right if your sword is in the way. But it might even go farther back to

Roman times, again right handed rider sword on left.

Anyway, how many riders think about training their horses to be mounted from the right? I have

trained all my horses to allow the rider to mount from the right. Those of you who knew Ray Norman, know

that he trained all his horses to stand still for the rider to mount from either side. All that being said, how

many of you have ever thought of mounting on the right? Maybe a few of you, but for the most part I’ll bet

90% of you have never thought about it. Suppose you are on a trial ride and get off your horse for some

reason and then go to get back on and you find that the left side of the horse is on the down side of the hill.

You can’t get your foot up and into the stirrup. Okay, just turn the horse around and now the left side is on

the uphill side…except you can’t safely turn your horse around, the trail is not wide enough; the slope is to

step, or any number of other reasons. What do you do?

Back to what I said earlier, I train my horses to allow the rider to mount from the left or the right. You

never know when it might come in handy. Case in point, I was at a horse show last month, I took a bad fall

and injured my left leg pretty badly. Turn wonderful shades of purple, blue, black and green. From the knee

to toes all kinds of wonderful colors. I could walk, sort of, but when it came time to ride I could not get my left

foot in the stirrup, even from a step stool. (Yes, I know what some of you are thinking even with a step ladder

you couldn’t get on Xander.) Anyway my left leg was unless and there was no way was getting on the horse. I

know what some of you are thinking, I had no business riding in the first place with that injury and I’ll give you

that but when you send the kind of money we spend to go to these Licensed show you are going to find a way

to put your butt in the saddle and hope you stay there. So, with the help of a couple of friends, one holding

the reins, the other holding the left stirrup, I move the step stool to the right and climbed on. You can image

the looks I got. A dressage ride at a licensed show mounting from the right! An FEI rider no less! Those who

know me know what happened and were surprised I was even riding, but I saw the looks from the other

people. OH WELL, I got up. I stayed on. I rode my test. I got a 64% in my MFS and when I got out I got off on

the right side too.

Now you may never have to mount your horse from the right, many horses will shy if you go to their

right side. It’s all a matter of training the horse to accept you on their right side (off side). We, as riders,

usually don’t bother with this, but what if you need it one day? As Clinton Anderson is so fond of pointing out

horse have to be trained on the right side and then the same on their left side. Their brains don’t work like

ours do, we learn and process right and carry it over to the left, horses just don’t.
