Handball is played in a number of formats around the world. It

works in the playground as the equipment needed is cheap and

accessible to most. The rules of the game can be simplified to

meet the needs of any student or additional rules can be added

to increase player rotation.

The benefits of participating in such an activity may include:

Turn taking and waiting in line

Developing coping skills (losing/getting out)

Communication skills (both informative and social)

Developing hand eye coordination

Developing gross motor skills

Increased peer networks

Method:

1. Students are asked to rank the terms King, Queen, Jack and

Dunce from most important (highest) to least important (lowest)

based on their own prior knowledge. Write their answers on the

board.

2. Students are told that the game moves clockwise, starting from

the lower right. They should try to use this knowledge to label the

squares on their worksheet King, Queen, Jack and Dunce.

Rationale:

Students will learn the basic rotation rules of handball using a

balloon. This activity will allow students with poor hand eye

coordination an opportunity to develop these using a larger,

slower moving object.

Lesson

Resources : Balloons

Method:

1. Use the same courts (squares you wish students to use for

playing handball). This activity could be done almost anywhere

but it is more likely that becoming more familiar with the courts

will assist with generalisation.

2. Playing with modified rules (eg the ball cannot hit the gound,

only one hit per square) have students play and assist with

movement from square to square as each player progressively gets

out until all players are confident with the progression of play.

Rationale:

Students will use their hands to learn a percussion piece using

drums.

Related social activity: Handball

Lesson

Resources : drums, music

Method:

1. Seat students in a circle. Introduce drumming by explaining to students

that drumming / percussion instruments are one of the simplest types of

musical instruments, they are found in all cultures and are often used to

provide the beat or rhythm.

2. Let students have some unstructured time with their instrument. If

there are not enough for each student to have their own drum then allow

enough time for all students in the group to have a free play.

3. Start the lesson. Teach students how to position their drum, how to use

their hand to find the base and the tone.

4. Copy a rhythm. The teacher will demonstrate a short rhythm (slowly)

and the students will copy it. As the group becomes familiar with the

rhythm the pace should increase. Ensure all students get to learn the piece.

5. Ask students to come up with a short rhythm for others to learn. Nomi-

nate students to demonstrate their rhythm and have the class copy.

6. To finish the lesson select a popular song and have students drum

along to the beat.
