Participationintheprogram:HamlinevolunteerapplicationsandHancockstudentnominations

VolunteerSelection:HamlinestudentstypicallyapplyfortheHandinHandvolunteerpositionintheFallofeachyear.However,studentscanstillapplyatanytimethroughouttheyear.Hamlinestudentsareacceptedintotheprogrambasedonanapplicationthatasksfortheirtimeavailabilityandafewquestionsthatinquireabouttheirwillingnesstocommitanddesiretoparticipate.Onceacceptedintotheprogram,volunteersattendaHandinHandtraining(includingatourofHancock),completeavolunteerregistrationform

andagreetofollowallprogramregulationswhicharedetailedinthishandbook.VolunteersmustalsoagreetoabidebyalloftheguidelinessetbytheSt.PaulSchoolDistrict,Hancock,HamlineUniversity,andallstateandfederallaws,whilewithanyHancockstudent.

In2011‐2012,weacceptedover100volunteersand90ofthosefollowedthroughwithtrainingandbegantheprogrambyNovember1st.

HancockStudentNominations:Hancockstudentsarenominatedfortheprogramformanydifferentreasons.Someteachersnominatestudentsbecausetheyare:❏ Shyintheclassroomandwould

benefitfrommoresocialinteraction.❏ StilllearningEnglishandwould

benefitfromincreasedlanguageinteractionandsupportwithanEnglishspeaker.

❏ Experiencingbehavioralproblemsinclassandcouldbenefitfromhavingapositiverole‐model

❏ Experiencingissuesathomeorintheirsociallifeandcouldbenefitfromhavingaconsistentmentorwhotakesaninterestinthem.

Asamentor,yourcommitmenttoyourHancockbuddyisthemostimportantpieceoftheHandinHandprogram.

Commitment:Allvolunteersagreetocommitto45minutesperweekforaminimumofoneHamlineUniversitysemester,butpreferablyforanentireschoolyearormore.Thistimeistobespentone‐on‐onewithyourHancockbuddy.Volunteerssign‐ineachweekinalogbooktoverifythattheycame.TheRetentionOfficerwillcontactanyvolunteerwhomissesabuddysessionwithoutnotice.Threemissedconsecutivesessionswillresultinterminationfromtheprogram. If,atanytime,avolunteermustleavetheprogramforanyreason,thatvolunteermustnotifytheHandinHandexecutiveboard,his/herbuddy'sclassroomteacher,andhis/herHancockbuddy.

Ifyourbuddyisabsent…Ifyougotoyourbuddy'sclassroomandhe/sheisabsentforthedayorunavailabletobewithyou,leaveanoteforhim/herandsignout.Whensigningoutcommentinthelogbookthatyourbuddywasabsent,andyouwillbegrantedcreditforyoursessionforthatweek.Itispreferredthatyoumakeanefforttoreturnanotherdaythatweek,thoughitisnotrequired.Ifyouneedtocancelasession…Ifameetingwithyourbuddycannotbekept,youmustdothefollowing:❏ NotifytheRetentionOfficer❏ Contactyourbuddy’steacherby

phone,emailorinperson.❏ Attempttorescheduleyourmeeting

forthatweekwiththeteacher.

Ifyouneedtore‐schedule…Youmayrescheduleoradjustyourmeetingtimeswithyourbuddy'steacherwithouthavingtonotifyanyoneelse.YourmeetingtimesareautomaticallycancelediftheyarescheduledovereitheraHamlineorHancockschoolvacationanddonotneedtoberescheduled.Justbesurethatyourbuddyisawareofthechanges.ThisisespeciallyimportantifyouwillbegoneoverJ‐term‐don'tletyourbuddywonderwhereyouareforamonth!

KeepinmindthatyourHandinHandbuddywilltakeitpersonallyifyoudonotshowup,sodon'tbreaktheirhearts!

HandinHandmentorsspendtimewiththeirHandinHandbuddiesinavarietyofmeaningfulways.

Wheredobuddiesmeet?BuddiestypicallymeetforsessionsneartheHandinHandBuddyCabinet,locatednearthecafeteria.YouandyourbuddymayuseunoccupiedspaceonHancockgrounds.Someideasare:thehallway(wherethebuddycabinetis),thecafeteria,thegym,ortheplayground(ifateacherisouttherewiththeirclass).YoumaynottakeyourbuddyoffHancockpropertyunlessitisforaHandinHandsponsoredLargeGroupEvent.Ifyouhaveanyquestionsaboutwhereyoucango,stopintheofficeandask.Forsafetyreasons,youmustbeinplainviewatalltimeswithyourbuddy. Youmayalsohavelunchwithyoubuddyanydayduringtheirlunchtimeinthecafeteria.

GameandPlayTime:TheBuddyCabinetisfulloffunandeducationalgamesthatyouandyourbuddycanplaywith.Therearealsosportsrelatedtoysavailableforoutsideplay.Gametimeisagoodwaytobuildarelationshipwithyourbuddy.

FocusedDiscussions:AcoreinitiativeofHandinHandistopromotecollegeawarenessinthelivesofHancockyouth.Weaskthatyoucentersomeofyourdiscussionswithyourbuddyoncollegerelatedtopics.Askyourbuddyabouttheirhopesanddreamsinlifeandshareyourgrowingknowledgeaboutcollege.Connecttheirchoicesinschooltopost‐secondaryaccess.Modelyouracademicbehavior.

WritingFolders:Youwillengageinwritingwithyourbuddyandkeepthiswritinginafolder.Forexample,onebuddypairmightdevelopanentirestorybasedonamemoryshe/hehas.Therewillbemanyresourcesprovidedtoyou(nexttothebuddycabinet)topromptandinspireyourbuddytotalkandwriteaboutthemselves.Thisprojectwillrequirealotofyourguidance.Itisanopportunityforyoutogettoknowyourbuddybetterandviceversa.Themoreyougettoknowyourbuddy,themoreyouwillbeabletoguideyourbuddyinwritingandtalkingabouttopicsthattheyareinterestedin.Altogetheritisalsoatooltoallowyourbuddytodevelopandsharehis/herstoryandotherwriting.

Onceasemester,alltheHandinHandbuddiesgathertocelebrateHandinHandataLargeGroupEvent.

WhatisanL.G.E.?Large‐groupeventswillbeheldonceasemester.Theseeventsareagreatwayforallthebuddypairstogettogetherwithotherbuddiesandparticipateinactivities.Allvolunteersareencouragedtoattendeachlarge‐groupevent.IfaHamlinevolunteerisunabletoattendalarge‐groupevent,his/herbuddywillnotbeabletoattendeither.IfyouandyourbuddyattendaLargeGroupevent,thismaytaketheplaceofyourregularmeeting;however,ifyouhavetimeforboth,thatworks,too!**Note:YoumustwalktoandfromHamlinewithyourbuddyandthegroupforeachLargeGroupEvent.

CollegeAwareness: Traditionally,thefirstLargeGroupEventfocusesonpromotingcollegeawareness.Inpastyears,thiseventhasconsistedofeatinglunchatKayFredericksBallroomontheHamlinecampuswhilebuddiesengagedindiscussionsaboutcollege‐relatedtopics.

SorinLunch:AfavoriteLargeGroupEventofmanybuddiesistheannualSorinLunch.HamlinementorsshareapieceofUniversitylifewiththeirbuddiesbyhavinglunchwiththemintheSorinDiningroomduringconvohour.Thiseventisusuallysplitintotwodaysandorganizedbygrade‐levelinordertoaccountforallthebuddies.

PublishingParty:Attheendoftheyear,buddiesgathertogetheratthelastLargeGroupEventtosharetheirwritingwitheachother.Atthispoint,buddypairsshouldhaveproducedoneormorepiecesofwritingthatthey“polished”intoafinishedproduct.Inpreparationforthisevent,buddiescanusethematerialsintheartsandcraftsbins(nexttotheBuddyCabinet)tofinishorcompletetheirpieceofwriting.Attheevent,buddypairswillreadaloudportionsoftheirwritinginsmallgroups.

buddy!Ifyoudon'tknowananswerorareunsureofwhattodo,admitittothechildandworkitouttogether.Thisactuallyencourageschildren;theyseethatyouarenotperfectandtheydon'thavetobeeither.

❏ Usetactandpositivecomments.

Encourageyourbuddywithcompliments,especiallywhenhe/sheishavingdifficulties.

❏ Whenworkingwithyourbuddy,encouragethemtodotheirownthinking.Givethemplentyoftimetoansweraquestion.Silenceoftenmeanstheyarethinkingandorganizingwhattheywanttosay.

❏ Respectyourbuddy'sprivacy.If

he/sherevealsanypersonalinformationitistobekeptinstrictconfidence.

❏ Encourageyourbuddytodoher/his

best.❏ Askaboutyourbuddy’sfavorite

movies,hangouts,CD’s,ortypesofmusicetc.Followingupwithopen‐endedquestions,suchas“Whatdoyoulike(orthink)about…?”spurs

ThereareafewrulesandsafetyguidelinesthatallHandinHandmentorsshouldfollow.

Wearappropriateclothing:IfyourclothingviolatesaHancockrule,pleasedon'twearit.Revealingclothingorclothingthatadvertisescigarettes,alcoholorotherillegaldrugsshouldnotbeworn.Asageneralrule,ifyouhaveclothingthatwouldbeinappropriateforathirdgradertowear,don'twearitatHancock.

Gifts:HamlinevolunteersarenotallowedtobringgiftsfortheirHancockbuddies.

Bevisibleatalltimes:Whenspendingtimewithyourbuddy,youmustbevisibletoHancockemployeesatalltimes.Youmayneverbealonewithyourbuddy.

SafetyandDrills:Asageneralrule,useyourowngoodjudgmentaboutsafety.ThemostimportantsafetyissueforHandinHandisthatyoudonotleaveHancockpropertyalonewithyourbuddy.IfyouareatHancockwithyourbuddyandthereisastormorfiredrill,pleasefollowthenearestclassandstaywiththemuntilthedrillisover.
