A successful (hi)story to participate in the clubs activities and to shape the clubs

policy for the good of its fans and members.

Am The HSV Supporters Club was founded

    March 28, 1993. Thirty-six passionate Ham-

burg fans came together to establish the

Supporters Club as an independent depart-

ment within the club. The main objective has always re-

mained the same: to par ticipate in the clubs activitiesand to shape the clubs policy for the good of its fans

    and members.

From its founding days, the SC has been concentrating

on supporting Hamburg SVs Bundesliga team, and away

travel and festivities of all kinds have turned out to be suc-

cessful means to maintain comradeship and unity within

    Hamburgs huge following.

However, and as Hamburg SV is a multi-sport club, many

other departments are supported and equipped by the

    SC, too.

What started off as a small crew of members has grown

to be an association which might well be regarded unique. With more than 50,000 members, the Supporters Club is

not only Hamburg SVs largest department but different

to all other fans associations in terms of organization and

    influence.

    Who we are

The Supporters Club is led by a board of five club mem-

bers who work on a voluntary basis. This board is sup-

ported by a full-time manager and twelve employees.

Part-timers and volunteers help them if need be. Besides

typical fan base support service, they maintain contact

with fan clubs, organize away travel and tickets and offer

exclusive Supporters Club clothing for their members. For

the fans, they are the first contact persons when gettingin touch with the club.

In addition to our full-timers, the SC can rely upon several

hundred volunteers who are prepared to lend a helping

hand whenever necessary: In almost all German cities

and regions, the SC has contact persons ready to help

    the ordinary HSV supporter.

If you want to become a member of the HSV Suppor-

ters Club, you have got to join Hamburg SV. As the SC is

part of the overall club, the individual members fees help

support the club as a whole as fees are evenly shared

between SC and club. The money received by the Sup-

porters Club is used to finance projects like the Suppor-ters News and celebrations of all kind, and it pays for our

full-time workforce. Other departments and the clubs

museum are supported, too. At the SCs annual meeting,

the board explains in detail how funds have been spent.

The SC meets the Board of Directors at Hamburg SV on a

regular basis to discuss the state of affairs. With its critical

but constructive views, the SC has managed to ensure that

no fan-related decisions will be taken by the HSV Board of

Directors without prior consultation of the Supporters Club.

    what we have gained

Since the formation of the Supporters Club, we have ma-

naged to get many a thing going. When our stadium wasbeing rebuilt, we successfully fought for maintaining our

terraces on the North and South End of our ground. Whe-

re seating was inevitable, we very much supported the

idea of uniform seat colours and incorporated club names

and crests, taking British grounds as role models.

When it comes to season tickets, there are talks between

the SC and the HSV Board of Directors before the start

of each season. Thus, we have managed to achieve a

permanent discount on season tickets for members. On

our North End B and C tiers, we successfully demanded

    inexpensive seating.

    Museum

Hamburg SV was the first German Bun-

desliga club to have a museum of their

own. The Supporters Club was very much

involved in creating and developing the

museum and today remains one of its major sponsors.

And one of the founders of the SC is now the museums

    director.

    Amateur Sports Departments

As has been said, the Supporters Clubfunds a variety of amateur sports depart-

ments within Hamburg SV. Until 2008/ 09,

    Hamburgs Reserves were supported,

too, as Supporters volunteered as stewarts and ran the

beer stalls. Unfortunately, the German Football League

has meanwhile changed their policy, not allowing this

kind of amateur involvement any longer.

    Events

The Supporters Club aims to represent

the club whenever there is a major eventgoing on in the city of Hamburg. In 2003,

we for the first time joined the Hamburg

Schlagermove, our annual, carnivalesque German Hits

Parade, with a float of our own. In addition to our annual

end-of-season party, there are things going on such as

the Blue-White-Black Fan Party together with the sup-

porters of Arminia Bielefeld, whose team play in our co-

lours. Special highlights have been the decennial of the

SC which was celebrated on the Cap San Diego down

at the port or the 120 years of Hamburg SV festivities at

the landing bridges on the banks of the river Elbe.

Together with the Senioren, the O.A.P.s of our club, we

reintroduced the almost forgotten tradition of the Blue-

White-Black Night, a well-respected dance and ball. On

the music scene, we have been present at many of local

songwriting hero Lotto King Karls gigs or organized con-certs ourselves, with bands like Abschlach! whose musi-

cians are all members of the SC.

    what we do today

    Away

Organizing away days has become a ma-

jor part of our everyday job. In the days

before the SC, travel to away matches

was usually offered by commercial ven-

dors or organized by individual fans. Since 1993, we havebeen offering official tours run by the club. With over 100

football specials, we hold the league record in Germa-

ny. This is probably only topped by our most spectacular

idea: The HSV Express, which was a special train owned

by the club including a disco and bar compartment.

Some 40 trips were made with this train, before increa-

sing costs, poor fixture planning and short-term match

postponements stopped us from using the HSV Express

    on a regular basis.

Distributing away tickets is another part of our job. The

last few seasons have proven how important away ti-

ckets are. More often than not we have been sold out.For those who follow on a regular basis, we have introdu-

ced what we call an Away Season Ticket so that our

most loyal followers no longer run the risk of missing an

    away match.

    supporters news

The fan mag Supporters News is our

very own mouthpiece. It currently appears

four times a year. Many volunteers contri-

bute, writing about what they consider im-

portant in relation to their club and football in general. EachSC member receives the SN free via German post and is

    invited to participate himself.

    www.hsv-sc.de

Our website www.hsv-sc.de is updated se-

veral times a day to forward information on

HSV as quickly as possible. Additionally,

there is a vast picture gallery where each

registered member can share his or her photographs with

other fans. There is a fan forum which is intensively used

and an online shop where away and travel tickets and the

latest SC mechandise can be ordered.

    Merchandising

Even in its early days the SCs members

took pride in designing clothes themsel-

ves. Today, scarves, jackets, polo shirts as

well as key rings, patches, metal badges

and pennants are offered. Whenever there is an occasion,

a special edition comes out, be it a specific Footy Special

Tee or a Now More Than Ever shirt (as came out in

2007 when the club was fighting relegation). The SC Collection is mainly concentrating on the clubs

colours, with quality and durability always regarded more

essential than being of the latest fashion.

These products are sold via our online store www.hsv-

fanstore.de but also at the club shops in the city centre

and at the ground, at the SC stall before the home mat-

ches and at the Supporters Embassy home and away.

    where you find us

    The Supporters Embassy

This van is the meeting point of all HSV fans

at away matches or at events where we are

present. It is supposed to function as a piece

of home away from home (thus, Embas-

sy). You can get help here when you dont know any further,

and due to its peculiar design, the van cannot be missed.

    Office North

    Since December, 2006, the Supporters

Club is based in the Office North, in the

North Stand of our stadium. From here,

we care for our fans and are ready to helpthem, using phone, fax, postal services or the internet. Or

    they might just pop in.

    SC Stall

On concourse 3 of the North Stand, there is

the SC Stall which is open on matchdays.

Here fans can book and buy away tickets,

train, bus and plane vouchers or the latest

merchandise. Traditionally, the area in front of the stall is the

meeting place of the Hamburg diehards. Usually, the Sup-

porters Club board members are present and can be ques-

tioned (or praised or abused, just as you like).

    Regional Contact Persons

We do not only have the steelplate-made

Embassy we are glad to have embassa-

dors made of flesh and blood, too. Our Re-

gional Contact Persons function as focal

points in their respective regions. They work voluntarily

and organize travel to home and away matches, starting

from their respective home towns. For the HSV fan who

does not reside in the Greater Hamburg area, these Con-tact Persons are valueable sources of information for all

    things Hamburg.

    Official Fan Clubs

Yet another type of embassadors are the

Official Fan Clubs (OFCs) of Hamburg. Cur-

rently, there are more than 700 of them re-

gistered at the SC. We support them in that

we help planning trips and supplying them with tickets.

    what else do we do

    Young Supporters

The Young Supporters are a group of young

people, led by the HSV Fan Project and the

Supporters Club. The group provides for

young people between 14 and 18 years of

age, strengthening the bond between club and fans but

paying special attention to the fans young age.

    Unsere Kurve (Our End)

We care for Hamburg SV, but we also care

for those issues that concern all footballfans alike. Due to our prominent structure,

the Supporters Club to a certain extend has

become the vanguard for fans of other clubs, too, who we

support and advice in their attempt to create similar struc-

tures at home. At Unsere Kurve, we tackle, for example,

the Leagues banning order policy, thus creating a lobby

which has managed to become an accepted counterpart at

their meetings with the FA and the League.

    Being and becoming

    activeSupporting members = passive members?

Well, yeah, you might easily think thats true,

if you think of a typical passive member-

ship scheme. But without a doubt, so-

called passive members can be active

in a club in different ways. Without the members beingprepared to get involved, no club neither amateur nor

professionell would be able to exist.

Because of its structure, its size and its financial indepen-

dence, the SC is able to offer its numerous members se-

veral opportunities to get involved in the life of the club:

The SC is happy to have a staff of over 300 fans who

regularly and voluntarily work for the club. Because of

this, the Supporters News has become the football fan-

zine with the highest circulation in Germany. Besides the

main part of the editorial contributions, the layout, too, is

mostly in the hands of volunteers.

The SC homepage (www.hsv-sc.de) is, because of thevoluntary effort invested, probably the most extensive

    football site on the net.

Matches of our Hamburg Reserves could be played on a

low-cost basis because of the many volunteers who hel-

ped before, during and after the matches.

Same applies to our football specials, our coach tours, our

info desks, and parties: Without volunteers, there wouldhave been none of all that.

But taking part in the clubs life also means practising

your given right as a member. The supreme right of every

member is the right to vote and to participate. HSV mem-

bers have many opportunities to elect a variety of boards.

An impressive turnout of voters means more democracy

within the club, and therefore we hope new members will

    turn up, too.

Let us show you how and where you can vote, and let us

explain to you the structure of Hamburg SV.

The Board of Seniors leads the

Community of Seniors. Every HSV mem-

ber who is older than 35 and a member for

five years or longer automatically becomespart of this community. They are mainly

    concerned with maintaining tradition and

unity within the club. The Community of

Seniors elect one delegate for the Super-

    visory Board.

This board is elected in the course of

an annual meeting of all the HSV amateur

    sports departments. They are responsible

for all non-professionell sports within the

club. The amateur departments elect one

delegate for the Supervisory Board. Mem-

bers of the Supporters Club are not allo-

wed to vote at the amateurs meetings.

This is roughly speaking how Hamburg SV

is structured. Now you need to know how

and when you can make use of your right

    to vote.

    The Supporters Club

    The board of five which

leads the SC is elected at

    the departments annual

meeting. The SC electsone delegate for the Su-

    pervisory Board.

    They are elected for

a period of three years by

    the Meeting of Members.

    Bi-annually, they check

the clubs accountingand report directly to the

    members.

what am I allowed to do?

Well, we are the club that is the

heart of the matter, basically. Moreprecisely: The members of Hamburg

SV decide who runs the club. This

happens in that the members elect a

    Supervisory Board. This Supervisory

Board then appoints the Board of Di-

rectors (except the Director for Club

Members Issues who is directly elec-

ted by the Meeting of Members).

In addition, members of the Suppor-

ters Club elect their delegate for the

Supervisory Board, and their board ofvolunteers that runs the SC.

And you may vote for your candidates

for the Honorary Board, the auditors

and the Board of Seniors (if youre old

    enough).

As you can see: Even as an ordinary

member, your vote can mean a diffe-

rence. So make use of your right to

vote and show up at the meetings.
