At 22 what hasnrsquot rockstar Charles Lau-rita done

Hersquos traveled the world doing shows and making videos He gives guitar lessons to people two and three times his age

Locally he has become a cultural icon If you see him in person you canrsquot mistake him for anyone else

Could it be the hair ldquoIrsquom very proud of how everything is

falling into placerdquo admits the 2009 gradu-ate of Nottingham High ldquoI am incredibly overwhelmed by how fast things are mov-ing for the band Itrsquos definitely a real treat to work with my band matesrdquo

As thankful as he is to them Laurita may be in the middle of the same dilemma Eminem experienced in 2004 ndashthose chicks didnrsquot even know the name of his band It was D12

Lauritarsquos band is called The Mischief They specialize in funk and alternative They also have a horn section

Doesnrsquot sound like a group of genres that can be successfully crossed Laurita says the mix is a real crowd-pleaser

ldquoI think the fans have been pleasantly surprisedrdquo he says ldquoSome people who see us are completely baffled that horns and electric guitars can play together The band has a little something for everyone - rhythms and grooves that you can dance to intricate parts that musicians will appreci-ate pop sounds that casual music listeners will enjoy and many different genres fused togetherrdquo

Theyrsquore making mischief in the music world And theyrsquore coming to a CD release party near you Soon

ldquoJune 14th is going to be hugerdquo he pro-claims ldquoWersquoll be playing all of the materi-al from our CD as well as some unreleased songs Irsquove been looking forward to this release party for quite some timerdquo

Laurita and his crew will be at the for-mer Cedar Gardens Banquet Hall ndash now called Princeton Manor Banquet Hall ndash at 7pm on Friday June 14th

The band feels itrsquos a great opportunity

for returning fans to hear some new sounds and for they and first-timers alike it should be nothing short of an entertaining Friday night

ldquoWersquore looking forward to really break-ing out of our boundaries and playing many places wersquove never performed at beforerdquo Laurita says about the near and distant fu-ture ldquoI have great faith in this project as well as my band mates and Irsquom incredibly thankful that they enjoy playing my musicrdquo

Lauritarsquos ldquomusicrdquo and his following of it started at the age of 6 with of all groups the Spice Girls He says it was from them that he discovered music was a ldquothingrdquo

But many more inspirations followed David Bowie Stevie Wonder Michael Jackson Johnny Cash Earth Wind amp Fire and Johann Sebastian Bach all contributed in the making of the musician Laurita is to-day

For years Laurita performed at bars small clubs Papa Carlrsquos Jam For Life and elsewhere either by himself or with his cover band

The existing group of instrumentalists is a mix of longtime friends and other home-grown heroes

ldquoDarwin Morua had played drums in my cover bandrdquo says Laurita naming The Mischiefrsquos lineup ldquoChandler Scales (saxophone) and I had gone to high school together and we had always talked about having an original group with horns so he was immediately in Kenny Hamilton (bass) had many classes in college with me and I had finally pestered him enough to join the group that he gave in (and Irsquom very thankful he did) Steve Balalis (trombone) and Sean Joyce (trumpet) were introduced to me through friends in college and they were a perfect fit for the grouprdquo

Looking ahead Laurita has nothing but high hopes for the group He feels the CD release party will be a big step forward

The first of perhaps many steps ldquoHopefully the future holds great prog-

ress for the group Without those guys Charles Laurita amp The Mischief would not nearly be half as enjoyablerdquo

On June 22 (with a rain date of June 23) the CJACC is organizing its first annual ldquoHamilton Community Dayrdquo featuring a car truck and motorcycle show sponsored by the CJACC and is inviting all car enthu-siasts to be a part of this event Every car show participant will receive a jam-packed goodie bag upon entering and it is expect-ed that more than 200 cars and motorcycles will be present The Top 40 vehicles will be presented with trophies (sponsored by Grand Bank and Innovative Awards) and each winner will be presented with a gift certificate from a local restaurant auto ser-vice or other business establishment

TRENTON -- As the old clicheacute goes every picture is worth a thousand words So how long then should a story on Trenton Thunder photographer David Schofield be

For as long as the franchise has been opening the doors of whatrsquos now known as Arm amp Hammer Park Schofield has been there shooting all the iconic moments and legendary players that have come through the capital city for the past 20 seasons He estimates hersquos been to well over 600 games in Trenton and averages 600-700 photos a game In taking nearly a half a million pictures hersquos gone through ten different cameras since the teamrsquos inception

ldquoWhen it comes to capturing the action on a baseball diamond he is second to none and we are proud that hersquos been our photographer since we opened our doors back in 1994rdquo said Thunder director of public relations Bill Cook

ldquoWhether Dave is interacting with fans players or staff members he always has a smile on his face and is an amazing ambassador for the Trenton Thunder organizationrdquo

Schofield who has struck up a friendship with nearly every reporter fellow photographer player or staff member who has come across him is nearly as good at talking as he is taking pictures and thatrsquos saying something given hersquos been published across the country in countless major publications throughout his career But he was kind enough to put the former skill to good use when it came to discussing the latter recently sitting down with The Hamiltonian for a lengthy chat

Mike Ashmore So I know yoursquod had many photography credits under your belt before the Thunder came around in 1994 but I hear therersquos an interesting story behind how you got the job in Trenton

David Schofield ldquoIrsquod been working for the Reading Phillies since the late 80rsquos doing most of their photography It worked so that I did action shots and they liked them they took them and they used them In 1992 when they were talking about putting a team in Trenton my wife worked in the building right next door So Irsquod come out and have lunch with her and on a nice day wersquod take a walk down along by the river before all of the stadium or any of this stuff was built We were out here one day and we were just looking at this just disgusting looking field out here and I said lsquoYou know what this would be a really good spot for a baseball park if they were going to put one herersquo

ldquoNot that anybody listened to me and not that I ever said it to anybody but her But then months later she came to me and she said they were talking about putting the baseball park right where you said they

should Sure enough they did So when I found out about it I found out who was involved and I saw that a lot of the people involved were Trenton people people I knew And I just said that I was going to go over one day when they were doing their hiring and take a portfolio of pictures from my old hockey days whatever I did that and three of the people who were sitting at the table that day happened to be huge Phillies fans and they saw all these Phillies pictures from spring training and from Reading and Scranton and they were kind of interested Tom McCarthy ultimately made the decision to go to Wayne Hodes who was the general manager and say lsquoHey look Wersquore going probably going to need somebody to do this why donrsquot we talk to this guyrsquo

ldquoAnd they did and it just kind of happened They said OK wersquoll let you do it And it just kind of grew from there to where I became the team photographer The first year before they came here Eric Lipsman and I met up down in Lakeland in Florida and did the headshots of the incoming team which was the first team to play hererdquo

Ashmore Did you ever think back then that it would be this long of a ride for you with the Thunder

Schofield ldquoI never thought about it The great thing about the Thunder was from day one the people who were in charge here made me kind of a part of the group part of the team As a minimal member of the team I was kind of hoping that it would (last this long) because I thought it was a great idea Letrsquos face it it doesnrsquot suck to come to a baseball park and work every dayrdquo

Ashmore It seems like everywhere you look in the ballpark and even outside of it as well there are photos that yoursquove taken Have you ever really had time to sit back and think about the impact that yoursquove had on the franchise and capturing its success over the past 20 years

Schofield ldquoIrsquom really glad and happy and proud but not in an arrogant way that what Irsquove done has helped people see the history of the team Really Irsquom a chronicler I havenrsquot had anything to do with the history of the team other than being able to chronicle what has happened here through photographyrdquo

Ashmore Is there a particular shot yoursquore most proud of or is there one that really sticks out in your mind from your time here

Schofield ldquoGood lord I donrsquot know You know what it is therersquos just been so many of them Obviously there are two from the first year Brian Edmondson throwing the

very first pitch for the Trenton Thunder in Harrisburg I went out there for that that was pretty fun And then coming back here for the series where they finally opened up here after all the nonsense that went on Trever Miller (threw the first pitch) and I was in the stands and I got the shot of him throwing out the first pitch at Waterfront Park That I think is kind of cool I love the one from Akron with Tony (Franklin) lifting the trophy the first Eastern League Championship Therersquos one I got I think the first time the Thunder made the playoffs under (the) Boston (affiliation) they got knocked out of the playoffs in lsquo95 by Reading who eventually won And I have a great picture of Nomar Garciaparra and Dave Doster who was a big star for the Reading Phillies at the time Scott Rolen wasnrsquot there hersquod already been sent up But itrsquos a great picture of the two of them shaking hands at home plate after the game after the celebration Therersquos just so many I could never pick out one I wish somebody else would so Irsquod have something to sayrdquo

Ashmore I think a more recent one that a lot of people still talk about is your shot of Austin Jacksonrsquos amazing catch at the outfield wall against Portland during the Eastern League playoffs a few years back

Schofield ldquoI like that one too where hersquos climbing the wall out there Thatrsquos a funny story too I was coming back into the press box I just figured Irsquod go back in But a friend of mine called me from either section C or D over on the first baseline and I decided Irsquod go out and talk to him So I was sitting there with him and I had the camera sitting between us and I hear the crack of the bat I just turned out towards center field and just started firing pictures I got focused on Jackson started firing pictures off and I said lsquoHoly crap look at this

Look what I gotrsquo So sometimes pictures come up and they can be accidental but itrsquos accidental with a purpose You know yoursquore where you should be and you hope everything works out That time it did A happy accidentrdquo

Ashmore Is there anything pictures aside that yoursquore the most proud of from being here all these years

Schofield ldquoI guess just lasting 20 years 20 opening days I was really happy that I was able to be in Akron for the first championship and then back here the next year for the next one Irsquom really pleased to have been associated with all these people here all the general managers with Wayne Hodes through Rick Brenner Brad Taylor and Will (Smith) The fact that Irsquove been able to work closely with and become friends with Eric Lipsman hersquos a big part of this team That cannot be overestimated what Ericrsquos done to keep the people sitting in the seats and the gazillions of billboards full Hersquos been a big part of it And Irsquove made some very very good friends in my time here Irsquom still very close with Brian Edmondson he was on the first team that played here and Nate Tebbs who played here when they were with Boston and different people like that who I still am contact with I think one of the things that I find most gratifying is when I go to spring training Irsquoll be standing on the field and every guy whorsquos played here has come up to me to say hello and see how things are going And Irsquom talking about Robbie Cano and stars like that who are just really good down to Earth people You make a lot of friends through this I make friends up here (in the press box) The fourth day that I was here for the Boston regime I

It may be strange to imagine that modern day teenagers in Hamilton might have anything in common with a Scottish general during the Middle Ages or a Jewish teen in Nazi Germany or a man-made monster in the eighteenth century Yet Cathy Funari urges her students to relate to these characters found in the pages of books like Macbeth Night and Frankenstein

ldquoLiterature enables them to see the world from other perspectivesrdquo she says She thinks the ability to think outside of the box is imperative for success in the real world that her students will enter at the end of the school year

Funari is an educator to twelfth grade students at Hamilton High School West Her classes include Honors English and a preparatory course for the New Jersey High School Proficiency Assessment (HSPA)

The teacher of almost three decades encourages her students to dive deeply into a story to find a way to connect with a character a plot or even an author in order to see the world from another point of view She also insists that they become involved in the community as volunteers

Stepping inside the shoes of someone else helps students to prepare for the

world outside of Hamilton Funari hopes that they will ldquotake a look outside of themselvesrdquo and ldquobecome accepting of people with differencesrdquo

She borrows the words and philosophy of author Eli Wiesel as the advice she offers her students ldquoBe sensitive in every way possible about everything in life Be sensitive Insensitivity brings indifference and nothing is worse than indifference Indifference makes that person dead before the person dies Indifference means there is a kind of apathy that sets in and you no longer appreciate beauty friendship goodness or anythingrdquo

Sensitivity compassion and understanding foster an environment of respect among peers which yields a sense of safety in the classroom Her theory is that when there is no fear students can listen well confidently share their ideas and engage in productive dialogue

Ms Funari is a veteran educator having taught a total of 37 years 26 of which were spent at McCorristin Catholic High School before arriving at HHW eight years ago

She has taught all four grades of secondary school but fell in love with the twelfth grade because of the maturity level of seniors Their enthusiasm and willingness to engage in debate is what

won her over ldquoI like the fact that they can argue a

pointrdquo she says ldquoIt shows that they are thinking and it gets me energizedrdquo

She admits it can be challenging and even frustrating at times but more often it is enjoyable and rewarding Certainly never dull

ldquoI want to teach them some of the tools to be good citizens and to be successfulrdquo she says ldquohellipbut we as teachers meet them for the first time in September and have a short time with

them We canrsquot take full credit Their success is a combination of teachers communities and most importantly families

Funari grew up and continues to reside in Ewing She attended Notre Dame High School and went on to Trenton State College She graduated with a bachelor of the arts in secondary English education and minor concentration in Spanish She holds a masters of the arts degree from the same institution

HAMILTON ndash Local Democrats are faced with their own scandal after Robynn Dumont withdrew from the November election for council after news surfaced that the council-hopeful faces an uphill legal battle and possible criminal charges

Dumont a 41-year-old accountant by trade was recently named in a civil suit filed by the daughter of one of her former client 85-year-old Clarksboro resident Joyce Lippincott according to a report from NJcom

Lippincottrsquos daughter Sandra Carty named her sister Pamela Wardach and eventually Dumont in a February 2012 lawsuit for their suggested roles in transferring at least $850000 from the estate of the aging woman whose mentally deteriorating state came under question in court documents according to the site

Cartyrsquos attorney Peter Celano Jr did not immediately respond to the Hamiltonionrsquos request for interview He was quoted in the Trenton Times on May 5 2013 saying-rdquoShersquos an

absolute scoundrel Therersquos probably no sanctions stiff enoughrdquo

Dumont was unavailable for comment as well

When ordered by a judge to repay $180000 of the funds in questions Dumontrsquos checks arrived late and later bounced leading the Gloucester County Prosecutorrsquos Office to pursue a criminal investigation into the matter Dumont has since filed bankruptcy the outcome of which is still unclear at this time

ldquoI was extremely disappointed to read about the allegations concerning Robynn Dumontrdquo Democratic mayoral candidate Barbara Plumeri said in an official statement ldquoI ask her to do what is best for herself her family and her community and drop out of the council race so she can focus on fighting the allegations against herrdquo

Dumont stepped down and removed herself from the race only hours later

Like any number of other Hamilton residents the municipal Democratic Chairman Gil Lugossy only first learned of Dumontrsquos ordeal after local

media leaked word of her pending legal troubles

In late February The Hamilton Democratic Committee by way of a majority vote chose Dumont for a four-year council seat bid The party could either revisit the pool of potential candidates who were not selected during that process to include Nina Melker Mickey Caggana and Rick Tighe or begin recruiting efforts within the community Lugossy said

ldquoItrsquos so new we werenrsquot expecting all of thisrdquo he said

At this point party members are researching how to proceed Lugossy added

ldquoWe have to look at other alternate people and look at the legal ramifications and state lawsrdquo he said

Dumontrsquos running mates were Barbara Plumeri Daniel Keelan Tennille McCoy and Joe Santo

Despite dropping out of the race Dumont would remain on the primary ballot because overseas ballots were mailed and sample ballots were printed

and distributed to Hamilton votersFrom the other aisle Republican

mayoral candidate Mayor Kelly Yaede weighed in on the matter calling the allegations levied against Dumont ldquodisturbing and unconscionablerdquo

ldquoAs we have learned over the last year every person who is alleged to have committed a crime is entitled to their day in court and the judicial system will handle the matter accordinglyrdquo Yaede said

Democratic Party sources have indicated the party is actively trying to recruit longtime Hamilton business woman Nina Melker

Melker is a longtime banking industry professional currently employed by Hopewell Valley Community Bank

Melker was listed in the 50 Most Interesting People for the May Edition Accidently it listed her employer as Bank of Princeton which was her previous employer before Hopewell Valley Commu-nity Bank

If Athlete of the Month Kristin Hallam doesnrsquot signal the athleticism of Notting-hamrsquos Class of 2016 ndash track star Reggie Phillips certainly should

The freshman spent the spring running with the varsity boys and past most of them in many events

In the Mercer County Championships alone Phillips came in 5th place in the 100-meter dash (1168) 6th in the 200 (2359) and second in the 4x400 meter relay For the relay he teamed up with Alex Bor-zelin Koran Green and Jermaine Griffith

ldquoYoursquove got to have a lot of heartrdquo says Phillips ldquoOnce you hit a certain point you think lsquoI donrsquot want to do itrsquo Yoursquove got to push yourself to that finish line Lucky for me Irsquove got Alex Jermaine and Arthur (Johnson) pushing me so thatrsquos goodrdquo

Upper classmen like the friends he men-tions are knowledgeable role models They were all an integral part of Nottinghamrsquos undefeated season in track amp field

Phillips became part of their season once coaches discovered his skills were a cut above his freshman classmates

ldquoHe won four golds at the freshman in-vitational at Steinertrdquo recalls varsity track coach Jon Adams Sr also of Northstar foot-ball fame ldquoHis athletic abilities are un-questioned and his talent just shows through

every time he steps out here on the trackrdquoldquoThere are no off daysrdquo Phillips says ldquoI

run up and down the track go to the weight-room and build up a lot Irsquom running with big peoplerdquo

Phillips also placed well in the recent state sectional tournament at Monmouth High School

Track season may now be over but noth-ing will stop Phillips from striving for more personal bests

ldquoItrsquos amazing that a freshman can run like he doesrdquo says Adams ldquoHersquos going to do great thingsrdquo

Adams would know better than anyone He also has seen Phillips dominate as a de-fensive back and wide receiver on the foot-ball field

He plays on the freshman team in that sport but still excels having hauled in many interceptions and completions

ldquoI love footballrdquo he proclaims ldquoI would love to play it in college But Irsquoll be run-ning track for years to comerdquo

The two sports go hand in hand as far as their conditioning Phillips will play on the JV squad this fall

And hersquoll be running practically every day

ldquoI want a ringrdquo Phillips says ldquoCoaches have high hopes for me and want me to do things I do toordquo

Pitcher Kristin Hallam has only begun to write her story But the first chapter is one worth writing home about

From the plate her batting average and on-base percentage both peaked at well over 500 this season

From the mound she has shared her time with greats like Jamie Terry It was mainly Hallam though who carried the Northstars gracefully into state play after the team finished as the runner-up in the Mercer County Tournament

Notching her 10th win on the hill in NHSrsquos 2-0 triumph over Woodbridge on May 21st made her an easy choice for the Hamiltonianrsquos Athlete of the Month

ldquoI feel right at home hererdquo says Hallam ldquoIrsquove known all my teammates since I was littlehellipplaying rec ball and everything But for them to be excited about me coming it was good motivation for me to work harder I knew I wasnrsquot going to be a disappointmentrdquo

Quite the contrary Eight of Hallamrsquos victories came during the teamrsquos mammoth 12-game winning streak that spanned much of the regular season and most of their MCT run

Though she suffered a tough 4th and 5th inning against Allentown High in the county title game and lost 9-4 it was Nottinghamrsquos (moreover Hallamrsquos) semifinal battle with mighty Robbinsville

the night before that turned headsThe lsquoStars knocked off the MCTrsquos top

seed 2-0 defeating the Ravens for the first time this decade Hallam handed R-ville only their second loss all year allowing just five singles in a complete 7-inning upset

ldquoHer pitches were onrdquo recalls Nottingham head coach Danelle Wilson ldquoShe didnrsquot strike everyone out she had some good fielding behind her But she definitely kept them (the Ravens) a little off balance and thatrsquos the name of the gamerdquo

Hallamrsquos personal game has had several names over the years Two of them versatility and determination

ldquoI didnrsquot start out as a pitcherrdquo she says reflecting on her early days with the Hamilton Hurricanes at age six ldquoMy

first position was left field then righthellipI played pretty much everything but first baserdquo

Discovering her pitching acumen was largely a family affair

ldquoMy sister used to pitchrdquo she says of junior Jennifer an outfielder for the Northstars ldquoWe would just fool around and Irsquod pitch with her and learn from her One day my dad asked me if I wanted to go for pitching lessons I said yesrdquo

ldquoIrsquom really proud of my sisterrdquo says Jen ldquoShersquos a freshman on the mound with so much composure and brings out the best in us Irsquove seen her make so many accomplishments mainly going to the World Seriesrdquo

Yes Hallam was part of the 2010 12U Hamilton Hurricanes team that like many teams of yesteryear reached the

Babe Ruth World Series The big game experience appears to have helped her just as much as the exposure did

Today Hallam looks forward to three more strong seasons as a Northstar This summer shersquoll team up with the Central Jersey Outlaws for more travel ball In the fall shersquoll return to Nottinghamrsquos soccer ranks for her second straight varsity campaign there She wonrsquot need to make a decision on college for a while yet her 44 GPA will likely attract recruiters to her

Looking ahead Hallam claims shersquod love to play softball professionally if possible

ldquoYes I wouldrdquo she says emphaticallyWith much of her book still unwritten

A NEW CHOICE IN NEIGHBORHOOD BANKING

To those on the inside they are heroines of Sandy tirelessly taking up causes no matter how uphill the path might seem

After the October 29 hurricane pum-meled the East Coast leaving thousands homeless without work and in utter de-spair two locals and cousins Tera Juerling and Dina Sommerer couldnrsquot be content with watching from the sidelines

The pair visited the hardest hit areas and launched multiple drives in the process ndash an initial one for supplies a holiday collection for impacted families and several others to follow as the days wore on

While many are humbled by their vol-unteerism and enduring spirit Jeurling and Sommerer reveal whatrsquos really driven their storied journey

For the Love of a Child The offspring a serviceman Jeurling

made her way into the world just outside an Ohio base in Indiana more than 41 years ago

After a few years in the Midwest her parents returned to her motherrsquos childhood home in Hamilton and this outsider seam-lessly transitioned into Jersey life

ldquoI have a younger sisterrdquo she said ldquoI went to Holy Angels Catholic School and Notre Dame and I was just your typical kidrdquo

So that the family never went without Juerlingrsquos father worked two jobs starting his day off at 730 am as a postal carrier and clocking out at midnight after his night shift at an area gas station

ldquoThey are the reason that I am what I amrdquo Juerling said of her parents

If her father resilience served to inspire then Juerlingrsquos still impressionable troop of children stand to motivate

ldquoNow one of the main reasons I do what I do is for my kids ndash I want to set a good ex-amplerdquo she said ldquoItrsquos very hard there are days I want to pull the covers over my head But I always wanted to be a mother and I love my kids more anythingrdquo

Four days after Sandy hit Juerlingrsquos el-dest Hamilton West High School student Haley Juerling had to cancel her sweet-16 gala

Although Haleyrsquos disappointment was more than evident Juerling said her daugh-terrsquos tune soon changed once collections kicked-off and they made a special trip down to the battered coast

ldquoThese people were living in sheltersrdquo Juerling said ldquoThey had no house no phone no Uggsrdquo

Witnessing the devastation up close Hal-ey shared five simple words assuring her mother that the experience had been a life-altering one

ldquoMom I get it nowrdquo she saidSo Juerling wasnrsquot surprised at her

daughterrsquos reaction when news broke of an F-5 tornado that had struck Moore Okla in mid-May killing two-dozen people and demolishing some 13000 homes

ldquoMom have you been following the newsrdquo Juerling said quoting her daughter ldquoOklahoma is totally wiped out Wersquove got to do something nowrdquo

Similar to Sandy the Juerlingrsquos living

room again became a drop-off site for med-ical supplies water and other goods

But thatrsquos all right at least by a proud motherrsquos standards

ldquoI want them to see itrsquos good to help oth-ersrdquo Jeurling said ldquoThatrsquos what I want to instill ndash the stuff theyrsquore not learning in school You donrsquot get your life lessons from a bookrdquo

Currently organizing a series of Sandy benefit concerts ldquoCure for the Shorerdquo Juerling couldnrsquot have been happier when a college-bound Haley announced she was considering a career in sociology or psy-chology because of her experiences with helping others

ldquoI love helping people I love event plan-ning and I love seeing it all come togetherrdquo Juerling said ldquoEspecially when the people are actually very very grateful But itrsquos not for the recognition ndash itrsquos for my kids and the experience theyrsquore getting from thisldquo

Saving a MemoryDina Sommerer moved from Trenton to

Hamilton around the fifth grade While she has many fond memories of

her childhood in the township some of her most treasured times were spent down at the shore

Sommererrsquos father Francis ldquoFrankrdquo Schumacher a sergeant with the local Sher-iffrsquos Department played the part almost ef-fortlessly even when he wasnrsquot on duty

ldquoWe had a lot of rules no toy guns strict curfews and a lot of my friends were also scared of himrdquo she said ldquoBut then there

were the goofy times like water fights in the kitchen We took vacations once or twice a year but in the summer always to Lavalletterdquo

The shore gave father and daughter an opportunity to fall into what would become cherished seasonal routines like making themselves at home in the usual summer haunt or grabbing a bowl of clam chowder at the Crabs Claw Inn

ldquoMe and my dad bonded there and there was always one thing we made time to do ndash we always went fishing and crabbingrdquo

Her father lost his battle with cancer just a few years ago and Sommerer depended on the shore to stoke and preserve those memories

After Sandy hit she was determined to rebuild not just for her and her dad but for anyone who sees those shorelines as sacred ground
